Buffet bets big on blue, buying 5.6% of IBM for $10.7B WRAL 11/14/11

A first for him, Warren Buffet bought 5.6% of IBM for $10.7B on Monday this week. He has never invested in a technology company before but believes that his plan for IBM will make a lot of money for IBM as a company. The companys’ stocks have already risen since Buffet bought the company, showing promise for this new development. The company employs over 10,000 people in North Carolina alone, being very beneficial to our states’ economy. IBM has a plan to make $100 Billion in the next four years with the majority of the earnings going to shareholders. IBM also recently named its first female CEO in the companies vast 100 year history. Some of the big moneymakers that IBM plans on drawing from are cloud computing, estimated to make $7 Billion by 2015, and Analytics software which is projected to make $16 Billion in sales by 2015.

I think that this is a step forward for IBM as a company and for North Carolina jobs. If IBM makes the earnings it expects ($100 Billion by 2015), then the company will have a surplus of money and could provide more jobs for not just North Carolina but the United States as a whole. My parents also own some stock in IBM, so the $20 increase in each shares’ value will be good. I think this will end up being beneficial for the US, NC and IBM as well because of the surplus earnings which will pull the stocks up and create more jobs. In this recession, with such a scarcity of jobs, any increase in the avaliable amount of jobs is a welcome change.

Cities Struggling to Deal with Occupy Movement/CNN Wire Staff
    Mon November 14, 2011
    http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/14/us/occupy-movement/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

Oakland, California police, aided by other officers, attempted to stamp out the Occupy Movement. The police arrived at their camp and tore down tents and arrested 32 protesters, as leaders had stated that the movement has become a threat to society. Mayor Jean Quan stated “the camp had become an unbearable drain on city resources, an economic threat to nearby businesses and a danger to public safety.” This disturbance is the latest action cities official have taken to minimize the efforts of the Occupy Movement. In Philadelphia, Mayor Michael Nutter agreed that the Movement was causing a threat to public safety and public health. Nutter provided convincing arguments about the Occupy Philly Movement. Several good points included a sexual assault in the encampment; threat of fire; and providing a potential hazard to workers at a high time of unemployment.

I do not know much about the Occupy Movement that had spread to numerous cities. All I can say is that the city officials have the right to sever any flaws that harms their citizens. In a way, I think it’s particularly their fault; if they had not alerted the officials to their negative effects on the economy, then they would not have been attacked. Based on my previous knowledge of the last Current Event, the people that make up the Occupy Movement are protesting against the unequal distribution of wealth. In Philadelphia, Major Michael Nutter said that the protestors were endangering the jobs of 1,000 people during high unemployment. I find this to be a little ironic, but I am not sure if the protestors were aware of this situation they placed themselves in. My greatest concern is how far the Occupy Movement will go and the drastic measures the city officials dare to take.

CL&P Overbills Elderly Berlin Man $12,000 Over 10 Years
    CNN, 11/12/11
    http://www.ctnow.com/lifestyle/live-smart/hc-bottom-line-clp-overcharge-20111112,0,6573167.column?page=1

A 73 year old man, Tony Santaro, found out that he has been paid over $12,000 to Connecticut Light and Power, a company that has used more than $65 million just for customer-service improvement. Tony lives in a condo, by himself. He is at work everyday from 7:30 each morning and comes back at 4 in the afternoon. He doesn’t cook, he uses his microwave oven about once a day. His monthly electric bill ranged from $160 to $240 during the summer and winter. Tony thought it was impossible for him to pay that much money with a condo that’s empty mostly during the day and with only one person living in it. He called the company countless times, but they never really gave him the time of day. It turned out that the meter to his condo was wired to a bigger condo unit that is nearby. He had been paying for his neighbor’s bills for 10 years. CL&P finally decided to look into the situation and paid him his overdue $12,000 in mid-October.

I think that big companies like this don’t even take time to listen to their customers’ problems or issues that they are facing because they think they would be able to get away with it. Some employees or customer representatives might lie to the customer to get them to stop complaining. But ideally, the complaining will get worse if nothing is done to resolve the situation. I think that the company should be more careful choosing and hiring people for these kinds of jobs. I feel like these jobs are very crucial, because the customers will only think bad of these kinds of careless companies and wouldn’t want to be with this company. In the end, all they will do is lose customers.

German neo-Nazi terror cell linked to 10 murders
    By: Rick Noack
    http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/14/world/europe/germany-arrest/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

This article is about a "neo-Nazi" group killing at least 10 people in terror cells. The victims were mostly of Turkey and Greek origin. Two suspects have been arrested. The alleged terrorists claim to have killed eight ethnic Turks, one ethnic Greek, and a police officer between 2000 and 2007. Two of the alleged terrorists, identified as Uwe B. and Uwe M. were found dead in a burning motor home on November 4th, and their flatmate Beate Z. set off a bomb in the German city, Zwickau, and fled. She turned herself into police four days later though. Authorities are still investigating this case.

I think the fact that there are "neo-Nazi" groups is pretty sad. I feel that police should have done a better job at getting to this case earlier, because these people ran free for so long. A few of them were arrested in 1998 after preparing a bomb attack, but they weren't monitored after that. I think they should have been at least monitored slightly, because people like that would probably consider doing it again. I believe the police didn't do a great job of preventing the deaths from happening and investigating sooner.

In this article that I read it explains and tells how cities struggle to deal with the occupy movement. They do not know what to do and they do not know how. Police in riot gear moved into the Occupy Oakland encampment Monday. They came in tearing down tents and arresting some protesters. City officials across the country to gain control over a movement that some leaders say had become a public safety and health threat. In Oregon, Portland police made more than 50 arrests and In Oakland, California there were about 32 arrests. In Denver, police arrested three protesters on Sunday, a day after taking 17 people into custody in a dispute over clearing furniture and tents. Numerous reports of thefts and assaults in the encampment have been made, and 15 emergency medical runs were made.
I feel like it is important for someone to do something. People get arrested every day in every city and not making a change is not helping or making the situation any better. I think this is the governments fault and they need to deal with it soon. This is nothing a small little town can deal with. We need someone who can come out there and give to the people. Give the people what they want so no more of this occupy movement.

    http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/14/health/stem-cells-heart-damage-reverse/index.html?hpt=hp_c1

This article is about the development of stem cell research. More specifically it tells of how stem cells have been discovered to be able to reverse damage done to the heart. According to the article, this theory started in 2009 when a man suffered from a severe heart attack that destroyed about a third of his heart. He was the first to receive stem cell treatment. According to a study of the people with heart damage and stem cell treatment, all patients markedly improved after the treatment. Not only did the patients experience a reversal in the damage done to their heart, they were also able to make a full recovery in amazing time.

To me this is really surprising because I would never think such a miraculous recovery would be possible. Considering how badly injured these people became, it's amazing to see how quickly and effectively they were able to recover. This relates to me personally because my parents are both stem cell researchers. It is amazing to see the effect of everything that they all work for. However I feel like something this effective and powerful must have some side effects in the future. It feels like nothing can really be this amazing. After reading this article I think stem cells could be the answer to many of the future's medical problems.

A horrifying story of a six-month year old girl was returned to her parents Sunday night after being found strapped into a car seat in a parking lot in Roanoke shopping center. They supposedly did not find charges against the father who forgot to place the child in his car after getting pizza. An off duty officer discovered the child in the car. Authorities found it very strange that the father had multiple children but forgot just one.
Some how after interviewing the family many times the police felt comfortable realizing the baby girl back to her home.
This story is very sad. I don’t see why the authorities didn’t take it further. They could have looked into it way more. It seems like there was a mix up between the father and his story because I find it really hard to believe that you would take all of your children except for one. I personally do believe that the father could have had something to do with it because his story and the common since in this world just don’t add up.

Title- Turkey threatens to cut electricity as Syria is more isolated
    Author-Ivan Watson
    Source-CNN.com
    Date-November 15,2011
    URL-http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/15/world/meast/syria-isolation/index.html?hpt=hp_t3

This article is about Turkey threatening to cut off the supply of electricity to Syria because of Syria getting pressure from many governments including Turkey, North American, European, and Arab countries; the pressure is because of their current issues about prodemocratic demonstrators. Turkey was once a very close ally with Syria but is now having discutions with the Arab League about suspending Syria's membership in their alliance.

I think that Syria needs to do whatever they can to stay in the Arab League and to continue getting electricity from Turkey. If Turkey stops giving Syria electricity, then Syria could be in serious trouble because the quality of life for the citizens would go down by a lot. I also think that right now Syria needs to focus on improving bonds with Turkey, but after that clears up, they will need to figure out how they can start to provide their own electricity so that if another situation like this pops up again in the future, then they will have a solid backup and will not be in such a deep hole if the other side does what they threaten to do. This relates to our class because it is just like how civilizations are always fighting with each other or are forming bonds with each other. I am very concerned for Syria because if they get dumped by Turkey it could become very hard for them.

Title:Months Before Total Confusion On Libya, Herman Cain Was Totally Sure Obama Was Wrong

    Date: November 14th

    URL: http://thinkprogress.org/security/2011/11/14/368268/herman-cain-libya/

This article made me laugh quite a bit. Presidential candidate Herman Cain, was interviewed about his views on Libya's uprising. He was asked many questions that revealed his views on Obama and whether he agrees or disagrees with Obama's decisions. He was asked one question about if he agrees with Obama's decision to support the uprising in Libya. Cain seemed uncertain at first, but that uncertainty lasted for a good minute of two. Then he basically asked the interviewer if Obama even supported the Libyan revolution. This was all quite amusing.

I think that this reflects on Herman Cain's involvement with becoming the President of the United States. That is no small feat, being president requires you to be on top of things all the time. Why would we want a president that doesn't know half of the things that are going on in the world. To be fair to Mr. Cain, I do admit that he is getting quite a bit of harsh criticism for this. However, this criticism should help him, not hurt him.

    http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/11/opinion/clark-penn-paterno/index.html

For the past week, the Penn State football program has been under fire for an alleged abuse scandal. 32-year assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky was charged with sexually abusing multiple boys associated with a charity he worked for. When Sandusky was arrested on these charges he protested, saying he was “just horsing around” and that it “wasn’t sexual conduct”. Four days later, head coach Joe Paterno was fired along with school president Graham Spanier for their lack of action against the alleged scandal. Paterno later released a statement saying “This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more."

I think it’s terrible one man had to ruin such a prized and successful football program. Joe Paterno is a living football legend, and the university fully supported him until this controversy arose. Not only is it bad for Paterno; but it’s bad for this whole team and the student body at Penn State. I feel sorry for everyone at Penn State who was impacted by Sandusky’s behavior. Hopefully the football team will be able to focus on the game this Saturday without their long-time coach.

The search for a missing 2 year old boy has been on going for over a week now. The mother says that she thinks that he was kidnapped. The police department in Seattle Washington have gotten over 900 calls with people reporting who they think are suspects.

I think this is a really sad situation because the boys mother is literally spending all her time searching and searching for her son. I could not even imagine how sad she must be feeling. Thankfully the father is stepping in to help when he heard the news about his son.

Police in missouri have found a dead body of a little boy in wooden area on tuesday. This worries some people because there is a missing boy that is 2 years old and this little boy found us estimated ti be 1 year old. The little boy has not yet been identified. But the police does not think it is the little boy from washington because that is the only kid missing right now and that they have not gotten any other reports.

The boys body was found by some people walking their dog. But now the report of a missing 1-year-old Tyler Daniel Dasher has been reported and the officials of Missouri are beginning to think and put pieces together and solving this crime because i find this story very sad because the life of a little innocent boy has been taken away and i for SURE that the little kid di nothing to the person who killed it, i mean the like the kid was so small what could he have done and if he did do something why would you kill ham this world has been getting worse why cant we all stop the crime and hate and just let each other do our things without being worried that something bad will happen to us. Saturday night on East Franklin Street many people were protesting like they have been for over a month as part of the Occupy Wall Street Movement, when apparently some members of this group and others broke into an empty building. On Sunday afternoon police officers came in with automatic weapons pointing at unarmed protestor. Many protesters were arrested Sunday night and a few protesters say that they were not given a warning before the weapons were pointed at them. The Carrboro Alderman spoke out about the incident Monday about how ironic it is that Officers were pointing weapons at unarmed citizens. Monday afternoon there was a conference over the situation with Police chief Chris Blue and Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt. There were protestors at this conference to make their point about the incident Sunday on how they felt about the threat of a weapon being pointed at them.

I am interested to hear what went on in the conference, and I’m sure that they will continue to discuss on what happened Sunday night. This needs to be fixed, I think it wasn’t right for Officers to come in with guns out and pointed at citizens. The protestors have the right to protest but as long as it is peaceful and not vandilizing property.

Former defensive coordinator for the Penn State football team, Jerry Sandusky was arrested Saturday. Sandusky, who is 67 years old is being charged with sexually abusing eight boys over a fifteen year period. Sandusky reportedly did it through his charity, The Second Mile. The charity helped out needy boys and Sandusky used it to prey on them.
This is very disturbing and terrible that something like this has happened. I feel like everyone involved in this did a bad thing by hiding it. Even though Joe Paterno didnt do anything criminally wrong I believe that he did something very morally wrong. He reported the incident of the sexual assault to his superiors which is what he is supposed to do. However I think that he could have done more to expose this. By staying silent he didn't look out for the kids like he should have.

    Faster than light neutrinos
    http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2011-09/baffling-cern-results-show-neutrinos-moving-faster-speed-light

On 9/22/11 the Central European Research Network (CERN) released that they had launched 16,000 neutrinos from their headquarters in Geneva to the Gran Sasso laboratory 455 miles away in Italy. Neutrinos are particles that are so uninteractive that they pass right through the whole earth. They move at the speed of light. However at CERN the results were that they came ~64 nanoseconds before they should. Sadly this was a false reading. The satellites judging the time were also under the laws of relativity so the readings were inaccurate. Sadly when you take this and the rotation of the earth into account we find that they are going right below the speed of light, as usual.
I feel that this event is just one more that was a let-down. On some of the articles online they talk about possible inter-stellar travel in mere days. But here we are knowing that we found nothing. I think that if we did find a way to travel at even a decent percent of the speed of light we would be disappointed by what is out there, there is a reason that it is 2011 and we still don't have lunar colonies. There is nothing out there. The cost out there of things we take for granted here would be ridiculous a $100000 gallon of ice cream. In general I think that this was a big let-down for the world.

Man arrested in White House shooting probe
This article is about a man who got arrested because of a shooting incident. The guys name was Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez. He was involved in a shooting and was the police department found 2 bullets on the ground. One was found on a bulletproof window, and another outside of the White House. This article is significant because it talks about a shooting and where it was shot, which is the United States most valuable monument, the White House.

After reading the article, I was shocked. This is because a man could get into the White House and shoot a gun. I can’t believe that the security did not pick him off earlier. I think that him being able too shoot was a bad part on the security. I think that after this, the security will rise, and that this should not happen again. Even saying that, the police did capture him, and the man didn’t wreck more havoc. A question that concerned me was how good is the security around the United States?

  17. In my glimpse over the previous articles, which was forced upon me by Blogger's poor website design and by my awful Internet connection, I noticed that no one so far has written about anything close to home. I, therefore, have decided to write about the recent eviction of the anarchists that took over the old abandoned Chrysler dealership. Those anarchists have tried to align themselves with Occupy Carrboro, but they were not agreed with and therefore formed a splinter cell, Occupy Chapel Hill. They took over an abandoned building downtown, but in short order they were kicked out by the police, who conducted a raid carrying assault rifles and pistols. The anarchists were jeering and shouting, "Kill the pigs" and other slogans.

I think that the police have made an error in their use of the SWAT team, not that I think it was in and of itself an overuse of force but because I believe that by going in with drawn weapons they have proved the point of the anarchists, that the police are brutal thugs who terrorize as much as they protect. Without a doubt, the anarchists were breaking the law by breaking and entering. Their point that they are only 'recycling' the building is null, as it is akin to me taking stuff from your house while you are on vacation.

Like many people around the country I am an NBA fan. Like many people I am stresseBasd that basketball at the highest level is not on the TV when I switch the channel to the NBA network, or to Tuesday night ESPN basketball. Currently in a lockout, the NBA is not a league of basketball. It is a war between the owner’s and players. This war is for many reasons, but the main being basketball related income or BRI. The players want around 53% and the owners want at least 50%. The previous deal was for the players to get 57%, and dropping to 50 would man the players get millions of dollars less annually.

To make matters worse, the basketball players have sued the NBA in a class action suit. This just seems to me to be too harsh. The NBA is the National Basketball Association. Not an association of lawyer’s and fighting. No matter what deal is presided I am sure players will still be paid millions, and owners will still be billionaires. Watching basketball on TV will make people like me happier, and give back the jobs of people who work for the league. A basketball fan by the name of Barack Obama said this about the lockout. “In a contest between billionaires and millionaires, they should be able to figure out how to divvy up their profits in a way that serves their fans, who are allowing them to be making all this money not to mention all the folks who work in the concession stands and in the parking lots of facilities all across the country.” I agree with our president

Will Syria listen to anyone as crisis grows?
    http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/16/world/meast/syria-what-next/index.html?hpt=wo_c1

In a surprise move on November 12th, the Arab league voted to suspend Syria’s membership amid its violent crackdown on protestors. This, along with King Abdullah of Jordan’s statement that if he were the president of Syria, he would step down and Turkey threatening to cut off power supplies is stinging blow to al-Assad, the president of Syria. Having two of its regional allies as well as the rest of the Arab world turn their backs on him is definitely a crippling blow. Even Iran, one of Syria’s most important allies, is reported to having established links to opposition groups. While al-Assad believes that he can withstand sanctions imposed by the rest of the world, whether he will be able to stop military action remains to be seen.

I believe that al-Assad should either stop the violence or step down as president. As a leader of a country, he knows the best interests of his country, but instead of following them he chooses to ignore them. The violence against the opposition simply lowers his standing among the people and the world. I think that al-Assad should do what king Abdullah of Jordan has done. Jordan also faced protesting, but unlike al-Assad, Abdullah sought peaceful means to end the conflict and even appointed a new prime minister who is a reputed reformer. I am worried, however, that Syria’s defiance could lead to war and hope that Syria will seek non-violent ways to end the conflict.

New York Court Upholds Eviction of Occupy Protesters
    November 16, 2011
    http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/15/us/new-york-occupy-eviction/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

The Occupy protesters were removed from Zuccotti Park on Tuesday morning by police, and the matter was taken to court. The judge ruled that they were allowed to have demonstrations in Zuccotti Park, but not allowed to remain there. This meant that they were not to have items such as tents or generators. This made the protestors mad, and they claimed that the rules were slanted in favor of money. The police say that they will let the protestors object, but their main goal is to ensure the safety of the other people in the park. As they evicted people from the park early Tuesday morning, they arrested more than 100 people and made sure everyone was out of the park, taking personal possessions and not being afraid to show their presence.

I think that the judge wasn’t right to make that decision, especially if he was bribed by money. However, if the protests actually threaten the health of citizens or the safety, the decision was right. I don’t think the police should be so brutal when they are removing people from where they are protesting, because that will only make the protestors more determined. The Occupy Wall Street Movement isn’t very organized, but they had a right to the park, and the police should know this. I’m concerned about the depth the protestors will go to receive their rights back to stay at the park, and if they will no longer be as peaceful if they try.

“Google opens online music store and free storage locker”

    http://bit.ly/rUjRD7

iTunes has a new competitor: Google Music. Google has released an online music store and a free Web storage locker for listening to tracks from computers, tablets and phones. The music store sells songs and albums for prices comparable to iTunes and Amazon MP3, but Google's catalog is much smaller. The store can be found in the Android Market, an application and website where Google smartphone users can download apps. Google Music is free for storing as many as 20,000 songs.

After hearing this, I went on Google’s website and played around with the new Google Music. I was very impressed with the “tour” which was intriguing and simple to navigate like most Google things. As much of a Google fan girl I am, I still don’t think that Google will ever be able to top iTunes. Just speaking for myself, I don’t think I will switch to Google music because I already have my iTunes (which has over 1,000 songs) and I don’t feel the urge to buy all those songs over again. Also, iTunes came first so I’m more used to the system. And lastly, I don’t own an Android operated device so it would honestly be pointless. Either way, however, I think that this new invention is cool and will be good for Google.

The article I chose was about Occupy Oakland. Oakland is near San Fransisco in California--it has been one of the most successful “Occupies” there has been. Occupy Oakland was busted Monday ceasing the on-going protest of Occupying. Occupy in New York City on Wall Street was recently broken up early this Tuesday morning, November fifteenth. It seems as though other police forces and government officials have taken the Oakland’s initiative and broken up New York City’s successful Occupy as well. When I first heard of this I was astonished by the amount of disrespect the government has for citizens of the United States’ constitutional rights to protest without being arrested or harassed.

This article told about how hundreds of police officers raided Occupy Oakland arresting thirty-three participants of the protest. Participants of the protest used Snow Park (a park near by their original campsite) as a satellite campsite where about thirty tents were set up. Police officials say they will destroy that campsite as well. I wonder if the police will make any more arrests or if they will claim to other things that are wrong with protesters. It is similar to Occupy Chapel Hill; the police made many arrests this Sunday including detaining reporters who were on the site at the time.

There is a law suit going on between Micheal Jacksons family and a company. The company which cnn does not give a name is elling replicas of Micheal "beat it coat" and and "Thriller." The jacksons are suing for over 100,000 dollarss because they claim that the company has dubbed them. The companys Ceo mr bobhot has failed to sign and pay for many other alleged crimes.

I think the Jacksons are doing the right thing by suing Mr. Bobhot because he is using there jackets. The Jackson brothers actually only bought 500 jackets after Micheal Jackson died and they sold them online for 2 thousand dollars. I think Mr bobhot should go to jail because he has dubbed many other companies and not paid them back for his crimes.

The major world powers have increased pressure on Iran to address fears about its nuclear program. They fear that the Iranian nuclear program may not just be for nuclear energy, but might actually be for nuclear weapons. The International Atomic Energy Agency, the IAEA, has previously done research, showing that Iran may be close to weapons capability, increasing tensions in the Middle East. Iran has responded by stating that the reports were fabricated, and biased towards the west. The IAEA is expected to vote on a resolution drafted by the different countries this Friday.

Nuclear energy presents an interesting dilemma. Nuclear energy is extraordinarily efficient, and is much more effective than conventional energy sources. On the other hand, if a nation has the capability to produce nuclear power plants, they will easily have the capability for manufacturing nuclear weapons, and therein lies the dilemma. Nuclear weapons are weapons of mass destruction, and we must decide whether to take the risk of nuclear weapons for an efficient energy source, or stick with conventional sources. The problem is, however, that humanity has already picked a choice, and now many countries are close to developing nuclear weapons, Iran among them. If Iran manages to complete their nuclear program, it could mean destabilization of the Middle East, a region with about as much stability as a cargo container on top of a single brick while going through the water at ninety miles an hour.

Couple Hides Recording Device on Developmentally Disabled Daughter to Prove teacher, school aide were bullying her

This article is about a 14 year old developmentally disabled girl (Cheyanne) who was being bullied by her teachers. Cheyanne's parents complained to school officials about the emotional and mental abuse that their daughter was dealing with, but they were just brushed aside. Her parents hid a recording device on her and recorded over 4 days worth of her teachers comments toward her. The teacher and teacher aide are heard criticizing Cheyanne and making crude remarks towards her. Cheyanne's mother expressed concern over the teacher aide for many years, but only decided now is the time to prove what her concern was about. Cheyanne's parents published the tapes to the school officials who intially rejected their claims to begin with.

I thought that this was very disappointing. It's very sickening to know how rude people can be, especiallly when dealing with someone with special needs. It's also very sad to know that the people saying these hurtful and rude remarks were adults, as adults should know better. Everyone should be treated with respect; students to teachers, and teachers to students. I'm glad to know that the two teachers have been caught for their mindless actions.

Jerry Sandusky was the former defensive coordinator at Penn State University. He was arrested Saturday for raping eight boys in Penn States showers and more are coming out. Jerry Sandusky used to found a charity organization called Second Mile. This is an organization that helps out abused children. The boys he raped all came from this organization that he founded.

These charges against Jerry Sandusky are absolutely nasty. This man pretends to care for abused children just so he could abuse them sexually. This man should be put into jail for life for his actions. The Penn State program should be ashamed of their football program. Coach Paterno (the coach at the time) knew of what he was doing in the showers and only tells the AD. He deserves to lose his job after that. This scandal has been a nightmare for all those boys that have been sexual abused.

Recently the head football coach Joe Paterno was fired because of the lack of atention that he out on the proble. This firing caused havock on the Penn State campus. News trucks were flipped over, there were huge riots, and some cars were destroyed.

I personally think that Joe Paterno should have been fired. He knew about a disgusting issue and didn't address the police with it. Also, this move was kind of necessary for the university. The university wanted to put this problem behind them as fast as possible. The only waty to do this was to get rid of anyone who witnessed it. Even though Joe Paterno was a legendary coach I think this move was the right move.

    Mass Arrests at Occupy Protests
    BBC News/ November 17th 2011
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-15784439

In New York, Occupy Wall Street demonstrators marched on the Brooklyn Bridge to protest. Many Activists tried to occupy the subways of New York during rush hours as they all marched.
There were fights and riots with the police. Around 175 people got arrested for the riots and other troubles.During this incident, five policemen had been injured badly. This is only one of the rallies. There are rallies all over the U.S. such as Los Angeles where hundreds marched and 20 arrested, in Dallas, 18 were arrested as well as in Portland.

I think that is article is not very surprising at all. I do not think that it is such a shocker because many people are ready knew that this Occupy Wall Street was going to get bigger. I personally think that this movement is a good thing. I do believe that we need to fix the problem. Although I think that the movement is a good thing, i do not believe that it should not get so violent. So many people are getting arrested and I feel that they should not get arrested for standing up for freedom. Also i read another news article about two protesters getting sprayed by pepper spray while protesting. One was a very old women and the other was a pregnant 19 year old. It made me very sad to see that happen. This movement was meant to be peaceful, and now there are dozens of people in hospital and in jail. I don’t think that this will stop and will only get worse unless the government takes part and change things. If it does not happen soon, more riots will occur and many more people will get injured.

“Obama’s more muscular China policy sets Beijing on edge”

Obama seems to be contesting rising Chinese power. He has already released a plan for a larger presence of US Marines is Australia. He recommended a new free trade area that leaves China out. Obama intends to “deter threats to peace.” The US intends to remain an Asia-Pacific power. This plan has drawn many smaller countries. Japan and Canada expressed interest, while China was left out. Obama is also pushing for the expansion of the Trans-Pacific partnership, a free trade agreement that has interested smaller countries as well.

I believe that it is a good idea that Obama is trying to improve our relations abroad. I don’t fully understand the concepts behind these plans. However, it seems that the Chinese feel betrayed by it. It surprised me was that Obama left China out, even when we are tangled in $456 billion in trade with them. I am interested in seeing how this turns out.

This Article was about the new awesome features of an iPod nano and an iPod shuffle. Some of these amazing new features are; the iPod nano and shuffle may have external speakers and be able to use the Nike software on the nano without any earphones. The sales of this year and last year have gone down by 27 percent. But they have sold 6.6 million iPods which in my point of view is more than enough. This article is significant because the technology has gone up so fast and it is currently rising, also iPods are amazing little tiny music devices! They are portable and easy to carry and with the constant updates and upgrades the iPods will change the way we use technology differently.

I think that these new updates for the iPods will be a great upgrade for the iPods and the customers. Because I do not think that sharing earwax is everyone’s favorite way of listening to music. When the 1st generation iPod touch came out everyone was so excited and it became so popular. Right now it is still one of the most popular iPods and it has evolved so much throughout the years. Do you like these new updates/upgrades given to the iPods?

In my article, the focus is on three girls who all have aspirations of becoming professional boxers at the Olympics or other professions that are just recently becoming available to them, like doctors. Their families are mostly supportive, and they want to know how to defend themselves.

I really believe that this is a good thing. It shows that Afghanistan, at least, is moving on and becoming more modern, letting women have more control. This marks so much progress, and it's kind of like the light at the end of the tunnel. It doesn't really connect to anything we're doing in class. I wonder about how these girls are planning on getting to the Olympics? Because I know nothing of the logistics, it would be good to know more.

A 21-year-old man was charged with attempted assassination of President Barack Obama. The man, Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez, is from Idaho Falls in Idaho, and was reported by federal authorities to have believed the president was “the Antichrist” and that he “needed to kill him”. He was apparently “convinced the government is conspiring against him” and becoming “increasingly more agitated” before he left Idaho, according to the report. Evidence was also found linking him to the crime, such as the fact that he had been wearing an identical jacket to the one found at the crime scene at least twice on the day of the shooting.

It isn’t clear to me from the article exactly how much evidence there is linking Ortega-Hernandez to the attempted assassination. Nonetheless, I think that any attempt to assassinate the president is an irrational and misguided one. Besides the obvious immorality of murder, it is incredibly impractical to try to commit such a crime in as secure an area as the White House. It is also irrational to think that killing the people in charge is going to solve anything in the long run of politics, and would have huge backlash against one’s own ideas and standpoints.

A Lisbon court has denied a US request for the extradition of American fugitive George Wright, his lawyer says. The extradition was refused on the grounds that Wright is a Portuguese citizen.
The US Justice Department said it was "extremely disappointed" with the decision.
Wright was captured near Lisbon in September after more than 40 years on the run. The FBI tracked him down. The US wanted him back to serve the rest of his 15- to 30-year sentence for a 1962 murder. Wright escaped from a New Jersey prison in 1970 and hijacked a US airliner two years later.

I think that the Portuguese made the wrong decision and should have given up the man. Because now, they must deal with a murderer who has been wanted for more than 40 years. Also they have also possibly lowered their diplomatic relations with the US by denying their request. The man is also a US citizen which is also a good reason he SHOULD be extradited. I really wouldn't know why the Portuguese government wouldn't want a murderer and escapee off their hands. Well, it's their problem now, Good luck Portugal.

I saw this on the local news. I was surprised because there have been a lot of suicides, but at the same time I was not surprised because jasmine is a ten year old. When I was her age, I got insulted a lot by boys, but the government has gotten stricter about bullying since. Most people think about economical problems in the United States. Those problems are very important, but I think adult citizens need to care about the problems of the kids in schools these days. I think it was crazy for a ten-year-old girl to commit suicide because jasmine is young and needed to live longer to get rid of the problem. I have bullied people in the past, but I also think the government needs to get more serious about bullying.

Get In a spaceship and reach the other end of the universe. Yeah right. The universe is infinite and grows infinitely; most people should know this. But scientists working together found new ‘wonders’ or discoveries that made Einstein’s universe theorems faulty and had to be revised. You know that the universe is expanding, and studies recently found that the expansion of the universe was accelerating (so the universe is growing faster). But how is it accelerating? Science teams examined certain types of IA supernovae, which are massive explosions of old stars that are as heavy as our sun, but with a size of Earth. These high density stars simultaneously explode/combust releasing energy that helps an increasing velocity to our expanding universe. At the increasing expansion of our universe, all galaxies are pushed away from each other equidistantly. Take a point anywhere in the universe, now as our envisioned universe expands, that point that you took separates itself farther from everything else. “What about the other galaxies, why just take one point?” Well, there isn’t one point you take, this process goes through and for every galaxy. Essentially, as the universe expands faster, we separate from other galaxies, and the difference between every galaxy must increase equally to those others. I know this seems very perplexing but eventually you will understand. Let’s say you take ten apples and lay them out on a table. The barriers are infinite, so the table goes on forever. Move one apple a certain distance away from the others. Now take the same distance you used for that one apple and apply it to all the other ones. All the apples were galaxies and the table was the universe. The galaxies equally spread apart from each other. Hopefully you understand now.

But not only do the galaxies move, but the solar systems and everything inside. Thus, our galaxy and our solar system are expanding, resulting in more seclusion from other planets. What I’m saying is, believe it or not; we are moving further away from our sun and moon. What I think of this? If our lives lasted thousands of years I would be devastated! Our planet will become colder, space missions will have to go farther to explore, causing NASA to use more resources for each spaceship voyage.

On 2-month anniversary, 200 Occupiers arrested

Today is the mark of the two-month “milestone” for the Occupy Wall Street protestors. They decided how to celebrate, by blocking traffic. Isn’t that such a great way to protest without affecting others? (←Sarcasm). Well the police came in to clear the roads and the conflict started. Glass was thrown, batons brought down, bricks flying, and vinegar spewing (What?). Bloodshed on both sides and the police made a few arrests. The usual OWC junk. Not much different except now they are actually trying to cause trouble.

So I still find the OWC pointless. First they block traffic, maybe some window breaking next. They practically ask the police to hit them so they can post it on face book and say,” the government is trying to keep us quiet!” Most of OWC people protest for the point of protesting. They have nothing better to do (and there’s free food!). My question is when this will end and when can we get on with our lives?

On Sunday police officers with automatic guns came to Franklin Street. Their intent, stopping a breaking and entering in an abandoned downtown building. The police and the city strongly insist that what they did is right. While nobody was hurt, 2 innocent members of the press were arrested just for being in the area. On the other hand, people who were in the building insist that what they did is completely legal. They say that they just came to set up a recreation center. The occupy Chapel Hill people also make it very clear that they are not affiliated with the invaders and the city is not going to make them leave.

I think that sending in officers with huge, deadly weapons was quite over the top. The people in the building were only charged of breaking and entering. Though, what they did is illegal, you can’t just stroll into an empty building and decide that it is yours. That seemed to be a major lack of foresight on their part and impulsive bad decisions. The police, I feel also made bad decisions, in arresting the reporter and carrying automatic guns. In all, I feel that everyone is in the wrong and people should know better that this in the future. I just wonder what will happen to everyone involved. Will the break and enterers be imprisoned?

Iran 'Has A Case to Answer,' Nuclear Watchdog Says

    By the CNN Wire Staff

For a while now, Iran's nuclear energy programs have been under scrutiny because some possible evidence has been found that Iran is developing nuclear weapons. So, The International Atomic Energy Association is sending in a team to investigate the possible nuclear weapons. While Iran insists that their nuclear energy is peaceful, bomb components have been found. The U.S. Has previously tried to solve this problem, but to avail. If Iran is indeed making nukes, it will be a very difficult situation to solve considering Iran has lied for a long time about this. Iran also insist that the U.S. is lying and the evidence they have is fake.

I think that as a whole nuclear weapons should not be allowed. They kill too many civilians and innocents to be worthwhile. I think that while it is somewhat odd that the U.S. has nukes but says others can't have them, i see why we are trying to stop Iran. In the middle east, Israel is a very disliked country because it was created from nowhere and land was taken from Palestine to create it. so, there is a good chance that they would launch nukes against Israel, so i think that we are justified in trying to stop them.

On November 14th Brazilian special forces and police swept through Rocinha, the city’s worst and biggest shantytown. In just two hours 3,000 troops declared victory. They wiped out many drug dealers and other criminals without a single shot being fired, so now there are not many drug dealers left in that slum.
I think this is a very good thing to do before the next World Cup and Olympic games happen there, which is soon. Many residents of Rocinha say it is much safer now since this has happened. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/16/health/hip-impingement-grows-popular-but-remains-unproven.html?src=me&ref=general

One of the most popular procedures or surgeries in athletes is the bone shaving procedure. Often athletes will feel discomfort at the hip from a rough edged hip bone fraying tendons or tearing at muscles. The procedure involves the surgeon just shaving off the rough parts of the bone to smooth it out. Many professional athletes have had it done such at sprinter, Tyson Gay and baseball player, Alex Rodriguez. However, some doctors and scientists are questioning whether the procedure even helps at all. Athletes say their hip stops hurting immediately after they’ve had the procedure but that might also be because most people also get any damage to tendons and muscles fixed along with the bone getting shaved. It is also hard to tell whether the surgery prevents arthritis or not as it takes arthritis years to develop.
I think the article was interesting because it talked about athletes that have hip problems from over use. I play a lot of soccer and have had my share of hip problems and its always hard to tell what is causing the discomfort. I didn’t know it was such a problem for other athletes too and I have a lot or respect for the person who wrote this article for addressing this. There are a lot of injuries that are more serious than we know and it takes the media forever to tell people about it. It took a very long time for people to finally realize how serious a concussion is and I don’t want that to happen with another injury so I think its important to write about it when anything like that comes up.

If you lose a limb it is very difficult to participate in a sport. So this is an opportunity for veterans with missing limbs to participate in sports. All of the vets got together to play a match of soccer. They wore USA jerseys and played against a team from Haiti that had people with missing limbs as well
#2: I think that this is great because it is a thrilling moment for these vets that they will not be able to experience again. Getting a life long deform is a very serious thing because you can not do as many things as what you used to be able to do. This is a good way for these soldiers to compete with other people with the same conditions as them. It is also exersice for them because it is much more difficult to exersice while having missing limbs. They will never forget this.

I picked an article about a ten year old girl named Jasmine McClain. On Monday night jasmine hung herself in her room and suffocated to death. Her suicide was surprising she was known as a sweet, loving child. People’s posts on the internet lead the police to believe she commited suicide because she was bullied at school. Jasmine was repeatedly bullied about her clothes, hair, and other things.

I think that bullying is something that can cause bad reactions in young children. It is an ongoing problem that should be dealt with right away, doing so could save a childs life. Maybe if the bullying of Jasmine McClain was stopped she might still be living today. Some kids get away with bullying by passing it off like “I was just kidding” or “I didn’t mean it that way.” They should be punished. Even though teasing can sometimes seem to be harmless it can also cause some serious damage. Is there something you could do to prevent bullying? Can you stand up for someone tommorrow? Think about it.

my dad also told me that when he was listening to NPR he heard that the number of people at the D.C. branch was swelling dramatically due tho the number of students joining. i think that it is good for so many people to be involved. the more people the less likely for it all to come crashing down. though it is always hard to completely with someone or something i think it is a step in the right direction. i also think that with the movements participation growing they have finally found the direction they need to head in.

Smiles Hide Fears as Clinton Visits Flood Victims

    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/18/world/asia/smiles-hide-fears-as-clinton-visits-flood-victims.html?hpw
The article that i read talked about Clinton going to Thailand. Mrs. Clinton came to Thailand to visit the people living in shelters after the terrible flood that occurred there in 2011. Mrs. Clinton spent her time there talking to and comforting the people at the shelter. The article talks about how the people in the shelter have reacted to this huge change in their life. Many people have had nervous break downs and some start talking to themselves and have mood swings. Mrs. Clinton later announced that she is giving them a $10 million package of assistance.

I think that this flood in Thailand is a horrible thing, i am very happy that Mrs. Clinton went there to visit. I think that is great that she gave the $10 million and also that she didn't just send the money, but that she went there herself and offered her support to the people there. These people are going through a very hard time and they need all of the support and help that they can get. I think that others should also go and give their support to Thailand. This relates to what we have learned in world history class because the article says that the flood occurred during the monsoon. I want to know what happens next, will others come to visit like Mrs. Clinton did? How will these peoples lives begin to go back to normal and when?

Recently a widow of a solider that fought in Iraq was elected as one of the top 10 Heroes of 2011. After losing her husband, she organized a group for other widows that have gone through the same tragedy called the American Widow Project. Over 900 women have been touched by this group and there have been retreats for these ladies since 2007. Davis received this call while preparing for a retreat for the women, and says she believes the recognition should be for all the women out there who have struggled. She states that this title will also allow more women to become aware of this group and know they are not the only ones suffering from a loss, Davis says this is a larger impact than it may seem. The 50,000$ will go to events for widows throughout the country and her organization.

This is a very honorable title and for a woman helping others to deal with such a worldwide issue, she has definitely earned this. Even after being recognized and receiving a 50,000$ reward, she is continuing to use this to better women throughout the country coping with a loss. That is a true hero, and I believe this woman is a great role model for others. This will help to spread awareness for those in need of people for comfort. I had never heard of any events for widows, and so I was wondering where and when these take place, though overall it was a good article!

Joe Paterno, the legendary Penn State football coach, was fired over a scandal which involved one of his assistant coaches. Paterno and the university president were removed by an unanimous vote. Many students are now gathering in front of Paterno's house to honor the legendary figure. Paterno allegedly did not report the incident that he was told about to authorities and when the whole scandal was brought to light he was fired.

I believe that the firing of Paterno was an altogether bad idea for Penn State. He was not the one guilty of a crime, he just made a bad decision. He did however report what he had heard to a higher up official in the university. I also think that it was wrong because Paterno was practically the face of Penn State.

In Shooting at White House, Attempted Assassination Charge
    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/18/us/attempted-assassination-charge-in-shooting-at-white-house.html

I read about the attempted assassination of President Obama on Wednesday. Oscar Hernandez was charged on Thursday. He was reported missing from his hometown Idaho about a month ago by his family. His friends said he stated President Obama as being the "anitchrist" and he "needed to be fixed." He shot two bullets at the white house. Luckily, the Obama's were said to not have been home at the time so everyone was left unharmed.
In my opinion, I think that Oscar Hernandez is mentally ill. He was supposedly "fixated with President Obama". I believe he is definitely guilty because of all the evidence. They are many witnesses and he had weapons in his car as well. Also, because of the things he told his friends about President Obama, and how he strongly disliked him.

I read an article about some millionaires coming together to demand higher taxes. This group of around 2 dozen are asking the new "supercomittee" of the US Congress to raise their taxes. They want to end the tax cuts from the Bush era. They say the country will not be able to support itself and two wars at the same time. They have written a letter with 45 signatures of various millionaires. They have also compared the current way of taxes to the country becoming more socialist, rather than capitalist.

I think these people are doing a really noble and good thing. They are willing to give up more of their hard earned money for the wellness and good being of the country. These millionaires aren't obliged to pay any more than they are required, but they are explicitly asking the government to raise their taxes. They have gone lengths to try to make this happen. I think that their requests will convince Congress to change the way taxes work, especially these rich themselves are asking for it.

Ortega Hernandez has been charged for attempting to assassinate the president. There are many witnesses and a lot of evidence. The only suspicious thing is he didn’t purchase his weapon and his “acquaintances” immediately sold him out. & shots were fired at the White House and where Obama lives with his family. No one was hurt. The secret service and the FBI worked together to catch him. They found the weapon proved to have shot at the white house in his car and multiple people spotted his car. His “acquaintances” claimed he called Obama the “Anti Christ” and said he needed to be taken care of.
I think it wasn’t just him. People were working with him. Maybe he didn’t even do it and only help set up the operation agreeing to take the blame. I think he would have been a bit smarter about assassinating the president then he’s getting credit for. No one just gets a gun and suddenly goes to murder someone one day by themselves. They have the right guy but I don’t think they have the only one involved. He didn’t even purchase the weapon used and his supposed friends gave him away without hesitation. It seems like it was all set up to me. However its great they caught Hernandez

Congress Pushes Back On Healthier School Lunches, Fights To Keep Pizza And Fries
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/15/congress-pushes-back-on-h_1_n_1094764.html

The article I read was about a bill Congress passed on Monday, saying that pizza and fries are now legally considered vegetables. This is because they want to keep pizza and fries on the lunch menu for school children. School lunches require a certain serving of vegetables, so Congress had to make pizza and fries a vegetable, so that the lunches met USDA's standards. Otherwise it would have pushed potato growers and pizza-makers out of the school lunch business. Some Republicans on the House Appropriations Committee said that bill would prevent unnecessary costs. School districts have complained that USDA's proposals are too costly, and especially now when budgets are very tight.

I think that the fact that pizza and fries are being considered as vegetables is ridiculous. As obesity rates are going up every year, we should not be starting off new generations with saying fries are vegetables. The only thing I can understand is that since we are going through a financial crisis right now, we might not have the money to suddenly change everything. Although this is still not right. and I am absolutely against this.

And the president got removed because he did not report to the police when he found out what Joe was doing. The parents were glad he was getting removed. However the boys were upset, because they didn’t think that he was thing anything wrong. The boys were so upset they went to his house to cry, and then later started a riot!

In my opinion I think that this is very disturbing. I don’t really know who to believe but I hope that this is not true. But I think that they did the right thing by removing him from the team until they find out what is going on. If this is true Joe Paterno should be ashamed of himself, and the vice president, Gary, should be punished also.

The peanut butter that was recalled has been sold in Washington D.C., and 24 other states, not including North Carolina.

I think that Smucker's made a good desicion to recall peanut butter that may be contaminated with salmonella. They may have prevented many serious illnesses. He was asked one question about if he agrees with Obama's decision to support the uprising in Libya. Cain seemed uncertain at first, but that uncertainty lasted for a good minute of two. Then he basically asked the interviewer if Obama even supported the Libyan revolution. This was all quite amusing.

I think that this reflects on Herman Cain's ability to becoming the President of the United States. That is no small feat, being president requires a lot and forgetting simple things wont help. Why would we want a president that doesn't know half of the things that are going on in the world.

    CNN, cnn.com, http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/17/travel/britain-passengers-cash/index.html?hpt=wo_bn6
This week, mid-flight from India to Britain, two planes stopped, and made every passenger pay one hundred and thirty Pounds, which is about two hundred US Dollars. The passengers on this plane, when they were interviewed later by British reporters, described the incident as a “complete and utter sham.” Passengers felt as if they were being held hostage, and then having to pay their own ransom. Anyone riding the plane had to get the money during a lay-over in Vienna, and the process took seven hours for both flights. A Spanish company owns the planes, while an Austrian company, Comtel-air charters them. Both companies have been blaming the other since the incident happened.
I am very shocked that this happened. I have heard many times of air planes crews going on strikes, but I have never heard of this sort of robbery happening before. My family and I travel, and I wonder how I would feel if I was ever put in a situation like this one. I am also surprised that none of the passengers aboard the plane never contacted any of the airport police about what was happening, or if they did, why nothing came of it. I wonder what led the crew to do this, and if their mutiny has inspired any other crews to act the same way. Either way, I do hope that this never happens again.

A man from Idaho Falls, Idaho shot at the White house last Friday. today a video was released that he had previously sent to Oprah Winfrey in an attempt to get on her show. He declared himself a 'Modern day Jesus Christ.' The video was taken by a student from Idaho State University, Ramon Bailey. Bailey says that Ortega-Hernandez approached him wanting to shoot a "commercial." Ortega-Hernandez was charged with attempted assassination yesterday, and faces life in prison if convicted.

Everyone can agree that this never should have happened. A man claiming to be the "modern day Jesus Christ" attempting to kill the president? This was clearly a planed act of hatred against our president. He has previously called Obama the "anti-Christ" and said he "needed to kill" the president. His mother has defended him in her statements claiming that he isn't mentally insane. "He might be saying weird stuff that sounds crazy, but that doesn’t mean (he) is crazy," she said in a statement to the press earlier this week. I definitely am glad the president wan en-route to Hawaii at the time, and, luckily, the only effect Ortega-Hernandez's actions have had is forcing the White house staff to replace one of their bulletproof windows.

A white warehouse building located in the southern part of California has a sophisticated drug tunnel to transport marijuana from Mexico into the United States. They first found three tons of marijuana packed in a cargo truck leaving this warehouse, and then got a warrant to check it out, and found more. There has been 14.5 tons of marijuana found on both sides of the border, which related to the tunnel. These drugs had a street value of over 25 million dollars. William R. Sherman a special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration in San Diego talk about the drug tunnels. He says that if people continues to transport drugs through these tunnels, they're going to find them, and find the faster then the tunnels can be built. The tunnels was three feet wide and longer than four football fields and had structural supports, electricity and ventilation.

I think that this was not the best idea of how to smuggle drugs across the border. I think this because there have been the third in that area, and the 75 in the past four years. I don't have any personal experience with this article. I do want to know how long this smuggling had been going on for, and how many people are involved in it? Over these past few weeks you've probably been hearing about the Penn State sexual abuse scandal. One of the assistant coaches, Jerry Sandusky, of the Penn State football program was accused of sexually assaulting little children in the Penn State locker rooms. When these accusations were presented, Paterno was forced to resign because he had known about Sandusky's whereabouts for years and didn't go to the police. These accusations have really hurt Penn State's reputation. Their school was one of prestige but now it is being brought down by one man.

I hope that this team can pull itself back on its feet. By judging last week's performance, this team will have to find a better coach.

She is calling her store Parnassus Books. Ann Patchet is an author, and she grew up in Nashville, and so she decided that, rather than live in a town that doesn’t have any bookstores, she would open one of her own. She is financially able to open the store because her books have done really well, her most recent book, “State of Wonder” was rated number 3 on the New York Times Hardcover Fiction best-seller list. Parnassus Books will open today.
I really admire Ann Patchet for doing this. It is very hard for me to sit and watch book stores even just in Chapel Hill go bankrupt, like Borders. I also find it very dis-heartening that people would rather read a book on a kindle or on their ipads than out of an actual book. Society today has crammed reading for pleasure into a narrow corner, where it is only looked at if a person has nothing better to do. Too many people would rather play computer games, or watch t.v. than read a good book. I admit that I am guilty of doing this too, but it is a bad habit that we should all stop. Bookstores are going bankrupt and the libraries are losing buisness, if someone likes reading books they should give these two buisness, which is why I really admire Ann Patchet for going on the line and opening a bookstore amidst all of the Kindles and i-pads. The only thing that I am concerned about is that her store might not get buisness enough for her to sustain it by herself.

The trial finally came to a close after mistrials and 3 years in a juvenile facility. Brandon was found guilty of murder and manslaughter in the first degree, and was sentenced to 21 years in prison. 11 for the murder and 10 for bringing the firearm on school campus. There is no chance of early release. The defendant finally pleaded guilty and was tried as an adult. This horrible event can finally be put to rest.

I am glad the family of King can finally get a little justice in their loss. I believe this sentence is a little generous but better than alternatives. I think this will set an example and help others security by showing the repercussions of actions like this. I have been bullied in the past and the justice served after is the only rest bit I got. I only hope the family can heal after such a devastating loss. My only question after reading this is, How will we better protect others from situations like these in the future?

I recently read an article in The New York Times about the alarmingly high use of antipsychosis drugs in foster homes and orphanages. Antipyschosis drugs are medicines that are used for the treatment for severe bipolar disorders and schizophrenia. Many children in the foster care system come from disturbed households and have hectic and unstable home lives. Because of trauma at young ages, as kids get older, they tend to act out more. With the lack of therapeutic resources, doctors just give easy prescribtions without really spending time with patients. Although these drugs seem to work, they can be very harmful to kids in the long run.

Now that this problem has been addressed and recognized, I think that steps need to be taken quickly to save these children's wellbeing. The use of unneeded medical drugs can seem to be good on the outside, but really hurt the neurological system of the child in question. I think that more time and energy needs to be spent in the foster care system to ensure that kids are treated properly, and not being taken advantage of.

I think it's great that Egypt is free from Mubarack and is holding fair elections. I hope the parliament will make a fair and just constitution for the Egyptian people. They deserve it after Mubarack. I suppose this new parliament could stay in power and we'd be back to where we were before, but I'm hoping for the best.

Teen accused of pot possession in Indonesia sentenced to 2 months

A 14 year old Australian who wishes to remain anonymous was sentenced to 2 months in prison for drug possession and use charges in Indonesia. considering time already spent in jail he will be released on the 4th of december. Indonesia has some of the strictest drug laws in the world and the maximum penalties for some offenses is death. He was contacted by phone by the Australian Prime Minister. He is not the only Australian serving time in Indonesia for drug related charges. There are currently 2 on death row and 6 serving life sentences.

I find this a very harsh approach to drugs. In the USA it may not be legal but many teens do drugs. I don't think that if you are arrested on purely drug charges you should be able to get the death penalty. The law which allows for people to avoid prison to undergo rehab but only if they can prove they are an addict is not right because if they cant prove they are addicts then why are you jailing them so harshly.I find that drug laws in Indonesia are too harsh and this case should have just ended with the teen being deported in the first place

I just read an article on how a dog saved the lives of a 7 year old and a 2 year old girl. The girls saw a brown snake in their back yard and their dog came to the rescue and grabbed the snake and the dog killed the snake. The dog saved the lives of the two little girls but 12 hours later the mom found that the dog was bitten by the snake.
I think that what the dog did was very heroic and it is unfortunate that the snake was able to bite the dog. The dog is in treatment and the dog is making a full recovery and im glad the dog is going to be able to survive.

i read an article about the death of Penn State football coach Joe Paterno. He died from lung cancer. Even though he was involed in the sex abuse scandal he was admired by many people and will always be. The university is considering appropriate ways to honor his legacy, since he has made a huge impact on the people on the football team and the people who have attended Penn State.
I think its sad that he has pasted away and will missed by many people. I don't watch football or know that much about it, I didn't know him until the sex abuse problem came on the news. By reading the article he seemed to be admired by many people. I hope they find a good way to pay respect to him.
