1)Ex- Los Angeles police officer Christopher Jordan Dorner, has recently been fired from the LAPD. Right now, Dorner's location is unknown. The LAPD is looking all over Los Angeles in search for the former policeman. It is said that Dorner is on the loose killing and injuring policeman, he has already killed two, in revenge to their racism. Dorner threats the white officers that were racist towards the black officers.

    2) I think that this is a very scary situation. Dorner is a big threat to all families and LAPD officers. He could hurt anyone very seriously. Lot's of citizens in L.A are very scared and frightened that the police department has not yet found Christopher Dorner. They are still searching all over for him, they found Dorner's car lit on fire. It has now been five days since Dorner has last been seen. In my opinion, this is a very serious and scary situation.

Tough U.N. action vowed after North Korean nuclear test

    2/12/13
    http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/11/world/asia/north-korea-seismic-disturbance/index.html?hpt=wo_c1

North Korea, allegedly on the verge of creating nuclear weapons, is now looked down upon by the U.N. Security Council. The Council stated that they would take "significant action" if they test nuclear weapons again. It is not just the U.N. Security Council, but around the entire globe the testing drew condemnation from. This is the first nuclear test that the new leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, carried out. The young predecessor of Kim Jong Il seems to be sticking to his father's idea of increasing the amount of their weapons and ignoring condemnation of other nations.

I believe that North Korea could be a possible threat in the future. If they continue in this pursuit of creating nuclear weapons, the world may have to take action on North Korea to stop their progress. It seems like the isolated country does not respond well to diplomats and continues their actions, which makes negotiations a slim option. I think that Kim Jong Un is following the path of his father and due to that, North Korea will not change it's restricting ways.

Title: “too tired to go on, pope Benedict resigns”
Author: Hada Messia and Michael Pearson

    Date: Monday, February 11, 2013
    URL: http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/11/world/europe/pope-benedict-resignation/index.html

    1) Just yesterday, the Pope announced that he was resigning. This is a huge deal because this has not happened since the 1400s. Why he decided to resign, we’re not sure, but most think that it is because his health is
Currently not great. The kind of candidate they are looking for in the next pope is a “holy man”, which is what they normally look for in a pope. Many people are upset that he is resining. He will be missed as a pope.
    2) Whatever we study in history, most of the time (especially in Europe) a pope is involved one way or another. That is how this article relates to what we are learning in class. I think that it’s good that the pope is resigning. He should worry about his health and enjoy his later years of life. I can understand why a lot of people could be upset though. For the most part he was a great pope, and it’s easy to fear change. But I feel confident that the next pope will be just as great.

"Ravens lost track of Lombardi Trophy briefly after Super Bowl win," by Cindy Boren, 2/4/2013
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/early-lead/wp/2013/02/04/ravens-lost-lombardi-trophy-briefly-after-super-bowl-win/

Well this article basically (and extremely briefly) summarizes the temporary loss of the Lombardi Trophy after the Ravens (boo..) won the Super Bowl a few weeks ago. Does that mean they didn't deserve it? Ha. Okay, that might have been unfair. But still, the 49ers were so close to winning! Seriously! All right, I'll cool it with the team bias. It was funny to hear about, though, because I was kind of bummed about the 49ers losing, and the fact that the Ravens LOST the trophy made me laugh.

Since the article was very short, there's not much to talk about, so I'll just try to ramble for 5-7 sentences. In essence, it talked about how John Harbaugh "joked" about losing the trophy (haha, obviously San Francisco is better) but was actually serious, hilarious because he said it at the beginning of a press conference, and as a result of COURSE people would start to speculate... smart, right? But then later he slyly thanked whoever had returned the trophy, so I guess that's all good and done. Although I'm still bummed about the 49ers losing, it'll be a whole different story at the Duke/UNC game tomorrow night... watch out, Tar Heels! :)

Article: Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation explained (CNN.com)
    By Susannah Cullinane on 2/12/13
    URL: http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/11/world/europe/pope-resignation-q-and-a/index.html?hpt=hp_bn2

On Monday, February 11, the current Pope Benedict XIV announced that he would resign on February 28, 2013. The pope is the head of the Catholic Church who lives in the Vatican (Vatican City). Pope Benedict, who is 85 years old, said he was stepping down because his health is too poor and he is too old to continue to fulfill his duty as a pope. Benedict was elected the pope in 2005 following the death of Pope John Paul II. This event is important because it will be the first time a pope has resigned in 600 years, since the “Great Western Schism”. When the pope steps down a new pope will be elected. The elections are expected to be in March, and the Church should have a new leader before Easter. In the complex election process, the cardinals of the Catholic Church will meet up and vote for a new pope. They will continuously vote until one candidate receives two thirds of the vote, making him the new pope.
I was very surprised to hear that the pope was resigning. I knew that he was in bad health, but a pope is supposed to be the pope for life. It is especially surprising because a pope has not resigned in 600 years. Even though I’m surprised, I think Pope Benedict has the right to resign, and that he did the correct thing. If you aren’t able to fulfill your religious duties as the head of the Catholic Church because you are too weak, than it is the right thing to let someone else take control. I am Christian, but not Catholic, so this doesn’t really affect me. This relates to how we studied the Holy Roman Empire with the Pope ruling over religiously a few weeks ago. Should the pope be allowed to resign? How will this impact the Catholic Church?

Article: Stalled out on Tesla's EV Highway
    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/10/automobiles/stalled-on-the-ev-highway.html?pagewanted=3&ref=technology
    By John M Broder
    published feb 8
John M Broder test drove an electric car powered by a battery from the Tesla company. There were charging stations along I-95. Unfortunately, the battery did not last long enough for him to complete the trip from Delaware to Boston. It was from the cold weather, and what should have been an easy trip was very difficult. John M Broder ended up having to get towed. He put his emergency brake on before the tow truck came, but the emergency brake is electrically powered, so the tow truck driver had to literally drag the car onto the flat bed.
I think that Tesla has a very good idea, but it obviously has to make its battery much better. I think that Tesla needs at least a year to make improvements on the car so it can drive in the North East, because the temperature obviously limits the battery range. I'm not even sure that it will be very environmentally healthy, because the amount of electricity needed to power the cars is enormous. If a lot of cars are on the road and there are a lot of charging stations, there could be an enormous amount of electricity that is used. I think it is an intriguing idea, and obviously there probably has been some research to see if it is more environmentally healthy that gas powered cars.

  7. China Looms Over Response to Blast Test by North Korea

    2/12/13

Information has shown that North Korea had carried out yet another nuclear test. This is there third in past months. The United Nations has met and is consulting on proposing and enforcing strict sanctions that will put an end to these tests. Some of the sanctions include the banning of certain nuclear items and strict inspections on ships carrying good to the country of North Korea. China has been contributing to the talk about the rules being set for North Korea. Recently the Chinese Communist Party is in good relations with Korea’s Policy. The agreement with latching down on nuclear items in Korea could possibly dampen the relationships with the two a bit and could possibly cause problems in the future.
In my opinion I think that China should not even worry about relations with North Korea. The testing of nuclear weapons is a very dangerous practice not only for the country but also mostly for the world. Because nations have continued to keep each other posted about their nuclear activity it does not give North Korea permission to test weapons behind our back. I agree with the sanctions that are being posed on the country and I hope they are carried out well and enforced. Nuclear activity in any country that poses a threat is very dangerous, I am very glad that the UN is taking this to precaution and is acting against it without hesitation.

Last week, John Alleman, died of a heart attack. Alleman was the “unofficial spokesperson” for Heart Attack Grill, a restaurant located in Las Vegas. Heart Attack Grill is infamous for its unhealthy food. There are 10000 calorie burgers and fries covered in pure lard. If you weigh over 350 pounds, you can eat there for free. Not surprisingly, this has happened before. The first unofficial spokesperson died at the age of 29 two years ago.
This article is depressing because it shows man’s lack of willpower and care for himself. It saddens me knowing that there are people in this world who think so little of their health. Do people not realize that they are poisoning their bodies? Do they feel the lard run through their veins? Man is unable to see the consequences of their actions until it is too late. Man does not look into the future, he cares only for the present.

Police work to confirm if Dorner’s remains were found in torched cabin
By Miguel Marquez and Lateef Mungin, CNN
    http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/13/us/lapd-manhunt/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

Christopher Jordan Dorner was a member of the Los Angeles Police Department until his position was terminated. Dorner wrote a manifesto which is posted online. In his manifesto he threatens the lives of many people in the LAPD that he had worked with. His main concern in his manifesto is that his job was unfairly terminated. The US has been on a manhut for him for over six days and is still currently going on. The LAPD has offered protection for the families being mentioned in Dorner’s manifesto. Dorner is believed to be responsible for the death of several officers. Late Tuesday night, investigaters said “they found charred human remains within the ashes of the torched cabin.” The cabin was near Big Bear Lake. It is highly likely that these ashes may belong to Dorner. However, it may take days to evaluate the remains. It has not yet been able to be confirmed or denied if the ashes belong to Dorner.

I hope the remains can be identified soon, that way the manhunt can end. The families who were threatened can hopefully feel safe again. This must be a very traumatizing event for them. I am glad the LAPD is offering extra protection for these families. Since Dorner has access to weapons that could severely injure and kill people, I think everyone would feel safer if he is found. If the ashes are identified as Dorner’s, the manhut can finally end.

Cryosat spots Arctic sea-ice loss in autumn
    By Jonathan Amos
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-21437680

In the years 2010 to 2012 the thickness of ice in the poles during autumn months has gone down by a third of the thickness it was in 2003 to 2008. For winter months it has gone down 9% over the same period of time. In northern Greenland, northeast Svalbard and the Canadian archipelago lots of the thicker ice is disappearing. Most people would expect some major loss over the summer, but what people have come to find out is that there is still ice melting during the cold seasons.

I think that people should really try harder to stop global warming. People live in these places and but sitting around and doing nothing we aren’t helping them any. Some people think that it wouldn’t be so bad if the poles just disappeared because the people who currently live there could move. That’s true but what about the polar bears that cant just pack up and leave. If that doesn’t convince people to help then think about where all the ice would go after it melts. The oceans would overflow and flood all the coasts. Every one could avoid all of this if we just paid a little more attention.

Supplies headed to befouled cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico by Mark Morgenstien, Ben Brumfield, and Mike Pearson.
    CNN 2/13/13
    http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/13/travel/cruise-ship-fire/index.html?hpt=hp_c1

In this article they talked about how a Carnival cruise ship named the Triumph had an engine fire that caused the ship’s propulsion system to break, leaving it stranded. Most of the power on the ship was lost, and they were starting to run low on supplies like food and water. Also as the days passed the living conditions became worse and worse, some rooms were flooding a little, the air conditioning was broken, and the stabilization system was not working. Carnival has sent boats to pull the ship into port; they should arrive around 4:00 pm tomorrow. Carnival has canceled its other voyages, and is refunding not only those people but people aboard the Triumph. Carnival is also making arrangements for travel and places to stay for the passengers. This relates to world history because we have been talking a lot about sailing, and this is about sailing.
What caused the fire in the engine room? I think that the Bahamas and the Carnival people should work together to figure that out. Instead, since the ship is from the Bahamas, they have to do the investigation. I also think that Carnival is handling this very well, and that they are doing the right thing by canceling other voyages. Is everyone on the Triumph ok?

1/31/2013 Chinese Company Will Run Strategic Pakistani Port
    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/01/world/asia/chinese-firm-will-run-strategic-pakistani-port-at-gwadar.html?_r=0

Suicide bombers killed over eighty Pakistani civilians and press, who were there for the upcoming elections for the government of Pakistan. The people were innocent civilians, and as of now, 88 were killed and almost 400 were wounded by this terrible bombing in the two cities of Queatta and Islamabad. Earlier today, 12 people were killed in a bombing by a Baluch separatist group.

I think this is truly horrible, that a group of Pakistani citizens would try impede the progression of their own nation. Even so, it does say a lot about Pakistan itself. Unlike other nations where democratic and fair governing is the goal, if not the norm, Pakistan has only recently developed this new voting-for-government system. I hope that one day, the people of Pakistan will be able to freely vote without worrying about threats to their lives.

    What Pope Benedict Leaves Behind

    2/11/13
    http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2013/02/11/what-pope-benedict-leaves-behind/?hpt=wo_t3

This article is about Pope Benedict and how he is stepping down from being pope. He made this announcement this Monday. He is going to step down on February 28th, 2013. People think that he chose to resign because he is getting old and his body and mind are weakening. This is a significant event because he has been pope since 2005. No pope has ever chosen to resign since the 1400’s. People are worrying who is going to take over and be the next pope once Pope Benedict steps down. A “holy man” will most likely take Pope Benedicts spot because that is the characteristic that people want in a pope.

I was surprised that Pope Benedict is resigning because I have never heard of a pope that has resigned before. I respect his decision because if he feels as though he can no longer fulfill his duties as pope that he should step down so somebody that can fulfill the duties of a pope can take over. It was surprising because usually a new pope is chosen once the past pope dies. I am not catholic so this doesn’t affect me. We have studied some of the famous popes in history. This relates to that because we have read before about popes dying or losing power and having a new pope rule causing the religion to gain or lose power. Gaining a new pope will either make the Catholic Church stronger or weaker depending on how well the new pope will reign compared to Pope Benedict.

this article is about how the olympic committee decided with an unanimous vote to make wrestling not a sport in future olympics wrestling will be contested at the 2016 olympics in rio de janeiro but not in the 2020 olympics or in other future olympics they said it was because the Olympic committee wanted the Olympics to be more publicized and wanted more sports that younger people will want to watch making the games appear more youthful and fun wrestling is considered one of the oldest games in the olympics the only older sport being track and field

i think that this is a bad move by the olympic committee wrestling is a tradition and has been part of the olympics for a very long time now the olympic committee is trying to change tradition so that they will get more views the olympics is already one of the most watched events off all time last summer olympics in Beijing there was said to be four million views that is an amazing amount of of views making it the second most viewed event of all time so this is a bad idea

As the world watched the sport of wrestling being dropped from the Olympic roster, many were distraught. Because of all this criticism, IOC president Jacques Rogge will meet with the head of the wrestling’s governing body to discuss a way this can be changed. The people who were most upset about this decision were the United States, Russia and Iran. Wrestling has been an Olympic sport since the ancient Roman Olympics and many people do not want this to change. “We have agreed to meet at the first opportunity to have discussions.” Rogge said at a news conference regarding this issue. Wrestling remains on the program for the 2016 Olympics and we will have to wait and see about the 2020 ones.
I think that it is crazy that they decided to take away the sport of wrestling from the Olympics. Like the article said, wrestling has been a part of the Olympics since the ancient times and that should not change. It is one of the most intense and loved sports there so I actually have no clue why they decided to take it away. I guess that is just my opinion but I personally hope that they find a way to keep it.

Symptoms to both viruses include severe respiratory illness, fever, coughing and breathing difficulties.

Girl Banned From Her Class for Red Hair

    http://www.cnn.com/video/?hpt=hp_c4#/video/us/2013/02/14/pkg-red-hair-gets-girl-kicked-out-school.kutv

A teenage student recently got suspended because of her hair color. Riley McKay lives in Hurricane, Utah, and decided to dye her hair red. Despite all of the compliments she received going to school the next day, Riley got called to the principal's office. He told her that her red hair was against the school dress code and was too distracting. She was informed that she could either dye her hair back to brown, or not come back to school. Riley and her mother refused to dye it back, because her hair color was fairly normal and they didn't think it should be banned. After missing a couple days of school, Riley came back the next week and was welcomed back to Hurricane Middle School. The principal said he believed her hair looked "more normal" and the color had faded a little.

I was shocked to hear that a girl my age was suspended for the color of her hair. I would understand if it were neon or something, but I don't think the red in her hair is distracting at all. Riley was apparently banned from school because her hair looked "purplish", but she never used any purple to dye her hair. I find it ridiculous that a middle school was discriminating against an innocent girl. I'm glad they welcomed her back into school, and I hope this kind of situation doesn't happen again.

“UK arrests, French investigation in horse meat scandal”
    By Laura Smith-Spark
    CNN
    February 14, 2013
    http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/14/world/europe/uk-horse-meat-probe/index.html?hpt=wo_c2

Recently there has been an outbreak in cases reporting unapproved horse meat in the beef sold all across Europe, in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, other countries. Arrested from Farmbox Meats and Peter Boddy Slaughterhouse in Britain, three workers are facing prosecution, a fine of almost 200,000 euros, and prison for two years under the Fraud Act, yet it is France that is also examining a prominent case involving the French Spanghero firm. Supposedly, the firm should have known that what was being packaged, labeled, and sold was partly horse meat. However, both the firm and the horse meat seller claim that the horse meat was unknowingly put in the beef. Unfortunately, the outcry against the horse traces found is not just because people do not like horse meat. Phenylbutazone, a drug banned for human use in the United States for causing toxic outcomes in people, was found in eight of the horse corpses, meaning it could be in human food, although the levels are not toxic enough. The mislabeling is also an issue for those, such as Jews, whose religion does not permit eating horse. As a result of the situation, Europe will take steps to test beef products, and Europol, the law enforcement organization of the European Union, will look into whether there was any real fraud.

I think this article had a good amount of facts about the incidents and what will happen. Nevertheless, I did not really like the way the article was written, with some sentences quite short and others not connecting to the other sentences. Today was the first time I’ve heard of this incident in particular, but I do remember what happens when a sudden aberration in the selling of food occurs. Not directly like the horse meat incident, I remember when, a couple of years ago, people were worried about eating spinach and no one sold it or ate it for fear of a biological-something wrong with it. I myself have not ever really kept kosher, but I grew up with a friend who was much more kosher, and for her family to know they were eating horse meat would not settle nicely with them. I guess this is relatable to our studies because it is about food, which relates to the Columbian Exchange and the lack of food in winter at a British colonial settlement. How would you feel about eating horse meat?

This article sated that the Pope Benedict XVI age 85, stepped down from his role as Pope due to his age and pressures of being a religious leader. There was no specific decease or illness that forced him to retire, but he felt that he could no longer fulfill the demands that his position requires. The timing of this retirement was shocking, not only is he the only Pope since 1415 to retire, but very few people saw this news coming. He "decided to pull the plug now instead of waiting for disaster."

I think that the pressures of stepping down must have played a role in his decision, but I think that he should be able to do what he thinks is best, especially if he thinks that the office would be better served with someone else filling in his spot. I respect his decision and hope he finds peace with the rest of his life.

Police work to confirm if Dorner’s remains were found in torched cabin

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/13/us/lapd-manhunt/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

Christopher Jordan Dorner was with the LAPD until he lost his job. Dorner wrote a manifesto which is posted online. In his manifesto he threatens the lives of many people in the LAPD that he had worked with. His main concern in his manifesto is that his job was unfairly terminated. The US has been looking for him this last week. LAPD has promised protection for the families being mentioned in Dorner’s manifesto. Dorner is accused of killng sevearl officers. Late Tuesday night, investigaters said “they found charred human remains within the ashes of the torched cabin.” The cabin was near Big Bear Lake. It is highly likely that these ashes may belong to Dorner. However they wont know for some time.

I hope the remains are his and that this case can be put to a rest. Unfortunately though there is also a chance that the remains are of another victim. Even if he was unfairly fired that does not excuse him killing all of these innnocent people.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/pope-benedict-xvi-resigned-for-the-good-of-the-church-8493000.html -Pope Benedict XVI resigns
85 year old, Pope Benedict XVI, announced that he will be resigning for the “Good of the Church.” Benedict the first pope in 600 years to give up his papacy, will be breaking the tradition for being Pope until death. Benedict had previously been on record that Popes who struggle to do their jobs should be able to step down. Pope Benedict was pleased with the reactions of his audience when he delivered his shocking news. When the Pope steps down, a new one will be elected. The elections are expected to be in March, and the Church should have a new leader before Easter. In the complex election process, the cardinals of the Catholic Church will meet and elect a new pope. They will continuously vote until one candidate receives two thirds of the vote, making him the new Pope.
I was very surprised to hear that the Pope was resigning. I knew that he was in poor health, but a pope is supposed to be serving for life. It was especially surprising because a living Pope has not resigned in 600 years. Even though I was surprised, I think Pope Benedict has the right to resign, and that he did the correct thing. If one is not able to fulfill religious duties as the head of the Catholic Church because of weakness or disability, than it is the right thing to let someone else take control. This does not significantly affect me because I am Hindu, not Catholic. This relates to how we studied the Holy Roman Empire with the Pope ruling over religiously a few weeks ago. How will this impact the Catholic Church?

Fifteen year old Riley McKay was finally allowed to dye her hair red. She checked the school rules, mad e sure the colors were natural and went to the salon to dye her hair. When she went to school the next day she got loads of compliments! Everyone thought it was really cute, except the principal. He stated that “In the light, it looked pink or purple.” Pink and purple hair is not allowed by the school so they told her to fix it or not come back. Her and her mom thought this was ridiculous and stayed away from school till Monday morning. She was then welcomed back because apparently the pin had faded in the short four days she had been gone. The vice principal had put her on the spot that first day and made her cry and feel like a criminal. Even after an interview with CNN and Riley stressing that her feeling were hurt, the school stood by what they thought.
This is completely ridiculous. Riley’s hair was like auburn, not even red. How can someone stand there and make a 15 yr old cry because her hair wasn't the right color, and never even apologize? That is rude and must have been so embarrassing for Riley. I think the school should change that insane rule. It is completely stupid to prevent someone from getting an education because of the way the look.

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/14/us/illinois-same-sex/index.html?hpt=us_c2

In this article, Illnois has just recently passed the same-sex marriage law. With the vote being 21 against and 34 for it. With majority rule, the law was passed and given to the Governor, Pat Quinn to be approved. This makes Illinois the tenth state to sign and legalizing a same-sex marriage. Previously, Illnois didn't have a law due to the Protestors, but now because the protestors on each side have become rather equall the senate decided to vote. Due to the passing of this law, three other states have took into consideration to create such a law. Those states were Rhode Island, Delaware, and Hawaii.
In my opnion, I think its great that other states have started to come to relaization that marriage is not a privlage and is a right. I wish that our state could see that as well. I think that if enough states can see this then maybe other states will follow them and the law with be lifted off of our state or at least be modified. Two parts to the law, legalizing gay marriage and recognizing a gay marriage. If both of these things happen, I think our state would benefit a lot.

On Thursday February 14th pop warner football coach Chip Ross got a call saying that the star of his 11 year old football team couldn’t play for his team. His star Caroline Pia is an eleven year old girl who has played football since she was 5. She is five foot three and 110 pounds and larger than most guys in her league. The leagues reason for kicking her off the team is that girls need more protection than guys. Caroline is mad because she has hurt a fair bit of guys and hasn’t been hurt ever. They have arranged with the league for her to finish the season, but they don’t know what will happen after that.
I think the league is wrong in this situation and Caroline should be allowed to play if she’s ok with getting hurt. I don’t think girls need more protection than guys because I know some guys that are scared of girls. I hope they arrange a way for Caroline to play with her own age group. The worst thing about this all is that this is a catholic football league. If they really want to follow god’s teachings they should treat everyone equally.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/12/world/europe/with-popes-resignation-focus-shifts-to-a-successor.html?ref=benedictxvi&_r=0

    1. This article is focused on the recent resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, where Benedict indicated his plans to leave the papacy at the end of the month. The first pope to do so in six centuries, Benedict cited old age and ill health as his main reasons for resignation. Of course, there are also many issues plaguing the Catholic church at the time of Benedict’s resignation: the sexual abuse scandal, as well as a rise in both secularism and Protestantism. It is expected that the new pope will be less conservative than Benedict was, in an attempt to broaden the appeal and popularity of the Catholic church. There is also a certain tension in the demographic of the new pope, as 42% of Catholics come from Latin America and only 25% from Europe; however, most cardinals come from Europe.

    2. I found this article very interesting. I understand why the pope is resigning--having to watch the last pope become merely a figurehead as his health declined and he died a year younger than Benedict is now must have been an intimidating experience. It is, however, an interesting and somewhat controversial issue not only because of Catholicism’s value of tradition but because of the timing. Easter is the defining Christian holiday, and the turmoil that this change in the papacy will bring will certainly affect how many people celebrate. The new pope will have an important job to do: they will have to bridge groups of people and bring them together at a time when the Catholic church is not in a position of power.

People’s nightmares onboard the Carnival ship Triumph are soon to be over. The ship which was stranded in off of in the Gulf of Mexico because of an engine fire is supposed to port at around 11 P.M. Conditions on the ship have apparently been horrible. Toilets stopped working so when the ship would tilt the toilet would spill out and run down the hallway and into rooms. There were long lines for food and the food was cold. Currently the boat was being towed into a port in Mobile, Alabama. Carnival has set up options for the passengers once they get off the ship including hotel rooms in New Orleans, buses to the Houston, and flights to Galveston, Texas which was the original port. The passengers aboard the ship are apparently already lining up to get off the ship and officials estimate that it will take 3 to 4 hours to get the 1,500 passengers and crew off the ship.
I can’t believe that this happened. I feel bad for the passengers and I hope they will reunite with their families and have a good meal and long shower. I don’t understand why Carnival didn’t send another ship to transfer everybody on to. Hopefully, the passengers will get off safely and quickly.

I don't really follow the news on the pope but I feel that if he needs time to recover his health then he made the right decision by passing on the role in society to someone who is fit for the job. that is all.

Four days ago a cruise ship got stranded out in the ocean near Mobile, Alabama. The ship, called the Carnival Triumph, was stranded because of a fire that started inside the engine room. This fire caused the power to shut off with more than 4,000 people on the ship as well. The conditions on the boat for the past few days have been very filthy and waste filled. As the ship was pulling into a dock near Alabama a lot of the passengers have been putting their thoughts on what is happening on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

I think that what has happened was very out of the blue and unexpected. They have done a good job of coordinating rides. Also with making sure that when the boat finally gets docked everyone is able to get home safely an has some type of transportation to take them home. The conditions that they were having to live in for the past few days were probably really rough. However the boat is slowly traveling back to land and should be docked in the next 24 hours.

Pistorius Charged With Murder in Shooting of Girlfriend
    New York Times/ February 14, 2013
    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/15/sports/oscar-pistorius-shooting-south-africa.html?_r=0

In the 2012 Olympics, we watched olympian after olympian perform extraordinary feats of athleticism. However, there was one man who stood out from all the other athletes. Oscar Pistorius, the amputee from South Africa, is a Paralympic track star who decided he wanted to contest in the Olympics. He became an icon for all those who were disabled. Pistorius proved that you could achieve anything you strived for. So what did all of his followers think when they found out that he allegedly killed his girlfriend? Reeva Steenkamp, a model and aspiring actress, was found shot many times lying in a pool of blood in Pistorius's house. It was said that he, being a gun enthusiast, had accidentally shot Steenkamp thinking she was an intruder. South Africa is very unsafe and there are many crimes everyday. This supports his story somewhat. His hearing will be on Friday but he is currently in jail right now.
When I first heard the news, I was shocked because I had remembered him from the Olympics and had so much respect for what he did, not only in the Olympics but also being an inspiration to everyone. I hadn't known the full story so I lost full respect for him, thinking he murdered his girlfriend (which may or may not be true). But until his hearing, we won't truly know what happened and whether he'll continue to be a respectable image. This sort of corresponds with the whole guns issue. However, in South Africa, the conditions are not much like America. Everyday there is crime in South Africa. People are terrorized and are constantly threatened by different forces. Many people own guns but not for the pleasure of it. Guns need to be distributed carefully and only the most trained people should own them. However, South Africa's conditions make it hard to apply what we know about gun problems in America.

    Cruiseship Stuck at Sea

Recently the Carnival cruise ship triumph has lost all power in the engines and other important functions of the ship. For this reason the ship has been stranded at sea. As of recently tug boats have arrived on the scene of the stranded ship. As a result the food supply has been depleted. The only food being served is pretty much what the national guard brings and onion or salmon sandwiches. Another issue the ship is running into is the fact that even though the ship has stopped the passenger bowls haven’t. Human feces have begun to flow out of the rooms into the hallways. And begun to leak through into every level of the ship. Needless to say it’s a pretty horrible situation.
First off i just want to say yuck. Thats really gross. To be honest if I was on the ship I probably would have just jumped off and tried to swim for shore. I feel that there should be back up supplies of food and the ships should be able to handle scenarios like this one. At the end of the day this looks really bad for Carnival Cruise lines. For real there really screwed up. This event is on national television and i'm quite sure we’re gonna see a drop in their stock. I just hope the people on this ship make it home safe to their loved ones and take a shower.

This article describes the manor in which mechanical problems caused a Carnival cruise ship to be stranded, along with 3,000-4,000 passengers. The ship is now being towed by tugboats, and is supposed to arrive in Mobile, Alabama on Thursday night. An engine fire is what caused this, and conditions are far from ideal. There is no power on the ship, and what was supposed to be a luxury vacation has turned into a nightmare in the eyes of many passengers. Hotel rooms have been reserved for passengers in News Orleans and Galveston, Texas.

I feel very bad the passengers and staff of the ship. This is a very unfortunate event. Personally, I would not want to go on a cruise ship. They frighten me, because they are big and they travel in the middle of the ocean, and, of course, there is a possibility that things like this would happen. I truly hope that the people aboard return safely, even if their vacation did not end up being what they had imagined. This can be related to what we are learning about because we are learning about (or were learning about a few weeks ago) exploration. Explorers sailed on ships, and back then, they lived in very bad conditions while on the water. One question that came up for me while I read this article was how Carnival redeem themselves. They also had an accident that killed 32 people last year, so I'm wondering how they will recover from this latest error.

This delayed the cruise. Many people were displeased because the conditions were horrible. The passengers will be refunded and compensated for having to go through this terrible ordeal.

This is horrible. I have not been on a cruise before; and if this was what my first one was like, I definitely would not want to go on another one. The conditions were horrible. The crowded and disgusting conditions mixed with not fully knowing what is going on would have been horrible. It is good that the passengers will be refunded, but something like this should not have happened in the first place. This must have been scary and annoying for the passengers on the cruise.

Earlier this week President Obama bestowed the highest military award, The Medal of Honor. The president gave this award to Clinton Romesha, an army staff sergeant. Clinton Romesha was on patrol near the Keating combat outpost in Afghanistan, when over three hundred Taliban soldiers attacked his base. Romesha jumped into action and took out a machine gun nest; He also called in an air strike that killed 30 members of the Taliban. Clinton Romesha then went and recovered the bodies of his dead comrades while under fire. This is a very important event because it is important to recognize solders that go beyond the call of duty. He is also one of only four living people to receive the award while serving in Afghanistan.

This is a very important and patriotic event that should be remembered. It took a lot of courage to power through the adversity of the situation. I also think that it is very rare to find someone who is willing to give up their own life to preserve others. If I was put in this situation I don’t think I could not have done the same thing and be so willing to give up my own life. I think Romesha deserved his medal for being brave in the face of adversity.

MY article is about how the DMV is going to issue driving licenses to some illegal immigrants. Starting on march 25 some immigrants that were brought here illegally as children will have the opportunity to get their drivers licenses and get id cards. This decision was made to balance the rights of lawful citizens. You will only be able to get your license if you have insurance though. PEople that can provide documentation that they qualify for a NC drivers license will receive a drivers license that has a expiration date that coincides with their deferred-action status.

I think that this is a very good idea. If people come here illegally and if they can afford it then they are going to get a car and drive even if they have their license or not. This new decision will make our roads a whole lot safer too. Also its good to set a good example to people that are new to this country and to welcome them with open arms. We should make it possible for people to live "the american dream".

    1. On February 11, the Pope Benedict XIV announced that he would resign on February 28, 2013. The pope is the head of the Catholic Church who lives in the Vatican.

Scientists have been inspired to continue research on meteroids that could be headed this way. They’ve seen an astroid headed towards planet earth about 45 meters long but it shouldn’t come no more than 17,100 miles to our planet’s surface according to the scientists.

If they can be accurate that the astroid is not coming inside of the earth then we as citizens have no reason to fear. Right now it’s only a prediction that the earth will not be hit with this astroid but accuracy never hurt anybody and that’s what we citizens need.

km (950 miles) east of Moscow.
    2. i think that this article is both tragic and cool. it is cool because scientist can study the pieces of meteorite that are now on Earth. it is tragic because 500 people were hurt. i really hope nobody was severely injured, mentally impaired, or killed.

    CNN / February 15, 2013
    http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/15/travel/cruise-ship-fire/index.html?hpt=wo_c2

A cruise ship called the Triumph was three days into a four day long trip when a fire broke out in the engine room. This fire left the vessel with no propulsion, listing to the side, and drifting in the Gulf of Mexico currents. There were also power outages, which caused the conditions for the 3,200 passengers and 1,100 on board the ship to go from bad to worse. There were many toilets out of order, water shortages, and widespread boredom. Many of the passengers had to sleep in the hallways or outside to escape the smell and heat of the lower decks. Carnival cruise line said that it will give each passenger a free flight home, $500, a full refund on their trip, and another cruise.

In my opinion, I think that these complications aboard the Triumph will hurt Carnival cruise line. People will get the impression that Carnival ships are not to be trusted and can easily break down. I also think that the people aboard the Triumph will not be taking another cruise anytime soon. I do like how the Carnival cruise line promised a lot of free things for the passengers though. That should help Carnival not be hurt as bad, right?

    Current Event

Today I read an article titled Carnival Triumph passengers disembark in Alabama, published on the BBC News website February 15th.
What was supposed to be a luxurious vacation for about 4,000 people turned into a nightmare when an on deck engine fire resulted in a loss of power on their cruise ship, the Carnival Triumph. The conditions onboard drastically declined each day they were afloat. Sewage polluted the decks, while its less than appealing stench was unbearable. There was a shortage of supplies resulting in many undernourished passengers. The Carnival Triumph was pulled 30 miles to shore where many people waited to welcome the passengers back to land. Passengers were driven by bus to 1,500 complimentary hotel rooms were waiting for them. Passengers aboard this ship were refunded in full and given discounts on future cruises.
I think that this incident is particularly unfortunate. People go on a cruise to escape their stress and fast paced lives into a fantasy world where they feel and are treated like royalty. What these passengers received was far from royalty. The conditions they suffered through was terrible. Also, it is peculiar that Carnival Corp, the owner of this ship, was also the owner of the cruise ship that shipwrecked off the coast of Italy, killing thirty-two people. I believe that this corporation should be investigated to prevent further incidents.

The Council said they would take "significant action" if the northerners test nuclear weapons again. It is not just the U.N. Security Council, but around the entire globe the testing drew condemnation from many countries and groups. This is the first nuclear test that the new leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, carried out. The young predecessor of Kim Jong Il seems to be sticking to his father's idea of increasing the amount of their weapons and ignoring unblessing of other nations.

This man is Christopher Speight, a 42 year old former security guard. Speight was also charged for shooting down a police helicopter, along with three counts of capital murder, one count of attempted capital murder of a police officer, and five firearm counts. He was arrested for his crimes in 2010, but just recently admitted to his crimes.

I think this is a very disturbed man. I don't know what could possibly make someone kill another human being. It is even more despicable in this case because he killed his own sister and children. It is good that he admitted his crime though, so now he can spend the rest of his life in jail.

North Korea, which has technically been at war with South Korea and the United States since the end of the Korean War in 1953, has just told China that it is preparing to perform two nuclear tests this year to force the United States into peace talks. There are U.N. sanctions against the country due to previous nuclear tests, and more are being considered. President Obama has promised to take the lead in responding to North Korea's threats.
People in many countries are worried about the implications of North Korea having nuclear weapons; they could threaten the entire world. Nobody knows exactly what technology they have developed (reports could be underestimated or exaggerated). I have no idea of what they can or can not do, but it seems to me that we shouldn't overestimate North Korea because it depends on other countries for aid that includes food, fuel, and medical care.

The Triumph is a Carnival cruise liner that lost power after a contained fire in the engine room. The Passengers were trapped there for days. People with rooms above deck mostly chilled and were bored, but the people who had rooms in the lower decks had a nightmare. The sewage didn’t work and neither did electricity. People slept in hallways and tried to avoid the overflowing toilets and awful stench. The Triumph was on its third day in a four day cruise when the fire took out all the power, leaving the Triumph drifting in the Gulf of Mexico. The last of the passengers got off the Triumph Friday morning. Carnival Cruises reimbursed all the passengers and gave them $500, another ticket for a cruise, and transportation home. One thing that kept a smile on that cruise was the crew. Many passengers claimed that even though the conditions were bad, the crew did all they could to make it more comfortable.

Carnival Cruises have had more than one breakdown. In 2010 they had a fire on the Splendor. That also left a ship drifting. If Carnival Cruises has another breakdown, I don’t think it’ll survive. A single breakdown is enough bad publicity, but a two…that’s just too much. Imagine if it happened again. What are the chances of it surviving that blow? Would you want to cruise with a company that has had multiple troubles in the past? I know I wouldn’t. So if the Carnival has another trip with unsmooth sailing, it would be beyond troubling to the company.

In the Urals region in Russia a meteor streaked on Friday morning. It eventually exploded and the sound it made shattered glass and left around 1,00 people injured. The shock waves caused by the blast damaged about 3,000 buildings. The damage to most buildings was shattered glass. The explosion of the meteorite occurred at about 9:20 in the morning. Scientist had not foreseen this meteorite and if they did then they did not tell anybody about it. It is possible that the scientist did not see the meteorite though because meteoroids are hard to spot because they are smaller than asteroids and comets.

The meteorite did cause quite some damage and it would be great if this could become something that did not happen anymore. However it is very hard to spot these meteorites so it would hard to make sure things like this do not happen. One thing that some scientists are considering is to create a sentry line of spacecraft that circle around the earth so that they can either intercept or evaluate the incoming threats. If this is a possibility that could actually work then I think this would be a great solution to the problem. Overall, I do think that things need to be done so that these types of events do not happen again.

After long speculation, the concept of a see-through phone may be on the list for production in the near future. Chinese-based Polytron Technologies is developing a fully transparent cell phone, except for batteries and microSD card. It uses a new kind of pixels called OLED, that uses liquid crystal molecules to display images. Both sides are useable as a screen, which opens up new possibilities in OS and BiOS interfaces. The devices may hit the markets in late 2013.
I think this is very cool, since transparent cell phones have been in Hollywood movies since forever. In a few years, and if this is successful, transparent cell phones could be the norm. Also, a double useable phone with two screens you can touch could revolutionize operation systems forever. The problem is, if the display and capabilities aren’t anything special, the novelty value of the phone might not be enough to make people buy them. But I hope they can put this phone on the market, because it would be really cool to see a transparent cell phone.

Title: News in Brief: Diversity breeds disease resistance in frogs

    Source: sciencenews.org
    URL: http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/348284/description/News_in_Brief_Diversity_breeds_disease_resistance_in_frogs

Studies have shown that the more diversity in an ecosystem, the better the ecosystem is at fighting off diseases. Pieter Johnson of the University of Colorado Boulder and colleagues studies hundreds of ponds in California for various species of frogs with limb deformities. The limb deformities are caused by a virulent parasite called Ribeiroia ondatrae. It was found that frog species that are susceptible to the parasite dominated in low-diversity ponds, whereas the species that were more resistant lived in ponds with high diversity. It was also found that newcomers to ecosystems are typically less susceptible, thus cutting down on transmission even more. But this statement is not always true. So the general trend is that more diverse ecosystems are not as impacted by diseases as less diverse ecosystems.

This research seems to have provided some very valuable information. Higher diversity could be the key to cutting down on infectious diseases in farms all around the world. If these disease outbreaks are controlled, maybe humans will not contract them as well. With a natural solution like diversity, humans would not have to use medications so often because outbreaks would be cut down. This also means that the evolution of a drug-resistant virus or bacteria is less likely. The only question I have is how are people going to apply this knowledge to make it useful to humans?

Peru archaeologists find ancient temple in El Paraiso

Archeologists in Peru have discovered an ancient temple near Lima, the capital. This temple could be as much as 5,000 years old. The temple is large, (22ft by 26ft), and thought to be from the Late Pre-ceramic Age. A hearth was discovered inside, which has clued archeologists in to the characteristics of the civilization that created this site. Apparently, fire was important. The hearth might have been used to burn offerings to the gods. Excitingly, experts say that there may be thousands more undiscovered ruins left in Peru.

Honestly, I selected this article because of the recent unit we had done. I also like the name "Lima". Is it pronounced like the bean? Ok, back on track. I am glad I did select this article, as it was interesting and informative. I knew, of course, that we had not found all the ancient buildings there were to find. However, I had no idea there could be so many sights left undiscovered. This is really good. We could learn a lot about these ancient cultures through their architecture, and there is a lot more of it out there. All I can say is, "Start digging."

Ever since man created the idea of pets, cats have been placed into two categories; feral and domestic. Until now domestic cats have been thought of as kind, gentle creatures. According to studies led by Peter Marra that is simply not the case. Each year billions upon billions of birds and mammals are killed by cats, and a third of those killings are from domestic cats. These constant murders are mostly a threat to the bird population as well as any small native species. One solution is to diminish the cat population, nonviolently of course. TNR is a way of making that happen; however, it isn’t easy and requires more work than it’s worth. Oral contraceptives are another idea to reduce the number of wild cats. As for domestic cats Gareth Morgan recommends that owners keep tabs on their pets. The less time the cats are outside, the less time they have to kill.

Whilst scrolling through national geographic I came upon this article and was attracted by it’s heading. Looking more in depth I realized that this is an issue that people everywhere face daily. I can relate to having cats in the neighborhood (domestic and feral) that kill small animals. The article did a very good job of explaining the problem, providing solutions, and announcing a call to action. I liked the setup, although it could have been worded better in certain parts. This relates to ecosystems and the effects of one species on others. My question is; what about the dogs?

19 men were recently arrested in the northern region of South Africa due to being involved in the plotting of a coup of the Congolese government. They had been in Africa to get military training in order to carry out the coup. The government of Congo has accused M23 of the plot. M23 is a rebel group situated in the Congo's North Kivu province. The men had been planning to carry out attacks on Congolese officials located in South Africa so as to support the long term goal of toppling the current government.

I believe that the fact that this coup was stopped is a good thing. The state of the Congo is already extremely terrible as it is with all the rebel and military groups rampaging through the country, stealing and destroying as they go. The introduction of a completely new government would only serve to make things more complicated and chaotic than they already are. I think that there should be some sort of change in the DRC's government, but a forced revolution is certainly not what it needs at the moment. I do think that some more light should be spread on the conflicts in Congo as it seems to be left out of modern political discussion despite the terrible state the country is in right now.

Cynthia Osokogu was a young model who was the daughter of a general. She was making a name for herself with her own fashion boutique and had graduated from grad school not a long time ago. She had travelled to Lagos for merchandise for her store, but was killed during her time there. Cynthia had made plans to meet some sellers after chatting with them on facebook for a period of time. The ‘sellers’ offered to pay for her flight and hotel, so she took the offer and met them at the hotel, where she was drugged and killed. These men have been identified and they will be put to trial for this murder. This current event is significant to world history because it deals with the evolution of criminal law and the ways the punishments have evolved.

My opinion on this article is that I thought that cynthia was being a little too careless. While this terrible thing that happened to her was all the fault of her facebook stalkers, she could have been a little more cautious. I would think that she would have experienced this stalking and untruthful people being a model and having that kind of attention pointed to her. This makes me rethink the safety of facebook, even though I know that the internet was not safe at all. I thought that facebook had certain security measures that was applied to everyone’s account. This makes me more cautious of friend requests from people I do not know. My personal experience about the internet and shady characters is about a website I made when I was in 3rd grade. It was a blog and I put random facts on it and there was a chat option with it. Someone claimed to be someone I knew and asked me to give them my information. I checked with the person that they claimed to be and they said they did not know I had a blog so I stopped chatting with the person. This experience was scary to me and my mom freaked out so I understood the security of the internet was not very stable.

The Carnival Triumph cruise ship finally docked today. It had to be tugged to shore by tugboats. The ship had severe technical difficulties after a fire in the engine room. Most of the ship lost power and the plumbing malfunctioned. Due to the power loss, there was also no refrigerated foods. The crew tried their best to help the passengers. However, the passengers had very little food and had to wait in long lines for water. The cause of the engine room fire is unknown and it will take eight to twelve months to investigate all possibilities.

I think this story was very interesting. I have never been on a cruise before and I think this will definitely impact my view of them. The fact that you are completely isolated with no where to go is scary. The passengers are lucky that the fire didn't spread and cause more problems. I think Carnival is right to give them so much compensation for the horrible time that the passengers had. I think the crew did a great job in helping all the passengers to be comfortable. Hopefully, most people are not too harmed by the experience.

After the first discovery, many more have been made all across Europe of horse meat.
I think this is horrible, and I have a personal connection because I used to eat at school, now i bring my own lunch. It's scary not knowing what you are actually eating. It's also really sad that suppliers are actually claiming the meat to be beef, and according to the article, horse meat was found all over Europe so it wasn't just a small thing. Many of the parents or buyers are probably very upset and I would understand why, they bought specific products, not horse meat.

This once in 100 year phenomenon injured at least 1000 people- hundreds of them being children. The injuries are said to be minor, as the effect was caused by windows and glass breaking due to the powerful sound waves the meteor produced. Thousands of emergency response workers were deployed. This event is also within days of an asteroid coming several thousands of miles close to Earth. These events affect us and history immensely because of the reactions that they cause and how they ultimately affect our society and Earth.

Wooow, I really wish I had been there. A meteor crashing into Earth like that, in a very populated area, it’s not something that happens often. I hold fascination with astronomy and the way outside things in space connect to Earth, and this is a really big deal for scientists and it’s just overall really amazing and interesting. The sad things is that if this happens in a city area, then many people get injured, like those in Russia. And 1000 people too, that’s crazy. Such a piece of rock that seems small in space has such a massive impact on Earth. In any case, I really do wish that one day I can be able to witness an event like this on, even if it means I could get minorly injured (because it’s a once in a lifetime thing, so I couldn’t complain too much). After this test, which has proved that North Korea has working nuclear weapons; I think that North Korea may become a possible threat in the future. If North Korea continues on this path of creating these nuclear weapons, the world may put in a motion to end this. They would take the necessary measures to make sure North Korea stops the progression of their nuclear weapons. If it appears that this isolated country will not respond well to the actions of the diplomats and continue the nuclear testing, negotiations will become hard to make. Basically I think that Kim Jong Un will be following the path of his father and because of that, North Korea will not change its restricting ways and preventative measures may have to be taken in the future.

Pope resigns, saying no longer has strength to fulfill ministry
    http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSBRE91A0A120130211?irpc=932

Earlier this week, Pope Benedict announced that he was resigning. This is a huge deal because this has not happened since the 1400s. No one is currently sure of his reasoning but some believe it to be his poor health. Many people are upset at this choice, because everyone loved him as a pope.
    2) when we study history the pope is a very popular topic to talk about. He has always been very influential through out European history. I can understand why people would be upset about him resigning but I also think he is doing the right thing by taking care of his health and enjoying his later years. And I am quite certain the next pope we get will do a great job.

Russian Meteor Blast Injures at least 1,000 people, Authorities Say
By Phil Black, Boriana Milanova and Laura Smith-Spark

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/15/world/europe/russia-meteor-shower/index.html?hpt=hp_c1
    Feb. 15, CNN

This morning in Russia, a meteor was spotted flying through the sky. It exploded, shattering the glass in many buildings and injuring around a thousand people. NASA qualified this as a tiny meteor, but the blast was still equal to the force of 300,000 tons of dynamite exploding simultaneously. Many Russians caught the meteor on camera, because dashboard cameras in cars are popular, due to the police’s reputation for corruption. The meteor broke up into several smaller pieces before detonating, and if it had not the blast would be even larger. Though hundreds of people were injured due to this, only 34 were hospitalized.
I think that this is an interesting article because it shows an ironic aspect of our society. Technology is so prevalent that it is common for the average Russian driver to have a camera on their dashboard, but there was no warning in regard to this meteor’s arrival or detonation. I am glad that so few people were seriously injured, but it is still disconcerting to me that in such a technologically advanced age, we still don’t have the surveillance out there to know when a meteor is going to make it through the earth’s atmosphere. Ideally, this will prompt officials in governments internationally to increase surveillance on our skies.

Korea has been testing nuclear weapons recently, much to the dismay of many countries around the world. The ruler, who has followed in his fathers footsteps, does not appear to believe in the approval of other countries. After the first nuclear test china, one of North Koreas allies began to back away from the situation while the is fully condemned the testing. North Korea specifically announced that they were preparing weapons that would be in full range of the US, to which the UN and US addressed in statements condemning future tests. However, North Korea tested a third time two days ago, in direct violation of other countries requests. As you can imagine this is a precarious situation, one where our country must diffuse the situation when faced with an unstable adversary.

Tank Storing Radioactive Waste Leaking in Washington, CNN Staff

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/15/us/washington-tank-leak/index.html?hpt=hp_t3

At the Hanford Nuclear Reservation located in southeast Washington, a tank was leaking 150-300 gallons per year in radioactive sludge since 2005; according to the Governor Jay Inslee on Friday. According to the governor, the radioactive particles may damage groundwater and surrounding lands, including the Columbia River. Although it will not be of a health risk at once, he stated that it will be a long term problem in the state of Washington, potentially leaking into the local waterways. Built in the 1940’s, the tank, as well as 149 others, holds hundred thousands of radioactive sludge in the Hanford site; a location in charge for the nuclear cleanups. A meeting is planned to be held next week with the Energy Secretary in discussion of this situation.
This is part of a major issue in the controversy of a suitable method to store radioactive waste from past experiments and usage. As an element with a half-life, it tends to take many years for nuclear waste to become stable. Before then, the method of storage is crucial. By reading this article, it seems to portray the need to replace old storage tanks with new tanks, as shown in the fact that the tank is around seventy years old; in order to prevent corrosion of metal, and potentially a leak. The education of proper radioactive waste storage was taught through educational material I have read and watched; noting that radioactive material should never be placed in a landfill, and always within a stabilizing container under many layers of metal. With the many nuclear generators in the world, how would improper management of radioactive wastes make an impact on the environment, humans, and life in general?

Meteorite explodes over Russia, more than 1,000 injured
    Andrey Kuzmin

My article is about the meteorite that flew across in Russia. According to witnesses, they heard a loud explosion noise, saw a bright light, and heard a shock wave. The witnesses were all mostly driving to work, while it was dark. The meteor is thought to have been made of iron, and entering the atmosphere at 10 metric tons and broke apart only 19-31 feet above the ground! The interior ministry concludes that there were about 1,200 injuries, at least 200 of them being children. Many were injured by shards of glass. In all, the meteorite caused about $30 million in damage, in windows broken, and apartments and buildings damaged.

If this happened here, I would be very frightened. I would also hope that we would be prepared in the least, because that would be very dangerous because we have many buildings and cars here. My question is how could we prepare for an incident like this?

85 year old, Pope Benedict XVI, announced that he will be resigning. Benedict the first pope in 600 years to give up his papacy, will be breaking the tradition for being Pope until death. Benedict had previously been on record that Popes who struggle to do their jobs should be able to step down. Pope Benedict was pleased with the reactions of his audience when he delivered his shocking news. A new Pope will be elected. The elections are expected to be in March, and the Church should have a new leader before Easter. The kind of candidate they are looking for in the next pope is a “holy man”, which is what they normally look for in a pope.

I’m surprised to hear he is resigning. It’s shocking. I don’t believe it’s a bad thing because it’s never bad to experience something new. I hope the next pope will be a great person. This does somewhat relate to what we’ve been learning in world history. We’ve discussed Christianity and the spread of it and the role of the Church. As well as the role of the Pope. The influences made by the rule of the Church and Pope is basically half of our lesson.

This Friday, a meteor fell to earth hitting Russia. The meteor itself did not directly injure or harm people, but its powerful blast injured 1000 people. The blast damaged buildings in areas near to where it crashed. The meteor crashed through the sky at around 9:20 am, then it burst into a fireball. The largest affected region was Chelyabinsk, where the shock burst windows, glass, blew over doors, and set off car alarms. People living in the area described the incidence as a large flare bomb.
I think this event is so cool. I do hope no one was seriously injured. I think if I had seen the meteor I would initially be scared. But if the meteor did not affect me very negatively then I would love to see one! It would be a once in a lifetime experience to see something like this, and pretty cool unless it hurt me or anyone else.

The article that I read was about the progress the Latino community is making in Los Angeles, and what has recently happened there. The article specifically talked about how the illegal immigrants are slowly gaining their rights to vote, and in other things as well. It also focused on how the Latino population is gaining a foothold within their communities. They now also make up a large portion of the different ethnic groups seen in the area. The article I read included several interview quotes talking about how the Latino immigrants can no longer be ignored, and other residents in the Los Angeles area have changed their opinions on the subject.
I think that the article was well written, and provided a lot of information regarding the topic of modern immigration. It was unbiased, and did not include any opinion related quotes. Being Latino myself, I think that this news is a great step forward for the racial minorities in this country, and how we are represented. I am also glad that the changes are spreading across the country, and hopefully the racial discrimination against minorities will come to an end.

1.Four days ago a cruise ship got stranded out in the ocean near Mobile, Alabama.
    2. I think that what has happened was very out of the blue and unexpected. They have done a good job of coordinating rides. Also with making sure that when the boat finally gets docked everyone is able to get home safely an has some type of transportation to take them home. The conditions that they were having to live in for the past few days were probably really rough. However the boat is slowly traveling back to land and should be docked in the next 24 hours.

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/16/us/florida-python-hunt/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

    Summary:
Burmese pythons, snakes that can get up to lengths of 18 feet, were hunted over a few weeks. The hunt took place in the Everglades, where these deadly pythons have been killing foxes and deer. The hunt for these snakes drew around 1,600 residents. The residents were interested in the prizes, with the top ones being 1,500 dollars. Although only 68 of the thousands of these pythons were killed, the Wildlife Conservation was pleased because the hunt spread awareness. The pythons were first spotted in that area around 1979.

    Reflection:
Many people think that we, as people, should let nature run its course and not interfere with animals. However, I think that what is going on right now is for a good cause. This snake is killing rabbits and deer, and the snake doesn’t even have a predator. Also, the pythons are growing at a rapid rate, which is not a good sign for anything else currently residing in the Everglades. All in all, I think the competition was a good idea and I wouldn’t be surprised if they hosted another one.

Russia got an unpleasant surprise Friday morning when a tiny asteroid entered the atmosphere and fragments struck buildings and injured at least 1,000 people. It hit mostly Russia’s Urals region, and it was a once-in-100-years-event. The list of the injured included over 200 children. About 3,000 buildings were damaged, and many Russian civilians captured the event with cameras and phones.

I think this was an extremely unlucky incident. The chances of being injured by space rock are miniscule, and there’s really not much people can do to prevent this. Sometimes we forget that there’s even more outside of our own planet, and then that just comes back to slap us in the face. This isn’t really the only time Russia has had some asteroid accidents. As for people believing that this is a sign of the apocalypse, I say stop. Go cry, we had some space rocks land on Earth. Big deal, this kind of stuff has happened before.

    1. One of the biggest shocks the world has even seen happened on February 11. Pope Benedict XIV told the would that he would resign from being the Pope. The pope is the head of the Catholic Church who lives in the Vatican. Pope Benedict, who is 85 years old, said he has been battling many illnesses. That is what he says has made him step down from his Pope job. This shocked the world because it is the first time in 600 years that the pope has stepped down. The last pope died at the age of 84 and the pope is 85 now so he is getting to the point that he might pass away soon. The hope that they will be able to find the pope to take his place by Easter.
    2. I was shocked when I first heard that the pope was going to step down. The first time that I heard about it I was listening to the radio and they began to talk about how people where going to go crazy. That might happen to many people! The pope should stay the pope for life so him stepping down will make people go crazy. They also talked about on the radio that he would never be looked at the same as a great pope because he stepped down. I hope that they find a good person that people will like to replace him!

In a contest ranging from january to February, contestants were asked to find and kill as many burmese pythons as possible in the everglades. These snakes are a huge invasive species. They can range from six feet to up to sixteen feet. Although it was a month long challenge that harbored one thousand and six hundred participants, only 68 pythons were found. People estimate that there may be close to 100000 pythons in the area.

I am surprised that only 68 pythons were caught. The contestants scanned an area of a million acres. There should have been considerably more sightings and killings of the python, unless it is extremely elusive. I think these kind of events are good as long as they are targeting very disruptive invasive creatures, the python is one, in Australia the invasive species that causes the most damage is the Cane toad. Invasive species can disrupt entire ecosystems.

I think that it's interesting that this has happened because this is the first time that I have heard of a meteor actually causing damage within an area. It also shows how damaging they can be, due to the fact that this one was also only classified as a small meteor. It is also interesting about the amount of footage that was collected from it, due to people trying to prevent corruption.

Eight masked thieves stole $50 million in rough and polished diamonds in a lightning-fast heist Monday at Brussels Airport. In just 3 minutes, they stole a large sum of diamonds, and left the scene only a few minutes later. The 8 thieves arrived in two cars, breached the airport periphery and sped to the airplane. They then removed items from the hold before leaping back into their vehicles to escape through the same breach. They were heavily armed, but no shots were fired.
I think this is really interesting because this is something that you would expect to see in the movies. 8 guys pulling off a extremely well executed heist and stealing millions of dollars worth in diamonds or gold. This is very similar to the movies The Italian Job or Tower Heist. The robbery was very precise and almost military-organized, meaning there were little to no mistakes. On average, the Antwerp World Diamond Centre has $200 million in stones coming in and out daily.

Lake Tahoe, a huge tourist attraction in California, consists of clear waters that hold a wide variety of life. One of those species is a non-native goldfish. It is believed to have been released into the lake by residents who owned pet goldfish. Another theory is that fisherman who use goldfish as bait dumped them into the water. Whatever the cause, the result was enormous fish. The goldfish are growing in size and number, and could soon be a threat to the ecosystem surrounding them.

My grandfather had some monstrous goldfish in his backyard, and I think they are pretty neat. I can see why they could be a problem to the ecosystem, putting out too much waste and eating too much food. The fact that they grew so much also proves the theory of evolution. My question is, who will they eat first?

    Pope Benedict XVI's resignation explained
    by: Susannah Cullinane, Feb 12

Pope Benedict XVI resigned from his post as pope on February 11, 2013. He said that he would officially leave at the end of February. No one knew why at the time, but Benedict soon gave his reasons. In his speech, Benedisct stated that "my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry." The former pope's decision was not of any "external pressure". It was entirely his own choice. Some people think that Benedict might be in poor health. He will officially not be pope anymore at 8pm on February 28, 2013. It's the first time a pope has resigned since 600 years ago.

I think it's rather weird that the pope has resigned. Since it's the first time a pope has resigned in nearly 600 years, people are going to investigate. Even though the pope gave his reasons, many people suspect he might be hiding something. I don't think that the pope is hiding something, he may just be in poor health. Still, it has been 600 years. Way to break a record there, Benedict.

Recently the Carnival cruise ship triumph has lost all power in the engines and other important functions of the ship. The ship has been stranded at sea. As of recently, tug boats have arrived on the scene of the stranded ship. As a result, the food supply has been depleted. The only food being served is what the national guard brings and onion or salmon sandwiches. Another issue the ship is running into is that humans need to go, but there is nowhere for their "waste" to go. Human feces have begun to flow out of the rooms into the hallways. And begun to leak through into every level of the ship.
That's really gross. To be honest if I was on the ship I probably would have just jumped off and tried to swim for shore. I feel that there should be back up supplies of food and the ships should be able to handle scenarios like this one. This looks really bad for Carnival Cruise lines. This event is on national television and I'm quite sure we’re gonna see a drop in their business. I just hope the people on this ship make it home safe to their loved ones.

Title/author: Cardinals Pick Bergoglio, Who Will Be Pope Francis by Rachel Donadio
    Source/date: New York Times March 13, 2013
    URL: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/14/world/europe/cardinals-elect-new-pope.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

A puff of white smoke from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel shows that a pope has been elected. The pope's real name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio but he will be called pope Francis. they chose the cardinal from Argentina which makes him the first South American to be pope. This whole thing was taking place in the Vatican City. The article is mostly explaining what happened after the election and explaining the pope's life.

I think they made a good choice about the pope. Since the pope is from the americas where the majority of Catholics are, he will be a good influence to them.
I personally was not there and I don't know anybody who was but i say a lot on the news and heard about it on a the radio. And i do know a lot of people that were happy about the decision. I don't have any questions excel will he be able to handle it.

Northeast Asia Missile Threat Grows/Jethro Mullen

This article is all about the rising missile threat that North Korea poses to the world. Recently North Korea has been increasing their missile program, which is very dangerous to our society. North Korea’s missile program would be very important to them when they choose to start another war. This program consists of ballistic missiles, which are currently being prepped for a test launch. These missiles are located on the east coast of North Korea.

I think that this is a terrible thing, because instead of working on a project to improve living conditions in North Korea, the government instead wants to work on more war projects. Also these missiles will increase the chances that North Korea will engage in future war, because they feel more confident about their war machine. However, I also believe that this is a sad thing, because they have no chance of combating all of their enemies with those missiles, as they seem to be enemies with a large portion of the world. I feel like it would be in better interests for not only the civilians, but also their leader to work on non war projects. This being because they would maybe be engaged in more friendly relationships around the world.
