Girl mistaken for skunk gets shot By Saeed Ahmed

    http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2012/10/22/relative-shoots-costumed-girl-after-mistaking-her-for-a-skunk/?hpt=hp_bn1

Late on Monday night a young girl was shot after she was mistaken for a skunk. A nine year old that was attending a Halloween party was shot by her relative that is yet to be identified. The young girl was dressed in all black and it was passed eight pm and the sun had long set. One of her relatives saw her on a hill and mistook her as a skunk then shot her with his shotgun. The Pennsylvania police dont know whether they will charge the unknown relative yet. The girl was flown thirty miles down the road to the hospital after being shot in the neck, back and arm.

I have no idea how that poor girl didnt die. If many people get shot in the neck thats game over for him. Also how can you mistake a nine year old as a skunk. That would be a huge skunk. The police report said that the man was not drunk nor had he been drinking. My other question is how did none of his relatives see him with a gun and not say a word as he shot at the unknown object. In my mind they are just as much at fault as the shooter. I hope the girl makes it but dont think the man should go to jail. He wouldnt shoot at his relative for no reason and I think by the time his family is done with him he is going to be praying for jail.

    1. I think there is more to the story than the article posted. No one in a right state of mind goes and shoots at something randomly at a halloween party. The relative must have known people were attending the party and it was a possiblilty it wasn't a skunk. My speculation is that the relative had part taken in a few drinks or something of that sort. I also wonder why the girl was out in the dark and not with the rest of the party.

I also wondered why the litter girl didn't die. I guess that she is just really tough! Another question I had was why did the little girl's relative bring a real gun to a costume party anyways? Who does that? I do agree that it was not smart of the girl to go off by herself in the middle of the night. But it should have been clear to the relative that unsafe to shoot a gun, especially at a costume party!

I was very sad when I read this article. I was also mad at the same time because how can someone how isn't drunk mistake a girl for a skunk? I thought she was going to die because she got shot in the neck and most people die when they get shot there. I hope her relative goes to jail and I hope she survives and never has to go through a situation like this in her life.

    4. This story is really odd to me. I don't see how the 9-year-old's relative mistaked her for a skunk although she was on a hill in all black. I agree with Connor: the article is obviously missing a lot to it. It just makes no sense how someone mistaked a human being for a skunk and had not consummed any alcohol. I'm not sure if i would want the relative to go to jail. An average relative wouldn't want to shoot another family member but like i mentioned earlier, i do believe that there is more to the story. It's just a miracle that the young girl didn't die.

“A ticking time bomb: What's behind the instability in Mali?” by Faith Karimi and Erin Burnet
    CNN.com, published October 21, 2012
    URL: http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/21/world/africa/mali-q-a/index.html?hpt=wo_c2

The West African country the Republic of Mali, which was once seen as the model of democracy in Africa, has recently gone into a state of chaos. Mali, after gaining independence from France in 1960, established a stable democracy in 1992 after a period of rebellions and dictators. That was until March, when the military seized control of the country following a riot over inadequate protection from a rebel group in the country called the Tuareg. This created an opportunity for the rebels, who seized control of northern Mali in the power dispute. In the areas the Tuareg, using Libyan weapons, conquered; a power struggle started between the Islamic radical rebels and the locals. There is fear that an al-Qaeda group associated with the U.S. ambassador death could start to influence and control the north region. The rebels have banned music and sports television, and have started brutal actions (such as public stoning’s); but have been forced to retreat some. This event is important to World History because military intervention and/or war is likely.

I think that this is a terrible and sad situation. The people in Mali, especially the north, must fell threatened and terrified by the recent chaos and oppression in their country. It must be very scary to live in a place where brutality is common and violence could break out at any moment. I can’t relate this to any personal experience, but it reminds me of part of the movie Ironman. In the movie villages are invaded by terrorist with powerful weapons, and they are brutally destroyed and raided with brutal violence. The situation in Mali sounds very similar. This relates somewhat to what we have been studying in class. It has rebellions against the government, like what happened in China and Greece. It also has democracy falling apart, like how it did in Athens, Greece. I am worried for the wellbeing of the people in Mali. Do you think order will ever be reestablished in Mali?

    1. i think that this is very sad how a country that has gone through lots has had to go through this recent military overthrow, especially since it had just established a well-organized government years before. If Al-Qaeda does indeed enter Mali and take control, it could possibly lead to another war, similar to what happened in Iraq and Afghanistan just a decade ago.

    2. This depresses me, that in this world there still remains such violence. Because we live in an extremely first world environment, I cannot personally imagine myself in the situation of a Malian citizen. I do hope that soon the struggle for power will cease.

Ex-CIA officer pleads guilty to one charge in leak case, Carol Cratty, Jason Hanna

Ex-CIA official John Kiriakou pleaded guilty of revealing the identity of another CIA official. This information was classified but Kiriakou still revealed the information to a reporter. Kiriakou also plead guilty to other allegations brought against him. These include the unveiling of another agent's identity in 2002. This information later lead to the Guantanamo Bay waterboarding scandal. He also pled guilty to lying to the CIA review board about the book he was writing. He is now facing about 30 months in prison

I personally feel that 30 months is not enough time for the crimes he committed. The information he revealed could cost that official’s life. Not only that but the information is classified for a reason. When you sign on for the CIA you take an oath and he broke that oath. Also he lied to the CIA review board about a book he was writing. I am guessing this also has classified information. So again he is breaking his oath and the law.

New York Court Finds Pole dancing Revenue can be taxed, Daniel Wiessner
    Yahoo News, 10/23/2012
    http://news.yahoo.com/n-y-court-finds-pole-dancing-revenue-taxed-175910578.html

On Tuesday October 23, 2012 the New York state court agreed in a 4-3 vote that pole dancing would not be qualified for tax exemption under Dramatic and musical arts performance. The owners of "Nite Moves", an exotic dance club near Albany, New York, tried to defend themselves from a $125,000 tax bill on admission fees, beverage sales, and private dances between 2002 and 2005 by saying that exotic dance qualifies for tax exemption because "It is difficult to preform and requires practice and choreography.". They also said that "The people who paid these admission charges paid to see women dancing. It does not matter if the dance was artistic or crude, boring or erotic," "Under New York's Tax Law, a dance is a dance."

I feel that the New York state court was correct in saying that exotic dancing should not be qualified for tax exemption, because although the owners of the club may be correct that pole dancing requires practice and choreography, it still is a bit unethical, and most likely majority of people would agree that pole dancing is not real dancing.

I am responding to the Ex CIA agent that has pleaded guilty to multiple accounts of revealing identities of other agents. He is only getting 30 months which I agree is way to small of a sentence for something that is so severe. That could of jeopardized those agents and put them into harms way if someone would have heard of the revealed names. The man in my eyes has not been punished enough and some harsher penalties should have been taken.

'Goosebumps' as a daredevil jumps from edge of space by Dugald McConnell

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/14/us/skydiver-record-attempt/index.html?iref=allsearch

Australian Daredevil broke a world record this past week. His name is Felix Baumgartner, and he set the new world record of jumping to earth from 128,100 feet from the past record set in 1960 of 102,800 feet. He rode a balloon up into space, saluted and then stepped off of a very small platform towards Earth. He fell towards Earth at more than 830 m.p.h. and it took him about 4 minutes and 30 seconds. He got a little out of control during his fall but then regained control and was able to break the sound barrier. He pulled his parachute and landed on the ground with both feet then fell to his knees and pumped his fists. This is relevant to history because he broke a world record and proved that a human can break the speed of sound.

As I read about this online and saw it on television I first thing that I thought was how cool it was. Then I thought about how scared and freaked out I would be if I did that, I probably wouldn't be able to get out and fall to Earth. I can't really connect this with my life because I would never be able to do this, I would be way to scared, but I think the story is amazing. This story really doesn't connect with what we are learning about now in history. However, we are learning about things that happened in history, and in 20-100 years this story will be something that major happened in history that people will look back on. Now it is something amazing for mankind that is record breaking for this century. Will he want to set a new record and jump again?

Paraplegic survives 3 days stranded in NM desert by Susan Montoya Bryan

Ricky Gilmore, of Newcomb New was stranded in the desert for 3 days with no food or water and he survived. Gilmore is a paraplegic, who lost the use of both his legs in a car accident 4 years ago. He was hitch hiking 10 miles away from his home when he was picked up by a couple in a white van, who became angry with Ricky and threw him out of the car. Ricky did not have his wheelchair and was stranded in the middle of nowhere with no food, water, and no way of communication. Gilmore dragged himself with his upper body for two miles. In his struggles he encountered two people, both who only honked and kept driving. Finally, with a broken wrist and kidneys in bad shape due to lack of water and food, Ricky was found on day 3. He is now a patient at the hospital, and is waiting to recover.
I think that this incident is very startling. It is scary that the people driving him would just throw out a handicapped person in the middle of the desert like that. Hopefully it taught the victim a lesson about hitchhiking and its dangers. One other startling part of this story was that Ricky actually saw two people, but either even knew he was in trouble. It is a miracle he survived. This would be surprising if a healthy person survived in the desert for 3 days without food or water, so it is amazing that someone who is handicapped can survive for that long.Ricky was very lucky, but is also very strong for never giving up.

    1. It's so sad that someone would throw him out. I do wonder, why did he not have his wheelchair, and what could he have possibly done for them to get angry enough to throw a handicapped man out their car. Abandoning him in the desert was extremely cruel, they could have at least made sure that he could get another ride, or driven him to a safer place.

    2. Wow, it's horrible that Ricky was thrown out of a car- why would somebody do that? Wouldn't they feel any remorse for leaving a handicapped man in the middle of the desert? Even the people who drove past him and honked were being cruel and disrespectful. They could have saved him from a lot of health issues. Ricky is very brave, and I hope he is recovering in the hospital.

I don't understand why someone would throw him out of their car, especially being handicapped. Article: Habitat park or ‘animal concentration camp’?
Author: By Ivan Watson and Gul Tuysuz
    Source: CNN
Date of Article: October 20, 2012
    URL: www.cnn.com/2012/10/19/world/europe/turkey-animal-rights-fight/index.html?npt=NP1

In Turkey in the year 1910, thousands of stray dogs were rounded up and shipped to a deserted on an island in the Marmara Sea without food or water. Residents of that time reported the howling of the dogs as they starved on the island. Today, the citizens still remember that day known as the “Great Dog Massacre of 1910”. Now, the government of Turkey has started to design "natural habitat parks" for stray cats and dogs in Turkey's urban areas. Others view these parks as concentration camps for the animals. There have been many marches against theses parks by citizens and their pets throughout Turkey. Animals have been in Turkey’s culture for many years. All over Turkey, stray animals keep people company as they go throughout their day. These animals are well cared for by the residents. Some even adopt many of these strays.

As I was reading this article, I was shocked to learn that thousands of stray dogs were starved to death just because the government didn’t want them on the street any more. Who could be that cruel, even to strays? When I first learned about the animal parks however, I was confused as to why the Turkish citizens were describing them as concentration camps. In the article, the Turkish Forestry and Water Works Ministry explained that the parks would be safe, temporary homes for the strays until they are adopted. But then I realized that the animals have been the people’s companions for centuries, and they don’t want to see them be taken away. A woman from the video that went along with the article said “It is our culture. That is what we have seen, and what we have lived with. We have been living with them (the animals) for centuries.” I have always loved animals, and I have many times rescued stray cats and brought them into my home as well as a stray dog. I am very glad that the animals are well cared for in Turkey. One question that readers should think about is would these parks help adopt many of these stray animals, or would they only make things worse?

I replied to Sam Bauers post about the girl that was mistaken for a skunk and then shot.

I see no point in these animal parks. If animals are keeping people company as they are now and are not causing trouble, I do not see any problem with them. A logical place to put stray animals is the pound so they can possibly be adopted and are provided food and water. Plus, why would animals be rounded up to be put in an enclosed area when they can be rounded up and then taken to a pound, which is the more common place? The parks would also become very unsanitary if animals stayed there all the time. Their feces and scraps would litter the area, and possibly their carcasses. People would have to be employed to keep the area clean.

I disagree with the idea of these animal parks. The culture of Turkey accepts stray animals as a part of daily life. I could think of nothing more enjoyable than walking down the street and having a dog come up and keep you company. Why would you get rid of animals that aren't causing a problem? I wonder how they would enforce the parks. I pictured chain link fences, and that really does sound like a concentration camp. Animals are smart, smarter than we give them credit for, and likley scenario is they all escape and the government is left scratching their heads while things go back to normal.

    1) According to the article, Hong Kong is seen as a transit point for the illegal ivory trade. Hong Kong ascendances took $3.4 million cost of ivory found in two shipping containers. This weighed more than 8,000 tons of illegal goods, because of this is making one of the biggest breakdown on ivory. This first took place in Tanzania and Kenya. The agency taked 1,209 pieces of ivory tusks and three pounds of ivory ornaments from the two containers. This is increasing the demands in China. They have arrested seven people one of the them was a resident of Hong Kong due to this case. In this case they have killed and still killing animals such as the elephants in Africa for the ivory. The countries that come mostly on demand is China, and Thailand.

    2) I think that they should first stop killing elephants for ivory tusks. Why kill animals like the elephants for their ivory tusks and trade it for money. I think the seven people that had to deal with this care should pay what they have done. The authorities need to do something about this, even they have seized a ship of ivory and rhino horns. If do not stop this then animals will drop the population and cause extinction.

One week ago, a 17-year-old with the name of Austin Reed Sigg murdered a 10-year-old girl called Jessica Ridgeway. Austin was faced with preliminary charges including first-degree murder and kidnapping. Charges will be officially filed in a couple of days. Jessica was last seen by her mom when she left for school on October 5th. Her body was found last week at a park in Arvada, a Denver suburb in Colorado. Late Tuesday evening, the police were directed to a house where they arrested Austin. The suspect will have his first court appearance on Thursday at 8 a.m. This article is important to the study of world history because it shows how murder is taken to a place totally different than here in North Carolina, across the country.

I think that it was very sad to hear about the murder of Jessica. With the facts and the knowledge that I have, I believe that she definitely did not deserve to have such a thing happen to her. With past cases like this, I’ve heard that they usually happened because the suspect had had family problems at home that stirred up anger inside of them to do such a thing like hurting another human being. What I wonder is why Jessica was murdered? Did she do something bad? How is her family doing right now?

“Among American’s in Israel, More Forceful Backing for Romney”- Isabel Kershiner

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/24/world/middleeast/americans-in-israel-seem-to-back-romney.html

Though much of the hype for the 2012 Presidential elections has been focused on the United States, there is a number of American voters that are voting from abroad, namely, from Israel. Unlike previous years however, more voters from Israel seem to be supporting Romney. Several people that were interviewed claimed that they had voted Republican because they disapproved of how the Obama administration’s actions negatively affected Israel. The current tension between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and President Obama of the United States is a strong motivator for the more than 75 thousand American-Israeli voters that registered to vote from Israel this year.

I think that these people, some of whom said they voted Democratic while living in the United States, have seen more effects of our government’s actions. Living in another country, especially one with such unsteady and bad relations with the United States, has obviously changed their thoughts towards their choice of administration. Looking from afar, maybe they do not like what Obama has done with the country, or maybe they think Romney’s plans would benefit other countries more. Either way, these people, though not significantly impacting the election results, are letting the world know what they think, standing in another country looking at the United States.

Group Seek Red Wolf Protection From Coyote Hunt - Emery P. Dalesio

    http://www.sfgate.com/news/science/article/Groups-seek-red-wolf-protection-from-coyote-hunt-3978176.php

1.) Last month, a “coyote” was shot dead, but actually turned out to be a red wolf. Red wolves are a rare and endangered species that northeastern North Carolina, is trying to breed back into a reasonable population. As of now, wildlife protectors and supporters are asking for the recent statewide hunting rule that had taken effect in august, to be blocked. A hearing will be taken place sometime next week. For the most part, a reasonable compromise that benefits and protects the red wolves. This relates to world history because it will become a somewhat significant event within our history.

2.) I think the recent hunting rule should be blocked, or a compromise should be made. Both sound reasonable to me. The coyote situation is a bit of a problem, but it’s a bigger problem to be “accidentally” killing endangered animals, such as the red wolf. I believe that the jury will also consider this and offer a solution that’ll benefit both sides and reduces red wolf deaths. What do you think is “right”? What would your plan be if you could make the decision?

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/24/us/politics/a-tight-focus-on-battleground-states-as-campaigning-time-dwindles.html?ref=us&_r=0

Entering the two week stretch before the elections, President Obama and Governor Mitt Romney have both begun a campaign ad blitz. Both candidates have released new ads attacking the other and presenting themselves as the right choice. President Obama has tried to show voters that he actually has an agenda for his second term if elected. Romney on the other hand has to continue presenting himself as more responsible and countering the image that the White House has painted over the summer: that of an out-of-touch, job-killing plutocrat. Both candidates have scheduled campaign stops in swing states such as Ohio, Iowa, Colorado, Nevada, Florida and Virginia. President Obama is scheduled to campaign in all those states while Mitt Romney makes back to back appearances in Ohio and Iowa. This is important to history because this election will decide the next leader of the United States.

I think that there have been an excessive amount of ads this during the 2012 campaign. Both candidates have their share of ads where they attack the candidate. I think the ads should be less negative and concentrate more on what each will do if elected and how he would do it. I think that we are living in tough times and whoever wins the election will be remembered for a long time because so much attention has been brought about by this election.

Title: NC readies ban on students bullying of teachers
    Author: Michael Winter
    Source: USA TODAY

    Link: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/ondeadline/2012/10/23/north-carolina-bans-students-cyberbullying-teachers/1653111/

    2) This article talks about how kids lately have been bullying each other, and teachers even. This is mainly happening online (ex: their making fake sights for their teachers, writing mean things about them online, etc.). North Carolina has finally decided to put an end to this. They are enforcing a law called the “school violence prevention act of 2012” which prohibits students or anyone else saying mean things on the internet about fellow students or teachers, even if its true. Those kids can be fined up to $1,000 or even go to jail for 60 or more days.

    3) I think that this article is informative, and well written, but that being said I don’t agree with the new law being enforced. There is a reason that America has “freedom of speech”. We should stay true to that. I completely disagree with bullying of any sort to anyone, no matter who they are. Maybe we should focus on developing programs, instead of making a law. I have had no personal experience with true bullying, or other kids bullying teachers. I do know it is a huge problem in America today, but they should find more alternatives. I guess if I were to relate this to class, I would say the bullies are kind of like Rome, constantly picking a fight. How long do you think this law will last? Do you think there will be protests?

Bullying is definitely a problem in the USA. I liked hearing Claire's point of view on the upcoming law in North Carolina. I agree with her that although what some of these people are saying is wrong, it contradicts freedom of speech. Therefore, the law should not be enforced. Instead, people need to teach children from a young age that bullying is wrong.

    2. I think that the new law is very blatently breaking the first amendment. As it is students have very few right in NC and this would restrict them out side of school. I think this is taking Tinker to an extreme that violates the first amendment.

"Italian scientists resign over L'Aquila Quake Verdicts"-Jethro Mullen 10/23

An earthquake hit the L'Aquila region of Italy in 2009, killing 3,000 people. Recently, a group of seismologists were, in fact, arrested for trial in relation to the incident. Just yesterday, they were convicted to six years in jail for manslaughter, for apparently misrepresenting the danger that the earthquake would cause. The scientific community is in uproar over the decision, with prominent Italians resigning from their posts. The scientists did in fact state that evacuation would not be a good course of action, but they were merely working off of uncertain predictions. Their verdict has shocked everyone.

In my opinion, the decision of the Italian court is unjust. Convicting scientists as the cause for deaths, especially when they are working in an uncertain field such as seismology, is unfair. Not all major earthquakes can be accurately predicted from the constant, small-scale ones that occur. If they were, you could always find someone to blame, when the real culprit is nature. Obviously, you can't take that to trial.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that you are right. The scientists are not to blame, it is nature. I also think that if other seismologists are resining because of this, they know something that everyone else doesn't. Maybe the scientists were not aware of how large the earthquake would be.

      Delete
    2. I think it is bad that the scientists were blamed for this "crime", although it was nature's fault. Thinking about it is just astounding, because you would never think that an adult would say something like this. Science is never precise, and a lot of it is guesswork so they shouldn't be blamed.

      Delete
    3. I agree with you as well. Several days ago, I read an article (not the one they I will blog about) that said that accurate predictions of the severity of some earthquakes can only be made 60-90 seconds before they occur. By that time, it is too late. It's not their fault that their equipment did not warn them in time, and they shouldn't be sent to prison. I don't think "manslaughter" is the right way to charge them; the people were killed by a force of nature, not by the scientists.

      Delete
    4. I completely agree that there is no way that the scientists should be blamed for these. In fact, I was incredibly surprised when I read that they had been blamed for a natural disaster. This is in no way the fault of scientists who work, and yet work in a field that is incredibly difficult to predict. I also agree that this would never hold up on trial.

On a Monday night, a nine year old girl attended a costume party. She was wearing full black and had a black hat. She went to a hill and her relative spotted a black figure in the distance and mistaked her for a skunk and shot her with a shotgun in the neck, back, and arm. The relative was not drunk and they had to fly the girl to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, which was about 30 miles away. The police don’t know whether they will charge the unknown relative yet and haven’t said how the man is related to the girl.

I was wondering how the innocent girl didn’t die. Most people die when they get shot in the neck with a shotgun. I was also wondering how someone who isn’t drunk can mistake a girl for a skunk. Why did the relative bring a gun to a costume party and why did he even shoot the skunk? The police said they don’t know what there going to charge him but I hope they take him to jail because he could have killed her easily. I hope the poor girl will survive and will never have to face another situation like this.

Surfer Dies After Shark Attack Of California Airforce Base
Tuesday, a man named Francisco Javier Soloriowas surfing off the coast of a California airforce base with a few friends. He was not affiliated with the airforce. The beach is known as Surf Beach. One of Solorio’s friends witnissed a terrifying shark attack on Solorio. The friend helped Solorio reach land after the attack. First aid was applied while another friend called for help.Help arrived, but it was too late. Solorio would be declared dead by paramedics. This current event is important because it shows the importance of safety to the society.

It concerns me that a beach known to have dangerous sharks does not have a lifeguard. If there was a lifeguard at the scene from the beginning, Solorio would have had immediate access to professional care. The importance of citizens’ safety should be valued higher than it is currently. People in the United States of America need to start paying attention to their surroundings, and be cautious when an area seems unsafe.

On Wednesday in Pakistan the police identified a 23-year-old man from the Swat district where Malala was attacked. Its not sure if he was at the scene and tried to shoot her or if he was the leader in making the plan to kill her. Also six men were arrested accused of being part of the attack. Malala is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Birmingham, England for her gunshot wound in her head.

I am very happy to hear that they found the men who did this to Malala. After reading the first article about her I felt bad for her and her family. This article is about the upcoming presidential election in November. Currently, the race for the next president is very close. Many key states now have Mitt Romney closing the gap and even some key democrat supporters are saying there seems to be a shift of momentum for candidate Romney. Having an approval rating of just under 50% as the current president is not favorable. One of the big issues for voters is the economy. That issue alone might help tip the vote one way or the other. Additionally, Obama campaign supporters feel that small demographic shifts might work in their favor. This article is significant to the study of World History because it is about who is going to lead the United States, a key force in the world.

I feel this article was well written and represented opinions from both candidates’ views. I agree that the Obama campaign model has an effective neighborhood campaign which certainly benefits that candidate. The article mentions statistics and polls to support their opinions, and even describes how the polls can help identify their voter base. I agree with the author that it is going to be a close race and will boil down to which party gets voters to the polls for their candidate. We have been studying kings and pharaohs in ancient civilization, but not current world leaders. I wonder what is on most voters’ minds, the press seems to tell us what they think are on voter’s minds. I wonder if there is an age group that will throw their support in one direction more than the other. What will be the difference and the deciding factors in the end when we look back and analyze this election?

    By : Ryan Jaslow

Recently a multi-state outbreak of meningitis took the lives of 24 people. After an injection steroid was shipped to 23 states in the US, people started getting sick from what we now know was fungal meningitis. The vials containing the steroids were contaminated with exserohilum which caused people to become sick with fungal meningitis. This shipment was from the New England Compounding Center was given to about 14,000 patients. According to the CDC the people who were treated with the steroids were called back to get a follow up so that they could track and control the outbreak. I thought this was relative to world history because it shows how our community reacted to the outbreak. Many plagues in the past were not this easily controlled, resulting in spread of disease and many deaths.
Since the outbreak resulted in 24 deaths so far I feel like it was a big mistake on the company’s side. They should have realized their products were contaminated and stopped the shipping. Although they did recall the products it was not quick enough, people were getting sick and dying from a medication that was supposed to make them better. Since one of the states that they shipped the medication to was North Carolina I was concerned about the health of our community. Even though this form of meningitis is not contagious some people were still contaminated by the sick patients. What if someone in our community was impacted by the recall drugs? This article did not relate much to what we were learning but it did compare the difference between how outbreaks were handled in the past and now.

Great White Shark Killed California Surfer, Officials say by the CNN Wire Staff

In this article they described how a 39 year old surfer was bitten by a shark in the torso, and was declared dead at the scene. He was with three friends who were also surfing with him. Then they tell us that in 2010 a similar shark attack happened. But to a 19 year old who was boogie boarding. Both of these attacks are believed to be by the same shark.
If both of these shark attacks happened on the same beach with, they think, the same shark then why would you keep the beach open? If two people have been bitten by a shark on that beach you would think they would try and contain or kill the shark before they let people in the water. If they keep this beach open they are just asking for another attack. According to the article this beach is one of the three that lie on a military coastal base, but this beach is the only one of those three that is open to the public. If they were to keep all three closed then maybe they would not have this problem.

I totally agree with you, if there is a crazy shark on the loose biting people in half it needs to tracked down! Or at least be isolated from the public to prevent more people from falling prey to it's vicious torso biting tendencies. Maybe if the people of California were more focused on keeping people safe then issues such as whether or not yoga should be taught in public schools (http://news.yahoo.com/yoga-public-schools-latest-test-free-speech-154236769--politics.html) then maybe a situation like this would have never occurred.

The Coliseum, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Rome, has recently been surrounded by police officers. Tourists have been bringing snacks while at the Coliseum, and the mayor believes it is offensive and is a crime. Visitors may receive a fine of up to about six hundred dollars just for eating on the steps of the Coliseum. And not only is it this specific landmark, but all of the famous monuments in Rome have enforced the law as well. Many believe it is disrespectful to eat at such a legendary monument, while others find no problem with it. Littering is also a major issue at the Coliseum, and the mayor decided banning food would help lessen the amount of wrappers and litter on the ground.

Although I believe in respecting national landmarks, I found this law slightly harsh. I don’t think people should be throwing trash and food all over the Coliseum, but just eating a snack doesn’t cause any harm. I hope the tourists at least get a warning before being fined. If I were the mayor, I would be more lenient on the situation and make the law more permissive towards the tourists. Outlawing littering makes much more sense, and I believe $650 is way too much to charge an innocent individual just trying to enjoy their vacation.

    1. I totally agree with your opinion on this. Yes, it's a bad thing that people are littering, but just because they're doing it at a historical landmark doesn't make it any worse than any other place. Also, I probably would not feel inclined to eat while there, due to the number of people killed and gutted in the arena.

Could Obama's struggles with white voters cost him the election?

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/25/politics/obama-40-percent/index.html?hpt=hp_c1

Many people of America are worried that President Obama might be a one term politician. As of today, only 40% of white people say they are going to vote for Obama, the minimum percent for him to win the election. But, experts are saying that it might not be just Obama that’s losing the white voters. The trend over the last decade has been that Democrats are slowly losing the white voters. There has also been a subtle form of racism going on in the election. Many say that whites are using the economy as a way to get out of voting for Obama. But, in order to win the election, Obama must hold on to the minority voters, and get more whites on board for his presidential plan. This is significant to World History because each president of the United States has the power to make history. Whether it’s for the change it for the good or the bad, they have the power to change it, which is why it’s important to vote for the right candidate.

I think it’s awful that people are possibly not voting for Obama just because of his race. Also, if this becomes a trend for future elections, it will be a real problem because it is biased and will influence who is in office. In my opinion, Americans should vote for a president based on what they will do in office, and the ideas and beliefs they have. I really hope Obama shows white voters that he can be a good president, even if he is black, because he was perfectly able to do it last term.

Sigg strangled her and dismembered her, placing her body parts in the park 5 miles away and under his house. Many girls in the area weren’t surprised; Sigg was known to give girls uncomfortable stares that would stick with them for days. Sigg’s parents are divorced and his father has been arrested many times. Sigg will be tried as an adult and also be accused for assault of 22 year old.
It scares me to know that Sigg was not even an adult and had already killed a little girl and assaulted a 22 year old. People had their suspicions and still didn’t say anything. This just shows how dangerous it is to be oblivious. It also shows what home life can do to someone. His father had been arrested many times before and his parents were separated, it must have been hard growing up. Sigg was disturbed enough to murder and dismember an elementary schooler. The fact that this happened on Jessica’s way to school deeply concerns me. I and many others walk to the bus stop every morning, what if this were to happen to a friend or even yourself?

Food and Drug Administration has seen the caffeine increase over the years, but has always let it pass. Now, critics are wondering when the Food and Drug Administration will take action and put a limit on how much caffeine an energy drink can contain. 5 deaths in the past 3 years have been caused by a very popular energy drink "Monster Energy". Over 12,000 people visit the hospital every year because of caffeine overdose.

"Citing privacy concerns, U.S. panel urges end to secret DNA testing" by Sharon Begley
    Source: news.yahoo.com
    Date: Oct. 11th, 2012
    http://news.yahoo.com/citing-privacy-concerns-u-panel-urges-end-secret-041322304.html

Discrete DNA testing, like taking someone's old gum or used paper cup and sending it to a company to be analyzed, is on its way to being banned. This is due to the potential for DNA to be used as evidence in court to prove that someone has a higher risk of becoming an alcoholic or being abusive, or as a reason to increase someone's health insurance cost because they have a gene that puts them at a higher risk for Alzheimer's. The potential for abuse of someone's genetic information is enormous, and it is now very easy to get a hold of such personal information. Certain laboratories will analyze DNA for just a few hundred dollars, and the person who's DNA is being tested may not even know about it. It has now been proposed that all genetic testing must be acknowledged and approved by the subject with written authorization. This is an important subject because now we have advanced technology that lets us humans peer inside to our very roots. It truly is the computer age because our supercomputers allow us to map out someone's entire genetic sequence.
I find testing someone's DNA without their knowledge and/or consent very dangerous. I cannot imagine the horrible things that someone could do to you if they got your DNA, like plant it at the scene of a crime or use it as evidence to support their claim in court (even though genetic testing may not completely support their ideas). In and of itself, I think that genetic mapping and study is a important emerging field because of its great potential to help us find cures for various diseases. But like anything good, it has a bad side. Certain people may find DNA testing inhumane for a number of reasons, and others may see it as only another way of personal gain (stealing). I certainly agree that genetic codes need to be regulated because they can be used for so much evil and they are so personal. (Question: What are your opinions on the availability of genetic testing?)

    1. My opinion upon genetic testing is that I do not support this action, and the permission to test one's DNA should be given by the owner of the DNA, under specific guidelines. By giving someone else their DNA freely, especially rare or valuable ones; I think the profits gained and privacy stolen are too great of a risk by others to be distributed, no matter how rare or common this action is performed. If this does happen, the biological problem becomes a legal problem; complicating the situation that should have been easily prevented.

    2. My opinion is that it's understandable that people may want to get your DNA for evidence in court and such, but I don't think that is right. I think it's unfair to secretly take someones DNA without their permission. I think it's a good idea for scientists to find cures, but having a legal right to use someone's DNA is very important. This is way too personal and if your DNA is taken who knows how many other people will see it.

" Amazon Reports First Quarterly Loss in 4 Years" by David Streitfield

Amazon has just reported its first quarterly loss in several years. They haven't made much money recently because they are so focused on expanding, but if they don't bring in enough revenue the company may fail. If they don't have enough money, they will go out of business no matter how big they are.

It worries me because Amazon is already a huge, far-reaching company. You can buy music, books, clothing, electronics, tools, beauty products, toys, and more from them. That means that they are affiliated with hundreds of other companies. If Amazon fails, they will impact many other people. It reminds me of how at the beginning of the recession some companies were called "too big to fail" because if they did they would completely wreck the economy. I don't think Amazon is quite that big, but I hope they are able to stay in business.
What other companies might have a simile impact on the economy, and what do you think of that type of situation?

    Author: Associated Press Reporter
    Date: October 23, 2012
I read an article about a man named Ricky Gilmore, who is a paraplegic, who was stranded by a couple in the New Mexico desert for three days. His story began with him hitch hiking and getting picked up by a couple in a white van. After Ricky refused to share alcohol with the two, the man grabbed Ricky by his feet and threw him out the car door to the dessert. He was then left there with no food, water, or his wheelchair. He began a four mile walk to try to find someone to help. He said that two cars had passed him in the deserts but failed to stop and help him. Being paraplegic, he was forced to use his fists to walk. By the end of his travel, he had a spraned wrist, kidney problems, and completely torn jeans. He is now at the Northern Navajo Medical Center in Mexico getting help to recover.
In my opinion, this story is rather scary. It's incredible how horrible some people can be. The fact that the couple in the white van dropped him off in the desert without food or water is enough, but add that he is paraplegic shocks me that someone would do that. Its an amazing story that someone with these disabilities was able to survive for three whole days in the middle of no where. Hopefully, he's recovering and the couple has either been identified or punished for their actions.

    1. I think it is terrible what the couple did to this man. It is even more tragic because he is a paraplegic. What did they expect to happen to him? He was very lucky to have survived that in a hot desert and having to basically drag himself for 4 miles without any water.

    2. This story was really tragic and i feel very badly for that poor man. The couple that left him are straight up indecent human beings and should be punished for this act of cruelty. I am amazing and relieved that the man survied under such harsh conditions.

    URL: http://lightbox.time.com/2012/10/25/a-vibrant-past-colorizing-the-archives-of-history/?hpt=hp_c2#1

Summary: TIME asked Sanna Dullaway, a 22 year-old Sweden, to create a more vibrant document of Lincoln through a series of colorized photographs produced in Photoshop. These photos were based on prior pictures of Lincoln, our 16th president and maybe the most famous one. She is making these pictures so we have more than just the black and white photos that only show his face. She began in January, and has been working for almost a year. Now, she is planning to make currently dull pictures of the Civil War more colorful and exciting. This article is relevant to world history because it is bringing significant people and events ‘back to life’. They now are more interesting, and we can imagine what our 16th president actually looked like.

My Opinion: Overall, I think it is very cool what is happening. Especially for our younger generation, it will make history a lot more interesting for them. When I was young, anything that looked dull was something I never wanted to look at, much less learn about it. Just think, soon there could even be accurate videos of President Lincoln. I was surprised to see that many people were angry with this. I would understand if it was a total bizarre picture that displayed something that wasn’t true, but the pictures Sanna Dullaway was creating looked good to me. This article cannot be related to what we have been doing in school, but maybe they will one day have pictures of the battles or people we are studying now. The one thing I am concerned about is whether or not this will get out of control and we will start to have fake picture. Do you think this will happen? Or do you think this is an entirely good thing?

Charges filed in Pa. Halloween costume shooting (Associated Press)

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2012/10/25/charges-filed-against-man-who-shot-girl-mistaken-for-skunk/1658797/

As people of all ages prepare for Halloween, many are searching for the perfect costume. One Pennsylvanian eight-year-old girl was doing just that on Saturday, October 20th, and was wearing a black body with a black hat and a feather on top. She was at her 24-year-old cousin’s, Thomas Edward Grant, home, and decided to play hide-and-go-seek with him. As he searched, Thomas saw her and thought she was a skunk. She was shot once with a 12-gauge shotgun, causing damage to her shoulder, arm, back, and neck. She is in critical condition, and her cousin is being charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and simple assault. This article is important to World History, because it pertains to law, and what should be considered a crime. Some people might argue it was a simple mistake, but due to the way America’s law system has been shaped by different civilization’s law systems, Thomas Edward Grant is being charged.

I, as an avid trick-or-treater, have had probably three costumes at most, in which people could immediately tell what I was. But I still find it ridiculous that the man couldn’t tell it was a human child and not a giant skunk. Most logical human beings would at least attempt to check, at the risk of smelling bad and taking a tomato bath. I think it is certainly reasonable to charge him for this. Also, who knows? This could be his alibi for shooting her on purpose. Some people are messed up, and find it totally acceptable to shoot children. This relates to our discussion of Greek and Roman law and order. It pertains to the phrase, “innocent until proven guilty.” Grant may secretly have shot his little cousin on purpose, but he isn’t proven guilty of it yet.

This is awful. If you think about it, Thomas Grant had to go back to the house to retrieve his shotgun first, because I'm going to assume that he doesn't play hide-and-go-seek while carrying a shotgun. This means he left his eight-year-old cousin out in the woods all alone by herself. Sarah I agree with what you said about going to check it out before just randomly shooting at something. Thomas Grant may not have been thinking straight though, because for all we know he could have been drinking earlier. Overall though, I think Thomas Grant deserves some sort of punishment for this.

Barack Obama casts vote early in Chicago

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-20085355

Barack Obama has officially voted in the 2012 election. He is the first U.S. president to do so. The Obama campaign has been encouraging voters to vote early, and Michelle and Barack have each already done so. The logic behind this push for early voting is quite understandable: if anything were to come up on Election Day, you would have already voted. Obama himself stated that it was important to make sure your vote got cast, and he reminded people that by early voting, they would not have to worry about missing work or other conflicts. I felt that this was important to world history because elections are a big part of our country, and many other countries around the world. It is also interesting to see how elections and democracy have developed over time.

I know that many people enjoy the excitement of voting on Election Day, and I completely understand that feeling. However, I have canvassed several times between the last election and this upcoming election, and this year the Obama campaign is especially adamant about early voting. While we are canvassing, we are instructed to encourage voters to vote early and the main information we discuss and give out is early voting information. For some people who were not previously aware of this opportunity, it makes it much more convenient for them to vote. In addition, this is very important for voters who are not registered. Unregistered voters can’t vote on November 6th, so it’s important for them to partake in early voting. In class, we are learning about various types of government in different societies, so this does relate to our lessons in certain ways. One question that came up for me was how this will affect the election. Many people are saying that huge numbers of people have been showing up for early voting, and I’m interested to see how this will affect the results on November 6th.

“Memorial to Roma Holocaust Victims Opens in Berlin” by Chris Cottrell

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/25/world/europe/memorial-to-romany-victims-of-holocaust-opens-in-berlin.html?ref=europe&_r=0

    1. On October 23rd a tribute was held in Berlin, Germany in memorial of the Roma and Sinti killed during the Holocaust. The memorial called “Memorial for the Sinti and Roma of Europe Murdered in National Socialism” had been planned to be built since 1992 but took quite a long time due to disagreements on the memorial's structure as well as name. The memorial is significant to the Roma and Sinti people (sometimes referred to as “Gypsies”) due to the fact that Germany only acknowledged their suffering during the Holocaust in 1982. This is connected to world history in how it relates to the Holocaust, the horrible massacre of millions during Adolf Hitler's rule in Germany during World War II.
    2. In my opinion something like this should have happened years before now. It's been around 70 years since the Holocaust and the lack of an official monument dedicated to the Romany and Sinti peoples until now seems somewhat absurd. It also annoys me that though they had though about it in 1992, they ended up postponing it due to petty disagreements on the name and the structure. I do agree that the structure of something this big is important, I don't think that it should have been delayed 20 years because of it. In general though, I think this is a really important event that at least represents some sort of recognition for the horrors faced by the Romany people during the Holocaust.

    2) Paragraph #1:
-Your summary of your selected article (minimum of 5-7 sentences that provide details about who/what, when, where, and why your current event is significant to the study of World History)

This article is about a little known historical figure named Mansa Musa who ruled the empire of Mali which covered Ghana, Ivory Coast and other parts of West Africa. He lived from 1280 to 1337 and was the richest person of all time. This is significant to history because the richest people are usually the most powerful and influential. Mansa Musa was so rich that in today's terms he would have more than $400 billion. His money was made from mining gold and salt in Africa. In addition to the story of Musa, the article lists the richest people of all time through history and how they made their fortunes.

As I look over this list of the wealthiest people of all time, I notice that no women are on the list. I also notice that they are mostly dictators, conquerors. or monopolists. It looks like the common sources of their wealth include owning lots of land, being in banking, being an investor, or being an entrepreneur. We have been studying ancient empires and Mansa Musa, owned one of the largest empires. Both Rome and Egypt had great wealth and participated in trade of salt and gold.

Is it a good idea for one person to have so much money? What would you do if you had $400 billion?

Can Romney “get” Women to Work? - By Kathleen Dolan and Jennifer L. Lawless
    CNN, Saturday October 21 2012
    http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/19/opinion/dolan-lawless-women-romney/index.html?hpt=us_mid
This article has a lot of things to do with the rights of women, and if in your opinion they are treated different than men. Romney asked his staff a question of why all of the applicants for cabinet positions were only male applicants. This led to a whole issue of why people think only men can handle some jobs over women? Or possibly the other way around. Romney later made a comment of his “Binder Full Of Women.” What he meant was that when he asked people why no females had applied, he then received a binder full of women applicants for the job.
While this subject doesn't have very much to do with what we are studying in class other than roughly women’s rights, many people(including I), have a strong opinion about the subject. I think Romney had the best intentions when he said asked them why there are no women. He just wanted to know what their opinion on it was and why it was happening. What would your answer have been? I agree with him on this point that there is no reason for men to think higher of themselves than women in a certain category.

This New York Times article is about the on-going civil war in Syria, which started more than a year ago. The article describes from the government’s soldiers perspective, the situations involved with urban fighting. In the city of Homs, one of the largest cities in Syria and where lots of the fighting has occurred, the author describes how the soldiers must move from building to building through improvised “mouse-holes” in order to avoid snipers. Working through a correspondent from Paris, the author describes the current state of the war, as told by the soldiers, and the tolls the street fighting has taken on Homs. The Syrian civil war is an important current event because it is part of the series of changes that has started all throughout Middle Eastern countries around two years ago.
I think that the article was well written, however it lacks the view of the Rebels’ side, which prevents it from provided a detailed perspective of the whole issue. I found it very useful watching the video linked at the side of the article, which provided a background on the issue which the article did not do very thoroughly. This is similar to what we’ve learned in class because Syria is located very close to some of the river-valley civilizations that we studied, i.e. Egypt, Mesopotamia, etc. I wonder if other nations will intervene with this civil war like the U.N. has done with the Libyan conflict.

In Maury County, Tennessee a man was rescued after being pinned under his pickup truck for 10 hours. Adam Moore fell asleep at the wheel of his truck, hit a dry creek, flipped his car, and was thrown out of his truck. At 10 A.M. Sunday morning a passerby heard him screaming for help. Matthew Hill was the passerby whose fiancé called 911. Rescue workers were able to free Moore and transport him to the hospital. Moore did not suffer any broken bones, but is on dialysis for his kidney and he has some damaged muscles. Hill later realized that he and Moore were childhood friends who hadn’t seen each other in 20 years.
I can’t believe that this man was able to survive for 10 long hours with a truck on top of him. I can’t imagine being under a truck for a couple seconds much less to hours. I also am amazed that they didn’t suffer any broken bones. Finally I find it very interesting that the man who found him turned out to be an old friend.

Single mom challenges dismissal from Air Force; Kathleen Johnston and Kyung Lah

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/24/us/us-air-force-mom/index.html?npt=NP1

Rebecca Edmonds, a practicing Catholic, grew up in a military family and just like her father she planned to join the military after high school. Then when the Air Force offered her a full scholarship to Marquette University, she enrolled in 2007 and took the opportunity to become a nurse and help serve her country. Shortly after her college graduation, Edmonds was commissioned as second lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Now in 2012, just weeks before being commissioned as a military officer, she has been rejected or dis-enrolled from the Air Force, due to the fact that she is pregnant. The Air Force forbids single parents from enlisting, because the demands of deployment and military service put strain on family life and even more so for single parents. Based on this rule, the Air Force policy is encourages pregnant single women to abort their pregnancies, which Edmonds would never do based on her Catholic faith. Right now Edmonds case is under review, where she has been accused by the Air Force of having committed a fraud by not reporting a change in her medical condition, as indicated in the contract. This relates to world history, because this could eventually become part of world-wide movement to fight for more equal rights for women as well as a possible passing of a new set of laws.

I don't agree at all with how the Air Force decided to react with this situation. I feel like they were too harsh on Edmonds and that they didn't give her a chance to explain her situation. What I do understand though is that she could have told the Air Force that she was pregnant, instead of hoping that they wouldn't do anything about it. If she had let them know, they could have put off her commissioning and deployment until after she had given birth and recovered. By then she could have set up a way for her baby to be cared for while she worked. This would have been a much better approach. Another thing that I am fully against that the Air Force is supporting, is the abortion of a baby just so that woman may retain her position in the military. I believe a woman has the right to choose what they do in life and shouldn't have specific laws hindering them.

This creates a very large presence of the afican-brazilians which creates a very different culture.

Currently, President Obama and Romney are continuing to fight against the election weather or not who should be president? Well so far the both the democratic and republican parties are dealing with some issues regarding to weather or not who wins the election. The main problem they say there facing right now is race and how it’s affecting the both sides or the party. The democratic side needs at least 40% of whites in order to be re-elected or he can also get re-elected if he gets more than 80% of minorities to win, but the whites doesn’t want Obama in office. As for Romney and the republic party, they need more minorities’ votes in order to win the election. Romney says he lives and a son of Detroit, but he only went their one time and that one was in the sudbirds, but not in Detroit which is an African American state.

After reading and watching the clip it shows and tells me about this presidential election were having so far. This is amazingly crazy; I mean both parties are not doing what I thought was going too happened. We have in absolute (mouth-fight) between the two parties. I have both things to say to both sides of the party. Romney, you call yourself a son and a man that lived in Detroit, but when was the last time you visited your homeland as of late? I know you been there one time, but that was in the sudbirds. Yet you haven’t actually go to the main Detroit which is mostly African American. As for Obama side, I know your having a problem with the Americans regarding to your election, but you going to have to do something if you want to remain president of the United States.
Honestly, for this election I’m leaning towards the Obama and the democratic side. But this war the two are putting on each other has no reasons of doing. I wonder who will win it all????

“Flowing Water on Mars May Cause Seasonal Streaks: Study” by SPACE.com staff
    Yahoo News, 10/24/2012
    http://news.yahoo.com/flowing-water-mars-may-cause-seasonal-streaks-study-161622217.html

Erosion shown on Mars from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft is recognized as liquid water by Brown University scientists Chevrier and Edgard Rivera-Valentin in October; in the hopes of finding life on Mars. Believing that the water was brine, the two scientists formed models of the possible liquid water on the frigid environment of Mars. Adding different salt compounds to water, they reached a desired model by adding calcium chloride to the water. Modeling the climate on Mars, they tested the solution for the speed of evaporation in the cold, dry atmosphere. Pleased with their discovery, other scientists predict even further for possible life on Mars. The belief of life outside of Earth started long ago. Following ancient beliefs of life in other parts of space, or the belief of beings as the stars and planets themselves, shown in mythologies of the Polynesians and the Greeks, or the Lady and Jade Hare on the moon, specified in the ancient Chinese Moon Festival stories; the hunt for extraterrestrial life truly began in the late 1950’s, due to the advancement in technology. This article explains very well the extensive research scientists have undertaken in the past century. Developing the Drake Equation to determine the amount of life in the universe, formation of astrobiology; a new field of science, and missions towards discovering suspected life forms in the universe with Mars as a main focus point; the people of the current and past century are based upon humanity’s belief of life, elsewhere.
The universe is huge, and life elsewhere more than likely exists. The belief of Mars harboring potential life has been going on for many decades, each discovery further strengthening this opinion. I believe that an exploration-although expensive-is beneficial to the understanding of the origin of mankind, and the possibilities of discovering alternate societies of organisms. With “intriguing dark streaks” across the surface of Mars, scientists exclaim; the belief of life is strongly supported. The below freezing environment holding liquid water is similar to the arctic. Observing a photograph in elementary school, I was surprised to see icebergs floating on liquid seawater. As the search for life continues, how will scientists know if life really exists without solid proof? Not all life forms on this planet require sunlight to survive. So will all life forms require water? If not, should scientists try to search for life where they least expect it?

My current event is on Erik Highsmith, a wide receiver for UNC football. But this has nothing to do with football. It has to do with the fact that he plagiarized off of an 11 year olds essay on poultry. An insider has found out that an essay by a college student had been plagiarizing. The odd thing about this isn’t that he plagiarized but that he plagiarized a seven year olds work thinking it could pass for college material essay. This shows how much recruiters for sports actually look into their athletes grades. It also shows how smart Highsmith actually is.
My opinion is that Highsmith is no that smart and that when it comes to colleges they don’t look into grades but how well the person plays the sport. Knowing me as an athlete you have to keep your grades up and play your sport well but if you cannot manage that then you cannot manage college at all. If I had to ask him, I would ask why he thought it was okay to plagiarize. Also I would ask why he thought a piece of 11 year olds work would compare to one of a college student. Knowing that he is a division 1 sports player, people are monitoring their work and grades so they do not slip up. But when you allow yourself to do something that odd and not smart is horrible.

The United States Navy, is working on producing a robot for it’s ships, that will put out fires on board. The robot is called ASH, or Automated Shipboard Humanoid. ASH is going to be human like in appearance and size. The robot will have amazing self balance capabilities, which is a necessity due to the constantly changing conditions on the seas. The on board tests for ASH, will begin in around 1 year, in 2013.
I think that ASH is a great invention for our Navy. ASH will be able to save sailors lives, as well as save time spent worrying about a fire. With what we have learned, I feel like ASH relates to the Indus Valley’s plumbing system. It relates to this topic, because it is a technology that nobody else has, but that other civilizations will most likely have in the future. One question that I think is valid for ASH, is how successful will it be? Also, how long till it is released?

Sandy could ravage Northeast as 'Frankenstorm,' forecasters warn / By Ben Brumfield

Currently a category one hurricane named Sandy is traveling through the Atlantic Ocean to the New England area. Sandy is expected to make landfall around Halloween. That is one of the reasons the National Weather Service has nicknamed the storm ‘Frankenstorm’. The other reason for this nickname is that Sandy is expected to merge with a storm front coming across the central part of the United States. Sandy is also expected to have abnormally high amounts of flood water with it because of a full moon. Residents of the New England area are already preparing for long power outages and contaminated water supplies.
Honestly, I have very little experience with severe storms, but I do know that even a relatively small storm can knock out the power. And this is no small storm, this is a freaking hurricane that is going to hit one of the most densely populated areas of the United States. This reminds me of the monsoons that hit India. I wonder how much damage will be done?

Summary: When the Mars Rover landed on Mars, it found rounded rocks, stream beads, and other evidence of water on mars. Because rocks and other geographic features have evidence of water erosion, there must be something other than strong winds present. This suggests that there may have been ‘vigorous flows’ of water on mars, as well as streams, and maybe even lakes. there is still a mystery of if there is life and mars. Although water was present in large quanities, an energy source and carbon are essential for having life.

Opinion: I think that although there was water on mars, there may not of been life present without oxygen or carbon. There may also not have been a food source. However, I think that it is important to figure out if there was water on mars, as it may help us learn more about the orgions of life on earth. I also wonder if there is life on mars, and where also in the solar system water and even life may be.

    1) Due to financial instability all throughout the European Union, many countries have put austerity measures into place to help control their debt. These austerity measures include actions like cutting budgets, hiking up taxes and eliminating pensions. This has made people mad, so they have been going on strike. Spain is going through its first national strike since 2002. One man blocked the Irish parliament by parking a cement truck in the way.
    2) I think that this article was interesting because the financial situation in Europe is new that is going on today, that people will remember in the future. Also, while America’s economy has been experiencing a downturn in the past years, it is not in the worse position of Europe.

This article is about the civil war in Syria, but more specifically
that there is a temporary cease-fire over the weekend. The cease fire starts Friday and lasts through Monday for the Muslim holiday of Eid-Al-Adha.Both sides signed the treated brokered by Lakhdar Brahimi, but under strenuos on both sides. One of the rebel comanders is quoted a saying "we will observe it as long as the regime does, but we don't expect them to observe it for even one minute". This is coming at a time when rebels are gaining more and more territory in northern Syria, but both sides admit it will be a while before either give in.
I think this article is depressing. It shows that this war could last much longer with much more death and destruction. I think this whole war is needless and that they should follow the pattern of sudan and split the country if neither side can agree. Also I wish the UN came up with a plan to end the war.

Since we cannot control the forces of nature the next best thing is to be prepared for it. Major discoveries can happen any day at any time. This particular discoveries was made on a football field when a teacher noticed a brown patch of grass on the field. Under the football field archeologists found what is said to be Britain’s larges find since the 1960’s. They found a lavish Roman villa at Fshboume. Two forty-room villas are connected by a long hallway paved by a mosaic featuring dolphins. The mosaic was preserved for around 1,500 years because one of the buildings collapsed and the roof protected the art work. People are starting to talk about how the two villas look to be like part of an ancient town. The two villas are a major breakthrough for Britain.

There is a picture of the mosaic on the website and it looks super pretty. It a diamond shape that has lots of different patterns on it. To me the idea that there was an amazing piece of work just a few feet under a football field. It just proves that you can find amazing things in pretty much any place. Archeologists said that there was a flowerbed, a family cemetery, and outlying buildings that have yet to be excavated. I have never seen anything like this in person before but I think it would be cool to go see a mosaic some day. One question I had was if these buildings had anything to do with the part of Rome that we have studied?

It is insane that this was below a football field, like woudn't they know from making the football field originally that it was there? People were actually playing football over it. I think that it does have to do with the Rome we studied because Rome's empire once expanded into Brittain, with Hadrian's wall and such. This is really cool.

59.6 million people watched the third US presidential debate and surprisingly the demeanor was calm. The democratic candidate, President Barack Obama He talked about the improvements in foreign policy that he and his administration have made. The republican candidate Mitt Romney presented ideas about improvements he would make and tried to win people over. Overall, people voted that there was no definite winner and that seems to be correct about the whole election as well.
In my opinion both of these candidates have presented good and bad ideas. Obviously I’m not old enough to vote and so I don’t really have a say in what happens. Foreign policy is important, but the main thing America needs to focus on right now is ourselves which is why neither of the candidates opinions persuaded me.

He got up in the air in a balloon that took him up 24 miles above the earth. He got to speeds up to 830 mph, and broke the sound barrier. It took him over 4 minutes to get to the ground. During his fall he began to spin out of control but regained his body, pulled his parachute and drifted to the ground. This is important to world history because Felix Baumgartner broke the world record for farthest fall to earth, and he broke the sound barrier.

When I first saw this I was really shocked that someone would really do something like that, and I did not think that it was real at first. When I found out that it was real I wanted to learn more about it. I fell like it would be really cool if I could do this and there would be no chance at all for me to die. Started by a famous pianist, Joao Carlos Martins, underprivileged kids can get a free violin and classes every week. Yanca, however underprivileged she may be, finds music to be her "way out" of the slums. Joao Carolos Martins hopes to have 1,000 orchestras in underprivileged areas across the country. This relates to world history because it takes place in Brazil which is in South America, and regards the slums/favelas, which are common throughout Brazil.
I think that it's great that Joao Carolos Martins is offering this opportunity to kids who can't afford such a luxury. I play an instrument and it's a good hobby. Music is really great and it can be interpreted and expressed in so many different ways. I'm glad that Yanca has found something that changed her life (for the better) because she is living a very hard life. I appreciate when the more fortunate people use their time and money to benefit those who aren't as fortunate. It offers hope and encouragement.

On September 11th, 2012 there was another attack on the Americans, this time in Benghazi, Libya in which the American ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens and three other security personnel were killed in an attack on the American embassy. This tragedy, eleven years after September 11th, 2001, on the twin towers was devastating to all Americans. As we all know, Libya had a violent uprising last year against their leader, Mohammad Gaddafi, who was ultimately captured and killed by the rebels. However, this violence has continued in spite of the change in leadership. The Obama administration as well as intelligence community has been under intense scrutiny regarding how they handled the situation as it developed, and if this tragedy could have been averted. Defense secretary, Leon Panetta categorically states that the U.S. military was ready to attack but did not have sufficient information to act on. Also, at that time they were not aware that it was a terrorist attack and assumed that it was a spill-over from the civil unrest in that city.
I believe that there a failure of the intelligence at some level in the collection and analysis of information regarding the Taliban activity in the region. Instead of trying to turn the Benghazi attack and the deaths of U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, into a partisan blame game, policymakers would be better served by thinking about how to enhance U.S. intelligence capabilities. Intelligence failures are inevitable, but this also happens to be a volatile region. Hence, better precautions should have been taken. However, this has been the first killing of an ambassador since 1979. The rarity of this kind of terror attack actually demonstrates the success of U.S. intelligence agencies in keeping Americans safe.

Neanderthals have long been thought of as an uncivil stage in human evolution. But recent studies show they aren’t far off from the modern human. Not only were they able to cook and bury their dead, but they share some DNA with modern humans. In fact, there were not many differences between Neanderthals and Homo Sapiens that lived during the Ice Age. Some say there was interbreeding between the two, causing the similar DNA. Others simply believe they share a common ancestor from Africa. Either way Homo Sapiens lived to conquer the world while Neanderthals died out.
While scrolling through National Geographic, the first thing that caught my attention was the picture that goes with this article. To be honest, the article was not as good as I had anticipated. It jumped around from topic to topic, not allowing room for much detail on any one topic. What was interesting was that I knew terms like paleoanthropologist from our unit on prehistory. Hurricane Sandy is a huge super storm that is currently in near the Bahamas but is on target to hit the US. According to meteorologists the hurricane is literally the perfect storm, worst case it could combine with a cold front for more power. Currently it is on track to hit right on the border of Virginia near some of the most densely populated places in the country. Virginia, Maryland and New York have already declared states of emergency.
I think this article is a good example of why everyone should always be prepared; this could have an unexpected outcome. Also I am kind of worried because this hurricane will hit on the NC border so we might get some wind and rain, hopefully nothing to bad. Mostly I just think that it is good that the targeted states are already preparing for the worst so hopefully no one will be caught by surprise.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declares State of Emergency as Hurricane Sandy barrels through Caribbean, killing 40, Kenneth Lovett and Tina Moore
    DailyNews.com, October 26, 2012
    http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/new-york-prepares-sandy-pounds-bahamas-article-1.1193028

As of today, Friday, the Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, has called a state of emergency for New York City due to the recently devastating Hurricane Sandy. Having already left tons of destruction as a Category 2 storm in Cuba, the Bahamas, Haiti with flooding, as well as Florida with strong winds, New York City’s Mayor Bloomberg is now taking precautions. Some of these precautions include moving the inhabitants of the city’s hospitals and nursing homes out of the city with buses, the MTA shutting down buses and subways if wind speeds reach high levels, with underwater subways very able to be flooded, and using a plan, involving firemen and policemen and ConEd. The city even plans to close schools on Monday, and the mayor advises New Yorkers to stock up on necessary supplies because it is uncertain how long the hurricane will last. What is certain is how bad Sandy could get when it hits around Sunday, even as bad as Hurricane Irene, the plan for which will be used again to help deal with the hurricane. Hurricane Sandy has already left an awful impact in the Atlantic, and may do just as bad in the Northeast, becoming just as big an event and tragedy as Hurricane Irene was in history.

I believe that this article was not that well-written, yet it did have many quotations, which was good. It was also good at giving important information and facts. I personally know of how bad Hurricane Irene was in New York City because I was there visiting my grandmother. We had met my grandmother’s friend’s daughter and gone up to her apartment because she had been worried about the huge glass windows-for-walls of her high up place and whether or not they would break, which they didn’t. They also closed some of the subways, which affected many New Yorkers. With Hurricane Sandy expected to be as bad, this hurricane will be awful if it is bad. This article also relates to the monsoons of India we studied, especially with the flooding in Haiti. For others, what do you think should and would happen as precautions if the hurricane hit North Carolina, including us? Do you think that the hurricane will be as bad as Irene?

The conviction has sparked a large amount of controversy because many people believe that the scientists did the right thing and the 2% chance of an earthquake is not enough to justify an evacuation. People are also angry because of people could have been saved if the buildings had been up to code. Since no building inspection officials are being charged people think the government just wants a scapegoat.

I think that is absurd to try people for being wrong. If it were illegal to be wrong then no one would ever say anything. This sounds like something from the 1500s when the church kill people for believing in science instead of their religion. It is deplorable that they are being arrested for doing their job. If the Italian government thinks they are doing a bad job then they should just hire new people. In 2009, L’aquila, there was an earthquake that killed 300 people. The L’Aquila government disaster preparedness agency sentenced six scientists and a government official to six years in prison. They were sentenced for wrongly predicting an earthquake. Almost all scientists say that earthquakes are impossible to predict. In an area with lots of small tremors telling the population to evacuate would seem to be stupid. Two scientists resigned in protest.
I feel this is severely unfair. Scientists cannot predict earthquakes with certainty. Even with the best detection equipment, there does not leave enough time to evacuate. And when you have regular tremors, and it is unlikely that there is a big earthquake, you don’t usually tell people to evacuate. Because there probably is not a big earthquake coming your way. This is like the ancient river valley civilizations with unpredictable floods.

Cynthia Osokogu was a young model who was the daughter of a general. She was making a name for herself with her own fashion boutique and had graduated from grad school not a long time ago. She had travelled to Lagos for merchandise for her store, but was killed during her time there. Cynthia had made plans to meet some sellers after chatting with them on facebook for a period of time. The ‘sellers’ offered to pay for her flight and hotel, so she took the offer and met them at the hotel, where she was drugged and killed. These men have been identified and they will be put to trial for this murder. This current event is significant to world history because it deals with the evolution of criminal law and the ways the punishments have evolved.

My opinion on this article is that I thought that cynthia was being a little too careless. While this terrible thing that happened to her was all the fault of her facebook stalkers, she could have been a little more cautious. I would think that she would have experienced this stalking and untruthful people being a model and having that kind of attention pointed to her. This makes me rethink the safety of facebook, even though I know that the internet was not safe at all. I thought that facebook had certain security measures that was applied to everyone’s account. This makes me more cautious of friend requests from people I do not know. My personal experience about the internet and shady characters is about a website I made when I was in 3rd grade. It was a blog and I put random facts on it and there was a chat option with it. Someone claimed to be someone I knew and asked me to give them my information. I checked with the person that they claimed to be and they said they did not know I had a blog so I stopped chatting with the person. This experience was scary to me and my mom freaked out so I understood the security of the internet was not very stable.

Syrian: Damascus car bomb killed kids near playground
By Ashley Fantz and Salma Abdelaziz
Syria has been through a lot from rebellions to fighting. Earlier a truce had been announced by the Syrian government, but on Friday, a car bomb exploded and killed many children. The children were playing in a playground, children! Five to ten people were killed and thirty two were hurt. No one knows who actually planned this, but the state is saying it was the “terrorists.” The people and parents were angry, innocent kids were playing at a playground and ended up dead.

I thought this was horrible especially given these were probably innocent kids who had no idea about all the rebellions. This is so sad because not only in this situation, but in everyday life people are so cruel. I feel it is terrible that there are people out there who would just set off a bomb anywhere hoping to kill people. These children were trying to have fun and they already have to suffer from growing up in a place with so much violence and unrest. From my experience I have never actually seen people get killed, but there are always new articles in Chapel Hill about shootings and murders. Is it really necessary to kill people, especially innocent kids, just to show a sign of rebellion?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I do not understand why anybody would do such a thing and hurt innocent people. This is very sad, and it's even worse that small little children were killed. :( I think that terrorists and people who want to show signs of rebellion target children because they are people's weak spot. Many people love children and care for them. They want to protect their children and will be more cooperative if they know their children might get hurt. It is horrible that people would attack the young and the innocent, but it makes sense that they do. This causes the people to be less likely to go against the rebellion and more passive/ not active because they do not want their children to get hurt.

On October 25, 2012 in Manhattan, Yoselyn Ortega, the hired nanny, stabbed the two children, 6 year old Lucia and 2 year old Leo, to death. Then she proceeded to stab herself. Lucia and Leo’s mother, Marina Krim, was out with her 3 year old Nessie to swim lessons. Yoselyn was called “Josie” by the family and was taking care of the other two children while their mom was out. Josie was supposed to meet Marina for Lucia’s dance lesson, but Josie never showed. Then, Marina went back to her apartment, but the lights were out. She asked the doorman if her nanny and children had left, and he said no. Then Marina searched her apartment. Marina found her two children stabbed to death in the bathtub and their nanny on the ground stabbed and with a knife. Her neighbors heard Marina scream and called 911. Ortega killed the two children and slit her own throat and wrists; she is now in the hospital recovering. The Krims have known Josie for two years, and she has worked for them as a nanny ever since. This is important to world history because it has affected and startled many people and has changed their perceptions of nannies.

This is an atrocity. I cannot believe a nanny would do such a thing. Josie has been with the family for two years and probably loved the children and family. I am not sure what might have made her snap. It is horrible that the nanny killed these young children who barely had begun their lives. I feel horrible for the parents of the children, Marina and Kevin. In the article, it also stated that the nanny was trying to get help for psychological issues. Her psychological issue that she wanted to get help on probably contributed to her killing the children. This is absolutely terrible, and it changes my perspective on how people you know very well and trust can snap and do horrible things. I personally have never been taken care of by a nanny. My sister is 9 years older than me, so whenever my parents went out she would take care of me and my brother. When I grow up, I am not sure if I’d be comfortable with someone else taking care of my children now that I have read this article. I wonder why the nanny snapped. Why was she still working if she had a psychological problem? Why didn’t she get this issue checked out earlier?

    1. That's so terrible, wow. The only reasonable explanation I would be able to come up with for something as spontaneous as this is most likely the nanny had struggle and psychological problems. However, if I were the parents, I would definitely keep checking out who was taking care of my children solo, even if she had been with them for two years. You can't really be too trusting, which is sad, but true.

    2. It is really sad that this has happened to the family. The child that survived will grow up and feel so guilty because it was them that lived. The parents may never feel able to leave someone with her alone again. This situation was hard to prevent. The nanny could have voiced her fears about the issues to the family, but that may have been embarrassing.

Title: Early Human ‘Lucy’ Swung From the Trees
    Author: Charles Choi
    Source: http://www.livescience.com/24297-early-human-lucy-swung-from-trees.html
    Date: 10/25/12

    Summary:
New research surrounding the Australopithecus afarensis, the species of hominid that the famed “Lucy” belonged to, suggests that spent much of their time up in the trees. Scientists found a remarkably well- preserved female skeleton from this lineage in Dikka, Ethiopia, which they named “Selam.” Selam’s shoulder blades were of particular interest to the scientists because of their similarity to those of apes. For example, the socket joint faced up, which is a sign of a climbing animal. Because shoulder blades are so thin, they are very rarely so well fossilized, and it is amazing that they were found in such good condition. Others features of Selam, including her hip and foot bones reaffirm that the Australopithecus afarensis were bipedal for at least some portion of their lives. The question of where on the evolution trail humans were at this point in time has been one of much contention over the past couple of decades, and the findings in this new skeleton just may clear some of those up. Paleoanthropologist Zeresenay Alemseged remarked that “"The skeleton of Selam is a goldmine of scientific information,"

    Response:
I chose this article because we have been studying some of the ancestors of early humans in World History, and I was interested to learn more about them. I liked this article because it clearly laid out the necessary information in a compelling manner. One thing I did not like about it was that there were many scientists referenced in the article, and the number of names was a bit confusing. This is an important discovery because it answers some of the questions we have had about some of the earliest hominids. The more we know as a species about where we came from, the more we can understand about ourselves today. I am sure that many anthropologists and other scientists will be very interested in these new findings. One question I did have while reading this article, was about the implications of this discovery. If we do know with relative confidence that the Australopithecus afarensis lived both on the ground and in the trees, what will this mean for studies of early people?

This article discusses the revelation that the Chinese Prime Minister, Wen Jiabao, and his family have been using there high ranking position to gain and conceal personal wealth. They have been hiding their wealth using a chain of companies. The news broke here in the US by a New York Times Article. The Chinese government has immediately restricted access to the NY Times web site to slow the spread of this news within China.

This comes at a delicate time in Chinese politics, as China is undergoing a once in a decade transition of leadership.

This new event demonstrates a contradiction; where China wants to be a member of the modern and open world economy, but China also seems to hold on control over the information circulating in their society. I don't see how the control of information can last. The internet censoring done by China's government is sometimes called the "Great Firewall of China", but I can not believe that the tech-savvy teenagers and young adults don't have access to this information, so we are probably seeing just the beginning of a long reaction to this story.

This is a good example of why we need an open media with lots of news sources.

    1. The fact that the Chinese Prime Mister and his family are doing such things is wrong. I agree with you that it is most likely that some people are not faced with the "great firewall of China". I do believe that there are many people that have not been able to see this info though. Having an open media in China would be very important as well.

Tyrann Mathieu and 3 other former LSU football players, including quarterback Jordan Jefferson was arrested for marijuana possession. Tyrann had been kicked off the LSU football team after he had failed on multiple drug tests. He gave police consent to search his apartment, and they found a marijuana grinder as well as 10 bags of high grade weed. The LSU former quarterback Jordan Jefferson was also charged with possession and he too was arrested.
In my opinion, they were very dumb. They were great stars, very good football players. As soon as you get very well known, you will be scrutinized and you will probably get searched. The same things seem to be happening all around the league. I don’t know if it’s just happening now or if police are really cracking down now. It’s sad for 4 good players to make such poor decisions.

I think LSU made the right choice in kicking out the player. I also think this is happening a lot as of late and I think it is because they have lost self-control and don't realize how much they can lose over Drugs and alcohol.

On Holiday of Sacrifice, Many Syrians Cannot Celebrate
    By Salma Abdelaziz, CNN

    http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2012/10/26/on-holiday-of-sacrifice-many-syrians-cannot-celebrate/?hpt=hp_t3

This article is about the celebration of Eid al-Adha, which means the “The Feast of Sacrifice”. This is one of two major holidays in Islam. Eid al-Adha remembers Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son for God. The holiday is celebrated by giving food and meat to the poor. This year, it has been more difficult to celebrate in Syria and Pakistan because of violence and government instability. A civil war in Syria has killed 30,000 people and has caused the country’s economy to be at a standstill. Many of the poor that rely on the gifts of the holiday will be without food. Even those people that provided food in the past are without food and water. Because of the civil war, Eid al-Adha has become a time of fear and uncertainty rather than a time of unity and happiness. It is similar to losing the holiday season in the United States because of fighting between groups of states. The article estimates that over 100,000 children will be negatively impacted by the war and loss of this tradition of sacrifice.

This article reminds me of how important traditions are to a country. Similar to Eid al-Adha, the Christmas season in the United States is a time for giving and celebration. Without this tradition, many of the poor and needy might not be able to find food. Families might not be able to gather which could lead to sadness and hopelessness. This article causes me to wonder what might happen in the United States if a modern civil war occurred. Why do people within a country go to War? What if people with wealth were suddenly unable to help the poor?

A tomb from 2,200 years ago of an early Mayan ruler was uncovered on Thursday by a group of archaeologists. As the archaeologists discovered this massive historical object, the found that it was also buried with jewelry and decorations. They believe that this discovery will shed light on the developmental years of the Mayan civilization. Also in the tomb they found large amounts of jade, which suggests trade strategies as well as a lack of any human bones, most likely due to decaying. Many new doors are left to be uncovered by this major discovery, including new theories, links to other cultures, etc.

This is really cool that things from centuries ago are still being uncovered today. I feel like whenever a major archaeology discovery happens, the best part is trying to connect the dots and learn more about historical things the rest of the world doesn’t know yet. It’s strange to think that underneath all of the dirt, in some places, there is monumental treasures. Look at past archaeology finds; dinosaurs, tombs of great rulers, and even shipwrecks. This is not exactly similar to what we’ve been learning in class, but it’s from a little bit earlier than the time period we just learned, and it is resurfacing this many years later. Pretty amazing. It does make you wonder though, how many more things are we going to find in the present day that connects us to the past? Do you think there will be any really extraordinary finding underground somewhere in the world, something more major than this?

Judge: New Jersey brothers accused of killing girl with remain detained
    By Christine Theodoru
    CNN, 10/26/12

A 12 year old girl, Autumn Pasquale, was found dead Monday in a recycling container in southern New Jersey. The two teenage boys, 15 and 17, who were accused of killing the girl were ordered by Superior Court Judge Colleen Maier to stay in the detention center for at least two more weeks. Autumn was said to have been lured to the boy’s home in Clayton, where she was strangled and died from blunt force trauma. They believe the girl may have been killed for her BMX bike, which the police found in her possessions. The two boys turned themselves in on Tuesday, the day after her death. Autumn’s funeral will be on Saturday, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Glassboro.
I think it is tragic that a young girl was murdered for such a stupid reason as getting a bike. The boys who are responsible for this horrible act should face consequences far worse than two weeks in juvenile detention. My hope is that when this case is brought to court that the boys will be given a longer sentence. Although it is a good thing that they turned themselves in, I still do not understand how people can kill other human beings. It is a very sad story and my heart goes out to all those who are grieving the loss of this young girl.

“Smithfield Man Found Guilty in 74-year-old’s Beating”
    Source: http://www.wral.com/smithfield-man-found-guilty-in-2010-beating-death/11705854/

In June of 2010, there was a beating of a 74-year-old woman reported. Yesterday, a man from Smithfield, Mathew Hagert Salentine, was found guilty for beating this woman and charged with first-degree murder. The death of the 74-year-old has impacted multiple people greatly. Salentine is said to be bi-polar and a crack cocaine addict but he didn’t seem like he was the type of person to rob or kill someone. The jury is now deciding if Salentine is to face a death penalty or not and the hearing for that began earlier this morning.

I think that this article was really sad. It’s an example of how illegal drugs can cause you to make unintelligent decisions. I never understand people’s thoughts behind murder because it seems that every time the person committing the crime “isn’t the type of person to harm someone”. Obviously they are. No one should ever have to experience losing a loved one in such an awful way. It surprised me as to why the man committed the crime in the first place: he became addicted to crack again and needed money to purchase it so had to rob the 74-year-old. Salentine brought a wrench with him so that when the woman found him in the process of doing this, he could beat her. That comes to show you how doing drugs can have long-term effects on your life. Although this topic has nothing to do with what we’re learning in class, I found that why the crime was committed very interesting. In general, why do you think most crimes are committed?

Article - Ozone hole at smallest size in decades, by Erin Wayman

    http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/346068/description/Ozone_hole_at_smallest_size_in_decades
Ever since humans started polluting the atmosphere, the gas ozone’s levels have been going down drastically. Ozone is a gas in the atmosphere that helps block out the UV light from the sun, and therefore helps stop global warming. Every summer, a large hole in the atmospheric ozone layer opens bigger than usual, but this year it was the smallest size since 1990. The hole is over Antarctica, and if it got too bad, the polar ice would melt extremely fast. In terms of world history, this is showing that even though we are in the most environmentally turbulent time in human existence, we are overcoming it like never before, and making progress over our history.
I think this article is very good because it is telling us we are doing well with the environment. Our new policies and world awareness is helping us to cut down on this hole, helping slow the melting ice sheets. In 2002, the hole was 29.9 million square kilometers, and this year it is 21.2 km2, which is telling us that we are improving our amount of pollution very well in recent years. My only question from the article is, how much does this hole in the ozone layer affect the melting ice, and how much are we predicted to decrease that hole in the near future?
I am going to comment on Robert Fernald’s post.

This article is about how a bomb went off near a playground in Syria, after the ceasefire between the government and rebel parties. This was during a holiday near a relatively undisturbed place (in terms of violence). This explosion killed several people, some of which were children. The citizens immediately blamed the government, but it is still undetermined as to who did it.

It think this event is very unfortunate and sad because people were just minding their day, thinking it would be safe to go out and celebrate their holiday, but in the end were bombed. Though this is unfortunate on it's own, this happened after a truce, which should have prevented events like this. Hopefully this issue will be solved soon so that innocent civilians won't be harmed in this conflict.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/shortcuts/2012/oct/25/gangnam-style-seouls-most-exclusive-neighbourhood

Gangnam Style is a viral music video by South Korean singer Psy, a video in which he dances a dance that is akin to riding a horse. The song itself is about Psy’s “ideal girl” (of course it is. Are songs these days about anything else?). Gangnam is a place in South Korea, and Psy alludes to that (obviously) throughout his song. I feel that this is very important to the study of world history because Psy has managed a few incredible feats in the span of four months: 1) reached #3 on the Most-Viewed Youtube Videos chart, 2) reached #2 on Hot 100 Billboard, and 3) signed a deal with the guy who discovered Justin Bieber. I mean, really? How much cooler can you get?

Hearing about Gangnam Style just makes me so proud. I love South Korea, and it’s fantastic to hear the song on the radio, or just to hear people referencing it. I like that we’ve expanded our culture enough to be so accepting of others. Gangnam Style is probably one of the most random things you could ever hear on G105, and yet, Psy’s managed it. Although it’s not very applicable to what we’ve been learning in class, I find it really amazing that Psy has done something so unthinkable, and I’m proud of that.

Sandy Pounds Bahamas After Killing 22 in Caribbean

    http://news.yahoo.com/sandy-pounds-bahamas-killing-22-caribbean-125413620--finance.html

Last Friday a newly formed hurricane, hurricane Sandy, made it’s way through the Caribbean. Sandy devastated parts of the Bahamas such as Cuba, by destroying houses and causing flooding. It also killed 11 Cubans (22 people throughout the Caribbean) making it the deadliest hurricane to hit Cuba in a very long time. Hurricane Sandy was not only deadly in the Caribbean but very costly because of all the damage to the homes and cities. This current event is significant to our studies because it relates to the natural challenges faced by the early river valley and water side civilizations.
I have lived on the east coast my entire life and have faced many tropical storms/ hurricanes that a lot of which cause some form of damage to my community. These hurricanes/tropical storms that I have faced though are very different than the ones the Caribbean faces. In the warm Caribbean waters near to where they form the hurricanes are very strong and forceful and cause extreme damage, whereas where on the east coast the storms have slowed down and the water is cooler making them less intense and forceful. I thought it was terrible to hear how much damage a single storm/hurricane could cause people when the very same storms can hit us and we be barely affected at all. These hurricanes are similar to the monsoons and river flooding the people of early river civilizations had to face. In what other ways do these horrible storms compare with what ancient people river valleys faced? What do we do differently to overcome these obstacles?

During the 4 day Muslim holiday of Eid-al-Adha on Friday afternoon a car bomb exploded killing 10 people and wounding 32 in Damascus. The bomb blew up right near a playground killing mostly children. No one knows exactly who planted this car bomb but with all the conflict going on in Syria there are speculations of certain groups naming them “terrorists”. After the explosion Syria security showed up and started opening fire amongst citizens filming the chaos. This event has started small demonstrations against Assad regime. Also there have been several demonstrations for the many incidents that have taken place all over Syria killing over 32,000 people.
I think it is terrible that things like this are happening all over Syria. The thought of planed killings of several children in a playground is awful and it is inhumane to do such a thing. After the event I was startled by the fact that Syrian security started opening fire amongst the citizens dispersing from the scene and videotaping it. There definitely could have been better ways this event could be handled. If a event like this occurred in the us then it would be the headline of the news for several months but with all the attacks happening in the middle east and Syria this even goes into a list of hundred of bombing that are of the same or worse intensity. Steps need to be taken to resolve these attacks and reestablish peace.

Syria cease-fire: Could it really happen?

    CNN news
    http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/24/world/meast/syria-civil-war/index.html?hpt=hp_inthenews

The Syrian regime has agreed "in principle" to a cease-fire, which would signal the end of Syria's nearly two-year civil war, but rebels fighting to oust President Bashar al-Assad are skeptical. A cease-fire in April barely lasted a day before bodies started falling again. In total, more than 32,000 Syrians have died since the conflict began in March 2011. This time, the proposal to lay down weapons would cover the Eid al-Adha holiday, but there's been no formal statement from al-Assad's office, though it has promised one Thursday. Russia and China have longstanding trade partnerships with Syria and have been accused of favoring the al-Assad regime. Both have repeatedly vetoed attempts in the Security Council to take tougher action against the Syrian government.
I think that it is good that they are attempting to end the bloody civil war that has ravaged the country for nearly two years. It's a sign that change could be happening, but with all the recent turmoil in the middle east, "Arab Spring", the cease-fire could just be a hoax or small talk. Nothing really is could get accomplished. There have been lots of people dying in Syria and this cease-fire would help people live, but there are countries like Russia and China who are against taking action against the Syrian government because there has been a longstanding trade between the countries.
There are measures you need to take to carry out a cease-fire and so far no stepping stones are clear.

Northeast in crosshairs of 'superstorm' Sandy
By Mariano Castillo and Ben Brumfield, CNN
    CNN news
    http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/26/us/tropical-weather-sandy/index.html?hpt=hp_c1

Hurricane Sandy has claimed close to two dozen lives in the Caribbean already, and it might cause more deaths and destruction if it hits United States Northeast. The thing that most meteorologists are worried about is the chance of hurricane Sandy merging with a cold front from the west, causing a "superstorm" that could sit over New England for days. The places that the storm could hit in the United States are hard to predict at this point; computers have predicted it striking the border separating North Carolina and Virginia and north to Connecticut. The National Hurricane Center reported tropical storm watches and warnings were in effect, covering parts of the Florida and Carolina coasts. The hurricane has also effected the presidential race in a way. Joe Biden cancelled his visit to Virginia beach and Mitt Romney's campaign rally was also cancelled.
I think that this "superstorm" could be one of the most devastating natural disasters in the history of mankind. The storm could potentially cause more damage than any other hurricane ever recorded. If this storm hits the United States, it could cause many major problems, such as structure damage, death or it could effect the already weakened economy. I really hope that the hurricane does not cause much more damage and I hope that the United States, as well as other countries in possibly imminent danger, will survive through the storm and rebuild any damages caused.

Cahir escaped with many cool photographs of the sharks.
    2) This article was very interesting. I don’t know how Cahir was brave enough to jump into the water with a shark. It makes me wonder if he was some kind of shark specialist. I’m glad Cahir was unharmed and that he took so many pictures. The pictures that he took really offer a great view of the shark.

    1. I think its really great that he just jumped in there like that. Without that kind of bravery and initiative, we would never be able to learn new things. I also find it interesting that it is not something practical. Really cool story!

I read an article titled Northeast in crosshairs of 'superstorm' Sandy written by Ben Brumfield and Mariano Castillo; published on the CNN website on October 26, 2012. (http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/26/us/tropical-weather-sandy/index.html)
There has been evidence suggesting Hurricane Sandy could become a disastrous “Superstorm.” If the already-deadly storm were to combine with the cold front in the west, the threat of this storm could double. Already about two dozen people have lost their lives to this hurricane, and it is only just beginning. Meteorologists believe that this storm will hit the Northeast of the U.S. on Monday. It will include intense winds and a full on rainstorm.
I think that this storm could be very dangerous. It mentioned in the article that the storm was currently making its way through South Carolina. This scares me because we are very close to South Carolina. Also, this hurricane could have been the cause of our gloomy weather today. It is slightly scary to think that this storm could become even more dangerous. Some questions I had about the article were: Is this storm going to affect North Carolina? How long until it disperses? What technology do meteorologists use to discover information about deadly storms such as this one?

    http://edition.cnn.com/2012/10/18/world/americas/peru-landslide/index.html
In Peru’s Jungle, heavy rains caused a mudslide to emerge and kill 11 people, and there are still 10 unaccounted for. Six of the 11 bodies are presumably children. It also destroyed at least 10 houses and a pedestrian bridge. The mudslide sent tree and rock debris crashing into houses and knocking over people in the village. The villagers, military and the civil defense officials are still looking for more bodies, hopefully those that are alive, but are being held back by a local river flooding. Peru's government is sending humanitarian aid, including tents and sheets in hope of helping recover some of what is left of their society. This relates to world history because natural disasters were the end to many great civilizations and caused great problems for them as well.
It is devastating to hear that so much was destroyed in their society, especially when they didn’t have much to begin with. In America we are so used to having news reports tell you when we can expect disaster and we have the equipment to protect us. But unfortunately for those living in the jungle in Peru, they don’t have those kinds of technologies. Already being so prepared for anything is part of the way we live so I wonder how the people in those villages have adapted to natural disasters, since they clearly don’t have much defense. I also think America should be helping advance less developed countries because right now it seems that we are selfish with our knowledge. In the past year or so, there have also been landslides in India and China. The only time I’ve ever felt fear of a natural disaster was when I was four years old and there was a hurricane passing through. Nothing whatsoever happened, but I was still terrified so I can’t even imagine the level of terror those in Peru, India and China must have experienced. There have also been things like hail storms or blizzards that I’ve experienced but I’ve grown up thinking it was fun because you got to go sit by the fire and stay cozy, but now I realize how much the thing I find fun can negatively affect others’ lives. For instance, the early civilizations of China and Mesopotamia which had flooding of rivers and India which had seasonal winds called monsoons. One of the early civilizations was said to have disappeared because of natural disasters. The question is what can we do to help?

The young Pakistani education activist Malala Yousufzai was reunited with her family on Thursday. She is being treated for a bullet wound to the head in Birmingham, England. She was shot by the Taliban because of her activism for girls' education. The Taliban decreed that girls in her area couldn't go to school but she stood up for her rights. While she does have serious injuries, she is going to be alright and has made some progress such as walking and talking. Doctors will have to reconstruct her skull so she will have to remain in the hospital for a couple months. Pakistan has offered to have complete protection on her when she returns.

    Response:
I'm glad that her family was flown to meet her as they will be encouraging in her struggle to get better. However, since there has not been much damage to her brain and she can remember things from before the tragedy, doctors think that she will not have many permanent effects. I think another encouraging factor will be knowing that she is basically a household name in Britain, the US, Pakistan and other countries. She has also been nominated for a Children's Peace Prize. I think with everyone's support Malala will make a full recovery and continue to spread her message throughout Pakistan and other countries.

Frenzied preparations as East Coast braces for possible 'superstorm'
    by the CNN Wire Staff
    CNN, Saturday 27 2012
    http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/27/us/tropical-weather-sandy/index.html?hpt=hp_inthenews

All around the east coast of the United States people are in a panic. Hurricane Sandy, a category 1 hurricane is headed towards the US. It had earlier hit Haiti and Cuba where it left homes devastated and flooded. In Chapel Hill, we are lucky because we will miss the worst of the storm. However, in places like New York and Virginia people are rushing to get supplies for the upcoming storm. In places like the New Jersey Barrier Islands, people were told to evacuate due to the storm. It is predicted to cause much damage to homes. Some people are leaving their homes that will be hit by the storm while others decided to stay in their homes and see what will happen.

I think that the fact that Hurricane Sandy would be this damaging is very scary. I hope that all of the people that will be hit with the Hurricane will be ok. I think that we are all very lucky that we will not get hit by this bad storm, all that we will get is rain. I, myself have never really been in a dangerous storm, but I have been in strong storms that have cut the power. I think the main thing for people is not to panic. It is a good idea to stock up though because you could then be comfortable in the middle of a storm. I think that the people in the storm will be ok, unless there is someone that decides to go outside. I think that there will also be some damage to houses along the coast since that will be the worst area that the storm will hit. I believe that everybody should be aware of the storm and also to wish that no one will get injured.

    1. Your second paragraph is really thoughtful. You seem very worried about the people that haven't evacuated the area. Also, when you said that you said that you have never been in a storm of this size I find that you are very lucky. They are so powerful and strong. I can say that it does make your argument sound stronger, that you have never been in a storm this size. It makes your statements all the more stronger.

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2012/10/29/hurricane-sandy-power-utilities/1666519/

This article is about the damage that hurricane sandy is doing to thousands of people in so many places. It goes on to say that about 10 million people's power has gone out from West Virginia to Maine and even as far as Chicago. Monday is when all of this hurricane has really hit hard. PEople with out power, flooding, panic. It has even gone so far to say that some nuclear power plants in Sandy's way have been shut down. This hurricane is powerful and is now headed for New York where it will power its way through. With high winds and waves this hurricane has put so many in danger.
I think that this hurricane is very dangerous and scary. I was at the beach this past weekend, sharing our beach with this hurricane. The waves were huge and the winds rattled the house to point where it swayed with the wind. Something i do worry about though is all the people who aren't prepared fro the hurricane and this type of weather, what will happen to them if they cant leave their homes to get somewhere safer? It is horrifying to think that such a strong and large storm can do so much to so many.

  98. Suicide bomber at Muslim mosque shatters holiday that celebrates peace

A day of a joyous religious holiday for Muslims was ruined by a suicide bomber in the Faryab province of Afghanistan. There were 40 recorded deaths, many of them being children. There were also 50 injuries! There is no concrete person that took responsibility, but the blame goes to the Taliban leader, Mullah Omar. This is significant to World History, because first of all it connects to last week’s current event about the Taliban Group, and it influences many people in the world.
This article made me very sad, but also disgusted. I would be really disappointed in the person who had the audacity to go and not only kill themselves in the public, but also intentionally put others in danger. I really hope people in the future will realize the impact of what they are doing to the society when they do something like this.

  99. On Tuesday, 17 year old Austin Sigg was charged with the kidnapping and murder of a ten year old girl. Sigg was also charged last spring with the attempted murder of a 22 year old jogger. Sigg was arrested a week ago and accused of kidnapping the little girl, chopping up her body, and dumping it in the crawlspace directly underneath his own home.

I believe that whatever charge this man gets will be too small of a charge. The fact that he was able to cold heartedly kidnap and murder a small child proves that he is not fit to live in society. However, I do not support the death sentence. Of course, some criminals have done terrible things but no one deserves to die. Also, I believe that a lifetime in jail his worse than death..

Title: The Richest Man in History Amassed a $400 Billion Fortune Mining Gold and Salt in Africa

    URL: http://www.mining.com/the-richest-man-in-history-amassed-a-400-billion-fortune-mining-gold-in-africa-80949/
