Current Event #11: Major Changes Planned for USPS
Due: Friday, December 9th
In an attempt to keep the United States Postal Service afloat, there will be some drastic changes made that will impact the delivery of mail across the nation. These changes reflect the hardships that Americans are facing due to the strains of our financial climate. Currently, the USPS will eliminate the option of First-Class Next-Day mail delivery service and opt for 2-3 day service, which will slow down the delivery of mail because of the lack of manpower. Technology also has a role to play, in that people have moved toward using on-line shipping options versus using regular postage stamps mailings. All of these measures have and will literally cost thousands of postal workers their jobs.
What You Will Do:
Read and view the following article and video links to find out the latest actions that will occur because of the financial state of the economy. In your own words, discuss in 2-3 paragraphs how this might affect you and your family. Within your paragraphs also state whether or not most of your household mailings are done via on-line or with postal stamp mailings. Discuss your position on these recent changes that impact the lives of postal workers and the time in which you and your family will receive or ship mail/packages.

Once the changes are made, it will affect my family. I do not know how strongly it will impact my life, but I know my dad ships and receive items frequently. Adjustments would have to be made to accumulate the loss time of delivery, but the change would not drastically affect our lives.
If the changes were made, 28,000 postal workers would lose their jobs. Considering the state of our economy, it would be rather difficult to find a new job, and it would place pressure on their families. The USPS would save a lot of money from this venture, but it will harm many people.

I don’t think this will highly impact my life, because I don’t really send out mail or packages. But I do know that my parents usually depend on the USPS to ship out items and also receive them for their work. It would be a lot harder for people like my parents to get their work done because it would take a much longer for their mail and packages to get to them. I think that after these changes to the USPS, more people will turn to e-mailing to get in contact with somebody instead of mailing, but sending packages would still be the same. For me, I personally enjoy using the Internet to contact my friends and family, and I don’t go to the post office since I don’t really have anything to send, but my parents do receive mail and packages quite often.
I feel that the USPS will be saving a lot of money from making these changes, but I also think that since they are closing about 3,700 post offices around the country, a lot of people will be losing their jobs. Since the economy is tough right now, it would be a challenge to find new jobs. So some are not harmed by this, yet the others that work at those targeted post offices will be.

I doubt that these new changes will impact my life as much as others, as my family rarely has items shipped to and from our home. Of course, it would be inconvenient for us because it will take very long for packages to come, but again we don't really order much. It will not impact me, personally either because, i don't mail stuff i use the internet to talk to friends and family.
USPS will be making/saving tons of money for these changes, but at what cost? They are closing thousands of post offices throughout the country thousands will lose their jobs. With the economy how it is today most of those people will probably not find new jobs. I just hope the benefits outweigh the risk.

I feel this won’t affect me, but it will affect my parents. My parents like to send out Christmas cards and gifts to other parts of the country and they still need to do it. Also my family will get stuff a few days later. My mom is usually the one that goes to the post office, and she just goes to the post office. She does not do anything online.
I feel really sorry for the workers. 28,000 jobs going away is just too many jobs going away. I know that the USPS Company does not have very much money, but these 28,000 people really do need money. It is hard these days to get a job. I feel the workers should get their salaries cut instead of getting fired because they at least need some money. Some money is better that none.

I don’t think this will impact my life right now, because I don’t really send out mail or packages. Also I don’t think that this will affect any other family member in my family, because we don’t usually send/ship packages. This new thing would not really affect my family because we don’t ship a lot of items. But this would affect a lot of other people, because they probably work around the globe while their family stays at home. Plus my family and I do not use the UPS to ship items. After these changes are made, more and more people will probably use email or texting to contact people or even possible try to find other miraculous ways to gets items to people.
I feel that the UPS will be saving a lot of money from making these changes, and also since they are closing about 3,700 post offices around the country, a lot of people will be losing their jobs. Furthermore since the economy sucks right now the people who have lost jobs will have a great challenge ahead of them. My family and I send mail and items of such with postal stamps.

The decision to end the next-day mail service won’t impact my life very much. I don’t frequently send or receive packages through USPS. I rely more on technology to send emails or pictures like most people do these days. My family ships packages to our relatives for their birthdays, but if we send the presents a couple days earlier then it wouldn’t be an issue.
Although my family and I won’t be impacted from the cut-backs, I feel bad for all the postal workers that will be losing their jobs. With this economy, it will be very difficult for them to recover quickly and find new jobs. The USPS will probably save a lot of money from the changes, but it will be a disadvantage for people and companies that ship packages daily. Eventually, I think the USPS will end up losing costumers due to the inconvenience of the changes they’ve made.
Juliana Dunn, 5th
ReplyDeleteI do not think that this event will affect my life directly, because my family just uses phones and email as a way to keep contact. Although we do get packages delivered occasionally, I doubt any major life changes will occur because the packages are not able to come within 24 hours. Because we only send packages on birthdays or during the holiday season, I am sure this new schedule will be easy to adjust to.
I think that while the USPS is trying to be more efficient, they will make many lives hard and lose some business along the way. Although it will not affect me directly, I feel very bad for the twenty eight thousand people that will lose their jobs due to cut backs. I think it is also terrible that any employees that stay, because there may not be any retirement or federal health programs available. All in all, I wish these cuts did not have to be made.

I don't think that this issue with the postal office will highly change my life. Because I don't usually send out mail that needs to get there the next day. I don't think it's really necessary to have mail come the next day. Unless it's a very important document. If I were to send out mail, it's usually birthday cards, Christmas cards, thank you cards, etc.
This may impact my many businesses if they are on a tight schedule and need something to be shipped of and received the next day. I know it may impact my mom because she works at home and they usually send her many important things via UPS. But I think many people are going to start emailing a lot more. It will be faster and people can get information they need quickly.

ReplyDeleteThe decision to end next-day mail is inconvenient, but it is the right thing to do. This decision could save the USPS up to 3 billion dollars in finances. Of course this also means about 28,000 postal workers will get laid off and it will close 252 processing facilities. This move is going to put a lot of people out of work.
This won't affect my life very much at all. The only time I get mail anyway is on my birthday. I don't know how often my parents use the post office, but I don't think it's very often. Besides there's still FedEx and UPS.

I don’t think these changes will affect my life very much. We don’t receive packages frequently and most of the time we aren’t in a rush to get packages. When we order items, they are usually shipped by the UPS. Most of the time we use the internet (email, facebook, etc.) or phone to get in touch with people.
The USPS will cut 28,000 people as part of their plan. It will affect their lives because it’s hard to find new jobs in this economy. However, I guess this way the USPS will be able to keep running and delivering our mail and packages. I think the most that will happen to our family is that we get our mail in the evening instead of afternoons, and packages a few days late.

ReplyDeleteI think this will not really be a big deal. I think that now that people use things like e-mail the need for letters has gone down dramatically. I think that most people will use the United States Postal Service to send packages near Christmas. In my opinion this makes perfect sense and it was bound to happen. With the modern computer age here the older way news got around is unused so it goes out of buisness. This is like when computers came around and typewriters were not used.
Most of the mailing my family does is via e-mail. My mom is a big e-mailer. She e-mails a lot. I think this actually saves us money because you only need to pay for internet and you don't need to pay every time you send something.

I do not think that the cuts for the postal sevice will not be a problem. So many people send things electronically and most people don't send things in the mail. That is why the postal service is loosing so much money. It will be a problem for small bisnuss owners. They need to send things over night and they will not be able to do that any more.
Our family does not send any letters in the mail. We send emails instead. We even send cards in the mail. I think that most families are like that. I do not think that it will be a big problem.

I think that the cut in the postal service could have a negative or positive effect. If the money being cut in the postal services is given to school funding or something effective it is great, but if it is put towards government programs that waste money and time I think that they should not be cut. Another issue with the cutting down in the postal service is the loss of many jobs. America is already struggling with its people unable to find work. It says in the article that this could possibly make 28,000 people lose their jobs.
For my family I don’t think this will affect us. We do still use the mail service we don’t do bills online. This may end up making the postal service lose money first class mail is used often around the holidays. Maybe they should just open first class mail around the holidays. Personally I don’t think it will make a difference for many American people unless they have jobs that relate to the postal service.

Budget cuts may not seem necessary, but they are needed. It is a shame that the once powerful empire of the postal service has been abandoned for more modern modes of communication. Even shipping packages can always be handled by UPS. Despite this, I cannot say wit h sincerity that the postal service will be bitterly missed. Inventions like the 8-track player and the telegraph were abandoned for a reason: something made it obsolete. If people can send information faster and cheaper over the Internet then there’s very little to do but let them.
The generation of the postal service is one that is in retirement by this time and nothing can really be said to stop the flow of innovation. Even businesses that formerly relied on the postal service are slowly integrating more modern methods of information transport than snail mail. This is an unfortunate occurrence, but not a very wounding one.

I really don’t think that this will really affect me and my family because we really don’t send packages. We send maybe one or two packages out for Christmas but that is really all. My family occasionally gets packages, even if we send packages off for holidays or birthdays we ship it very ahead of time.
I feel bad for all the postal workers that will be losing their jobs, with this economy it will be very hard for these people to recover from this and get a new job. I also think that USPS could save a lot of money by this cut back. In a way I think this could hurt a lot of companies and other people.

Once the 28,000 jobs are said to be eliminated, obviously the company will shrink, possibly saving money for them. But how this may influence families in the U.S. is also important. Many people who don't have enough money for electronic mailing devices (ie. phones, computers, et cetera) will have lots of trouble communicating with other people through USPS. This doesn't impact me as much, but much more my parents. They rely on USPS for their work, and since my dad owns a large saltwater fish tank, it is a necessity for him to receive packages in the mail, and he gets them about once a week.
If drastic changes were made to USPS, an example; shipping would arrive much later, and costs would increase, then barely anyone would use this style of shipping system, unless if an emergency and one is without an electronic mailing device. People would rather not pay for shipping and wait the aggravating time for something to arrive, but possibly even go to that specific mailer and pick it up. Most of the time, nowadays, household mailings are done online, and there seems to be less stamp activity. I feel that even though USPS may save billions of dollars, they should think about their influence through this act to the large percentage of people who rely on them to communicate with relatives, and also the thousands of jobs lost.

This process that is going on will not really change me and my family’s life. We don’t really send off packages all that often. My family sometimes gets packages but when we do or if we do decide to send something we send it ahead of time. Just because I don’t use the postal service as often as others doesn’t mean others don’t use it to there advantage.
I think the cut in postal service could be affective. If the money being taken from the postal service is being put towards a good cause then I think this could be really effective but if the money being cut from the postal service is going to be put toward something like the government like most money is then that could be a huge financial problem.

I think that the US postal system is important, and it has been a key part of developing our country, but if there is less need for it now, it makes sense to simply let it go. People will lose jobs, and that's a pity, but it's worse to make them pay taxes on a useless governmental system.
I can remember a time in my life when I liked to send letters, when I considered in an act of romanticism, but now anymore, Now, all the mailings in my house are done by email, and the only thing we receive in the mail anymore is the occasional catalog, and some bills that we can't set up online. I really do believe that there is no longer any need for such an extensive postal system when no one really sends letters anymore.

If the changes are made over 20,000 people would lose their job, and it wouldn’t be that easy to find another job. However the USPS would be saving a lot of money. But I don’t think it would be worth it, especially to the people that are losing their jobs for it. The plus side to this is that the money is going toward things like schools. That is a good thing because it is always good to improve schools.
I don’t think that this would affect my family. We never go to the post office anymore. We always mail our stuff online. The only time we ever go is if we are expecting something in the mail from somebody, or sending something to somebody

My family like many other American families is an avid user of USPS. We use it for sending out invitations, Giving out Thanks you cards. Yesterday we sent out around 100 invitations for my brothers bar mitzvah using
The united states postal service. With out the next day shipping option we will not be sending mail by USPS. instead we plan to send everything electronically.
Thousands of people will lose there job with the fallout of Usps, This saddens me for people have worked hard for those jobs, and I have never had a late piece of mail sent to me. I think mail will become more unreliable now with people out of work. I plan on sending only emails for now on.

I think that the decline of usage of the United states postal service is sad because everyone has so much reliance on it. I guess the decline of use of it is due to the use of people sending things electronically over the internet.
I do not see why they need to be shut down when people rely on them so much. It's kind of part of American culture. But not just the shutting down of it but the decline of jobs in that field. Many will become jobless.

This is kind if sad to me to see how the United States Postal Service is declining like this. The United States Postal Service has always been very reliable and it has been around for a very long time. However this does not come as a shock to me. In this day and age things are becoming increasingly elecetronically done. However it is still kind of sad to see it decline.
This does not really affect me or my family that much. For one we rarely use the option of overnight shipping on products. Another reason is that there is no one in my immediate family who works for the post office so it will not affect them either as well.
All in all, changing the USPS won’t affect my life personally, or my family. My parents do send out packages and cards, and they expect to receive their own in a good amount of time. By having it put off a couple of days won’t really be a problem for us. The worst thing I can think of is not being able to receive letters immediately while being away at camp.
ReplyDeleteI feel really bad for the people who are losing jobs from this decision. 28,000 jobs are going to be lost. I hope it’s worth it for the company, because I really feel bad for those people losing jobs.

If this happens pretty much nothing will happen to my family at all. Even when we use the first class thing the mail always comes late. So no it wont affect my family that much. I use both methods of online and postage stamps but in the end it all just ends in the same thing.
However if the changes are made it will be a significant increase to the unemployed percentage rate in the United States. I don't really think its a good idea to go through with it.

ReplyDeleteThe change of the USPS will not greatly affect me or my family personally since we do not send or receive a lot of mail, but it will negatively impact the lives of many people. 28,000 people will have lost their jobs because of this change, which will only add to the huge problem of unemployment in the US. USPS will also lose billions of dollars because of this, and it may become bankrupt. This would greatly impact the post office industry, because people will have to go to other companies to mail. In the end, this will most likely be a very negative effect.
If USPS is forced into bankruptcy, this will cause many more people to become unemployed. With the unemployment situation already very poor, this will be a crushing blow. Hopefully, they will be able to find a way to avoid bankruptcy, and momentarily save the jobs of many people.

Even if in small ways, I think this will affect everyone. We are moving toward all internet mailing but mail is still a big part of our life. We get magazines, send birthday cards and presents, and send important documents through the mail. While we do send more emails than letters, there are things that we can only do or get through the mail. The biggest impact would be the loss of Saturday mail in my opinion. It would be a full day less of mail, and a day less of people having jobs. Every time you buy something online, the only way to get it sent to you is through the mail. Some people rely on the postal service for their business, eliminating Saturday’s and having no 1 day mail could really hurt them.
I think that it is awful that so many workers will lose their jobs. This once again feels like a big corporation hurting all of its little workers. Having many more out on the streets will not only hurt the economy much more, but it won’t even pull the company fully out of debt. The end is not worth the means in this case. This won’t be a huge deal in how we ship packages other than a day or 2 later or even more counting loss of Saturday. This is a big deal, and it will make American debt even worse. For that, laying off workers is definitely not worth it.

USPS changing will not affect me or my brothers at home. But It will effect my dad's work. That's because he works for a computer business. There for they need to send out computer to costumers around the world or to business who use the computers. Also my dad's company needs to receive parts. Its just to confusing and makes no sense. Many people have lost their jobs because of this change. Which will now effect the USA even more. It is not worth putting the US in problems that are not needed. The change of the USPS has a huge negative effect and it needs to change.

I think that USPS cutting many jobs will affect many families that depend on a job for the company but I don't think that the possible shut down of next-day shipping will affect as many people because these days people don't use mail as much as they used to, because of factors such as email, and fax. But certainly for buyers who buy goods online and want them straight away, they will not have the oppurtunity to do this.
For me it will not affect my family too much because normally we don't buy that many things online and if we do, we generally wait a few more days because it is cheaper and we don't usually need things straight away. Also when we mail things to other people we are also pretty patient about it and don't use next-day shipping. However I think that this will greatly impact those who are in an office environment and need things to be delivered and sent easily without a huge delay.

I think that it is very sad that the post office and postal service both have to cut. It is really a wake-up call to America too; the recession is getting more and more serious, to the point where the ever-standing post office is cutting back. This, like the article mentioned, will also decrease the number of jobs available. I personally really like the post office; there is nothing better than getting a package or letter in the mail. I hope that after the recession, we can undo these changes, and give people their jobs back.
This will not affect my family dramatically, but we do use the mail often to send holiday and birthday cards to family and friends. We also usually use the over-night thing since we want the card to get there on time, but I guess we won’t be able to use that anymore. In the summer is mainly when I use the postal service, writing letters to keep in touch with everybody, but during the school year I hardly ever use it.
Overall, I think that these changes are necessary considering the budget cuts and recession, but after the recession I hope we can re-expand the postal service again.
The end of next-day mail shipping will not really affect me. While my family does use postal stamp delivery for things like bills and letters to our relatives, the majority of our mailing is done online. Having these things delayed doesn't have much of an affect on our lives, we just have to ship things a bit sooner.
ReplyDeleteHowever, for those who work for the USPS, the loss of jobs will be a devastating blow. Since jobs are already hard enough to find, having 28,000 more unemployed people would increase the demand on jobs and make many people's lives more miserable. Personally, I can see the reasoning behind the USPS cutting jobs, but having so many people lose their jobs is terrible. It would be better to find a different solution that would avoid having this many people lose their jobs.

I do not think this situation will affect me. I think that because I mostly use email and other online communication sites. But I do think it will affect my parents and grandparents, because they are more conservative with the way they send mail. My grandparents still send christmas cards and use "snail mail" while my parents use email but also send mail for their work. Overall I do not think it will affect my family drastically.
I think it is very sad that they Post Office has to make all of these cuts especially with the Holiday Season coming up. With 28,000 people getting cut from USPS, I believe it will make the demand on jobs even larger, and could cause even more of a problem with unemployed Americans. I believe that it is neccesary though if the USPS wants to stay working and the budget cuts are nesscary. But I think that it is very sad that America has this big recission and more and more jobs are getting cut everyday. Overall, it's a very troubling situation and I believe that America needs to find a way to prevent budget cuts so more jobs can be saved and we will have less unemployed americans.

The fact that the United States Postal Service is changing and closing will not affect me very much. Although my family and extended family use the postal service to send packages, we not not use it very often. Most mailing is done online or on the telephone. Sometimes my family sends postal stamps out of the country for family emergency but that does not happen very often either. I think it will affect many people who uses the USPS a lot. I think they will turn to via-emails since many changes will occur. Costs will increase and there will have to be changes to time management.
I feel sorry for the 28,000 workers that will loose their jobs due to this problem. It is a very sad situation since all of these workers will not have a job to provide for their families. And as we all know, our economy is in great danger. And with our economy, it would rather be very difficult to find a new job. There are currently thousands unemployed. And in many cases for some people, it is impossible to find a job. There are no easy solutions to this problem but, we should all pray and hope for the best so that every family will not have to suffer.

I find it hard to write 2-3 paragraphs on a subject, which will not affect my family and me at all. I don’t think I have ever had something shipped “over night” and I don’t even recall mailing more than one letter a year. Some things just become outdated. When the next iphone comes out, the purchases in the last will drop significantly. This is the same as when email came out, same with the revenues of the postal service.
I always use email. My family uses email. In fact, everybody I know uses email. Which would you prefer: a transport system using several strings of machines, it will cost you money and can take a week OR a free simple instant delivery with one push of a button. We don’t live in the Middle Ages people! If something is more efficient in every way, people WILL use it. But for now, we cannot ship packages over the Internet, so I suppose that can wait.

The fact that these cuts are necessary to keep the USPS from having a serious financial problem reflects the advances and availability of technology in the recent years. While receiving a postcard from a relative when they travel, or an invitation to an event is nice, those rare occasions aren't enough to let the USPS continue all of its current services and stay afloat financially. It is also much more convenient to use email or other electronic communications, especially in an emergency. Another problem is those rare times when you are going to send nice paper invitations for an event is that you are probably not going to use overnight mail. You will have planned far enough in advance for a big event to save extra money and allow for travel accommodations to be made. The USPS is still needed to deliver packages, but people will have to plan further in advance to get to a post office to send packages. The worst part of the cuts the USPS is making won't be for us, as users, it will be for the thousands of workers that get laid off or fired, and their families.
The cuts the USPS is making won't drastically effect my life. I will still be able to receive and send mail, but we will all have to be more patient. The only time I depend solely on the USPS for communication is while away at camp, otherwise my family and I depend mostly on email and Facebook. We send packages to members of our family that live far away, but we have rarely used overnight mail. In my opinion overnight mail should really only be necessary in emergencies, and one or two extra days won't be the end of the world. Whoever is receiving the package should be happy you thought of them, it shouldn't matter if it gets to them a day or two late.

My family and I don't really use the postal service that much. We do occasionally buy something online, but never have we shipped anything "over night." Maybe once a year we may send a letter or a package, but it is very rare. Like most people these days, we stay in contact with family by email or Facebook.
Even though this change in the USPS will not effect me personally, I feel bad for the 28,000 people who will be losing their jobs. Also it is saddening to see a reliable company declining, but this is not suprising. This fate of USPS was inevitable, people were bound to use email more, because its fast and free.

I don't think this change will affect my life or anything. I don't contact my friends and family by sending them mail, I use the internet to contact them. My dad pays most of the bills in my house and he's starting to pay his bills online but he's still paying by mail. The packages are the problem. Some of my relatives send us packages from from Burma but I mean I don't think it'll really change anything. It just takes longer by a day.
Changing how fast mail will get to your day isn't a huge problem but shutting down the postal offices will. About 28,000 people will lose their jobs so it's not good. What's worse is that it'll be harder for the people who get unemployed to find another job since jobs are hard to find right now. The good things are well, technology is thriving and we won't be using as much paper as we once did.

The change in mail will affect a lot of people. First I feel that this will affect lots of people who use the U.S Postal Service. It could delay the work they do on their job. I myself do not mail a lot every year. But my parents receive mail every day, bills and letters from others. Second by stopping next day mail many postal service workers will lose their jobs. Losing jobs has happened a lot in the past year. I think it will be bad for more people to be out of work. I myself do not use one day mailing and neither do my parents but my parents do receive mail daily that is important like bills. This change will affect many people but will not affect my family a lot because one day mail is not really a choice of mailing we use.
This mailing situation is a problem I am not surprised to see and I do not disagree or agree with the change because the changes do not affect me. I wonder how many postal workers the changes will affect. Also will people who use one day mail be upset with the changes.

ReplyDeleteThe changes coming to the USPS won’t affect my family in a bad way. We usually never send mail through first class in the first place, so I don’t see the problem for us. However, I am sure this will be a problem for many other people. Our family sends mail often. I don’t believe the cuts that are going to occur will affect us in a negative way so we aren’t worried.
The cuts that are happening to the USPS show the way our society is changing. We need things much more rapidly than we did before. We are moving to the age of electronics and technology. All it takes is the click of a mouse and an email is sent. A letter could take days to arrive and now we don’t even have the option to choose one day shipping. I believe that these cuts are devastating, because so many people will lose their jobs, however it is necessary to keep the USPS alive. I truly hope that they can bounce back from these harsh cuts.

I think this change sucks. I have been hearing about it for a while now, but after these budget cuts people will really see the difference. I personally don't do much mailing, but like many others have said my parents receive bills and stuff, and thank you notes and invitations are also sent through the USPS. Now that next day mail is being eliminated, it won't change much, but that people will just have to look maybe three more days ahead, not that big of a deal.
What I think the real problem will be is when the USPS gets eliminated completely. I have a feeling this will happen in the next fifteen or twenty years. The internet is a great thing, for sure, but the way it is taking away from jobs held by over 500,000 nationwide is not so great. I guess if the internet becomes that much of a competitor, the USPS could go electronic. Im not sure how important it is to have a national postal service, UPS and FedEx are fine. I guess it is just sort of patriotic, I'm not sure if you've ever done it, but just stamping an envelope and putting it in that blue box at the post office is just so, American. So in the end i just hope the USPS stays afloat, the actual buildings and service would be ideal, but even online is okay with me, just to remain... American, for the feel.

This sort of thing has been happening for quite a while. The internet, and other forms of communication have been greatly increasing the speed of information transfer. However, these increases in efficiency have been costing a lot of people their jobs. Just look at the whole thing with outsourced jobs. India's been getting a large increase in manpower as far as customer support goes, because it's possible to pay the workers less there. However, these changes have been costing people quite a few jobs here at home.
Most of our mailing is now done on the internet, through e-mail or otherwise. It's free, and also arrives instantaneously. However, it has been costing postal workers jobs, and it's only adding to the number of jobless people. This whole thing with the loss of the one-day shipping may affect quite a few people. I doubt many people actually use one-day express shipping, because most people normally opt for the cheaper normal shipping. Despite that, I think this will affect the people who want something fast, to get it quickly for a gift, or something. However, it doesn't change the fact that a lot of people would be losing jobs, and I think it would just be better for them to raise the price of one-day shipping slightly. People don't like price increases, but it's a necessary evil.

This change will affect me and my family a little bit, mostly because we send and receive a lot of packages. Things won’t change that much though, we’ll just get packages a little bit later if we ordered the first-class one day shipping. Some families will be more heavily affected though, unfortunately.
This is worse for the USPS then the people because so many people will lose their jobs. Many stations are being shut down and the whole thing declining because everyone is ordering and sending their stuff online. I feel sorry for the USPS postal workers that are losing their jobs for budget cuts. No one in my family works there though so that is good and the layoffs won’t affect my family personally.

This is worse for the USPS then the people because so many people will lose their jobs. It will be harder for them to find a job in this economy.

I think this will affect my life at least a little bit. I don’t think it will affect it too much directly, but my mom depends on important documents and such getting places by certain times, for work. I think that’s one of the biggest ways the changes will affect people. However, it is hard to tell exactly how much affect it will have on everyone right now. I know, considering everything, that I probably will be one of the lucky ones if changes are made.
The article said 28,000 jobs would be eliminated if changes are made. That is almost 30,000 people without jobs, adding onto all the other unemployed people. That is a huge number of people unemployed. I think this whole thing is incredibly sad and it is so hard to know what to do in this situation. I genuinely hope the government figures some things out and soon!

These changes will definetly affect my family. My family orders a lot of stuff online and orders many different packages. It wont be a major factor that will change my family, but it will concern them. It’s not that we really need the product we got online fast, but having so many people order online these days, can really delay the process.
For me, I feel really sorry for the 28,000 postal workers that will have no occupation. The USPS Company does not have much money anyways, but having jobs taken away from them can be very harsh, in this economy. If anything, they should lower the salary of the employees.
This alteration will not drastically change the way mail works for me immediately. But it will hurt my father and his partners' law firm because. They are lawyers and are required to send many things by mail--primarily through the U.S. Postal Service. Their law firm sends decisions to judges and court administrators that need to be there a very specific and certain day. I know a lot of people; employees and citizens, rely on mail services for their work. It is a tragedy that they are changing so much.
ReplyDeleteI also think that this is a travesty because mail is such a dying art form. For the government to dedicate this only to comply with budget cuts it will make people merely start to electronically send things instead of sending hard copies which I think is compromising tradition. What if children want to send a letter to santa clause? I knew I used to do that on Christmas eve! People need to realize that sometimes you have got to send a letter on christmas eve and people especially children expect that letter to get to Santa Clause! We want good presents this year! At the federal discussion I wonder if people will bring up the different ideas that people have.

These drastic changes in the postal service won’t affect my family too much. We don’t usually depend on rush mail, and neither of my parents have a position in the postal service. There might be some indirect changes in my family though. All of our families may have to increase tax, as the unemployment rate goes up and more people are depending on the government.
I think that the the postal service should have found some way to not leave their employees out to dry. My family does not depend totally on postage mail, but we do use stamps for the occasional birthday card or greeting. It think that it was ok to lay some workers off, but not entire branches, because these little branches could be a major source of income for small towns, and if that is taken away they have nothing. The postal service should consider all the options.

This new system dealing with mail delivery isn’t extremely important to my family; neither will it affect us much. We don’t mail family or friends, instead we call or text, therefore the only things that come in the mail are things like advertisements. Nothing from my family is ever desperately needed to be shipped, most of my family lives either 15-45 minutes away, and we never ship anything to them. We find technology quicker and are more frequent users of it than handwritten mail.
For all the workers who are going to lose their jobs from this, I feel sorry for them. In this economy, they are definitely not the only ones with this problem. But to lose a job that still carries on some of the old traditions that has evolved due to overuse of technology is sad. So many people spend too much time on the internet, and it has even come to helping people do something as simple as writing that should be done as personally as possible. 28,000 people are going to lose their jobs from this transition. Even though this new cut back will not affect me, it will affect them. And for that sake, I wish something could be done for them.
My family will not be that effected by this. This will not affect us because we dont usably order stuff that we need mailed, we never buy things off the internet. For us to buy something off the internet is rare because my parents dont trust giving there info trough a computer and rather do it in person. And when we do order things we never select next day shipping because we can wait a couple of days. Like right now i ordered an invisible shield for my Iphone 4s and the delivery estimate was December 2 to December 7 and it has not come yet so i can kinda say it is getting slower.
ReplyDeleteI fell really bad for the people getting fired and not having a job and this does not only effect them the workers but also effects a lot of the americans who depend an next day shipping for there job and business and trying to get everything ASAP. But the people getting cut dont only have to go job searching but have to worry about their bills all because usps is in debt.

The cuts in the United States Postal Service is a great example to show how technology, although is good in many ways, can kill of the more traditional methods of doing things. Due to the internet, the United States Post Service is forced to cut its budget by 3 billion dollars. I don’t think my family will be affected too greatly. The only things that my family gets in the mail are magazines and bills. Now, bills can be paid online. As for magazines, I’m not quite sure how that would work without mail if one does not own an electronic tablet of some sort. That is why the United States Postal Service should never stop its services and duties.
Not only will many families that depend on the mail be affected but so will the thousands of families of the workers that the post office will and are laying off. Many people are already in need of jobs, and this cut is definitely not helping the unemployment rate. So many families will lose their main source of income due to this cut. The United States Post Services would save billions of dollars with this cut which will help the service stay afloat and save the environment but it will harm thousands of families.

The postal service is making the right move in my mind. They have expanded beyond there limits of money. If the postal service takes away the option for sending mail in a day or under it will have a great affect but they will save money and make the company more flexible as less and less people use the postal service. IF the postal service goes through with this they will save up to 3 billion dollars. Many people will be affected though. A lot of people use the postal service for the 1 day delivery as their business. It will affect them greatly.
This affects my family greatly because my dads job is fixing items he picks up cheaply and selling the items on E bay for over twice of what he bought the items for. Most of my household mailing is done through stamps and never on line. I do believe thought that the postal service downgrading the time that it takes to send letters.

This will not really affect our family that much. The only thing that effects my family is that we buy online a lot but we rarely use overnight shipping. Also no one that I live with or my relatives work for the postal service so we wont be affected financially.
This is a huge hit for our unemployment numbers because 28,000 people will get fired and that they will not be able to provide a paycheck to feed themselves or their family's. A lot of american do use the overnight shipping for important items so that will affect those people immensely. Businesses use this often and americans will have to wait longer for repairs, necessities, and accessories. Medical shipments and tests will also be delayed from this so peoples lives will be at risk. This is a major change and will have a negative impact on many americans lives.
This recent change in the postal system won't affect my family in any significant way. Although mailing letters and bills were once important, everything is changing with the new technology wave. It seems that everything is easier and faster with the use of the internet. Although the cost of a stamp isn't much, and the effort to mail a letter isn't great, people seem to want to take care of business the fastest way possible.
ReplyDeleteHowever, this decline in the postal service will greatly affect the 28,000 people now losing their jobs. I do think its best to keep the USPS up and running for the sake of these people, however nowadays we should be investing in a system that not only provides jobs, but also fast ant cost-effective.

ReplyDeleteWhat is happening with the USPS is very sad. Close to 30,000 people will be losing their jobs. My family frequently uses the postal service, however the over night shipping is not an option that my family relies on. Luckily non of my family members work for the post office.
The large unemployment numbers are devastating. This many unemployed people will not help our country's struggling economy. Also the lack of overnight shipping will be devastating as well. I know that my family and many others constantly use over night shipping. This is not good because now people who need to use overnight shipping will not use USPS and instead use UPS or FedEx.

ReplyDeleteI do not think that the change of the postal service will impact my family a lot. My family does not use the postal service a lot; the only thing they use it for is for bills, and (or) checks. No one in my family works at a post office, so I do not have to worry so much about it.
The shocking thing is that about 30,000 people will loose there job because of the postal change service. I never thought the postal service is the one job that would not be effect by anything. Anyway, the economy does not need another 30,000 jobless people roaming the streets.

ReplyDeleteThe Only way this will effect my family is the no more ONE day shipping. ONE day shippping was very usefull because when you needed something urgently you could go online and order it and have it on your door step the next day. From now on my family and I will have to prepar more. We will have to order things online earlier so that they will come when we need them.
Most of the stuff we buy is via on line. It is much easier and faster. There is also a very big selection of things you can order.

I do not think this change will affect my family very much. My family does not usually send mail at all, rather we use email and phone calls to communicate with each other. when ordering things online, we use amazon.com, which ships through UPS.
I think that it is terrible that 30,000 people will lose their jobs if this occurs. This also may be a severe blow to our economy, because 30,000 people create a lot of jobs.

The USPS ending first class mail could be a problem. My family especially always sends things overseas, and across the country, but not necessarily first class. I think that this will affect people who wait to the last minute to send mail, because they won't have this option anymore. I think that most households use mail via the internet, but there are some things that just have to be sent my mail, like packages. People will need to be more patient and more attentive when sending mail.
The USPS ridding of first class mail has not only affected the receiver, but also the workers who are senders of the mail. The many people who work in the facilities now being shut down will have lost their jobs. That makes for 28,000 people being jobless.

ReplyDeleteI think that USPS getting rid of the first class mail option can affect those who actually use and pay for the mail service. First class mail is an easy and convenient way to send last minute packages or things that can't be transferred over email. Usually, my family sends things through the email. So MY personal life won't be effected.
Another down fall of the USPS doing away with the first class mail option is the people who have worked in this industry for years, will no longer have a job/career unless they have been moved to a different position. Personally, I think the change will have more negative than positive effects on America and to the people that rely on First-Class mail.

My family still receives the majority of its mail via the USPS and although this is a major change and cutback for the USPS, I don't think that it will affect my family so much, because the range of 1-3 days was probably intended to make sure that they do not anger people if they get things delivered in more than 1 day. But this means that they are giving their carriers one more day. This also will help accuracy of delivery, I cannot count the number of times that the USPS has delivered the wrong mail to my house.
This is definitely a good move by the USPS, with it becoming more and more obsolete as email and other technologies becoming more and more prominent, the USPS' main priority should be to save money and make sure that they still are able to deliver more important and formal conversations, such as bills and invitations and such.
This barely affects me as I rarely use USPS for anything, especially the one day shipping. I really don't agree with this decision, especially in this economy. I get that the government is trying to reduce the US debt, but this is not the way to go about doing it. The best way for our country to make money is for it's citizens to have money. The best way for this to happen is to stimulate the economy.
ReplyDeleteCutting out 28,000 jobs is NOT the way to go about eliminating our debt. That means that there are now 28,000 more people who are unable to pay taxes and spend money, thus slowing the economy even more. In theory this will cut out $20 billion annually by 2015, but a LOT can change in four years including the president and the programs and plans that he/she implements, creates, and/or ends.

My family uses both postal stamp mailings and on-line mailings, just for different things. We send birthday cards and holiday cards throughout the mail, and sometimes for packages. But we also use on-line mailings for little things that aren’t as important. The whole idea of getting rid of next-day mail won’t drastically affect my life. This will actually have very little impact on me and my family because we often don’t sned anything or receive anything that would be needed the next day.
28,000 people have lost their jobs due to closing offices and getting rid of the next-day mail. This will seriously affect these peoples and their families lives, and it will be very hard for them to find a new job. I do understand why post offices are closeing, because many americans are now using different online sources to stay in contact But I don’t understand why they are getting rid of next-day mail. That type of mail may help peoples lives a lot.
I think that the Post Office is in the beginning of its death throes, and that even if it does recover it will never be as glorious as it once was. The lack of next-day shipping will not be too much of a factor for myself or my nuclear family; however, I know several people who depend on it for medication and such. The rise of online banking and email comes with a necessary reduction of traditional mail, and thus a reduced roll for the postman. However, the Internet is a dangerous place, more so than your Post Office, at any rate, and people who depend on safety for important documents should try to avoid email.
ReplyDeleteYes, twenty-eight thousand people will have lost their jobs, but it's a thin line between an institution that doesn't let people go in this economy and an institution that never lets people go and continues to hire, like the Greek National Railroad, which took in 100 million Euros last year and spent 400 million. We must guard against such a move, for as Machiavelli wrote, "It is better to appear mean, so as to avoid having to grant favors and gifts to anyone who asks. For if you do this, to preserve your reputation for liberality you must take your money from the citizens, or else from a neighbor. Therefore, a prince who is mean with money ends up more generous through not causing harm to his subjects, while a price who is liberal with his money ends up rapacious."

In my family, we use both online and postal mail, but the loss of next-day shipping would not affect us much. There are people who do depend on next-day shipping; however, it is understandable that the US Postal Service would cut these services since there are also many people who don’t. I do think that the downsizing of the USPS in general will probably lead to further efforts to digitalize our communications. The upside to this is that speed will not be an issue, as it is now with the loss of next-day shipping. However, from a practicality standpoint, there is no way to ship physical objects digitally at the present.
For me, the most troublesome part of this article to read was about the loss of jobs in the USPS. I understand that there is a goal of saving money with these actions, and I think that something must be done in an effort to keep afloat in our present economic state; however, it is still troubling that about 28,000 people will be out of work for the sake of downsizing. I hope that the USPS finds a way to keep sending things efficiently. However, I think that at this point there is a decision to be made between keeping jobs, keeping services, and staying in business. Unfortunately, in our present economy, it may be impossible to do all three.

My family will not suffer that much from the mail issue because we occasionally send and receive packages and mail. Half of our mail is spam and advertisement. People do rely on mail to get them through the day and in terms of instant communication, however, people should not worry that much about the loss of next-day shipping. In terms of realism, people do rely on mail to ship physical objects, as there are no means of doing that electronically at the moment.
What really troubles me about the whole scenario is the loss of jobs. USPS must find a way to make this more economically suitable, without the deterioration of jobs.
As we progress technologically, e-mail has become a more practical way of communication. Physically mailing something to get the word out has become more archaic. It is much easier to push a button to send instantly than to wait for the mailman and deliver the mail over a couple of days.
I feel this won’t affect me, but it will affect my parents. My parents receive packages and bills through the United States Postal Service. Although mailing letters and bills were once important, everything is changing with the new technology wave. People are now able to pay their bills online with paperless billing. There is less need for USPS now, it makes sense to simply let it go.
ReplyDeleteMy parents pay for my family's cell phone bill via internet. Except they also receive paper bills for electricity and other utilities from the USPS. I think that all mail should be turned into electronic mail. If and when that happens there will be less of cutting down trees and more money saved as well as saving the environment.

I feel like this change will have little to no affect at all for my family. Sure we receive a lot of mail, but barely anyone sends mail anymore through the postal service. I feel like it would seem like such a drastic change at first if the US postal service would take away next-day shipping because many people really depend on it to receive items quickly, but in the end it really does not matter all in all.
The most troublesome part of this all is the loss of jobs. The US is already in such a crisis with the economic depression that it seems crazy for us to cut even more jobs from what few were available now. Email has become the most efficient and practical way of sending messages quickly. It is also free with internet instead of having to buy postal stamps and envelopes and everything. Honestly I feel like we will eventually have to choose one or the other, 28,000 jobs or saving money and being practical in the long run.

This effects my family very deeply. We ship our packages with the USPS system each year as it tends to be cheaper. The Closure of several stores may leave us in a tight situation as we have packages to deliver all year long due to birthdays and work. This also means we may have to look at more expensive and annoying methods of shipment that could take longer. The biggest problem is that they are stopping overnight shipping. This is bad because my family is VERY bad at remembering holidays and birthdays, so we run it down to the last minute and then overnight for safety. But with no overnight shipping we may be disappointing clients and relatives.
This also effects America in some very intense ways. The economy is already in a very delicate, dangerous, and fragile state. This means that if we were to close down the locations, the economy would crash more and unemployment rates would skyrocket. I understand that the USPS is worried because of their loss of money and customers, but i think a simple solution would be to take USPS to the Internet as well and give people jobs as customer service and tech support. I understand this may not totally save them, but would at least keep the economy, and America, a little more stable.

While reading this article I find out this is bad for people because they send things all across the world. If they stop the shipping services that means they will be losing money. That’s why I don’t think they will stop the shipping because they will lose a lot of money. Especially during the holidays because that when a lot of people send a lot of stuff to the family members. I know this because my dad works for UPS and he doesn’t get home during Christmas until like 11 or 12. So if they do stop the services they are pretty dumb.
I don’t think they will stop the service because people use it a lot. My parents sometimes use USPS when they need bills sent off or other stuff. But a better way to do all of this is to make it all free. If it’s all free they wouldn’t have a problem at all sending anything

I don't think that this would affect me that much seeing as I don't use the postal service much. This will mostly affect people in small towns who use the usps for everything. The most it will do to my family is make us remember birthdays better
This wkill have a bigger affect on america a s a whole though because somme people need one day shipping to make deadlines or something like that. Also in many small comunities around the country people use the mail for everything and theese are some of the offices on the chopping block. There will be some changes for my family. Even though most of our mail is done using email, there are still things that we give or receive using the post office. Sometimes my family doesn’t get to ship or send things until the last minute, so losing the overnight option is bad. My grandmother usually sends cookies every few months, and if there are less people working in the postal services, then it will take longer to get here and could be ruined more easily. I think that everything will take longer to arrive with less people working on getting things to their destinations.
A lot of people are losing their jobs because of this cut back. It will be harder for everyone to find jobs since a large employer had to lay off so many people. I think that in the long run it was smart though. If the postal office had totally run out of money, then there would be even more jobless people. Using online ways to send things has become a lot more popular, and it would not be wise to keep so many people when there is not as much work.
