Current Event #19: Crisis at the Pump

Current Event #19: Crisis at the Pump
Gas prices eased Tuesday, but prices still top $4 in some U.S. cities.
Due: Friday, March 9th, 2012

Recent surges at the gas pump has caused American consumers to question the politics of the President and several other campaigning presidential candidates. Gas prices have been escalating rapidly across the country at record pace and has been slated to reach $5 per gallon by the time summer hits. CNN recently posted an article on its website regarding this economic hardship on most American citizens.

What You Will Do:

***Please note that your responses should be in detailed paragraph form. Be sure to explain your points in well-thought out sentences to reflect each question in its entirety.

1. Read the CNN article and view the video posted on the page to help you respond to the following questions: http://money.cnn.com/2012/03/06/markets/gas-prices-aaa/index.htm?hpt=hp_t3

2. How has your family dealt with the rise of gas prices at the pump? Explain. (Examples: Carpooling/"Slugging", less travel, biking, walking, public transportation, etc.) Will the price of gas change the way you and your family travel and/or commute to work and school, etc.?

3. What advice can you offer surrounding the burden of gas prices to the President, as well as the presidential candidates campaigning for American's vote in the upcoming elections?

4. Discuss your thoughts on Americans developing and finding new energy sources, to help accommodate the constant demands of fuel for automobiles in the near future.

My family rarely talks about the economy around my sister and I, so I do not know the exact effects it has on us. My dad owns a small business, so he drives a lot to different areas to sell his merchandise. The gas price must have an impact on us because the money off of the business makes up a large portion of our family income. The increase in gas may change our lives; it would definitely make us more cautious.

The most obvious suggestion I have for Obama is to attempt to lower gas prices. It seems that many countries are putting a high demand on oil production and I think the difference in currency ties in to this. Different values for the same substance is a tiring matter and makes countries anxious because money is an important factor for an economy. It is a difficult to claim that one can solve this crisis since oil is one of our most prominent energy source.

It is important to find a new energy source but it will be difficult to find one that is plentiful and flexible in its functions. Oil is used for a variety of things and its importance and demands has been a growing problem in the years. Creating more battery-powered cars or automobiles that require less oil can be a solution, but I think finding a way to reuse oil can solve this dilemma.

I am not quite sure how the rising gas prices have affected my family. I know that carpooling is always a great option that my parents encourage my brother and I to do. They also encourage us to ride the bus more often to and from school.

I think that Obama should try and lower the gas prices soon. I think that he should begin to look into alternative fuel sources that are more substantial, cheaper, and available for everyone and make the change fast. I think we shouldn't depend on Iran for our oil source, especially if we are having feuds with them right now. My best suggestion would be focusing on new substantial solutions.

I think that it is a great idea to find a new energy source. It will be difficult to find a "perfect" energy source, but I think with the technology we have today, we could do it fast and efficiently. The demands on oil are very high, expensive, and bad for the environment. If we find a better alternative for the future, I think that we would have more control as a country and can start globalizing the alternative energy source for a healthier planet and cheaper energy.

My family has ignored the rising gas prices. We do not need to use cars too much so it doesn’t affect us very much. We can deal with the rising gas prices. I usually take to bus to and from school, and I can walk to many places from my house. My parents don’t really discuss the gas prices.

I think trying to find an alternate fuel source is a very good idea. The world is running out of oil, and we need a back-up plan. As for an immediate solution, I think that the President should try to fix the situation with Iran. It would make people feel safer and get us more oil. I would also suggest trying to lower the gas prices as much and as soon as possible. It would help a lot of families out.

I think finding a new fuel source is an important thing to do. The world will eventually run out of oil or become too polluted to live in, whichever comes first. I think there could be a lot more of safer and more effective ways to make things go. It would be much better in the long run than getting into wars over oil.

My family has not done anything differently in spite of these events. This is because gas runs our lives. Without it we would be motionless. If prices get so high as to cause much financial problems, I would have no idea what to do. But my dad already bikes to work and my sister carpools, so the price increase didn’t affect my family all that much.

Well mainly this fluctuation has come from the instability of governments that controls the majority of our oil. This inflation in gas prices has NOTHING to do with the earths supply running out. So just wait for it to become stable, take action, or get your own oil.

So you hear this new thing called solar power. It runs itself for free, and anybody can get it. So why does not everyone just pop a panel on their car and drive forever? Its not because we hate the earth and want to spends extra money, it’s just not efficient enough to power anything well but lighting systems. Think of this: which makes more power? Just warming up in the sun, or lighting a highly combustible liquid. I hear all these people saying we should just buy electric cars, they work and they save the earth. Well lets just think of were you get that power in your batteries. Hint: not from a solar panel, but a coal plant. So you just switched from oil to coal, congrats. We just need to get better sources of oil and coal.

To deal with the rising gas prices my family has been having me carpool a bit more and not going on as many trips. I also walk to school everyday which saves gas. I don't think the rising gas prices will affect my family's travel plans at all really. Some advice I might give to the president is to invest more money in public transportation or try to find some oil in America. Finding alternate recources to be used as fuel is really important so we can have something else to use besides gas.

The rising gas prices have not hit my family too hard yet. We do try our best to carpool and limit the miles we drive; however, it has not put a finical burden on us. If the gas prices were cheaper we might be more willing to travel and take long car trips than we are now. My brother and I ride the bus to school almost every day and that saves us a tremendous amount of money. Both my parents have a bit of a commute to work each day so that’s where we use the most amount of gas.

I think in order for the President to gain more votes around election time, he should lower gas prices as much as he can. If I were him, I would go into some research about an alternative fuel source. Anything to give the public a little hope and a little relief would be good for his image. As far as others running for President; they should promise the public that their first priority after being elected is to lower gas prices. If they continue to stress how important it is to them, people might actually start to believe it.

I fully support the idea of finding an alternative fuel source. Eventually, we will run out of oil supply and will be forced to anyway. In order for another fuel source to work, it must be cheap, efficient, and accessible to everyone. It will only be successful if every car uses it, instead of being a specialty item. I have no idea what this might be, but with today’s technology we should definitely be able to figure it out.

In truth the gas prices haven't affected me very much. Our car gets about 40 miles to the gallon (and isn't a hybrid) and we are able to walk or bike a lot of places.

There are several reasons to be for or against oil, and none of them have to do with the environment. When you buy most of your oil from groups that you are either at war with or are direct supporters of the ones you're at war with you shouldn't be surprised that prices fluctuate. Five dollars a gallon is a lot here, but in Europe the price is Eight EUROS a gallon. Also, in terms of investing in alternate sources of energy, that should not be our goal but ending reliance on foreign oil should be. What went up in demand when solar power hit the market place? Flat land for solar farms in the arab desert, and as Parker said, electric cars don't help the environment unless the source of their power isn't a pollutant. And when people invested a tremendous amount of time in "Natural Gas" they found that all it really did was toxify the water supply and pollute even more as it was being extracted. If you really want to help the earth and the economy and the political climate, alternative energy is not the answer, but locally developed and managed oil sources are.

I don't think the gas prices has got to my family yet but if it became a serious problem then I guess carpooling and taking public rides is an option. My family hasn't been traveling in a while so I think it's all cool. I usually ride to school with my sister but I think we'll have to ride the bus soon.

I think President Obama should try to lower the prices if it's possible but I really think they should do something about finding some alternate resources to supply our need for fuel. The gas prices will decrease and then increase again next year until a high price becomes an average until we find another resource.

I think maybe it's not the fuel that is the problem but people who uses it. I think people should use some other type of transportation to get somewhere like riding a bike or just walking. Maybe we don't need to find a resource but we only need to decrease the high usage.

I’m very happy to hear that the gas prices have finally started to come down again. Because my sister and I participate in many activities and my mother works all the way in Cary, our family consumes about 25 gallons of oil a week on a daily bases. After the recession started, although it hasn’t affected our family’s financial decisions quite yet, my parents, my mother particularly, have been complaining about the gas prices and how quickly they rise. Consuming 25 gallons at about 4 dollars per gallon, that’s $100 each week that we must save for our gas money. That’s a lot of money so I’m extremely happy that, thanks to Obama, our gas has become somewhat cheaper.

I think that the voting Americans should choose a president that cares about the environment and renewable energy. Some candidates, mainly left wing, don’t even believe in climate change. In that case, it would be in the best interest of America to not vote for those idiots. I think although we should continue drilling the ocean floors and depleting our earth of its fossil fuels, we should continue researching for efficient and cheap resources that we can power our cars and electricity with. I think different choices of oil or electrical cars would be a good topic to look into.

My familly dislike the fact that the gas prices are going up. Right not we are using three cars and all three of the cars has a good amount of mileage on them. Right now my mom is looking for a car and specifically a SUV. But my dad was telling her the other day that she might want to look for another type of car because of the gas prices going up. So I think the gas prices should stay the say the same or go down.

My advice to the new president is to STOP the rise of the gas. Why raise the prices when you know a lot of people use gas. Just doesn’t make since why you would like to see people struggle when you know they use gas a lot. For the next president STOP RAISING THE PRICES FOR GAS!

If gas gets to the point where it’s too much then I suggest that people go electrical cars because, you can charge your car at home instead of going other places to charge it. Even though they do take gas you can still use them because they don’t use gas until the electric goes out. Just be prepared for anything that comes.

I think I could agree with many Americans by saying that gas prices are just way to high. My family hasn’t really said much about it this time yet because I think they were expecting it from the last time we had a really big sprout in gas prices. My family strongly encourages car pooling to extra curricular activities. It is a shame that you cant even get buy the type of car that you really want like SUV’s because they take up so much gas which is a lot of money just to put in your tank. Also gas is nearly 5 dollars a gallon; you would have to spend a whole 20 dollars for 4 gallons just to take you up the street and back.

I think that Obama should defiantly consider lower gas prices and make it happen very soon. Like many people say he should look into an alternate fuel production as well as cheaper and more available for the whole community. I think this would be a great way for Obama to stay president. For the upcoming elections I think people should look at how this has taken a toll on America and try to change it.

Finding a new energy source would be a drastic change, but difficult. We use oil for a lot of things and we still can, but that doesn’t mean it has to be that expensive. Although I don’t think should make anymore cars that run off of energy because that only happens if the sun is out. I do think that we could make more that you could charge. I know this is going to be a hard task but with all the new inventions and technology I think that it could very much be done.

  11. Oil (precious, precious oil) is a finite resource and thus we cannot act as though we have an unlimited supply of it. That being said, I do not think that we have to immediately cease using gas; on the contrary, we should continue using gas as long as possible. A finite resource should be used until none is left, but that doesn't mean we cannot prepare for when oil is no longer the cornerstone of our automotive fuel sources. New technologies and improvements to old ones could help a lot, and even if all we succeed in doing is changing the rate at which we consume oil, then at least we'd have a few more years of that.

On the subject of gas prices, it is ridiculous to believe that we are paying too much for gas. The basic principles of supply and demand state that when supply decreases but demand remains high, prices will go up; therefore, when we deal with the most dramatically limited resource on the planet (which is destroyed irreparably on consumption) it is only logical that prices should increase. Worldwide, many other first-world countries experience far higher gas prices where the government does not subsidize: in the United Kingdom, for example, gas (as of 2008) was twice as expensive as it is here, now, at $8.01/gallon; in Germany, in the same year, gas was twenty cents more expensive than in the United Kingdom at $8.21/gallon. (Statistics: http://www.gtz.de/de/dokumente/gtz2009-en-ifp-full-version.pdf)

I do not believe that we should attempt to reduce gas prices, because then people would not be financially motivated to prepare for the end of oil, but if I were to attempt to lower prices, here's what I would do: I would cultivate allies in the regions that produce gasoline; I would depose those regimes which did not allow the United States to purchase gas cheaply if those regimes were unpopular or moderately popular; and I would invade those nations in the regions that produce gas which would not allow me to purchase gas cheaply and whose regimes were popular. Basic stuff, but it would work for a few years as long as nobody cared about dead soldiers or enormous budget deficits. The course of action outlined above is by no means the best for the United States, nor is it the one I would adopt, given a choice. We cannot allow gas prices to drive our foreign policy.

My family carpools to many after school activities. My brother has to go to play hockey in Raleigh and other long drives, so he carpools with his friends to reduce the amount of gas needed for the weekly trips. I have to go to Sunday school in Durham, so I carpool with people in my neighborhood. We also carpool with friends for dance classes. The only public transportation I use is the bus to and from school, but I think this is helpful because many people get transported at once instead of separate cars. Over the summer we bike to nearby places instead of driving, but that’s hard to do in the winter. I don’t think that we will change much as the gas price rises, except maybe driving to places less often.

I don’t know what advice to give (because I don’t know much on the subject), but I guess I’d want whoever ends up being the President to try their hardest on lowering the prices. If they look for alternative sources, we may find a solution to help with our problem.

I think it’s necessary for our country now to find a new energy source, or sources. I think that solar energy is a great alternative for many energy sources, because the sun can provide a lot of clean energy. Using solar energy for cars would work because we always have a demand for fuel, and the sun’s energy is ceaseless, while with oil we will eventually run out…

Gas has not affected my family very much. We still drive to most places instead of walking. Gas will not really change my family’s usage of gas because my family desperately needs gas. My family is still going to go on vacations and drive around town. Chapel Hill is such a small town that you need to drive almost everywhere. The only part of Chapel Hill that you can walk around in is Franklin Street, and we go on Franklin St. every once in a while.

I would tell the president that he needs to quit raising gas prices. Now, they are making gas out of trash and recycling. We could make our gas from that instead of oil. Some families cannot afford gas, and we need to use that money on more important things. The government needs money, but the government usually puts money in the really big things that are not always as important as the small things.

I think we do need Americans to create new energy sources. We are running out of energy and we really need energy to do everything in our daily lives. Also, there are other people on our planet that need the energy. It will help everyone.

  14. My family hasn't made any major changes to they way we live other than pay more attention to when the gas prices are lowest. At this point as a society, we can't just drop everything and stop using gas because the price went up 20 cents. People have jobs that require them to drive throughout the day or at least to get to work.

Let me first say that I am in no position to tell the president and/or the presidential candidates how they should handle rising gas prices. It is my opinion, however, that the government should be subsidizing green energy and electric vehicles as opposed to gas.

Our exploring "green" technologies is absolutely necessary for us. Eventually we WILL run out of gas and we WILL need to use some other fuel for our transportation devices. The ultimate goal should be to develop an electric passenger plane. If we could develop an electric passenger plane, than all other electric forms of transportation would be immensely easier to make.

My mother complains about gas prices not very often. Im sure it does affect my family but i haven't noticed anything different. I just asked my mom and she said that its not affecting her that much because she isn't working, she is retired. So she has no reason to travel distances to work or anything like that. Even with me the only extra-curricular activities i do are school related and we live two miles away from the school so it still doesn't affect us.

The advice i would give to gas stations would be to raise the prices of its convenience store items such as cigarettes and chewing tobacco. If people are so desperate for a cigarette that they will pay more money for it then its a bittersweet victory. Because it brings in a larger income but it also means that people are becoming more addicted.

It is very important that we find a new energy source so then we wont be so dependent on oil. Im not very sure how the new energy source would affect the economy but it would be very groundbreaking to discover it and give America one more thing to add to its legacy.

My family has not dealt with a lot of problems dealing with gas, as matter of fact my parents barely ever talk about the economy or gas around my sister and I; but my family has been carpooling. In my family I would get rides from friends to places that we go together; or coming home from a place.

The most obvious suggestion would be for President Obama to lower the gas prices. Even though the world is slowly running out of gas the oil production in countries, But this fact doesn’t have to change the prices of gas since we do have other types of transportation, also more and more people are getting new cars and the increase of cars would definitely have an impact on how much gas would be left.

Finding a new energy source is vital in the society that we live in today because many people rely on technology, cars, or other new inventions that are introduced into the society that we live in today. Also I think that voting Americans should also look for people who care about the environment and about how people have to work so hard and make just enough money for a couple gallons of gas.

My family, like most American families often uses the gas pumps. This is to fulfill our large demand of Gas, for vehicular transportation in our family. We have not done much about the rising gas prices yet. For we can not live our same lifestyle without our cars. When gas hits $5 a gallon we might have to make a large change in our as consumption.

I have always believed gas should be regulated to be expensive, for we are running out. The Government should put a tax on gas, that enables them to use the money to find alternate energy, and increase the public transportation budget. We obviously need transportation, but do we necessarily need to kill our planet, and oil supply to do it?

Most of the driving my family does is essential, so there is really nothing we can do unless my dad rides the family pegasus to work, but that aint happening. So, i will really not be effected by these price hikes. The people who will really be affected are the citizens of atlantis. The oil companies are going to step up the drilling, so they have a greater chance of hitting the giant oil patch that the city of atlantis is built on.

The Pres, Mr. Obama, should definitely try to stop the iranians from blocking the strait of hormuz, because if the strait were blocked, prices would skyrocket. This is why we need a man of action in the oval office, like ron paul. I think that Obama should send in seal team 6, as well as teams 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7. they should plant bombs on all iranian navy ships in order to prevent a blockade.

As for any alternate energy, i think the safest and best alternative is thousands upon thousand of hamsters in wheels running over and over and over in a power plant. if we did this, it would be the largest advance in organic power since the invention of the horse

My family deals with rising gas prices by using my mom’s car more because it is more fuel efficient than my dad’s. We also try to save money in other places to meet the rising gas prices. We also used our cars most likely less than average anyway so using cars less is more normal to us. I think that if the price of gas gets to high it will definetely affect our transportation. We will cut down on using our cars even more and probably try to walk and bike to places more often. I believe this will be easy but will not affect my way of getting to school because my mom drives by my bus stop so I sometimes ride up to the bus stop with her but mostly ride my bike up.

I think that the canidate that runs his or her campaign on the basis of lowering the cost of gas, food and other essential items will do well in this election. This affects everyone who lives in the US, so there will not be anyone who doesn’t care about this. I believe that when America develops efficient and effective alternatives to fossil fuels that gas prices will drop and there will be less and less cars that run on gas, so we can use clean energy for transportation. Whichever source of energy is cheaper will be the one that people will want to use for what they can. Fossil fuels will run out eventually, and when that time gets closer and closer gas prices will keep rising while clean, renewable energy sources will be avaliable forever. I think that fracking is not a good idea for a different energy source because of the massive environmental impact. I think that when renewable, clean energy becomes avaliable will be the primary choice over fracking and gasoline.

A lot of the transportation these days runs on oil and we should find another source. I do think that the president should also lower the gas prices and people happy.
I think it is important for us to find a new source of energy because oil isn’t going to last forever and if we run out of oil what source of energy will we have. A new energy would be great because we could conserve the oil for when we really need it. If we find a new energy source it can change the way we live today and change the future.

The rising gas prices has effected my family in a lot of way. My friends and I have been carpooling to save gas money. Also i take the school bus much as much as possible. My mom has an energy efficient car, but even though it is energy efficient, our weekly gas price is about 60 to 70 dollars. I think that if the gas prices keeps rising, it will effect our way of transportation. My parents will most likely take buses to places, walk, ride my bike or carpool more often. I am glad that the gas prices are decreasing now and I hope it will continue to decrease.

I don't think that the rising gas prices are entirely bad either. This way, we could find other sources of fuel since our oil is running out. I think that the canidates should talk about a resasonable price for gas. And also help to develop more energy efficent fuels that would not harm the environment. Exploring new technologies will help our future with our gas supplies.

My family has been affected somewhat by the rise in gas prices, but compared to many other countries worldwide, America’s gas prices have risen relatively little in the recent past. I would tell all of the upcoming presidential candidates, including President Obama, to focus on creating sources of alternative energy in order to decrease our dependence on oil as a resource. The demands for fuel will likely rise in the near future, as our population is growing and new sustainable sources of oil have yet to be found, and so I think that the more independence we have in regards to using oil as a resource, the better off we will be.

This independence can come in the form of finding more sources of alternative energy, as well as making it easier for people to find environmentally sound modes of transportation—for example, encouraging people to walk or bike, and directing our attention to creating more fuel-efficient cars. I think that the main reason why some of these changes are not happening right now is that we are so focused on restoring and maintaining our economy that we have neither the time nor money required to put serious thought into reducing our environmental impact.

My family hasn’t done much to cut down on gas in the past. We’ve done a little carpooling and some public transportation but we mostly just drive anyway. If the price of gas goes way up, we’ll start making more efforts to drive less. It could end up being easier to cut back but I don’t think it would be. I think that the president should work more on not the actual prices, but how to cut back on the fuel that’s making it so bad. The inflation is hurting many people and if it isn’t fixed, there could be permanent damage on the economy, and the people. Because of this, if candidates want votes, then they have to work on the gas prices.

I think that it’s very important that we find new fuel sources. We need to not have to rely on other countries just so our country can run. Getting new sources would be good for the economy and the environment. With a new, better source, we could end this terrible recession for good. The need for energy and fuel is only going to increase so we should get ahead to match it now.

My family has not changed so far, I think that maybe if the price in gas went far up then we would start to cut down.
I think that we should vote for the candidates that care about the environment. Some of the candidates are not concerned at all about the climate and I think that it would benefit us to vote for those who do.
I believe that we should continue getting gas but also we need to work on using other things to make energy or create electric cars to help us.

My family has done a couple of things in order to cut down the amount of time we are driving, and therefore the amount of money we spend on gas. We carpool to and from sporting events, and practices, and my two sisters and I all take the school bus instead of being driven to school. However, in this area it is harder to cut back on driving as it is in bigger cities. We can't easily walk many place, and therefore have to drive. We also don't have as many options for public transportation as we don't have a subway system. Though the free public bus system is a great addition to our community, my family doesn't get much use out of it as it doesn't go anywhere that we need to drive, and it doesn't stop very close to our house.

Gas prices will definitely play a role in the upcoming presidential elections. As I am not a politician, I don't have much advice for President Obama. While gas prices are a prominent issue in America, I would urge people not to vote for a candidate based on what they have said about lowering gas prices. Lowering gas prices, to some extent, is out of our control. I would also recommend to voters to analyze what the candidates are saying they will do about gas prices, and consider whether or not their promise seems reasonable.

I think our focus should be on developing a source of clean, renewable energy. One day we will not be able to rely on the same fuel we do today. This is especially important, not only for the price, but also because the demand for gas will only continue to grow and our supply will not last forever.

My family hasn't changed much of our life to accommodate the new gas prices. Although we do carpool a lot. But if prices continue to increase i think it would be best for us to start cutting down on gas usage. The inflation of gas prices is something to be considered very seriously as even now, it is effecting many families. I hope that we find some sort of alternative fuel source soon, otherwise gas prices will continue to increase and more people will be effected.

I think our focus should be find an alternative fuel source. We rely so heavily on it that if it were to run out, we would be nearly completely lost. Sure solar power and other sources are starting to take over but at an extremely slow rate that it is still rarely used. Our demand for gas will only grow and once our supply runs out, then what?

I personally am happy to hear that the gas prices are starting to decrease. My family and I do a lot of road trips, go out, go to friends houses, etc. And after a while it all adds up. My family has not been really effected. My family has offered to car pool with other families, started walking places, etc.
I think that the Americans who are able to vote should vote for a president who cares about the environment and renewable energy. Personally, the gas price rise might be a huge problem, if not for me or my family, maybe for the rest of the US. Plus, if Iran decides to do like they were doing before and try to develop nukes, the price of gas might get even worse. To his credit, however, Obama has done quite a good job reducing the dependence on foreign oil, among other things (such as ending the war in Iraq and putting a hole in Bin Laden’s face). I do believe that the price of gas is going to be a major issue in this year’s election, seeing as Romney already said that he would lower the price of gas, something I’m not quite sure how he’s going to do. (Supply and demand, HURR)

Obama has already done a great many things for the US. I just hope that he continues doing so, especially after the two terms of Dubya. If he continues to do good things for the US, he might well win this election (I honestly hope he does, the republicans are insane). I also hope that he’ll look into more “green” energy sources, like solar panels and wind farms. Both of those are not as efficient as gas. Nuclear energy? Maybe, but then we get paranoid if anyone else tries to get it (IRAN).Electric cars might help, but where do you think they get all the electricity? (Hint: it comes from what Santa puts in your stockings if you’ve been an idiot) But just for the record, fossil fuels are a LIMITED resource. So if we use too much, we’re screwing things up for future generations like mine. So we need to find another way.

It’s most likely not going to affect my family too much. I live right across the street from school, and I can get away with leaving home after the first bell has rung and still not be late. Both my parents ride the bus for the larger portion of their commute, and we rarely use both cars at once. We rarely travel, except for the occasional weekend trip to northern Virginia. Unless I move, this “gas crisis” is not going to affect me too much.

My family has done a multitude of things in order to cope with rising gas prices. For example, we now carpool with other people all the time in order to cut back on our usage of gas. My family has also tried to buy more fuel efficient cars, that way we do not have to constantly go fill up our cars at the gas station. Driving places is essential to my family, but we try to conserve fuel by carpooling as well as taking public transportation.

My advice to President Obama is to to try and do what ever it takes in order to lower gas prices in America. We as a nation cannot afford to keep paying such high gas prices. This is a time of economic uncertainty, and if people can barely afford to put food on their tables, what makes you think that they can afford rising gas prices. The same advice goes out to anyone who wants to run for president.

I think that it is an excellent idea for America to try to find new energy sources, and go green. We should be making more things like electric cars, wind energy, and solar panels. It is a necessity that our country eventually find other sources of energy, because we are eventually are going to run out of oil. People, like I said cannot afford to put food on their tables, so how can they afford higher gas prices? Things need to change.

THe rising gas prices has not really affected my family. Yes, they do complain about the rising prices. However, we still drive as much as before when gas was cheaper. It is affecting our budget, but not so substantially. It hasn't really changed the way of our lives, but it probably has affected many others.

Obama does not want the US to simply rely on oil for their transportation needs. In fact, today a bill to start the Keystone pipeline project was rejected by the senate. Oil will eventually run out and there is nothing we can do about that. The only advice I would give Obama is to start investing more money in renewable energy and things of that sort. He has begun to do that as well, but it will not happen overnight.

I believe solar energy is one of the most efficient ways to produce energy as it causes zero carbon emissions and really all you need is a solar panel. We have begun to start using more and more renewable energy sources. Many cars today are becoming more fuel efficient and some are even electric. With our technology, I'm sure we will find a way to stop relying on oil.

The rise of gas prices has not really affected my family as much. One thing I have noticed is that we do travel less then we use to but we still travel somewhat a lot. I think that if gas prices continue raising some of our trips will have to stop.
I think that Obama should try and lower the gas prices as soon as possible. I think that he should begin to look into alternative fuel sources because as of now gas prices are just too high, and it is giving America a huge set back. I think we shouldn't depend on Iran for our oil source, especially if we are having issues with them. We should not depend on another country we need to be independent.
I know that it will be very hard for us to find an alternative fuel source but we need to really start looking for sources. Oil is one very important thing that we use; the oil we use now is very bad for the environment, so we need to start looking for better eco friendly sources.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The rising gas prices haven't really affected my family much. We carpool occasionally, but it's generally not purely because of gas prices. I don't think gas prices will affect us that much, and hasn't changed what we do.

I think that we should focus more on finding alternative forms of energy. The US depends heavily on other countries for oil, and it would be a disaster if even a few of those fuel sources stopped. There are other sources of power, and they should be utilized and taken to our advantage.

I think it's a good idea to find other forms of fuel for automobiles, etc. Many car companies are already creating cars that utilize other forms of energy, and we should accomodate to those types of vehicles by investing in cleaner and more efficient energy. Finding clean sources of energy would not only cut America's dependence on foreign oil, but also would help the environment and the ongoing efforts to be green.

The rising prices for gas have not really effected my family. The only thing it has really done is make my parents take detours to get to the better gas station; which in the long run costs more. It does impact many other people's lives though. For my family however, no we are not as effected as I predicted.

President Obama does believe in renewable energy for transportation. As we progress the government becomes more and more 'green'. Gasoline will run out, there is no doubt. Maybe not in our generation or the next, but it will eventually. By then we should have multiple reliable sources for transport.

I believe wind energy for cars would be very convenient. The turbines could be under the car, and as the car travels it can turn, producing energy. There are also no carbon emissions from it. Companies are becoming more open to the idea of renewable energy and I have no doubt that we'll be able to dodge this oil crisis.

For my family, the gas prices rising has not made too big of an impact, and so far we have not been compelled to do anything majorly different recently. However for the past few years we have been trying to save a little bit of gas every now and then just because it is better. For example I ride the bus to school, and sometimes I ride my bike places. Gas is very important in our lives so I think that it is important that we conserve it.

If President Obama continues to put efforts into green technology, then I think that it will help his chances for the election very much, especially because some of the republicans do not support these technologies as much. Also I think that saving energy and gas will help stop global warming so it is good for more than just our gas prices.

It is definitely very important for us to find new energy sources. Not only are these important because they will reduce climate change but also because one day all of the gasoline is going to run out. Although it may be in a long time, if it runs out and we have no backup, then a lot will change because we have so much technology these days and without power we would be helpless.

To conserve our gas, my family takes shorter routes and carpools with friends that are going to the same place. The prices have shot up drastically, and this is how we are coping to use less gas. Also, instead of meeting my dad for dinner after he gets off work, we wait for him to get home and we all go in one car so that we don’t have to use two.
I think lowering gas prices will help the U.S. at this time. So many are in debt, and by relieving the stress of gas, people could save money and car dealerships would do better. There’s no way gas needs to be this high, it’s essential to most people’s daily transportation and it’s taking money right out of there pockets right and left.
Any other possible energy source would be a huge help to the citizens of America and our economy. Every way to save money is always welcomed and encouraged. I think a lot of problems could be resolved through the reduction of fuel use.

Gas prices have created a big change for many Americans, and it’s going to become a big burden if the prices reach $5 per gallon this summer. It has a big effect to saving money for more than half the population of drivers, but could affect even more people who plan to travel for summer vacations. The dramatic change has not affected my family really because I feel that we save our money wisely and that we control our expenses such as food, entertainment, and other needs. The gas prices have been rising for a few years now and my family and I have still been taking our annual trips to our family and friends’ houses over the summer. So the change in gas prices has not affected us. Fortunately we live close to my dad’s workplace, and he has not needed to change his driving habits yet.
If I were to suggest something to the oncoming candidates of the new presidential election it would be to help our Country not go into a recession by continuing to raise gas prices. President Obama has been raising the prices every year trying to put the money into something important that he thinks we need but when he is hurting many Americans with their loss of money.
I think the electric car idea is a great idea for many Americans to consider for saving money. I know that the electric car is not very popular but it saves money and is healthy for our enviorment. While it is expensive to purchase these cars, in the long run, you can save money if you own an electric car. We should make goals for 2012 on gas prices and car fuel issues and learn from the past. If I were one of the presidential candidates I would definitely promise to fix the growing gas prices to catch the attention of many Americans. There are not many other issues that affect so many Americans, and I would suggest that we begin using some of the United States’ gas reserves to not need as much gas from other countries. This might change the prices in the long run.

Some ways to deal with it is to start funding major research into “green” technology.; This does not solve the immediate proble but will eventually get us off gas dependence. Electric cars are nice, but most get charged by outlets whoi get power from coal so that does not help.

Overall the main thing we have to do is face the fact, we are running out of easily acsessible fuel, and the sooner we fix our dependence the better. we have many companies willing to invest time and money in green stuff, we just need the govt. to give us a jumpstart.

To be honest, I haven’t really talked to my parents about gas prices and how it affects our family. Sometimes my family members might mention how the prices for gas are dramatically going up, but it doesn’t really change how we travel to the places we need to go. I live pretty far away from everything, so it’s hard to transport without a car. Sometimes I might carpool with a friend to save gas for my parents, but even though the gas prices these days are going up, we haven’t drastically changed our ways of going to places.

If I were to give advice to the government about rapid rising gas prices, I would tell the president to lower gas prices as much as possible, if it’s possible. Also, find alternative fuel sources. That would help our economy drastically. I don’t think that many people understand how dangerous rising gas prices are since cars and ride transportation is so important, nowadays. I think that we should emphasize this problem a little better and raise awareness about rising gas prices.

Finding new energy sources is a great idea. We should find new ways to be less dependant on oil. Though the future of America is unpredictable, I think that this could really help the next generations to be more successful and turn out good.

My family has not really done anything for the rising gas prices. I carpool with my friend from practice but that is all we do. I do not think the gas prices will affect my family to much because my parents have bought cars that get very high gas mileage so that we do not have to buy a lot of gas. I do not think that the candidates should lower gas prices. If the gas prices stay at five dollars then less people will be driving trucks and more people will be driving small cars that get better gas mileage.
I think that finding new sources such as electricity should be one of the main goals of the government. We should continue to look into fuel alternatives because gas and oil will eventually run out. When gas runs out people will be using horses or any other mode of transportation instead of driving to work. Also, People will start working closer to home and in big cities.

I haven't done much to deal with the rising gas prices. Maybe once in a while my family will talk about it but it hasn't really changed the way we travel. We still need to use cars to go pretty much everywhere so we really don't do anything to reduce our gas expense.

Something that could be done to reduce dependency on gas is to develop new ways of using energy to power cars. More efficient cars could also be developed to lower the has expense. I believe that lowering gas prices will be a big deal in the upcoming election because no one really wants to pay a lot of money on gas. Whichever candidate does the most to lower gas prices or find alternate sources of energy will probably get quite a bit of extra votes.

Finding alternate forms of energy is a great idea since sooner or later we will run out of gasoline because it is a finite resource. We are using it all up and will soon need to either stop using it for transportation or find a new way to power our vehicles. Finding an alternate source of energy would really help in this respect.

  46. The rise of gas prices has affected my family. My mother's commute to work is a very long drive, so the inflation of gas prices was not in her best interest. We try to reserve gas and not take long car rides, but if necessary we will have to. Although, I take the bus to and from school usually everyday, so in that way we are saving gas.

The burden of gas prices is a big one to be worried about. The majority of people use their own cars for transportation, so a rise in gas prices calls for a strain on many people's wallets. In this current economy, everyone needs to spend their money wisely, and spending a good portion of money on gas is unacceptable, considering it's almost a necessity.

I believe Americans coming up with new energy sources is a really good step towards bettering this situation. If new energy sources are found, it's a gateway towards discovering more and more energy sources in the future. This way we won't need to use so much gasoline and eventually lose all of it.

I think the other presidential election candidates are not very qualified to run a country much less ceasing climbing gas prices. Gas prices topping $4 and nearly reaching five is extremely outrageous even if they are merely in ten cities in the U.S. During this decade, we are sure to have gas prices nearly reaching four dollars per gallon and even topping that, all encompassed in the United States. Resulting from the now expensive gas prices (especially in California), many people took the idea of hitchhiking often. Although this seems dangerous, it conserves/saves peoples money and time.

My family (and mostly me) contribute to time and money savers by carpooling often. Also, I take the bus to and from school, which saves my parents time from having to pick me or my brother up from activities.

Although Gingrich’s intriguing plan to lower/mess around with gas prices does seam appealing to the American masses, what is best (and I believe) is to support public transportation more than gas prices. An example would be to start off with a larger amount of buses per city, that way people will think that their cars will not be of great importance to them anymore. Later on, we can think; how about producing a more stable bus economy, such as introducing bio fuels to them, which have numerous positive effects. From there on, we can produce numerous of more efficient possibilities than those of Gingrich’s.

The gas prices being in the high four dollar range is outrageous. During my life the gas prices have risen almost two dollars a gallon. The reason for this is mostly the problems in the middle east. The middle east is the main source of oil not just for the United States, but for the whole world. One solution is to find more american oil. The problem with that is there isn't enough american oil. We would need to get at least a little oil from the east. Until we find an alternative energy source I believe that the price os gasoline will keep going up.

There are a few ways us as americans can control how much gas we use. The first solution is carpooling. If there are many people going to the same place then carpool. Another thing is to use public transportation. Lastly, one thing that my family tries to do is buy locally. If the product doesn't have to be shipped from China it will take less gasoline to ship, therefore the oil prices won't be as high.

I feel that it is a necessity to find an alternative energy source. If we don't the gas prices will keep going up and it will be harder to buy gas. I think we need to find a practical alteernative energy source. The electric car seem to be the most practical and I think will be a gtood substitute to oil once the companies can get the electric cars to go more than one hundred miles before needing a charge.

the gas prices must be taken with a proverbial grain of salt. they rise and fall with the economy and international economy. i understand they are high at the moment and some struggle, but that being said struggle is inevitable. it is a fact of life. the high prices mean more of my families money goes to gas, but it does not mean we are losing money. we are just equalizing by cutting back on other things. keeping all of this in mind, it is time to find an alternative fuel source if we can that doesnt cost an arm and a leg. then how would one drive anyways? i know. i am a funny kid. no need to say so i already know. the electric cars tend to be high maintenance and have no places to refuel along the roads. this makes them impractical. same goes for other fuels. right now we must simply deal with the prices and wait for them to drop or for a new source to come out, whichever happens first. we must also be careful as fossil fuels are scarce and fracking is quite dangerous.

With the economy the way it’s been, I think that the rapidly rising gas prices are hurting our country. We should be focusing on finding other, more eco-friendly sources of energy. If oil is so hard to find today, think about how rare, and costly, it will be in a few years with even more people driving. My family has been car-pooling and avoiding using the car if we can. We have been looking to get rid of our 10 year old van that uses a lot of gas and replace it with a more efficient car as well.
The only advice I would give to the current presidential candidates would be to fund science-focused companies and studies that are trying to find a more efficient, eco-friendly, and cheaper source of fuel. We cannot go on using so much coal and oil; they are starting to really take a toll on the health of both the economy and the environment.
I am completely for using better sources of fuel, if you couldn’t already tell. I think that we should make a combination of solar-power, wind-power, and nuclear power to depend on, so that if one of them proves to be harmful or not plentiful enough to support the country, we will have other options.

My family hasn't really done much to deal with the rising gas prices. The prices don't change the fact that we still drive everywhere. Occasionally when my parents fill up our cars they will complain about how high the prices have gotten, but that's the only time when we talk about it. Occasionally my parents will complain about it when the news talks about the rising prices.

I think that the U.S should try to find another, better, energy source instead of using up so much oil. 1: becuase it is not good for the community 2: becuase it will save the U.S and millions of family money. Later on, we can think; how about producing a more stable bus economy.

I don't think the gas prices has got to my family yet but if it became a serious problem then I guess carpooling and taking public rides is an option. My family hasn't been traveling in a while so it's okay. If oil is so hard to find today, it will be even worse in years to come. It's time for new energy

The advice I would give would be to find a new, cleaner source of energy to use instead of oil. This would greatly benefit us, because then it would help our environment, and reduce our dependency on foreign oil. Although gas prices are not the most important things for a candidate, whichever one has the best opinions will probably get some extra votes.

I think that the Americans who are able to vote right now should vote for a president who cares about the environment and renewable energy. Some candidates don't care at all about the climate, and don't believe there is a problem. In this case, it would be beneficial for America to not vote for those candidates. I think while we should continue drilling the ocean floors and depleting our earth of its fossil fuels, we should continue to research for efficient and cheap resources that we can make into energy. I believe finding different choices of oil or electrical cars could also be a topic further inspected.

my family does not really discuss the gas prices with my sister and i except for exclamations when we drive by the gas station. my dad commutes three hours a day so it must cut in though I'm not sure how much. my family already does a lot of alternative travel like biking or walking so I'm not sure how this will affect us.

obviously try to lower it any way possible though that may be out of the question. this also cannot be just one country the whole world has to put effort in to make this happen though having superpowers weigh in might help.

i don't know but so far we are not yet right on the verge of a great new technology so it might be a while. people thought that electric cars would save us then they said it would be the hydrogen cars be we still can not use those technologies practically.

While i do believe that te prices are really high my family has really not been having problems with gas problems, and if they have they probley have talk about it when im not there.

Things people can do to waist less money on gas is drive cars that put in a lot of miles per gallon like a prius or something. They can also car pool which my family has been a part of for events and trips, you could also ride the city bus which in chapel hill is free.

I really hope gas prices get lower.

My family has dealt with the rising gas prices by just not driving places we dont really need to go, and carpooling to work and school. I take the city bus to school every morning so my parents don't have to drive me.
I think the president and/or the presidential canditates should really consider inveseting in more green and less expensives sources for fuel, as well as being less depent on the supply of foreign oils, which could really help the price drop. I think it would be great if car companies would consider making their cars hyrid or electric like the prius, and also consider making them smaller. If cars like ferraris and hummers had more ecofriedly and price-friendly fuel sources, America would be alot better off.

My family and especially my dad drive a lot. My dad has to commute to Raleigh almost everyday. The rising gas prices have made it difficult to drive everywhere but haven’t affected us that much. I have always carpooled whenever I could but my parents to do not bike to work or anything like that.

I think right now Obama is on the right track by putting money into the alternative energy industry. I think the public should keep on pushing though to find a new source of energy. Mitt Romney said he will not lower gas prices which was a bad move on his part because that’s one thing the public want.

I think trying to find an energy source that isn’t gas is a great idea that will save millions of dollars a year for regular Americans. I think we need to keep on trying to get a good reliable source.

The rise gas prices will effect my family a lot because my parents drive me to and from soccer practice three times a week. The soccer practices can be as far away as 35 minutes. To minimize the amount of driving I carpool with three other people so that it keeps the carbon emissions down, and saves parents the trouble of driving all that way.
Some advice I would give to the president is to try and find a way to lower the gas prices. Also to encourage people to bike, and carpool much more.
America is trying to cut down on carbon emissions by making more energy efficient cars that run on energy. That is something that the car industries need to keep developing so that we can eventually run on completely energy powered cars.

  64. The raise in gas prices has thankfully not affected my family much. Although the prices are high and are not economically stabilizing to many American families, I do not view them as such a bad thing.
I believe that we as Americans have grown to need gas way too much. It is not good for our pocketbooks or the environment. I think that with higher gas prices people will think twice before driving along distance, and might consider using public transportation that is cost-effective and positive for the environment.
I think Obama knows what he is doing in regards to gas prices. I believe that he will try to lower them to the best of his ability, being that it is an election year, and he is looking to stay in office.

  65. The raise in gas prices has not affected my family all that much. Our car is very fuel efficient and we don't have to refill often. i think that that many countries depend on gas way too much. i suggest we find a new and less expensive way to get gas or start using it a lot less. I think its a good idea to find a new way to get gas because soon a lot of people won't be able to get gas.

Rising gas prices hasn't affected my family all that much, but my parents do complain about it a lot. People in general do use a lot of gas which is also part of the problem. We need to be consuming less gas so that the prices will go down. Now another thing we have to do is reduce our dependency on foreign oil. We are paying way more than we could if we drilled the majority of our own oil. It's really quite pathetic when we have to try and act like we're friends with countries like Iran just to get oil. However the best way to deal with gas prices is to get rid of gas all together with other technologies. It's what we're going to have to do since eventually the oil will run out.

This will not affect my family much, because we have a very sucessful business going on. But it might concern the families that do not have at least one parent that is employed.

I do not see a reason to see the point of rising the gas cost. If many people are unemployed than why would you want to raise the price of gas and make it difficult for the unemployed to buy the gas. They should bring the price down.

We should find a new energy source, because we will soon exhaust the energy source we are now using. There are a lot of ways we could come up with, to prevent the idea of exhausting the "materials" we have now.

i always hear my parents complainning anpout the rise of gas prices because they just keep going up and up. i see my parents stop at the gas station at least twice a week, and i know that they are getting tired of getting gas. i dont think that it is effecting the way we travel right now becuase we dont really go on vacation that much. but i think that it is going to start6 effecting us during the summer when we are out of school and we are going to start wanting to go places.

i dont even see why they are rising the prices so high. i think that it is pointless. i advise the president to lower the gas prices a lot because this is not helping anybody by rising them.

  69. The raising gas prices are a definite problem. However, this problem really can't be solved. The more we use our gas, the quicker we will run out, and the more we run out of gas, the higher the prices get. We are safe on fossil fuels for a while, but once we run out, what are we going to do? we better find out a way to make something run on water or something like that or else we just won't be able to use vehicles. Now granted, at the rate we are advancing in technology, i think we will definitely be able to figure that all out, but for now we will just have to keep on raising the gas prices until it is very, very expensive.

Gas has not affected my family that much. We still drive to most places instead of walking. Gas will not really change my family’s usage of gas because my family desperately needs gas. My family is still going to the things they usually do.
I think the presidential canditates should really consider inveseting in more green and less expensives sources for fuel, as well as being less depent on the supply of foreign oils, which could really help the price drop. the candidates can benefit from this too, saying that they will lower the price of gas will get them more votes. but until they dont get lower people are going to complain.
