Current Event #13: World War III?

Current Event #13: World War III?
Due: Friday, January 13th

The U.N. nuclear agency has confirmed that Iran has begun enriching uranium at an underground bunker to a level that can be upgraded more quickly for use in a nuclear weapon than the nation's main enriched stockpile. The following article details the accounts of this recent breaking headline story surfacing in the wake of today's security alerts.

Iran's Underground Uranium Project by Suzanne Kelly

Iran's announcement that it has begun enriching uranium at an underground facility doesn't come as a surprise to nuclear security experts, but it does worry them that the program moves Tehran one step closer to developing a nuclear weapon.

"They announced last summer that they were going to do this," said David Albright, president of the non-profit Institute for Science and International Security in Washington. "It's part of this gradual process that I think shows Iran is on their way to developing nuclear weapons."
Iran says some 3,000 centrifuges are in operation at Qom, with an additional 8,000 machines capable of enriching uranium at its Natanz facility.

Right now, Iran is enriching uranium at a lower rate than would be needed for a nuclear weapon.
Tehran has said that its uranium enrichment efforts are tied to efforts to provide medical assistance to cancer patients. But that argument is a hard sell in the West, where a report issued by the International Atomic Energy Agency said that the Iranian government was developing technology that would be necessary for manufacturing a nuclear weapon.

The IAEA noted in a report last November that Iran had informed the agency more than two years earlier that the Fordo plant was under construction in the mountainous region of Qom province.
The plant is buried deep underground and deemed immune to an aerial attack, suggesting to some that Tehran is taking a strongarm approach in its refusal to bow to expanded sanctions, including sanctions aimed at Iran's central bank announced by the Obama administration just last month.

There has been no official response from the Israeli government, which was believed to be behind an aerial attack on a Syrian nuclear facility in 2007. Today, Israeli experts are calling for a diplomatic approach.
"This could be a cause of concern for Israel because the area of this site is so difficult to attack. If one day, Iran decides to cut its cooperation with the IAEA, it would make it easier to use such a site to make a bomb, but it's in the long term," said Meir Javedanfar, an analyst and lecturer on Iranian issues at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, Israel. "In the short term, I don't think Israel has too much to worry about because the site is still under inspection. In the long term, if things go wrong with Iran it could turn into a serious problem."
Western nuclear experts say it will take time for Iran to be able to produce weapon-grade uranium at Qom.
"I believe it will be one to three more years before they would have the capability" Albright said.
Some in the West hope they can be delayed.

Sanctions are one way the Obama administration has tried to squeeze Tehran, making it harder for Iranians to acquire the vital goods needed for their nuclear program. If sanctions don't work, experts point to efforts like cyberattacks and sabotage as other viable options intended to slow Tehran's nuclear development.
A computer virus known as Stuxnet effectively set back Iran's nuclear program in 2010 by launching a malware program that went undetected until damage to an Iranian nuclear facility had already been done.
Experts like Albright estimate that even if Iran were to continue to ratchet up the rhetoric and one day go so far as to kick out inspectors, it would still take six or seven months to manufacture weapons-grade uranium at its Natanz facility.

"The clock is ticking," Albright said. "So methods to bring Iran to the negotiating table to make concessions are all the more important now."

What You Will Do:
Upon reading the above article you will formulate your thoughts and opinions concerning the recent unveiling of nuclear facilities enriching uranium found in Iran. Could this mark the beginning of the absence of American Armed Forces in the region? Also be sure to take a look at the following video footage that was taken from CBS Face the Nation which details the events occurring in Iran http://youtu.be/m8dMxNdEyJ4 . What is your position on this issue? Do you view this as a threat to our country and others? Do you feel that America should interfere with this issue or take care of its country's problems at home instead?

After reading this article, I have mixed emotions and opinions. I believe if the US were to enter Iran and interfere with whatever is going on, it could result in an eventual war. However, if the US were to leave what's happening alone and it does turn out that Iran is in fact constructing a nuclear weapon, it could be extremely dangerous to the entire world. But in addition, there are many problems occurring in the US right now. I believe that we should focus on the problems inside the country for now, seeing as we just pulled out of Iraq.

The US has been patrolling the Middle East for about the past ten years, trying to avoid havoc from happening. It has mostly worked, but with a high cost. Many soldiers have been killed in battle. President Obama recently fulfilled his promise of pulling back the soldiers from Iraq, and so I believe it would seem absurd to send them into Iran immediately. My opinion is to wait for a while, and if it suddenly appears to be a major threat, go into Iran and try to sort it out.

Upon reading the article and viewing the video, my first thought that the US was being paranoid. At the present time, Iraq is enriching uranium at a lower rate than nuclear weapon. According to them, they are using it to assist cancer patients. Be as it may, it is unlikely to think that Iraq is planning to attack so soon after the departure of the US military. While some people may think it’s revenge, stirring another war is not the brightest idea. Other than enrichment of uranium, there is no other sign of nuclear build-up. Whatever is happening in Iraq is of no threat to us unless either country prematurely attacks. It would be safer to observe from a distance and interfere only when necessary. There are still problems in the US that needs attention, and worrying about other countries will only harm us if we get too involved.

In World War 2, people turned their lights off and used candles just in case a-bomb were dropped in the United States. In the fifties and the sixties, kids had to hide in their desk. Housewives would have to go back to working again for all the transportation vehicles. Kids do poorer in school because they would not have their moms helping out. We might have to be doing those things again.

There will not be a world war 3. All because Iran has started a nuclear plant in Iran does not mean we need to war with them. They could bomb in any other place. If they bomb us, we can go to war, but people need to be more creative about using their problems. War just kills a bunch of innocent guys. It’s depressing for families people at least one of their family members is at war and the families worry about their family members in war. Also, the soldiers got back from Iraq not long ago, and them going back to war, is just depressing. People need to be less selfish and deal with what they have. I know the United States is powerful, but other countries need to quit getting our attention and deal with their own countries’ problems.

"All because Iran has started a nuclear plant in Iran does not mean we need to go to war with them...I know the United States is powerful, but other countries need to quit getting our attention and deal with their own problems." A nation like Iran can never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon, because then we could never negotiate with them, no matter the circumstances. It is already very, very difficult to negotiate with them, and leverage as heavy as a nuclear bomb would make it literally impossible.

Do you really believe that the United States, the Great Satan itself, could not be the intended target? Or if the target was Israel, that is just as bad politically for this country since Israel is our investment. Also, I found it quaint that you hold such an idealistic view of America. Maybe you can grow up to be a housewife.

The fact that there will be a world war three is unquestionable; anything can happen if you give it a good amount of time. I don’t think this “uranium project” will have anything to do with WWIII because there is not much of a large disagreement. No body wants Iran to have nuclear weapons. I think that all that the US will do is arrange for some “accidents” to coincidentally happen to some top nuclear physicists in Iran. Read this article on an Iranian nuclear expert that had his car exploded. An unknown motorcyclist pulled up to him while he was driving and planted a magnetic bomb to kill him and his guards. Work of the US… no doubt; “Untraceable”… of course. URL: http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2012/01/11/peter-goodspeed-iranian-nuclear-scientists-deaths-no-mystery/

I feel like the US has gone through enough and needs to deal with the problems we have now, instead of the other countries problems. The government is getting people worked up about something that might not even happen. Who knows? Maybe we will have a World War 3. I do not see what the point of having another war. I think that the USA should not go and barge into Iraq again because we are still just trying to get our army out of there. I also think that if we keep fighting in wars, then it would not be so great for our economy. I also don't think that the citizens of the United States would be pleased at the idea and President Obama might not get very many re-election votes if he supports going back into Iraq. Also if we keep interfering with Iraq we may have them as a permanent enemy which would not be good for our country.

I also think that there are many other important issues that the USA needs to be worrying about right now instead of the business of other countries such as jobs and the economy. I also don't think that it is worth sending people to Iraq to risk more lives and ruin more families.

On the other hand, I don't think that Iraq is having the brightest of ideas to make a nuclear weapon. I don't like how so many countries are developing these types of weapons because if they were to use them, then many people could die. I also don't understand why Iraq needs these weapons because nobody is attacking them right now.

I think the US should just leave this alone and let other countries/organizations deal with this. Our army was just withdrawn from Iraq and if we were to just go back, after wasting so many resources withdrawing our troops, it would just be a waste. Our economy is already bad enough and renewing a war that our country is sick of is a very bad idea, considering it's almost election time again it would not be a good idea for Obama to send more troops into Iraq. The US should be worrying more about themselves and not other countries at the moment, we are getting better but one wrong move and our economy could crash again. We are in a very tight spot right now.

I think that Iraq isn't very smart to just randomly start making nuclear weapons right now, considering that a war had just ended less then a few months ago. Why make such dangerous weapons in an already war ravaged country? It's time for the people of Iraq to rebuild, not build more weapons of destruction.

After reading the article and watching the video, I’m torn between what the US should do. Just having pulled our troops out of Iraq, it would not be ideal to start another war this soon. However, if our nation’s safety depended on it, the president wouldn’t have a problem declaring another war. But considering we haven’t received a valid threat from Iran, I don’t think it’s the right time to make that decision. If we decide to be nosey, and interfere with Iran’s work, then that may end up backfiring.

Although a nuclear weapon in Iran does pose a serious threat, we have plenty of other issues to deal with in the meantime. Even if Iran was planning on bombing us, I wouldn’t be smart to do it anytime soon. If it was up to me, I would hold out until Iran posed a serious threat, and then proceed to take action. With soldiers just pulling out of Iraq, it would be extremely tough on them to go right back into another war.

I do not think the United States government should get physically involved with Iran’s new activity concerning uranium. I think it makes sense for us to talk with government officials, but it is completely possible that the government is working on cancer treatment, however unlikely that may be. To keep relations with Iran more friendly, I believe we should mind our own business until we are one hundred percent sure Iran is making nuclear weapons as not to get on their bad side. I am not saying we should wait until they have a bunch of weapons, but we should not jump to conclusions and risk upsetting anyone.
I believe that if Iran is doing anything dangerous we may get to a point later on when we will have to bring our troops back into that area, but they just started coming home, and we do not want the leaders of Iran to think we don’t trust them. Besides maybe talking with any officials, I think for now, we should mind our own business and try and solve problems that are going on in our own country.

I think that if the US was to go into Iran and mess around with whatever is going on, it could definitely result in an armed conflict. However, if the US were to not interfere with what's happening and it does turn out that Iran is making a nuclear weapon, it could be incredibly harmful to everyone on this planet. However, there are many problems happening in our own country right now. I believe that we should first fix the problems closer to home first, seeing as we just pulled out all of the troops of Iraq.

This seems like a very hard decision to make, whether to enter Iran and warn them of what may result if they continue operating their underground facility. There are acceptable reasons the U.S. has to interfere with Iran’s project, as well as not interfering. To me, there is a lot of tension occurring, specially because of my mixed feelings about a possible upcoming World War III. I think of America being very assertive, which is good, but we may become a major conflict in Iran because of our interfering, and to me that would seem like an aggressive step by the U.S. In addition, our interfering their project could cause World War III, because they may take offence in us stopping them, and they might attack, even if their original plans were not to.

If i were in control I wouldn't even send an assertive note, just notifying them to use their uranium wisely. Then, I would fortify my country in case of an attack, on the bright side we have allies too. This could become a much more risk saving plan, because now America seems to be a little too aggressive.

It does worry me slightly about the weapons that may be developing over in Iran. it seems like tensions between the United States and other countries in the Middle East continue to rise. To me it seems like history is repeating itself. reading in the History books the only other time when something like nuclear warfare was was at rise, but on a larger scale of tension, was during the Cuban Missle Crisis during the Cold War.

Just as the article said, it could be up to three to four years before Iran developes a fully functionall nuclear weapon. And it will be even longer before they decide to use it. There is no denying that one day there will be another World War. I just wish it weren't today

After reading this article, I have very mixed opinions. If the U.S goes into Iran and interferes with them, it could certainly lead up to another war. If the U.S does not enter Iran, there is a totally different situation. Leaving it alone would be extremely dangerous as well with the possible making of a nuclear weapon. As of right now, we should just stay as it is, since we just left Iran.

The US has been going through the Middle East for about the past ten years by trying to avoid havoc from happening. This has worked, but with severe consequences. Many soldiers have been killed in war, leaving thousands of family members crying. President Obama recently made his promise of pulling back the soldiers from Iraq, and so I believe it would be quite absurd to send them into Iran a month later. My opinion is to wait for a while, and if it suddenly appears to be a major threat, go into Iran and try to sort it out. As of right now, the U.S is in a crisis: Go too early, and another war will occur, but go too late, the whole world will be devastated. There is no certain way that Iran is making a new nuclear weapon, but you never know.

Reading this article and watching the video made me worry a little bit about what will happen next. You can tell that there are definitely a lot of tension between the two countries. I honestly do not think that U.S. going to Iran to stop them will cause a lot more trouble than we already have. I think that Iran making these powerful weapons is a problem already, but going there to interfere will obviously make it more worse, and it an possibly lead to another war.
You can go about this situation a lot of different ways, and the outcomes will still turn out bad. I don’t think U.S. should interfere with Iran anymore. Unless Iran does attacks the U.S. first, they should not be taken as a threat to our country.

I really don't think that Iran would ever launch the nuclear missiles at us because we have done so much to help them in the past. But i think we should be cautious and watch what they are doing.

After reading the article and watching the video, I am not too sure how to feel about the topic. The development of nuclear is definitely frightening. It would be very dangerous to mess with that country because they can just bomb and kill everyone. Thus, I think, although the United States may be acting a little nosy, it is doing the right thing. As tensions in the Middle East continue to rise, it would be better if the diplomacies could peacefully negotiate and persuade Iran to stop. But, if things get worse and worse, I think it would better for the governments to intervene, by any means necessary, now instead of waiting for all the people to be killed first. We saw the after effects of the Hiroshima bombing and it would be best if that did not happen to us. Better late than never.

All said and done, I still believe that the United States government should go about this peacefully. The method of messing up the Iranian economy is a little bit aggressive compared to what comes to my mind. I think because Iran is willing to sit down and talk about this issue, the government should put up its tactics for a while. In the meantime, the citizens of countries all around the world might as well prepare for a nuclear bombing, like in World War III. It’s not very possible that Iran will create an atomic bomb this fast but it might take you by surprise someday. So it’s best to just be cautious and careful.

  19. Iran is, to use the cliche, a rogue nation that does not cooperate with international bodies or listen to reason. The obstinacy of the Iranian government is dangerous to the United States, dangerous to the Iranians, and dangerous to the world as a whole. Should Iran's actions result in a conventional war, they would be completely destroyed, and should they somehow be able to start a nuclear war, all projections indicate that they would be able only to drop a single nuclear weapon - and we have thousands. They can take their pick of and ten square miles or so, and we can flatten their entire country.

Historically, the United States' ability to negotiate with foreign government that we do not like has consisted of 9mm shells and illegally funded guerrilla forces. Ever since the Iranian Hostage Crisis during the Carter Administration, America has simply lost its backbone. To put it simply, no one is afraid of us anymore (except when we literally have soldiers with rifles pointed at them) and the Iraq war did not help.

I do think it is possible to have another world war, but I think it is very improbable. The whole world saw what happened in WW2 and I think that nobody wants to go through that again. I also think that if we do have another world war this one will turn out worse than the others. Due to the increase technology I fell that this war could be the last war if it accually happens. It could also wipe out the human race.

I do not believe that the United states will get in another world war. People are already complaining about the cost of the Iraq war. If the United Sates get in another world war, the cost will be much bigger than the Iraqi war. Thst is why I do not think the united states will get into another world war.

    1. Although it's true that for the most part the vast majority of nations who saw the bomb drop during WWII would be terrified of using any nukes; but thats just the reason they get them. Iran saw what happened with Japan and realized they are becoming the U.S.'s rival, and our track record isn't good with our rivals. Establishing a nuclear stockpile is the only way that they have any leverage over us. Also, the cost of the war is irrelevant considering the fact that launching nuclear weapons would be the main, if not only, form of combat.

After reading the article and watching the video I am a little confused on what to believe or think. The United States has all ready gone through so much and these problems and thoughts are just making it worse. If we [the United States] were to leave the issue in Iran and not worry about it there is a high chance that there will be war. But if we stay with the issue and try to fix it could turn around the problem, or the problem could automatically back fire and there could be war. I think that the United States should worry about our causes/problems for now and hold back on the issue but if it continues to get worse then we should immediately take action.

I view this as a threat to all the counties in the world, because the people of Iran are not very bright because they just ended a war and now there looking for another one by making nuclear weapons. If Iran were to start another war then my first answer would be to just throw a couple atomic bombs on Iran to stop the war and ends all the problems on the other side of the world.

I think that this is a big problem. All the signs lead to them constructing a bomb but sapping their economy won’t really solve it. We need more proof that they are not just doing what they said they are. Acting on our part could also lead to more issues because they will have to power to attack us. I think that our country should monitor them but not act. Other countries that are closer to them should do most of the action. We have enough to deal with right in our own country and taking on potential problems could really hurt us. We need to just back off but be ready for action if we have too. We never seem to take this passive position but I think doing that would be best for our country.

The prospect of nuclear war is definitely a bit frightening. At the same time, though, we can only hope that the Iranians feel the same way. Given how they haven’t been negotiating, I don’t think a diplomatic solution is going to work. The best course of action is to try to delay the nuclear programs as much as possible. Stuxnet was a great example. So, even if they aren’t disrupted. How long will it take until they get a weapon? During the Manhattan project, it was estimated that it would need about 50000 centrifuges running at top speed to produce ONE kilogram of weapons grade uranium per day. How many does Iran have? No more than 20000. It’s going to take a while. Then if they do get enough, what do they do with it? Build a missile? Possibly, but not likely. From what I’ve heard, Iran isn’t capable of producing Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM), and the missiles they do have need to be fired from relatively close. Israel might be the only target for this approach. So if they want to target the US? Sneak it in? Send a bomber?

The air defense systems in the US and other countries are extensive, and so if they sent a plane, it probably would not get through. Even if it did get through, and did do damage to a major city, the US, and most other major nuclear powers, have enough nuclear weapons to destroy the world several times over. Iran would be wiped off the map almost as soon as they were identified as the source of the attack. So in truth, I don’t understand this. People go all crazy over Iran developing nukes. So what? The nuclear deterrent from the cold war era hasn’t gone anywhere! There’s still submarines on standby, loaded with enough conventional and nuclear missiles to level Iran several times over. There’s a reason nuclear war never started, and with any luck at all, it never will. At best, it’ll be a war with one, maybe two nuclear strikes from Iran against Israel, and then they get squashed under the massive hail of conventional (most likely not nuclear) ordnance from all the other countries. Yipee!

  24. I don't think that Iran possibly making nuclear weapons should be a concern for America at the moment. Firstly,Iran is enriching Uranium at a lower rate than what would be needed to produce nuclear weapons. Unless it is certain that Iran is making nuclear weapons, the US should not be concerned. I personally don't believe that the US needs to get involved with something like this at the moment and state the country is in. Our main focus needs to be in creating more jobs and getting out of this recession. WE need to solve problems here, not interfere with issues far away from home.

After reading this article and watching the video, I doubt that immediate involvement in this new nuclear development will be the best action for the US to take. There is still a great deal of uncertainty surrounding the possible use of these uranium developments in Iran, especially since the current rates of uranium enrichment would not be enough to develop nuclear weapons. While extreme danger could result if the uranium were used for weapons, the intervention of the US would not be worth the risk of starting an unnecessary conflict between the US and Iran if the situation is in fact harmless. Therefore, I think that going to war on a hunch such as this could end up as a tragic waste of resources and human lives, and that we should be careful to know exactly what is going on before getting involved in the affairs of a foreign country in cases such as this.

I think it will be very important to moniter Iran closly to make sure they do not make any Nuclear Weapons. It will also be important to keep monitoring them so that they do not make any more advancemts with the uranium they are using currently. There are many mixed opinions though. There are many different approaches you could take to this problem but I think there are 2 that the government would consider doing. Either go into Iran and make sure they do not create Nuclear weapons. If we were do that that may spark a war which we do not want to get involved in right now because we are trying to focus on Iraq. Or we could lay back and just hope they do not do any bad things. I just think we should try and stay out of a war right now but if a country threatens us about something is is worth investigating.

If there is ever a World War 3 I think that this is the way that it would start. If they do make weapons they are not only a threat to the US but also other countries like Israel. After reading the article and watching the video i think that we should not freak out for now. It could be that Iran is making a nuclear weapon and if they are this could be a huge danger to us and the rest of the world and could be the begining of another war. If we go in and check though then they will only get mad and that could also start a war. I think that for now we need to stay out of other countries business and just deal with the problems that our country has and make it better.

Iran is undeniably designing a nuclear program to be able to use nuclear weapons in war, that part is undisputed. I do believe that if their nuclear weapons became fully operational, threat of war would be imminent. This is not because of the nature of our relationship with Iran, but because nuclear weapons cannot be handled thoughtfully, and by nature are impossible to control. It is hypocritical for us to be obsessing over Iran's nukes, when we have far more than any other nation. The dismantling of all nuclear arsenals is the only way to keep ourselves from completely destroying civilization.

  32. I don't think this will be the start of World War 3, at least not any time soon. It's pretty obvious that they're doing something fishy, such as building a nuclear weapon, but the government of Iran wouldn't be as dumb as to attack another nuclear country or an ally of one. The problem with this is that terrorist organizations could gain these nuclear weapons and potentially use them against the West.
I think the U.N. and other world organizations/alliances should work with Iran and work together to prevent rogue organizations from attaining these weapons. America should take a part in it, however we shouldn't go too far with it, after all, we have one of the largest nuclear arsenals of any country.

This irritates me so much that I cant even know where to begin. We JUST pulled out of Iran. We have trifled here just a little too much already so I think we need to just let this go and see how it progresses naturally. I say this because I fear we have pulled out, and now we are squeezing their economy, which will just give them more of a reason to rebel and we will be back in by this coming Christmas. If anyone had done this to America while we were weak, we would not have developed into the great country we are today. I know that this is of concern, but not right now. We should keep an eye on it but from a distance. If we kind of back off then we will be MUCH less likely to aggravate them into weaponizing their uranium and starting a nuclear war we wont be able to return from.

I think we should worry more about our own shores and problems, and MUCH less about theirs. This will give both sides some breathing room and restore some peace. If we attempt to force peace, it will not happen. I think we have done just about meddling over there and should simply let themselves develop. I am worried, but I think we are WAY out of hand by tightening their economy. From what we know, they are using it for cancer treatment, and so we should believe them until we have some REAL concrete proof that they are using it for nuclear weapons. We deserve at least a year before we send the troops back. Would’nt you resent America if they took away YOUR freedom?

  34. I think that we should not jump to conclusions about this situation, although Iran would be a huge threat to the rest of the world with a nuclear weapon it would look even worse for us if we try to stop them from developing a harmless nuclear energy program. This does not seem the case though, if the Iranian government decides to shut down the Straits of Hormuz we have a perfectly good reason to take greater steps to stop Iran from having this program. I think that our ideas of sending viruses into the plant to screw up their computers and programs and to set up sanctions to squeeze the Iranian economy are good starts to nip any nuclear threat in the bud, but if the Iranian government decides to continue its program no matter what state its economy is I feel that we have every right to stop them.

In this article I find that there is no threats to America, I still don’t understand why Iran would possibly make a nuclear weapon. I know that we have made hundreds, but a nuclear weapon is very powerful and it can take the lives of thousands. I feel that we need to take action on this act but also we need to have a discussion about the use of advance technology. There is no way that this could break out in a war or even World War III. WWII was a very powerful and big war between many countries and this is just a breaking news kind of distraction that people disagree on.
I am neutral with this topic, this is new news for me I don’t know too much about it but I feel it’s something we need to think about and keep in mind; it could break out in chaos. We should interfere because this is a nuclear weapon we are talking about that could kill thousands so we should definitely take action.

I do not think that Iran is capable of creating any nuclear weapons at the moment. First, Iran needs to produce the materials necessary to manufacture a nuclear weapon (which they neither have nor have to ability to obtain any time soon). Then, they need to somehow send this missile to America. I do not think it is a logical idea to think that a bomber capable of carrying a nuclear weapon across the Atlantic Ocean would not get noticed sometime along the way. So with that idea out of the picture, the only other realistic way is to launch an Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile. America is equipped with a plethora of anti-missile weapon systems to prevent missiles like this from reaching the country, so this idea is just as likely at failing. There are a lot of ifs in this situation, and I just don't think Iran has the ability to bomb another country on a nuclear level.

After viewing the video and reading the article, I think that the U.S should not get involved. We have so many problems still not solved, the last thing anyone in this country want is more trouble. We are in so much dept, and thousands of people are unemployed, going homeless and unable to provide for their families. We should focus more on saving our own country before worrying about what other countries are doing.

Although it is very hard to do, we should stay away from the business of other countries espically if it involves nuclear weapons that could start a war and in this case Irans' plans include just that. But the thing is we do not know exactly what they are doing and what their plans are. It is important that we keep the U.S safe but right now, it's more important to focus on the fact that the war with Iran had just calmed down and troops are being sent home. Now instead of thinking too much about other problems, let's all be thankful our troops are going to be reunited with their families again. And find ways to solve our huge problems that we have going on right now.

I think that the United States has a great dilemma to face. To prevent Iran from creating their own nuclear weapon, the US would have to risk creating an enduring enemy with them by interfering. On the other hand, if we don’t stop them, we risk never being able to negotiate with Iran, as well as a possible attack. I think that this could be a threat to everyone, and the US should keep good tabs on Iran’s process, and interfere if necessary. While they are waiting, America should continue taking care of its country’s problems, and improve as much as possible.

I have a very strong opinion about Iran, and them wanting to build atomic weapons. For if they were able to complete the task at hand, they would be very dangerous country to not only the US, but the world. Iran is a very corrupt, poor country. When a nuke is made, it would be easily put into the wrong hands. Remember when we thought Iraq had a bomb, we ended up having a 10 year war with them. We had no real proof they had the bomb. Iran on the other hand has the ability to make the bomb, and we must stop them before they have it and we go to war.

Even though, the US has domestic problems. They are nothing close to what they could be when a nuclear bomb is smuggled into one of our main ports, blow up and kill millions. We should not have an expensive war with Iran, but rather get to the underground facility and find and blow the place to the surface. For the west and Israel's security we need to act now.

Making interactions with Iran during this time of construction for them is good and bad in my opinion. If we have interference with Iran, and attack their economy, they could revolt against us and possibly cause a World War 3. After already having lost so many soldiers in the past few years, more is not needed along with rivalry. I really don’t think fighting solves problems, it just creates depression. On the other hand, if we act now, we could save our country and others from nuclear attacks. It is hard to say exactly whether or not taking action on this is the right thing to do.
The video pretty much summarized what the article said. I just wish conflict between countries would cease, even though I know that’s almost impossible.

I think that Iran building a weapon would not be a constructive step toward peace in the Middle-East. I think that violently reacting toward the news that a weapon is going to be built in Iran is not a good choice for the United States to make. I think that if they make that choice there will be a greater chance that Iran will want to build the weapon. If Iran successfully builds a weapon, they will be a very powerful, and feared country. It will be harder to ensure and make progress towards peace if they have this weapon. I think something needs to be done about this possible threat. However, before any decisions are made, it is necessary to further investigate and discuss the threat. There is a very high safety risk involved in this problem , for many Middle-Eastern countries, as well as many other countries. Before we start another war, different tactics should be used to stop Iran from building a weapon.

I believe that the U.S. should take some sort of action regarding the development of Iran's nuclear program. Although they do not possess nuclear weapons yet, it is a looming threat that the whole world-not just the U.S., should not have to face. Iran is an incredibly has an unstable government and a leader who is unfit for office. Because of this, they are in no position to possess weapons that are detrimental to world peace and sovereignty. That being said, I do not think that the U.S. should have any type of troop occupation in Iran. We just pulled out of a pointless war with Iraq, and we still have troops abroad in Afghanistan. It would be ridiculous and not right to send soldiers in harms way to stop nuclear proliferation in Iran. Although Iran is unreasonable, there should be some way to peacefully yet effectively terminate Iran's nuclear program.

I think that Iran building a nuclear weapon is a step forward in negotiating with Iran and the Middle-East. This way I feel like we can start to take steps forward in channeling Peace with the Middle-East. If the Us reacts with war or violently I think that will cause more harm then just trying to negotiate with them. I think Iran will not want to make a weapon if we try to make peace with them. I think that since the last war we got into and didn't know how to get out, I think it would be best not to get into another war right now especially because we just got out of the last one. The USA should use different tactics other than war. If the Middle East builds nuclear weapons I think there will be a very high safety risk for the USA. When I read this article I was surprised the Iran was enriching uranium to make nuclear bombs. I know the article states Iran is no were near the technology to make nuclear weapons but this info still scares me. I know the history of Iran may have changed with the people but due to there history I do not think it is safe for them to start manufacturing nuclear weapons. Iran has made many rational moves which involved attacking little Kuwait for its oil angering the whole world. This will be a mark of absence for American troops because we do not want to anger Iran further.

I view this as a major threat to the USA but I find no solution to it. There is nothing we can do. If the USA invades Iran we will be looked upon as mean bullies (couldn't think of a better word) from a political point of view. Plus if Iran does succeed in making bombs even with our forces there we will be the first target. I believe we should do nothing for our own sake.

I think it’s very important to acknowledge the issue at stake here. I do think it is a possibility that the United States of America is under a threat currently. Primarily, I think that is essential that more initial steps are being taken before immediately considering a discovery of Iran a death sentence. The United States of America is very quick to think that it is under attack and retaliate at impractical measures. Also, another factor to take in to consideration is how much we can trust the information the Iranian government and press releases, we do not know exactly what we can believe or how truthful their statements are concerning their science experiments and advances.

I think a way the way the Israeli government is handling it is really the best way to go. Diplomatic solutions are usually the only way to settle a controversy that concerns wars or things of that sort. I think the United States of America should show Iran that we’re their allies so that the Iranian government will have more faith in us if we try to settle things diplomatically. I hope to see this progress as a relationship between the countries and foreign affairs instead of continuing an unsettled conflict.

When I read the article I was shocked that Iran is "testing/using" these nuclear bombs. I really do not see the point of making a bomb that powerful. Of course, this issue is very important, not just to the US but to the entire world. When any country begins to manufacture nuclear weapons, their intent cannot be good. I think it's rather hypocritical of us to be so upset about Iran manufacturing nuclear weapons when we have so many ourselves - but then, with a country in the state that Iran is in, it isn't good to take any chances. I definitely think that the US should get involved, especially if it looks like the Iranians have moved over to manufacturing weapons.

As it stands currently, I believe the best thing to do is wait for Iran to make the first move, either kicking the inspectors out or making the shift to fabricating weapons. If that happens, then we should take the next step. It wouldn't be a good idea to jump the gun before we are sure that they are trying to hurt us.

Nuclear weapons have only been used once in the hisory of man, and that was when we took a calculated risk and bombed hiroshima and nagasaki to end WWII. I think that the united states should be doing all that they can to stop this development because if iran was lying about this before then it must be very important to them for some reason. there must be a reason that iran wants nukes and it probably isnt to give them to charity so that the rare camels can have protection. the US should take care of this immediately.

If you saw on the news right now that within 90 minutes nuclear missiles were going to hit all across the USA what would you do? If Iran was lying about even having these facilities what makes you think that now we know the whole truth? I think that they may already be at the stage to be developing "nukes". If we do not interfere and a nuclear device is launched there is not much we could do about it. Even it we somehow disabled it mid-flight we would still suffer fallout. It would be catastrophic. In the end we should be more prepared in the case that Iran has nuclear devices pointed at us.

I have mixed opinions regarding this. America already looks bad since we try to involve ourselves in every little thing happening in the world, so it would look like we were just paranoid about someone getting enough uranium to start a new world war. However, if Iran were to be allowed to get enough weapon-level uranium, it would be bad for the whole world. We wouldn't have any leverage to stop them, and they wouldn't have any reason to listen to us.

I think that what we should do is to deal with our internal problems first. I think that currently these are more important as the Iranians need at least a year before they can get enough weapon grade uranium to make a bomb. We should wait until Iran makes a move that shows that they are definitely planning to make a bomb. If that happens, then we move in. If it doesn't, well, we don't want to have another Iraq war that we can't possibly win.

Iran could be just doing what they are saying but it is quite likely that they are making nuclear weapons behind the scenes. If Iran really is creating some sort of nuclear weapon there needs to be something done about it.

I think that the United States should wait for a while before deciding to enter into Iran. Putting forces there could turn into a long drawn out war, over something that’s not even been proven to be true. On the other hand a quick military presence put in Iran could stop or slow down processes on making a nuclear weapon. I personally think that the Untied States should wait a little before deciding to do anything at this point.

We shouldn't be in a race for nuclear weapons.

If we do get into a race for nuclear weapons, we could endanger the whole world. We probably have enough nuclear weapons to destroy the whole world. So Iran finally has the potential to have nuclear weapons. Great. Juuuust great. To be quite honest i really dont see why its a big deal. In this day and age, a country withour nuclear power is like a little kid... versus like Logan or something. Everyone is well aware of the destruction nuclear weapons posses (after hiroshima and whatnot) and thats why a nuke has not been dropped since. At this point, any major problems between world powers that maybe sixty years ago would have launched us into a third world war, are really not so threatening. This is because EVERYONE has nukes. And because of that, no ones going to drop them. When the US bombed japan, there was suspicion of Germany having one, but no confirmation. NOw, if the US were to bomb any one (of importance that is, Russia, China, etc.) they would retaliate immidiatey. So i believe, until radiation suits or any form of protection is readily available, no ones going to go to world war iii, for fear of getting nuked back. Because of course, world war iii will inevitably be all out nuclear war. And i second Henry, everything you said, jeanie, was absolutely ridiculous.

I think it is good that American forces are not there but that we should try remotely to slow down the progress of Iran’s nuclear program and develop a defense system that is more effective against the launch of nuclear weapons. I do not necessarily trust Iran with weapon-grade uranium, but they are a ways from developing such technology. I think this could very possibly be a future threat but I do not think that they will be for quite a while. I think that right now, we should focus on cleaning up our own mess, because we have a massive clean-up to begin and we aren’t doing a very good job of getting it done. In summary, I think that we should fix our own problems and develop a defense system against nuclear missiles or other nuclear devices and then if Iran appears to be more of a threat, take action. If we leave them unchecked they may stop driving towards nuclear weapons at the pace they are currently because we won’t be breathing down their necks all the time.

Since we have been making such an effort to retrieve our troops from Iran, we should not have more troops sent there. This would just make matters worse. Also, Iran is not expecting to just bomb the United States without retaliation. People will be people, and if one person attacks the other, there will be retaliation. Also, if you see a scary person on the road, you wont just go attacking that person because of their looks. The same situation with Iran. Let them build whatever they want, for self defense; but we shouldn't go attacking them over a prediction. The US has a lot of problems in our own country right now. Going back into Iran would be a waste of valuable resources and time. It could start a war that we are not prepared to fight. I think that we still have time to solve our problems and investigate Iran at a later time. Fixing the US should be our first priority.

After reading this article I was kind of nervous. I think that the U.S. needs to be more careful and cautious of what they do, especially since Iran is already getting their weapons prepared. The U.S. does not need to get into anymore trouble with Iran. I think that we need to keep the troops home as much as possible, so they don’t have to go off somewhere not very important

    2. I think we should seriously consider the threat in the fact that Iran is making uranium. It is possible that they are just making it for other types of technology, but given with the war and all of that, i just don't see that being the case.
