Sensitive documents found in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade confetti
    Chris Boyette
    CNN 11/26/12
    http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/26/us/new-york-confidential-confetti/index.html?hpt=hp_bn1

In this article the author talks about how a Manhattan attorney was watching the parade and he saw a piece of paper that had a social security number on it. Somehow shredded police reports from Nassau County ended up in the parade. The Nassau County police department is currently conducting an investigation on the matter. Looking closer at the confetti they found that it not only had social security numbers on it but also birthdays, banking information, other information, even information about Mitt Romney’s motorcade to the presidential debate held in that county. A Macey’s spokesperson later said that they had no knowledge of this, and that they use only commercially manufactures confetti, but that it was not unusual for spectators to bring their own confetti.
You would think that they would keep personal information like this under better protection, but I guess not if someone just threw it in the Macey’s parade. What would make someone want to do this? Did they not think about what could happen to all the people whose information that was? Finally how are the police going to handle this situation? This topic is important to world history because this could increase identity theft; causing a huge problem.

    1. Wow, that's a strange place to write personal information. Do you think the person whose information was on the paper knew that was on there? Did they write it themselves? You're right about how significant this kind of issue is, and what it can lead to.

      Delete
    2. I am very surprised to hear the people's personal information was just thrown around in the parade as confetti. I have no idea who could have done this, whether they meant to or not. Personally, I think that someone just grabbed some paper and shredded it for confetti, not realizing the important information. Still, I can't imagine how you wouldn't notice. I'm intrested to see how police handle this.

      Delete
    3. While I believe that there is nobody to blame in this situation, I think some action should be taking. People should be personally responsible for their own information. There is obviously issues with having personal information released, but if you are not responsible enough to keep track of it then you aren't responsible enough to even have this information.

      Delete
    4. That's pretty dangerous. It's surprising to me that at such a popular and major attraction really important documents to people are being carelessly thrown into the air. I don't even know how the police could handle this, since it's obviously difficult to collect the information that has already been thrown into thousands of people in a crazy busy city like Manhattan.

      Delete
    5. Personally I think that this was a case of extreme negligence. Important documents had to be removed, so they were shredded (not small enough) and them recycled. Although I don't think there i any one person to blame in this situation, I feel it could have easily been prevented though by a many number of people. I hope that in the future the people who originally had these documents will find a better way to dispose of important documents.

      Delete
    6. I was very surprised when I read this, because the confetti displayed very confidential information to a large number of people. It also frightens me that this kind of thing happens, and I'm sure that the people involved are nervous about the consequences of their personal information being distributed throughout the city during the parade. In addition, since it is still not clear where the confetti came from, there are still a lot of unanswered questions.

      Delete
    7. To me it just seems like someone wasn't doing their job. Obviously the police reports shouldn't have been in the confetti. Many people must have had their information spread throughout the crowd. Without knowing where the confetti came from, it would be hard to decide who did it, but something needs to be done.

      Delete
    8. I am shocked that people would be so careless as to use personal information for confetti. In such a public place like a parade on Thanksgiving, it can be especially dangerous because you never know who will find it or read it, so it is very unsafe. Something needs to be changed about the way they get their confetti in the future and they need to find who was so careless as to use personal information like that.

i think this is a good thing that the new Mexican president wants to work with America more and on other issues instead of just the drug war because it is hope that all countries would be closer allies lessening the chances of war.

This article talks about the fact that Apple fired the head of their maps program. many people have been angry with the new apple maps that came with IOS 6, and have been doing whatever they can to avoid using them. this clearly is bad for Apple's appearance, and are hopefully going to revert to the more reliable Google maps which they previously had. This affects the world, because almost everyone who owns an apple product has been using flawed maps for the past couple months, and hopefully this problem will be fixed.

Although it is horrible to say this, i think it is great that he got fired. we will hopefully be able to get accurate maps sometime soon, but until then, we will have no idea where we are going.

    3. I agree that Apple had substantial reason to fire the chief of Apple maps program. There were numerous complaints about this application as soon as iPhone 5 was released. Consequently, the Apple CEO, Tim Crooks, had to make a public apology for the problem people were having with the maps, since they had moved away from using Google maps. As a consequence, their rival, Galaxy S3 by Samsung did better in sales than iPhone 5. For this reason, I believe Apple was justified in firing him.

    4. Apple isn't part of my life so it doesn't affect me so I think that if the majority of people don't like it then give him another chance, then fire him.

Long Islanders get usual power bills despite Sandy blackout

    CNN 11/27/12
    http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/26/us/new-york-utility-bills/index.html?hpt=us_c1

In this article the author talks about how victims of hurricane Sandy, despite their incredible loses, have still been receiving electrical bills. What the electrical companies have done is looked back at the customers electrical bills from the previous year during the same month and charged them accordingly. A lot of customers are very confused and upset about the situation at hand. The main problem is they don't understand why they would be billed when hurricane Sandy had left them in their homes without any power and yet they are still getting billed for being left in the dark. They also have consequences if they fail to pay their bills.
After hearing about this I was very confused as to why the electrical companies would even think to charge these customers at all. First hurricane Sandy took so much away from them and already causing troubles with money. Then, some customers were left in the dark for 14 days and were expected to take out their wallets and pay the electrical companies for power they weren't even receiving. Also, if they fail to do so they will have to be sent to the commencement of enforcement. I hope that they try and solve this problem so that it doesn't put the customers in even more money troubles.

    Title: Ebola may go airborne
    Author: Tina Hesman Saey

    Date: Nov. 15, 2012
    URL: http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/346435/title/Ebola_may_go_airborne

Gary Kobinger is an infectious disease researcher at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. Specifically, he studies the Ebola virus. Ebola is a deadly virus that causes hemorrhagic fever in people and primates after they contract it due to direct contact with an infected organism's body fluids. He became interested when there was an outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Pigs had gotten sick and dies, but at the time, it was unknown that pigs could contract Ebola. Later, it was discovered that pig farmers in the Philippines had antibodies against the virus in their blood, suggesting that they had previously come into contact with it. Also, of the more than 2,200 cases of Ebola documented since 1976, only 13 of them cannot be traced back to direct contact. So Kobinger and some of his colleagues conducted an experiment to test if the virus could spread through the air. The results of the experiment showed that it is possible for Ebola to pass through the air, but there could have been mistakes in the experiment. Water droplets could have passed on to uninfected organisms, and then making them sick that way, not through the respiratory system. No evidence is available that suggests that Ebola would even spread through the air in natural settings. This discovery about Ebola could be very essential. If future outbreaks of Ebola occur, we know that it could be due to air transmission, not just direct contact. Plus, we have foundation evidence that Ebola may pass through the air, so might want to expect the virus to be able to mutate in the near future to be able to efficiently pass through the air.

I found this article to be quite startling. I already knew that Ebola was an extremely deadly virus, so to see a headline that reads, "Ebola ma go airborne" is somewhat frightening and shocking (and slightly traumatic). It is good that a study was done to see if Ebola really can be transmitted through the air and that evidence supporting it was collected. But as in any experiment, there could have been mistakes. And due to the way that this experiment was set up, it is very likely. I learned about Ebola in biology, and that is why I was interested in this article. Thankfully I do not know anyone who was affected by such a virus. One question I do have for others is what do you think it would mean for the world if Ebola, a virus with about a 98% fatality rate, was able to efficiently be transmitted through the air (as well as by direct contact)?

Mexican Beauty Queen Killed in Shootout

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/26/world/americas/mexico-beauty-queen-death/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

Recently in Mexico, a thirty-year-old beauty queen was killed in a shooting. Her name was Maria Susana Flores Gamez. Prior to this horrible incident, she had won several beauty pageants, and her death was not only a tragedy to her friends a family, but also came as a shock to the citizens of Mexico. According to the beauty pageant organizers, Maria was very kind, loving, and just an overall great person. Unfortunately, two other people were killed in the shooting. Currently, the suspected criminals have been located in the city of Mocorito.

When I read this article, I was very shocked about what happened to this innocent Mexican model. It’s horrible that Maria Gamez along with two others was shot and killed from a gun battle between military troops. I feel bad for her friends and family. I’m sure she was a role model to many Mexican citizens. However, I was surprised she wasn’t protected from the shooters. Since she was a famous model, wouldn’t she have body guards or at least other people to defend her? Whether Maria’s death was accidental or intentional, I hope the shooters will get sent to jail immediately.

I also agree with you that the shooters should be sent to jail for committing this crime.

    3. I think that this is awful. It's very sad to hear about somebody dying, especially someone that was such a role model to so many people. But it makes sense to me that she didn't have any bodyguards because even here in America, it's not like we have our pageant winners (like Ms. North Carolina or whatever) walk around with bodyguards.

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/25/world/asia/china-ivy-league-admission/index.html?hpt=wo_bn4

This article talks about how many students from mainland China decide to finish their education here in America. Over 700,000 Chinese students apply for international enrollment, with the US being an extremely popular destination for education. This is because many families feel like the "gaokao" oriented education in China is extremely linear, where there is only one path. However, in Western education, students are granted more freedom of choice as to what they wish to do. Even though many people apply for universities and boarding schools, there is only so many people that they can take. One way to combat this problem would be to set up international schools to China.
I found this article interesting, as it really helped contrast two different education systems, each with their own benefits and cons. To me, it appears as students outside of America seem to put greater emphasis on their own education and learning. While many of us stress little about the importance of school, others from different countries are competing to get into our universities. In a way, I felt a small personal connection to this article; my father arrived in the US for better education, where he studied here for graduate school.

I also think that America is not only a popular place for education, but is just growing as a popular country in general. 1) This article discusses that by 2022, there will be some major differences in transportation. This includes the following areas: Airplanes, trains and even cars. It says that there might be cars that don't even need a driver! Wouldn't that be crazy if you could "drive" a car without a license. Anyone, no matter what age, would be able to ride in a car by themselves because they wouldn't have to be able to drive. The airplanes are increasing in efficiency and will be energy efficient in many different levels by 2022

    2) I honestly can't wait till 2022 now. This sounds so amazing and great, it's too bad that we don't have these new improvements right now. It stinks for people that are gonna die before this date because they will not get to experience these improvements. I think that it will take a couple more years after 2022 before everyone starts to be able to use these things because when they are first released to the public they will probably be unreasonably expensive. After a couple more years the prices will start to drop to an average persons price range.

In Iraq 29 people were killed and 126 were wounded (and possibly more) in car bombings. There were three strings of car bombings, all which happened Tuesday. The first three attacks occurred in the northern part of Kirkuk (a controversial district in Iraq) killing 4 and wounding 41; the next two bombings were in the province Anbar (near Baghdad) killing 6 and wounding 13; the last three cars exploded outside Shiite mosques in Baghdad killing 19 and wounding 72. No one claimed responsibility for the attacks, but the terrorist group al-Qaeda is highly suspected. These attacks may have happened due to dispute over the oil rich and diverse region Kirkuk, and also conflict between Iraq’s federal and regional governments. The state of Iraq is very tense. This is important to World History because these attacks could lead to further violence and war.
I think that this article details a very sad and terrible situation. These are not the first terrorist attacks in Iraq and will not be the last. There have been bad al-Qaeda attacks in Iraq previously, and it appears the attacks are beginning again. I feel very bad for Iraq citizens, who have to suffer through this violence and danger. I have no personal experiences, but if I were in Iraq I would be very scared. I would be afraid of this happening to me or my family. 1) The last eight years, Palestine has been devastated because of the loss of their former leader, Yasir Arafat. Many people from there believe that his death was no accident. They actually think he was poisoned. This conspiracy is that Israel was responsible for the murder. So, it was decided that his body would be exhumed, meaning that they will re-dig him up, and examine his body to see if he really was poisoned. They are actually doing that today. Results from some of his clothing items do show that they had high levels of a radioactive poison. But we won’t know for sure about his death until the results are back in a couple of weeks.
    2) I wouldn’t be surprised if he was actually poisoned. I mean, stuff like that happens all of the time around the world. But I am worried about the results. If they show that he was indeed poisoned then Palestine will say that Israel was responsible, and that could start a war. Some questions I would have are: what do you think about all of this? Do you think the results will show he was poisoned? If so, do you think this could start because of this?

Although prosthetic legs have been advancing quickly prosthetic arms haven’t. Its much more complex in the upper body, they have to deal with the loss of touch, how to differentiate touching skin and sand paper. Also even the littlest things like turning a page require some exercise in the brain.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/27/us/educator-aided-others-at-cheating-us-charges.html

This article talks about a man who helped (by cheating) teachers or soon-to-be teachers who needed to pass standardized tests that would certify them as teachers. What he would do is pay others to take the test for the soon-to-be-teacher. To do this, he would pay someone to go take the certification test under a man's name, and then go back and take it under a woman's name. This pertains to world history because cheating is a big deal that can get you into a lot of trouble anywhere. But in terms of this article, students cheating in school are punished with detention. However with teachers, it's worse. Clarence Mumford Sr. was sent to court.
I think that it's really silly that this man is paying people to take other people's test. According to the article, the test isn't even that difficult. People shouldn't be lazy and get others to do their own tests. A lot of kids cheat in class because it makes life easier for them at the time, however it can get you into a lot of trouble which it really isn't worth. What concerns me is that other people around the world are doing things like Mumford Sr: enforcing cheating that can affect the education of kids. If the teacher needs help to pass the test, then obviously they aren't educated enough teachers and shouldn't be teaching at all. This puts students' education and learning at stake, which isn't fair. Will the government begin to directly address/ publicly announce the situation to scare others out of committing these crimes?

In my opinion if you cant pass a test to see if you are capable to be a teacher then you should not be aloud to be one. They have these tests to see if you are capable to teach students which is a very hard thing to do. So when you have people that need to pay others to take the test for them, it just shows that they are not fit to be one.

This article talks about the future of american transportation. In air travel, there will be differently shaped planes, and things like snacks, window seats, legroom, and maybe even bathroom use will be charged. Airlines will cut the cost of the ticket but will add extra fees. There is a european airline that makes you pay to use the bathroom and there will be standing only places on some flights for less. Experts are a little worried because there could be a "upper" and "lower" class of passengers. There could be some cars in the next ten years that automatically drive themselves and volvo is creating a "road train", a chain of cars connected by a wireless connection and lead by a car driven by a human. Also, in America, the use of trains has been going up. There have been improvements in inner city metros and in longer trains like Amtrack.
I think that this is really cool. I think that the new fuel efficient plane designs are really interesting, although I am not a fan of the new pricing scheme of the airlines. I also think that the driverless cars are an interesting idea, although I think that they could be a little dangerous. If there is some malfunction on the car, and it changes lanes the people in it are not in a good situation, especially if nobody is paying attention. I also think that the improvement of trains is good, because they are more fuel efficient than cars.

"In Nature, Fatal Attractions Can Be Part of Life", by Ingfei Chen
    The New York Times, 11/26/2012
    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/27/science/in-nature-fatal-attractions-can-be-part-of-life.html?ref=science

This article covers how (very) strange attractions between different animal species in nature actually is just a part of life. For example, it intros with a short narrative about a sea lion trying to mate with a penguin (gross). The penguin keeps trying to escape, so the sea lion just ends up eating it. Warm and fluffy, right? But actually, scientists say that "nature is not perfect" and this might be attributed to testosterone boosts that males get during the mating season - and lack of females to compensate. So the (frustrated, cough, cough) males turn their attentions on other species.

I thought this was very interesting, but still kind of yuck. I mean, a sea lion and a penguin? Really? That would create a... penlion? Haha. But really, I guess I can see that in the human world, too. Like, if a guy is really, really desperate... never mind. I did, however, think the article was very interesting, and it provided a very different view on nature and what goes on there. It was cool to read (but slightly disturbing to think about), and I enjoyed it.

Race to find Gulf Coast dolphin killer
    http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/28/us/gulf-coast-dolphin-killings/index.html?hpt=us_t2

    1) This article brings up the pressing issue of dolphin slaughtering that is happening on the gulf coast. At least 7 carcasses have been turned up on various spots on the beaches. All 7 carcases have signs of mutilation including stab wounds, gunshot wounds, parts cut off of their bodies, and in one case, a screwdriver sticking out of a dolphin’s head. Experts say that the likely reasons for this killing are that a thrill seeker or a fisherman whose catches have been taken by the dolphins. Either way, these culprit or culprits need to be caught before the next breeding season starts, and more dolphins are at risk.

    2) My opinion is that this issue needs to be resolved with the utmost urgency. This senseless slaughter is not only illegal, it is wrong on so many levels. If the killings are for ‘sport’ then they are senseless and without reason, as i believe it is to kill any animal unnecessarily. This is not the first time that people, especially fishermen have been found guilty of shooting dolphins. As the article also states that the kind of person that does this and has no reason for doing so, is dangerous because what happens when they decide to take it to the next level? That is when people get hurt.

    1. I think that it's just disgraceful that someone would do such a thing. There is pretty much no reason to do it, other than just being cruel to animals. Also to mutilate the bodies after the fact is even worse.

4 female war veterans sue U.S. military over policy against women in combat

    http://cwatersatchhs.blogspot.com/2012/11/current-event-12-individual-topic-of.html#comment-form

This article is about how women are suing the military because of there policy against women fighting in combat. There is a rule that has been around in the military for years. If you are a woman you can not fight in a battle on the ground. Thats just the way that it is has always been. Now there is a major Mary Jennings Hegar who has been a pilot for years. She was flying over Iraq to pick up three wounded soldiers when her plane was shot down. She got shrapnel in her leg and then got out of the plane, and started fighting. Even though she received a purple heart she still is not allowed to fight on the ground, and cannot be trained.

In my own opinion I dont really think this is fair. Obviously Major. Hegar is a great soldier and she deserves to be able to fight in the front lines if she wants too. In my mind if a woman can pass all the tests that are necessary for men to fight on the ground then they should be able to fight. I have no problem with that at all. I dont think that the Military necessarily is against women but its still a process. Women used to not be able to fight at all. Now they are allowed in the military they just cant fight on the ground. So in years to come I do believe that this rule will be changed.

Egypt: Fresh clashes in Cairo over Morsy decree
    http://edition.cnn.com/2012/11/28/world/meast/egypt-protests/?hpt=hp_t2
Fresh violence has broken out in Cairo, Egypt, in protest against the decree issued by the President Mohamad Morsy to extend his powers, thus making his decisions above law. This is not what the people of Egypt expected after ousting ex-president Hosni Mubarak after similar uprisings of the Arab spring. Mr. Morsy belongs to an Islamic group called, “The Muslim Brotherhood,” and the general fear is that Egypt may take a turn towards Islamic laws, which would be a step in the wrong direction for this country. Mr. Morsy and his Muslim Brotherhood supporters defend the policy saying that it is needed to support the revolution that removed Mubarak from power. President Morsy has blamed the protest on “counterrevolutionary forces” loyal to Mr. Mubarak’s party. He has put himself in a precarious position because it has made it very difficult for him to compromise, especially after he fired the top prosecutor.
In my opinion, this is a very dangerous situation, which may ultimately lead to dictatorship. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that President Morsy is trying to broker a peace accord between the warring Israelis and the Hamas leaders from Palestine. He has sweeping executive as well as legislative powers and has now put himself above law. There are no checks and balances and this government does not seem to be any different from the previous regime. The democracy that the people of Egypt had fought for seems to getting out of their reach again. With these protests the stability of the country seems to be in jeopardy again. I hope that the democracy prevails in Egypt and the people are successful in making President Morsy back off from this dreadful decision that he has made.

Along the U.S. Gulf Coast, there have been at least seven dolphin killings since January. Killing a dolphin is against the law. A person charged with killing a dolphin may have to pay a fine of $100,000 and go to jail for a year. Some of the dolphins that have been killed were shot, and others were mutilated. Possible reasons for the killing of dolphins include fishing charter captains shooting dolphins when hooked or simply getting a thrill. Authorities want to find the culprit very soon- before the dolphins begin their breeding season. They do not want newborn dolphins to be killed by this person. Federal authorities are asking the public to help raise awareness of this situation, so an end can be put to it.

I believe it is truly horrible that someone would want to kill a helpless dolphin for the fun of it. Mutilating a dolphin is sick and completely wrong. I hope that we can find whoever is killing the dolphins to put an end to it. It is not right to torture animals. Even if this person had a decent reason for killing these dolphins, they have no right to grossly mutilate them.

Crawling Bio-Robot Runs on Rat Heart Cells/Ker Than

Scientists have been experimenting with ways to incorporate machine with cells to make the ultimate tool. By extracting heart cells from a rat and then injecting them into a miniscule robot body, they have created the biobot. Heart cells contract rhythmically and in unison with one another. This provides some organization to the experiments being carried out. So far the biobot is restricted to a nutrient-rich fluid, there is no limit to what the future holds for this astonishing innovation.

The article mentions what they are, but why make them in the first place? These biological machines can be used to carry out tasks that machines in the past simply couldn’t do. Once they are able to survive in our bloodstream their potential is unthinkable. Scientists say that they might be able to locate and disembody tumor cells. I think that this is a big step in biology and I encourage them to continue their work in the subject.

Syrian rebels down jet, take video of bloodied pilot- November 28 2012

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/28/world/meast/syria-civil-war/index.html?hpt=wo_c1

The article I read was about the Chaos going on in Syria. Rebels have been repeatedly planting bombs and shooting down planes of president al-Assad’s government. On Tuesday 135 people were reported dead from car bombs and shot down planes. The rebels have been trying to topple al-Assad for nearly 2 years now. About 40,000 civilians have been killed as of the start of the protests in Syria 20 months ago. The article also talks about the tension between Turkey and Syria and the possible conflict in the past between the two countries.
What is going on with the world?! It is plain terrible that all this is happening. While Americans live peacefully at home thousands of people are in a constant state of danger that the next bomb will take their lives. I have read so many articles about the horrible events that are going on, but no articles about what is being done to stop them. I don’t even know what the government is doing wrong but violence is no way to settle the conflict. If Syria is planning on improving its well doing then they need to sit down and settle this nonsense because all their doing is intensifying the problem by killing countless people. This article is significant to what we are learning in class. We are studying the historical conflicts and invasions of ancient empires, religions, and kingdoms. The revolts in Syria and the Middle East in general are great examples of present day conflict and problems that need to be settled to move forward.

    Latin America’s Challenge

    http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2012/11/27/latin-americas-challenge/?hpt=hp_bn2

The article “Latin America’s Challenge” was about how Latin America’s middle class population has expanded by 50 percent. This caused the gap between the poor and the rich to decrease by 14 percent. People are wondering if Latin America will head the same direction as China did in the 1980’s. China lifted many people out of poverty causing increased consumption and growing global clout. They are questioning whether the rise will be sustainable or not. The new entrants to the middle class may slip back into poverty because Latin America won’t be able to sustain the rise in population.

I think it is good that Latin America’s middle class population has increased because that means there are less poor people. I hope that Latin America can sustain this marked increase because it is a good thing that less people are in poverty. This doesn't directly relate to what we are learning necessarily; but, we have learned about social classes of different historic groups. In most of the social classes we have studied, the middle class was often merchants, artisans, and scribes. I am also questioning whether or not Latin America will sustain this substantial increase. I hope they do because that would be very good for their country and its people.

It then goes onto to give some of unlikely scenarios that are more likely then you winning the jackpot tonight. These included…
    • Dying from a bee sting: 1 in 6.1 million.
    • A golfer hitting a hole in one on consecutive par-3 holes: 1 in about 156 million.
    • Hitting a deer with a vehicle in Hawaii, the state where State Farm says deer-vehicle collisions are least likely: 1 in 6,267.
    • Being attacked by a shark: 1 in 11.5 million

The article I read talks about the reactions residents had when they returned to their homes on the jersey shore on Sunday morning. The people were very devastated (as anyone would be) to find their homes turned to crumbles, their neighborhoods demolished, and the communities taken by the hurricane. In the area that the storm hit, there is still no electricity, water or gas. But, people are trying to do what they can! They are rebuilding homes, and trying to stay calm along with other homeowners and neighbors. I feel really bad for the people whose houses go destroyed, they lost everything they once knew and loved. I also feel extremely lucky that I have never been in that type of situation and neither has anyone in my family. I know that these communities are going through a hard time right now, and I’m glad that they are trying to make the best of it and calm themselves. Never being put in this situation, I don’t know exactly how these people are feeling, but I can imagine finding half your house tossed willy nilly in the middle of the street a block down the road can be pretty spirit crushing. I’m just glad that these people can still make the best of it.

Thanksgivivng is a time for reunion and joy, sadly Thanksgiving is usually overshadowed by the following day. Black Friday, as this day is known, is a day when most American shops put their merchandise on sale for extremely low prices. This of course causes many peoples bad natures to shine through as they fight over these products. In order to combat these days of gluttony a social movement known as #givingtuesday has introduced an intriguing new idea. They have designated the tuesday after thanksgiving as "Giving Tuesday". This is a call for organizations and individuals around the world to give in to their philanthropic tendencies and give aid to whatever cause they deem worthy. Already several companies, including Macys, have created match-donation drives under the name of #givingtuesday.

I personally think that this is a fantastic idea. I myself have never been ok with the idea of Black Friday or Cyber Monday. After being so self-involved I believe it is necessary to make sure that people let their philanthropic spirit show. If everyone who participated in Black Friday donated just five or ten dollars then I am sure we could further the causes of countless charities. It was a stroke of genius to make this campaign a social media one. The message has already been passed to 2500 organizations and they themselves are spreading the word. I am glad that this idea has finally taken root and has been implemented.

Mohammed Morsi is one of the most important men in the Middle East right now. Mohammed had successfully brokered a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, and had displayed excellent political skills. However, he then grabbed for more. On November 22nd he issued an emergency decree in which he gave himself more powers, including immunity for his decisions from judicial challenge. This means that his decisions can not be challenged by anyone and that he could decide on something no one agrees with. The President insists that it is temporary and that he did it to stop politically motivated judges form undermining the process of making a new constitution. To some people this sounds too much like a dictatorship. Whether Morsi ends up being an autocrat or reformer will play a big role in the fate of democracy in the Middle East.

Egypt just finally got out of a dictatorship after a lot of hard work by many Egyptians, and, in my opinion, it would be terrible if all their work was for nothing. Morsi seemed to be a great leader and things seemed to have finally turned around for Egypt. However, he then suddenly grabbed for more power. I hope that Morsi is speaking the truth when he says it is only temporarily. Nevertheless, I fear that he might be lying and then Egypt would be in the same place where it was before.

    1) This article is about a few teenagers around the age of 12-14 year olds who got caught attempting to go to a suicide bombing meeting, in Northwest Pakistan. North Waziristan, where the boys were currently living, is widely believed to be the headquarters of the Haqquani network, allegedly one of the most dangerous headquarters to the NATo troops in Afghanistan. This is important to our study of World History because the people involved in the event were our age.
    2) I have mixed emotions about this article. For one, I feel sorry for the boys since they were planning on committing suicide. But there is a flipside, since they were planning to sacrifice their lives, but they were also willing to take others lives, which is kind of a despicable thing to do. I guess I am just glad that the boys got caught and they are paying the price of their actions. People are just lucky that they got caught sooner than later! A question that I had when I was reading was what motivates people to not only kill themselves, but also to kill others? What did they do to them? And this article does not really relate to anything we have been learning in class .

Tuesday, Mitt Romney had lunch with our current president Barrack Obama. The lunch took place in the White House. The main topic of their discussion was on America's leadership in the world and how to keep that leadership. Insiders of the lunch said that it was a very peaceful and productive lunch. They ate white turkey chili and southwestern grilled chicken. Although tensions were high between them during the presidential race, they promised to stay in touch. This is important to history because if the president and other party’s running mate can work together, it will impact how well our country does as a whole.
I think it is a great idea that the two presidents are working together. The most powerful person in our country and debatably the second most powerful person working together can only lead to great things. This shows that they are willing to work together for the greater needs of America. Again, I have nothing bad to say about the article and what they have done. My question about the article is why can they work so well together now but not before? It’s like all of a sudden they are good friends.

They also believe that this species is part human and has requested rights for them to protect them against shows that hunt for them. Such as the ones on the discovery channel.

In my opinion this is awesome. Who wouldn't want to know if Bigfoot is real or not. You always hear about people making Bigfoot sightings and we blow them off. But now they might actually be true!!! It would be really cool if they actually were real. If they were real though I feel that a lot more people would try to hunt them and scientists might want to do experiments on them. So maybe it is best if they stay hidden. But you never I guess anything is possible

The article talks about the powerball jackpot and the chances of winning it, which is basically impossible. With the $550 million jackpot, the chances of winning it is 1 in 175,223,510. The chances of winning the powerball jackpot is slightly higher then the mega million jackpot, which the chances at 1 in 175,711,536. The article also has other interesting facts including the chances of other thinks happening in the world. The article is basically saying: YOU WON'T WIN THE JACKPOT.
I think this article is very interesting because of all the facts it provides. I was thinking though why they would say you don't even have a slight chance of winning because people will stop buying them and the company that runs the lottery will get mad at CNN for making them lose money. The chances of winning the jackpot really surprised me because I didn't know the number was that small, even though I knew it was still going to be a really small number. My big question is, will someone win this jackpot?

To me i believe it's pointless to play when i could use my money for other reasons. I'm not trying to hate, but i believe it's a waste of time since my family can not win either.

In Sandy's wake, help comes in unexpected ways

    CNN iReport Team

    CNN November 29, 2012

This article was about the effects of the Hurricane Sandy. Many people are still without power and heat. Many still do not have their lives back together. This article has some stories of people who are trying to help in the ways they can. Some make inspirational videos, while others rap and collect money to donate to the Red Cross and other organizations to help those who were affected. Many people were affected by this natural disaster and life in the areas that were affected area slowly returning to normal. This is an important event that has greatly affected the U.S. and many people, so it is important to World History because it is a horrible disaster.

I think the ways that people are trying to help are very nice and thoughtful. When things are really bad, sometimes even the littlest thing can make things better. These people are trying to inspire others to help and that is very noble and considerate of them. If I were in an area of disaster, I would definitely help those who needed it. Hurricanes are natural disasters kind of like the monsoons in India, but hurricanes are not very predictable at all. I wonder when life in the affected area will be more normal and practically the same as before the disaster. How many people were affected? How can we help?

    1) Police official Mir Ahmed had arrested 3 young boys in Pakistan. The 3 boys that were arrested with their suspected handler. The 3 boys were around 12-14 years old. They were on their way to North Waziristan, where the bombing training was going to be. The boys were saying that they were taken from Karachi to a city in North Waziristan for bomb training. The suspect handler was Yahya Mehsud they say he is part of a gang that train young people to suicide bombing. North Waziristan was an ungoverned place in Pakistan where is believed to be a headquarters in Haqqani. Where they feul the most lethal weapons.
    2) I think that these boys were going to do something bad later on, it was good to arrest them. I also think that this bomb training organization should be stopped. Because first were having young people doing something that can cause them to suicide, kill others. Also when this keeps going this can cause a big problem. This because if someone who trained to bomb and then hes going to blow up a building then its hard to tell who is it when there are many people in one place.

Honey Boo Boo sick with croup
    By Jessica Carlson
    The Examiner, Nov. 27
    http://www.examiner.com/article/honey-boo-boo-sick-with-croup

This article is about child pageant star Honey Boo Boo, who is now sick with the croup. Croup is a barking cough that is common in infants and young children. Honey Boo Boo’s television show, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, was in the middle of filming their Christmas special when Honey Boo Boo fell ill. Unfortunately, Honey Boo Boo’s cough is bad enough that they have postponed the filming of the Christmas special until December 4th. Honey Boo Boo’s older sister alerted the public of this unfortunate happenstance through Facebook, a social network.
I think that this is tragic for a number of reasons. Firstly, what if Honey Boo Boo is so sick that filming of the Christmas special could never take place? That would derive thousands of Americans of their most sophisticated entertainment source. Secondly, I worry for Honey Boo Boo’s health. Unlike the children of the Middle Ages, which we are currently studying in class, we now have antibiotic medicine with which we can combat otherwise potentially fatal illnesses such as the croup. However, any disease is dangerous, and if untreated, croup can be especially dangerous if airways become so constricted that it becomes difficult for the diseased person to breathe. And wouldn’t it be a shame if something were to happen to Honey Boo Boo!

Title: Antartica Ice Melt speeds up
    Author: Matt Smith

In this article, they discuss how Antarticas ice is beginning to pick up speed in melting away. We all knew that gloabl warming has been increaed recently due to the many problems including factories and greenhouse gases. However this article states that it will still take about 3000-7000 years for the entire mass to melt but with that process many low lying islands and areas could very well go under. By those 3000 years almost 4.5 miles of the mass (depth) cou7d be gone. Sea levels as a whole could rise about 25 feet. THe article doesn't state what the sea could rise to in areas such as Southern California or Japan.
I think that this article is rather alarming and gives you kind of a vesion of what needs to happen over these next few years to prevent something like this. There is always talk about saving the enviorment but little action. People really need to start not only thinking about how to help but getting out there and helping the enviorment.

Many people will lose their jobs that worked for Hostess, which many people are upset about. Most employees went on strike, and did not return by the deadline Hostess gave them, so they were all fired. Hostess decided that they didn’t have enough employees, and they needed to shut down. This is Hostess’s second time going bankrupt since 2004.
    2) This article didn’t surprise me, because this happened in 2004 as well. I know a lot of people who eat Hostess food will be upset about this. I don’t ever eat Hostess food, so I don’t really care about it shutting down. We talked about this in class and many people were upset and didn’t want Hostess to shut down. Because this has happened before, I think it will probably reopen again soon, when Hostess makes more money and can afford to hire more employees.

In this article the effects of recent Hurricane Sandy are discussed. These devastating hurricanes caused a massive destruction to the very crowded New York City and New Jersey areas. This article talks about some stories of victims of this storm. It also mentions people who are helping the victims in anyway they can. The inspirational methods such as rapping and donating money and food to the Red Cross have helped many people who are still without shelter. This was an important event in our history because of the rareness of hurricanes going so far north. Since the cities have not always been prepared for rare event such as this the impact was devastating.

I feel that the ways people are helping are very creative and have a better effect than the traditional donation plans. People are making things fun for people who are in such a horrible place and are also helping them at the same time. All these people try to help those in need and make them feel better. If I lived near the area I would definitely try to organize a relief group to help those in need. They are just now starting to get back on their feet and have come such a far way from the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. I wonder when things in New York will ever be the same as before? How can we benefit those who need help and reconstruct the communities shattered by this devastating storm?

    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-205_162-57549240/google-says-government-surveillance-is-on-the-rise/

    2) Google recently released its summer transparency report, which shows that governments are requesting information and takedown more than ever, especially this past summer. Conflicts in all over the world, Europe, the Middle East, and other nations, caused this. Governments in Syria, Egypt, China, the USA, and some other media-wary nations have made almost 21 thousand inquiries for data. The US has requested information about 75 hundred times, from about 16 thousand users, and Google supplies this data nine out of ten times. This disclosed information shows that our governments interact with and take the Internet very seriously. As a few Google employees comment, the information you release into cyberspace can be and probably is monitored by the government.

    3) I was amazed to see that so many governments, including our own, monitor and request and/or order the removal of certain websites and videos online. Google is probably one of the most-used search engines of the modern day, and many people over the world use it to express their opinions on political, economic, and social issues and events. I can see that some governments would not want news of their nation’s exploits to be free-floating in cyberspace, but I don’t like that Google, the only search engine I use, is so compliant to delete or reveal those things. I suppose it is safer for Google to comply, so that it can remain in those nations and provide access to the internet for people that want to speak out. Should Google, with it’s “free information” views, continue to give out user information and delete items from the Internet?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because Google is a dominant search engine, and noncompliance will result in the increasing distrust among groups, I agree that it would be more stable for Google to comply with the country's personal requests of data. If not, economical relations will become risky for the search engine. But no matter which side Google accepts, there is bound to be a group-either the government or the country's people-who will become upset.

    http://www.newsobserver.com/2012/11/26/2508219/ohios-cleaning-fairy-gets-1-year.html

53-year-old Susan Warren of Elyria was driving in Cleveland, Ohio, when she decided she was bored. Most people, when bored, do things such as watch TV, go on the Internet, run around outside, and other normal activities. Because she was bored, Warren broke into a house and cleaned. She washed some coffee cups, vacuumed, took out the trash, and dusted. She then left a $75 bill on a napkin and left her phone number. She pled guilty of attempted burglary, and is now on probation for one year. She must also perform 20 hours of community service. Warren owns a cleaning business, and occasionally enters homes, cleans, and leaves the bill. But this does not justify her breaking into some random person’s house and doing the same. Warren’s excuse of good intentions behind her act of gaining money reminds me a bit of the Crusades. While the warriors claimed that they were doing it for their religion, in reality there were all sorts of personal gain they were trying to get.

I cannot say that I’ve had people break into my house and clean it. We’ve willingly had a cleaner come to our house while we’re not there, and clean it for us. I still find Warren insane for wanting to clean someone’s house because she was “bored.” But in reality, she just wanted some more money, and didn’t want to directly steal money from someone. She probably did the cleaning to convince herself that it wasn’t considered stealing if they got her service in return, even if it was against their will. The cleanliness is actually kind of the opposite of the Middle Ages, considering no one really bathed, they threw their sewage into the streets, and brought their animals to live indoors with them.

This article is about the violence that has occurred in Iraq over the past few days. Since Tuesday, there have been many bomb attacks, suicide bombs, car bombs, etc. that have been killing around 80 people in the last three days and seriously injuring over 200 civilians. The attacks seem to be spread all over the country, sometimes targeting popular restaurants and establishments. There is no doubt that the political controversy between the Prime Minister and government officials is affecting the chaos in Iraq right now. This is important in history because it is put down in the records of what is happening politically and the results of controversy, etc. as well as how heavy these topics can be that can lead to spontaneous acts of violence all throughout the country.

This is really crazy when I think about it. When I compare how I live to what is going on in Iraq, it’s pretty unbelievable to think that two different environments can host either major disaster and violence or an overall peaceful town. How many people that get injured and killed in these acts of violence are drastic for something that doesn’t seem like it was purposefully planned to do anything. It’s also difficult to believe that the government is too busy with a corruption scandal that they aren’t taking measures to protect the citizens of their country, as far as I can see from reading this article. It makes you wonder why the government isn’t helping their citizens. How they could attempt to manage their political problems for the sake of their country, etc.

There could be some cars in the next ten years that automatically drive themselves and volvo is creating a "road train", a chain of cars connected by a wireless connection and lead by a car driven by a human. Also, in America, the use of trains has been going up.
At this rate I think it's cool how they are improving there ways towards the upcoming years. They making nice stuff that people would like to use and creating more efficent stuff for people to use as well. I can not wait to see how these evolve soon around us because i can not wait to use them.

Some of the changes for the planes sound good, and some do not. More legroom would be great! For me, that is always the least comfortable part of being on an airplane. It bothers me more than the roaring of the engine the inability to lean back without bothering the person behind you. On the other hand, paying to go to the bathroom seems kind of ridiculous. It seems like the sort of thing that (if they were going to charge for it) would be included in the ticket price.

I remember reading about Google's self-driving car a while back. I wonder when technology like that will be available to the public. Even when it does, will people be willing to put their safety in the hands of what is essentially a robot-car?

My current event is on Erik Highsmith, a wide receiver for UNC football. But this has nothing to do with football. It has to do with the fact that he plagiarized off of an 11 year olds essay on poultry. An insider has found out that an essay by a college student had been plagiarizing. The odd thing about this isn’t that he plagiarized but that he plagiarized a seven year olds work thinking it could pass for college material essay. This shows how much recruiters for sports actually look into their athletes grades. It also shows how smart Highsmith actually is.
My opinion is that Highsmith is no that smart and that when it comes to colleges they don’t look into grades but how well the person plays the sport. Knowing me as an athlete you have to keep your grades up and play your sport well but if you cannot manage that then you cannot manage college at all. If I had to ask him, I would ask why he thought it was okay to plagiarize. Also I would ask why he thought a piece of 11 year olds work would compare to one of a college student. Knowing that he is a division 1 sports player, people are monitoring their work and grades so they do not slip up. But when you allow yourself to do something that odd and not smart is horrible.

    http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/in-historic-vote-palestine-becomes-non-member-un-state-with-observer-status-1.481531

Palestine has just become a nonmember observing state of the U.N., after a vote with 138 in favor, 9 against, and 41 countries abstaining. Secretary of State Hillary CLinton called the vote "counterproductive", because it avoids direct negotiations between Palestine and Israel. Meanwhile, Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas felt that it was great for Palestine because it showed that the U.N. acknowledged Palestine's existence and right to exist. The, Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Ron Prosor, felt that the vote undermined peace in the region.

These reactions that are presented the article make it seem that the vote must have been very controversial. However, if you look at the numbers, 138 countries voted for the sort-of membership. It makes sense to include quotes from the Israeli side and the Palestinian side of the issue, which are (of course) opposed, but I think that the lack of opinions from other countries makes the vote seem more divisive than it was.

As I read, I was surprised to see how many countries abstained from voting, and assumed that it must be because saying yes or no might be perceived as taking a side in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. I looked at the General Assembly's previous resolution in 2008 for comparison: United Nations General Assembly Resolution 62/243, which supported Azerbaijan's sovereignty and demanded that Armenian troops end their occupation, passed. There were 100 abstentions (found at http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs/2008/ga10693.doc.htm) , so perhaps I shouldn't be surprised by the 41 in the latest resolution.

This article talks about how American transportation is quickly changing with the economy as low as it is. For example planes will start charging for services that are normally free like food, leg room, and maybe even for bathrooms. To balance this out the planes will charge less for their own tickets. In the article it mentions a CEO talking about making standing room only parts of the plane that will have substantially lower ticket prices. This makes me wonder how this is safe. Cars are also being adapted to drive themselves to places and Volvo is reportedly working on a "road train" that will direct cars.
I think that some of this could be really cool when it happens like the car stuff, but all the innovations that the planes are supposedly having done seems really stupid. The thing that stood out to me the most was the creation of standing only parts. That just doesn't seem safe.

    1. I agree with you about the fact that it might not be safe, but they can install new "standing safety belts" like on a metro or something of that nature. The big problem i see with this is that the airlines don't really need the money that they are charging extra for. Keeping the ticket price where it is is best because it makes the consumer feel better about not paying for amenities that should be free. Interesting topic.

    http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2012/11/28/research-toxic-chemicals-in-your-living-room/?hpt=he_c2

According to recent studies chemicals found in couches, carpets, and pillows can be harmful-and helpful. Cushioning in these items is likely to contain flame retardants that can be harmful to both the people that own the and the environment. At the same time they can help prevent fires, or even slow the progression of a spreading fire. Cushioning contains these chemicals most likely to meet the fire safety standards that are set in many states although they being businesses with a profit as their goal, use the cheapest (also the least safe) chemicals. Many of the chemicals they are using are known to be unhealthy and many are still being studied to find out how truly safe they are.
I think that it is dangerous and unsafe to use chemicals when there is no knowledge of how bad for you they can be. In my opinion more studies should be conducted regarding these chemicals to ensure the safety of families. After all one of the frequently used fire retardants in couches and carpets is a chemical that is banned in children’s clothing because of health concerns. If it’s not safe to wear then how is it safe to walk on and to sit on? There seems like there should be more regulations put in place to keep a high health standard especially in cushioning (containing fire retardant chemicals) that are meant for children’s room or use.

Today I read an article titled Train cars with toxic cargo crash off New Jersey bridge into creek written by the CNN wire staff. I found this article on the CNN website, it was written on November 30, 2012.
A bridge in New Jersey collapsed on Friday. This tossed multiple train cars into Mantua creek, close the the Delaware river. This train was transporting toxic chemicals such as vinyl chloride. Vinyl chloride is extremely toxic and highly flammable, and it is used to make plastic and vinyl products. This dangerous chemical is now seeping into the creek. There were no crucial injuries, but the Underwood Memorial Hospital has treated 18 patients in the area with respiratory problems. Schools in the area are on lockdown, while people nearby the incident are being evacuated. Residents were told to remain indoors and to avoid opening doors and windows which could expose them to hazardous chemicals. Short-term exposure to extreme levels of vinyl chloride in the air can cause a number of symptoms dealing with the central nervous system. These include dizziness, drowsiness and headaches.
I think that this is a very serious incident. It can pose a number of problems not only related to people but also to the environment. This toxic chemical is currently destroying the ecosystem of the creek. If short term exposure is dangerous for humans, then who knows what it will do to the creek dwelling animals and those who feed off of them. Not to mention, it has caused a great discrepancy in the local community. People are confined to their houses, schools are on lockdown, and now a clean up crew must deal with the aftermath of this accident. A solution to this issue would be to build more secure bridges, or at least check on them to make sure they are in appropriate condition to be used by the public safely.
Some questions I have about this article are: Exactly how is this affecting the ecosystem of the creek? How long will this disaster take to clean up? How long will dangerous levels of vinyl chloride be present in the air?

The United Nations voted to stop the building of Jewish housing in Palestine to preserve the peace, but the Jewish leaders are going ahead and started to build. Many people feel that that will not help both sides at all and that its a bad endeavor and should not happen. The site is in Jerusalem, and it dangerously close to the barrier separating the Muslim part from the Jewish parts of the city. But one person, named Mr. Dayen, feels that Jews have a right to build in that area and this whole thing is being blown way out of proportion.
I’m really not sure what my opinion is on this topic. I do believe that they have the right to build in that area, but at the same time, you have to be worried about how that Muslim leaders will react. I think that because they have already shown very strong opposition to the building. A little thing like this could cause a very brutal civil war. I don't think that a civil war will end up happening but you can never know.

Undisclosed Finding by Mars Rover Fuels Intrigue

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/28/science/space/undisclosed-finding-by-mars-rover-fuels-intrigue.html?ref=science

On November 9, the rover Curiosity was sent to Mars by the United States, starting analyzing the sand and dust on the surface of Mars. Then a couple of days ago, scientists noticed something different in the sample of sand that the Curiosity had collected. Those working on the mission along with the rest of their team are the only ones who know what was so significant about this particular sample. As for the public, the only thing that they know is that it is something important enough that it will be going in history books. It was never mentioned what sort of data that it could possibly be. On Monday of next week, during the American Geophysical Union, the team of scientists will announce these latest findings to the public.

It's exciting to hear about a new discovery on Mars. I'm just not as excited for it now after I read the part in the article where it said the findings would be interesting rather than earthshaking. Another thing that is disappointing is that they have been wrong before about their discoveries. Take the time they claimed they found evidence of frozen reservoirs of water underneath the surface of Mars. That turned out to be entirely different and not quite as important. Would you want to get all hyped up about something, and then have it end in disappointment? I know I wouldn't. All I am saying about this article is that it's great that NASA has discovered something new, but it better not be a bust like the ones they have had earlier.

    1. As someone who is interested in discoveries relating to space, something like this is exciting. I agree that it would be quite disappointing if this new discovery does not live up to its expectations. It would also be somewhat annoying if this discovery was the type of thing that only scientists specializing in whatever field it's related to would be interested in. I suppose that any hopes of a groundbreaking discovery are nonexistent, but it would be nice if the discovery could at least be different from some of the other things turned up by NASA in the past.

      Delete
    2. I really wouldn't be excited if it wasn't earthshaking. I dont mind if they found water or anything else, what I would really care about was if they found life or evidence of life. Since we can already deduce that Mars probably had water and still does, we can also naturally assume that there may be life, but having a confirmation helps greatly. I don't really have interest in things that have already been proved. But if they have to do with some kind of life on other planets or mathematical equations like the Higgs Boson, I find it interesting.

    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-205_162-57549240/google-says-government-surveillance-is-on-the-rise/

On Friday there were three deaths in the city of Casper, Wyoming. One of them was a suspected suicide. A faculty member of Casper College was a victim. The bodies were that of a woman and two men. The weapon was not a firearm but something with a sharp edge. The three bodies were found at two different crime scenes. All the victims were said to know each other. The campus was put under lock down for the afternoon, but later informed no one was at large.

I think that this situation could have been avoided, had those people received the help they needed. If they had therapy or someone to talk to, they might have been more mentally stable and this catastrophe might have been averted. Those victims could have had families. What if they had a child back home? I think someone got angry and went after the other two, then realizing what they’d done, they took their own life. If you were going to Casper University and you knew the faculty member what would you think? It’s a sad scenario.

    1) Recently the United Nations voted in favor of upgrading the status of Palestine from a nonmember observer entity to nonmember observer state. This essentially means that Palestine would exist as an individual state itself. This supports a two-state plan in which Palestine and Israel could remain next to each other. Now, Israel has decided to expand into an area known as E1. This is not good news for the two state plan, for it blocks off Palestinian neighborhoods in East Jerusalem from cities such as Ramalah and Bethlehem. Many see this as Israel attempting to “punish” Palestine for being upgraded by the UN. Israeli officials refute these claims and state that they simply want to strengthen the Jerusalem area.

    2) In my opinion, this is a pretty obnoxious thing to do on Israel's part. Whether it was intentional or not, they are essentially ruining what many hoped for by settling into this area. Though Palestine has been “upgraded” it is now somewhat weakened due to the fact the it is partly split up. I think that Israel could have refrained from doing this, as even the United States, the country who has backed them up in so many of their endeavors, believes that this was a bad move. On the other hand, Israel has every legal right to do so, therefore not much can be done about it. I don't really like what Israel did, but I am not in any place to judge it.

Like some cancer patients in states where it's allowed, Mykayla Comstock uses cannabis as part of her treatment. Her mother, a long time advocate for medical use of the illegal drug, has been giving her a gram of oral cannabis oil every day, however, the idea of giving it to a child still gives pause to many adults who associate the drug with recreational use that breaks the law. Mykayla was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in July. Against her doctor's wishes, her mother, Erin Purchase, began giving her lime-flavored capsules filled with cannabis oil after she had a poor response to her initial chemotherapy treatment.

I actually think this current event is really interesting because a mother despite being told not to, is administering medical marijuana to her child. I don't know any parents out there that would do that, so I guess it is a new kind of thing. There has been a large amount of debate over whether medical marijuana should be legalized because there are some benefits to the currently illegal street drug. I think her mother is just taking the best care of her diagnosed child the best she can by giving her something to make her happy about after having chemotherapy.

    1. This is interesting. I think marijuana has been legalized in Washington and Colorado, although I think that it is for all marijuana, not just medical. The idea of a parent giving their child the drug if they have cancer, because it has worked, is okay, yet I think that the parent should just go to a different doctor and ask them first. But still, doing anything to help your kid is what I think most parents would do. I kind of don't understand your last sentence.

    2. I think that it's good that the mom realized the initial chemo treatments weren't working, and at least tried to take care of her daughter. It would have probably been better if she had communicated this concern to the doctors before she took action herself.

My current event was about Iran trading oil for gold with turkey. America is giving Iran oil and that’s where they get their supplies. Basically Iran takes the free oil form America and trades it for gold. This means that America is really paying for all the gold that Iran is taking back to there land. America found out about this after Iran had traded around 2 billion dollars worth of oil. Iran didn’t even tell America about there trade. Iran keeps the gold that America pays for.
I think that if Iran was going to make the trade at America expense then they should have at least consulted them first. Even if they just told them what they were doing it would have been better. It’s like taking your brothers phone, selling it with out asking, keeping the money and not even telling him what you did. The way that Iran and turkey traded, goods for goods, is how some of the people that lived in the high middle age got food or clothes. One question I had is how America ended up having to give Ian oil.

    1. This is very strange. I had no idea that America was just giving Iran free oil. Then, how did they not notice they never got goods in return. And why didn't Turkey step up to stop this? Seems fishy..... Someone should look into this, instead of letting money go down the drain.

“Mexico’s Peña Nieto Talks to TIME: ‘We Can Move Beyond the Drug War’” by Tim Padgett

    http://world.time.com/2012/11/30/mexicos-pena-nieto-talks-to-time-we-can-move-beyond-the-drug-war/?iid=gs-main-lead

As the title suggests, this article is about Mexico’s newly elected President Peña Nieto, who actually becomes president tomorrow, December 1, 2012. Nieto belongs to the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which, before 2000, ran Mexico with dictatorship; Nieto, however, claims that his party has ceased enough of its corruption to once again lead Mexico, as well as claiming that he will work to try to end Mexico’s various issues. In an interview, he states that to end the lack of economic advancement, he has gotten a huge labor reform law passed, wants to end the large business monopolies, and he is looking towards a constitutional amendment allowing private investors into the oil industry, state-owned. For the drug wars, a huge catalyst in Mexico’s safety, Nieto talked about how the legalizing of marijuana in Colorado and Washington will effect a change in how Mexico looks at the issue; he also wants to strengthen their judicial system and law enforcement, cracking down on drug business. Nieto has hopes for political righting, meaning stopping corruption (there has been much with the PRI) by a federal institute and commission. Socially, Nieto wants to aid people living in poverty by giving them productive options. Nieto’s election and the things he proposes for the future are important to studying World History because they tell of the bad things in the past, and hopefully, will change Mexico to a better country.

I liked this article, in the way it was written as an interview, the important questions asked, although it was kind of long. I’ve not had any personal experiences with Mexico; my aunt and uncle have been down multiple times; about the drug wars, I’ve heard stories and seen crime shows relating to them. This, Mexico’s drug background and a bright new future, does relate to what we’ve been studying in class. In the Lower Middle Ages, feuding lords and knights were fighting each other, for land and such, which parallels with the drug cartels fighting. Then, with the High Middle Ages, and the Commercial Revolution, towns, etc., feudalism dissolved, which might happen under Nieto’s presidency. Questions: Do you think that Nieto’s ideas for Mexico will actually work and help Mexico? How do you feel about the drug wars?

“Costliest Jet, Years in Making, Sees the Enemy: Budget Cuts”
    By Christopher Drew
    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/29/us/in-federal-budget-cutting-f-35-fighter-jet-is-at-risk.html?ref=us&_r=0
In the article that I selected, the author described the recent developments made that are soon to be an addition to our nations defense program. The main focus of the article is over the controversial costs and delayed production of the modern Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jet. The jet, which has taken almost two decades to be designed and tested, is facing questions from the pentagon as to whether or not it would be a good idea to continue buying them. The original plan, back in the 90’s, was to create one of the most advanced weapons systems to fate, able to cover the roles of jets for three different branches of the military. So far, the project has only reported disappointments, and many changes to the original plan have been made. The project, which would also be by far the most expensive military-related project to date, would cost taxpayers an estimated 369 billion dollars, approximately two-thirds the cost of the war in Afghanistan (589 billion).

I think that this recent issue has highlighted some major flaws in our nation’s government in past years. Not only has congress made some risky decisions of buying these planes before they have been tested, but the United States is now making excessive spending on the weapons programs. I personally think that our government should do some serious questioning on its priorities. The wars led on Iraq and Afghanistan proved to be very costly, and have had a significant role inn leading the U.S. into its debt. If our country was to focus its spending on more influential and important things, such as education and restoring the economy rather than fighting wars lost long ago, then we would be a more prominent and successful global force.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with you. I think that our country should be investing in more important problems than buying ultra-expensive planes. This is also a bad idea in my opinion because of the pulling out of troops in the middle east. We should be trying to get our troops home and not send more over.

    Why do People Cheat?
In this article, it talks about the impulses of cheating and whether people are immune to the temptation of cheating. For the past 15 years, multiple teachers have paid to have tests taken for them so they could teach in their district. Teachers are supposed to be a students’ moral model, so it rose a question to whether or not anyone is able to cheat with their conscience at risk of being disturbed. There was a study performed with a demographic of people, the experiment let the participant either do a short task or a considerably more difficult and longer task. The task they did not chose would be given to the next participant to do. They could also flip a coin to decide which task to do. Majority of the people tested either flipped the coin until they got the easier task, or they took the easy task to begin with. This showed that people are more likely to do things the easier way, even with moral issues intertwined. This is significant to the study of World History because the morality of humans have always been questioned, and the wavering of our moral compass is shown in our actions in history.
I enjoyed this article, not because I am interested in seeing teachers make mistakes, but rather the way they described the act of cheating. In other readings regarding this topic, the main points are; cheating is bad, you are just hurting yourself, there are serious consequences, etc. But in this article it almost justified why its completely normal to have the impulse to cheat. What sets you apart from being “good” is whether you act on that impulse. While I agree that cheating is not morally just at all, I have had impulses to cheat before. To me, this article was a lot more human than other cheating articles, less judging and more understanding towards the acts of cheating. Have you ever had the impulse to cheat on an important test?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This sounds like a very interesting article. It is sad that most people would choose to take the easier way out. Cheating isn't good! It is also terrible that teachers would cheat because, as you said, teachers are supposed to be role models.

Islamists unilaterally pass draft constitution in Egypt
    By the CNN Wire Staff

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/30/world/meast/egypt-protests/index.html?hpt=hp_t3

The recent history of Egypt has been one of dictatorial rule and unfair treatment of its citizens. Because of this, a popular uprising displaced President Hosni Mubarak and led to the election of its current President, Mohamed Morsy. Now the people and world are watching to see how the new government of Egypt takes shape. The government if creating a new constitution that should protect its citizens from arbitrary arrest and detention. However, some experts believe that the new constitution lacks freedoms associated with religion. For example, a citizen cannot defame the Prophet and does not recognize religions beyond Islam, Christianity or Judaism. So, while the constitution corrects some problems in the prior version, it may not go far enough to guarantee complete rights and freedoms. This is a very important development in World History because Egypt is a very influential country within the Middle East. Their course may set the tone for other countries such as Syria, Iran and Iraq.

I think the government of Egypt is progressing in the right direction with the new constitution. Like the United States Constitution, this constitution may require amendments and modification over time. However, protecting citizens from random and unreasonable arrest is positive development. I am hoping the country adopts and supports this effort even if it is not perfect. I can also see that there may be opposition to these changes by fundamentalist believers. Some questions that come to my mind are:

Will these changes cause more uprisings? Is another change in government possible?

How will these changes impact other countries in the region?

Will this make Eqypt a bigger power in the Middle East?

Will the government be willing to modify the document as needed?

Will the Egyptian police force be able to follow the new guidelines?

I would think that that is what insurance would be there to do in the first place.

Hurricane Sandy made landfall a month ago, and some residents of the Jersey Shore are just now returning to their demolished homes. The damage made by Sandy is extremely eye opening. For people returning to their homes on Ortley Beach, there is rubble as far as the eye can see. Not only do the houses appear to have been tossed around as if they were toys, but they also have suffered inside. Possessions are missing or broken, and health threatening mold us growing in some houses. Though it happened a month ago, it is now becoming clear to returning residents how long this is going to affect them.

I personally have very close friends and family both in New Jersey and the Lower West Side, who were left without electricity after the storm. I was very worried for them, especially when we first heard about the storm and didn’t know much about the extent of the damage yet. Now that people are returning to their homes and finding that they have nothing left, it is devastating. When these storms happen, it is always a shock. It is still shocking to see the images of the affects of the storm. What I wondered while I read this article was whether places like New Jersey and New York will assess the damage and use this information to somehow prevent such damage from happening in the future. I know that they already have attempted to build stormproof homes, and I wonder what advances in that technology are yet to come.

Chinese man sentenced to death for holding women in sex dungeon
    Date written: 11/30/12
    http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/30/world/asia/china-sex-dungeon/index.html

In the article that I read, a Chinese man, Li Hao, 35, was convicted of murder, rape, organized prostitution, illegal detention, and selling pornography. Li is married with a son and worked for technological supervision bureau in the city in Henan province. Li dug a dungeon in the basement of the residential compound that he bought in 2009 and tricked six girls into staying there, later kidnapping them and forcing them into the dungeon. Li repeatedly raped the women, forced them into pornographic videos, and making them have sex with other customers. Three of the six women were also found guilty of the murder of two of the other women being held captive. It wasn’t until one of the women escaped from the dungeon that the police heard about the tragedy. They were then able to locate Li and arrest him.
While reading this article, I was in major disbelief: how could someone ever do such a thing? It’s sickening to me that people have such a cold heart to ruin other innocent peoples lives. I also don’t see the motive that was behind this incident because he was a working man who was married, had a child, and was able to support and stabilize his family. I think that Li being sentenced the death penalty is a good punishment- it’s definitely what he deserves for ruining these women’s lives. This is such a tragedy and my heart goes out to all of the people whose lives were impacted by this traumatic event. Although this article has nothing to do with what we’re learning about in class and will never become a major part of our world’s history, it impacted the history of the six women who were the innocent victims of this incident which is all the more reason for others to know about what happened.

In Michigan a couple of days ago a teacher was forced to take unpaid leave. This was due to her allowing a student to play a clean song in front of the class. The song was “Same Love” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. In Macklemore’s own words he says, “It was written with the hope that it would facilitate dialogue and through those conversations understanding and empathy would emerge.” The song calls for equality of marriage in America. A student said the song made him feel insulted and that led to the punishment of the teacher. This shows that despite the strides towards equality that we have made we still need lots of progress.
I think that this is a horrible thing. I mean a person can’t even tell their beliefs without being punished. It shows the issues of our society. I believe that this should not be an issue at all in the twenty first century. This is somewhat similar to the situation that woman were in during the middle ages.

The student rode in a cab and drove to martin luther kind blvd and came back with a gun in a cab. The student told the cab driver his plan of shooting and killing many students in school. The cab drive trying talking to the student trying to convince him from not shooting. The student responded by threatening he cab drive with death. When the police when to the students mothers home they found a thousand bags of heroine a shot gun and he is now has a list of charges and remains in custody. In my opinion the cab driver had a lot of courage to try to speak with the student knowing that the student had a weapon on him.

A massive exploding black hole has released millions of billions of particles into space. The blast was the BIGGEST ever recorded, and thus scientists are studying it very closely. It is 5 times larger than the runner up in terms of quasar outflow. The black hole is emitting material weighing 400 times the mass of our sun EVERY year. The black hole is said to be over a 1000 times larger than the one at the center of the Milky Way.

I thought this was incredibly cool. The sheer size of the black hole astounds me, as it is big enough to swallow our hole solar system (easily). That is also a lot of material being emitted. I wonder if some day some of those things will make it to earth. That would actually be pretty cool...

My article was about four women in the military who were suing for not being allowed to fight on the ground. U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Jennifer Hunt and three others are pressuring the courts to drop the policy saying that women are not allowed to serve in the same capacity as men. This law prevents them from receiving military promotions that they deserve. Interestingly, this comes just a year after gays were banned from openly serving in the military. This lawsuit represents an important step forwards in total equality for people of all genders and sexual orientations.

I am actually kind of ticked off that women are not allowed to fight on the ground. We are every bit as brave as men are. It is an individual's choice wether or not they want to risk their life for their country. I also have a question: how is being a fighter pilot less dangerous then being on the ground? When you are flying you have all kinds of stuff flying at you and you have to be careful not to crash into anything. That really takes guts. Also, if women aren't strong enough to fight on the ground, then how did they pass the military entrance exam?

Undisclosed Finding by Mars Rover Fuels Intrigue, by Kenneth Chang

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/28/science/space/undisclosed-finding-by-mars-rover-fuels-intrigue.html?ref=science&_r=0
Earlier this year, a rover was launched by NASA to go to Mars. It was called Curiosity and it landed on November 5th. Its mission was to find evidence of life on Mars. Now, intrigue is building about Curiosity's discoveries. It started when John P. Grotzinger, in an interview on NPR, said “This data is going to be one for the history books. It’s looking really good.” This sparked questions of what has Curiosity found on Mars? The mission's results could be something revolutionary, but NASA officials are saying that they probably aren't so unexpected. According to Guy Webster, a spokesperson for NASA, the results will be "interesting" and not "earth shaking". But whatever it is, the news from Mars will be unexpected and intriguing.
My opinion on this article is that if this finding is about life on Mars, Curiosity's discoveries will change how we think about going to the planet. This topic is very important in the space exploration field because Mars is the next place that humans will go. So, based on these reasons, I think this article is very important because whether or not life can survive on Mars will dictate how we approach space exploration in the future. In my personal experience, the space business has changed significantly. When I was younger the field was nearly completely managed by governments, but now private companies hold a large share of the market. I think if Curiosity's discoveries are important at all, the science community will be changed a lot. My only question about this article is, when will Curiosity's mission be disclosed and what will it tell us?

Train cars with toxic cargo fall off New Jersey Bridge

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/30/us/new-jersey-train-derail/index.html?hpt=hp_t3
On Friday, November 30, a train carrying toxic chemicals derailed when the New Jersey Bridge crumpled beneath it. Four train cars crashed into the creek, with two others dangling precariously upon the edge. An evacuation for the people was promptly called and cleanup crews got to work immediately. The toxic chemical that leaked was apparently Vinyl Chloride. No apparent environment disaster seems to have occurred, although officials are looking into the history and reconstruction of the collapsed bridge.

The Article stated that three major trains crossed the bridge every day. It also stated that it was reconstructed just three years ago. Considering current regulations, knowledge of heavy weights going over the bridge, and a recommended weight margin of error, it comes to a surprise to me that the bridge actually collapsed. Other bridges are much longer and have not been reconstructed for long times with heavier traffic, whereas this bridge broke in three years. I think the people constructing the bridge should have thought it through more and allowed at least a 10 ton margin of error. Considering an accident like this, they could have been accused of manslaughter if a train with people crossed it. They should be happy, despite the charges that they face, because they could have faced worse consequences should the chance have arisen.

Average tuition costs for college are $8,240 for an in-state student going to a public university and for private college, it’s $28,500 per year, according to College Board. Belmont Abbey is a small private college that is located near Charlotte, North Carolina. Belmont Abbey has announced that it is "resetting" its tuition, reducing it by 33% next fall for incoming freshmen and transfer students. The tuition cost went from $27,600 to $18,500. William Thierfelder, president of Belmont Abbey College, says that most students are so discouraged with the "sticker price" of college that they don’t even consider applying to a school they think is beyond their families’ means.
I think that this is a good thing, because in a way, it helps everyone achieve higher education. People once unable to afford great private colleges would be able to get the education they want. If all colleges dropped their tuition costs, the people that are financially unable to afford a regular private college tuition would be able to go to the college they want. This could bring forth a new generation of innovators and inventors.

On November 17, Jennifer Foster took a picture of a NYPD officer giving a pair of socks and boots to a homeless man. This was a random act of kindness, and the officer asked for nothing in return. This photo was later put on Facebook and the police officer was identified as Larry DePrimo of Holbrook, Long Island. He was overheard saying, “'I have these size 12 boots for you, they are all-weather. Let's put them on and take care of you," to the homeless man.

I was very touched by this story. Random acts of kindness rarely happen these days, so it made me very happy when I heard of this kind man helping out someone in need. On a cold night in New York with no socks, that man must have been freezing. The boots definitely made his day. I think more people need to show kindness like this police officer did. The world would certainly be a better place if we did.

New Jersey bridge collapse derails freight train; chemical leaks

On November 30, 2012 a railroad bridge collapsed in Paulsboro New Jersey above a creek. This caused 7 of the 82 cars on a conrail freight train to derail and spill more than 12,000 gallons of toxic industrial chemical into the waterway which feeds into the Delaware river. Residents were initially told to stay indoors with windows close because of the toxic fumes, but were allowed to leave once the chemical had been contained in the water.

I think that it is very bad that a railroad bridge used by trains carrying chemicals is not built more sturdy. If the train had been carrying more dangerous chemicals that were more difficult to contain, then this would have been much more serious.

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/30/travel/flight-attendants-osha/index.html?hpt=us_c2

Flight attendants often try their best to make the flight comfortable for those flying, but they can get injured or sick while in the air. The OSHA, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, said that they would now care for sick or injured flight attendants who are in the air as well as on the ground. This is very important because not all airlines have the right equipment for injuries. Flight attendants are also exposed to many different airborne sicknesses and dangerous substances. This should create a more healthy environment in the airplane for both the workers as well as the passengers. This policy has not been put into effect because there are many groups that think it is unnecessary.

I think it's important that flight attendants are cared for because the airplane is their workspace and it's impossible not to get hurt. I understand some people may think it is unnecessary because it may cost more money, but the health of the attendants is very important also. I also think many jobs, such as a flight attendant, are often overlooked and forgotten. This job is actually fairly dangerous and if other workers can have insurance, they should have ties with the OSHA. I think it would also help the flight attendants just knowing that people care about their safety, and not only of the safety of the paying passengers.

On Friday, November 30th a bridge failed in Paulsboro, New Jersey and 4 train cars crashed into a creek near the Delaware River with at least one of them containing toxic chemicals. This chemical is called Vinyl chloride and is used to make plastic and vinyl products. It is also highly toxic and highly flammable. The chemicals short term effects on the body are dizziness, drowsiness and headaches. The bridge that caused problems had been faulty for a while, and 3 major trains go across it a day. 71 people have been to the hospital concerning the crash and 68 have been discharged, the other three in stable condition. The state officials say there is no environmental emergency and that they are in a stable situation right now.
It’s hard for me to believe how lightly they take all of this. First of all, that they wouldn’t have thought about the faulty bridge that has 3 major trains coming across it a day, let alone a train full of highly toxic chemicals. They should have taken into consideration the damage that they could have done (and what is now happening) and fixed it before it turned into what it is now. Also, they say it is highly toxic and highly flammable but then they go on to say oh there is nothing to worry about. Somehow I feel like this is worse than they are making it out to be. I just hope that they can clear it up without anyone else getting hurt and they FIX THAT BRIDGE! It worries me to know that they would let that happen when they could have prevented it.

“Brain model may help build human-like robot” by Elizabeth Landau
"Brain Model May Help Build Human-like Robot." The Chart RSS. CNN, Web. 29 Nov. 2012.
    .

The human brain is one of the most complex mechanisms created by nature on planet Earth. Since the beginning of time, the development of a control system inside organisms was well underway. Many eons later, scientists today are trying to mimic the power of nature to program a human-like robot. Chris Eliasmith from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada has recently constructed an artificial brain called SPAUN (Semantic Pointer Architecture Unified Network), in order to further understand injuries to one’s brain; understanding how the ancient organ affect human actions, while applying it to modern technology. As a computer device, a camera takes in the surrounding stimuli, and answers mathematical questions in response to a request. According to scientists, the brain and the SPAUN both communicate through neurons; where the change in voltage pattern “spikes” carries info from one nerve cell to the next. Simpler than a human brain, it recognizes patterns with accuracy. However, the time in which it operates in comparison to real world events is not sufficient enough. Scientists believe that these qualities will make the robot seem more human-like. According to other researchers, the brain shows no evidence of brain development, and knowledge was merely programmed. By researching the impacts of different nerve voltage spikes on the brain, one may better understand the reason for voluntary actions, and how people in history have viewed the human brain; while creating forms of intelligent machinery. This article is significant to the study of World History, for in the past, humans have furthered research on the nervous system that later impacted society; similar to the scientists of today. Electrical muscle stimulation was developed in the 1700’s, which lead to the development of a muscle treatment as well as an exercise opinion through electrical signals.
Scientists have hoped to create an organ identical or near identical to the brain in complexity and usefulness during the past few years. Due to it being a relatively new field of research, I believe that it is an extremely difficult task to complete. With technology as being dominated with silicon chips and hardware, the dynamic capacity of a machine for learning capabilities is not as easy to pursue. During classes at school, the teaching of stimuli and how it affects the human brain in various ways is related to this article, except in a mechanic medium. The furthering of science and technology research has existed since antiquity, such as the many scientists of the past centuries’ contributions to society being taught in World History class. Advancing technologically has been a staple in human lives, from the invention of the wheel to the invention of a mechanic brain. What if, the possibility that a perfect mechanical brain was developed? How would it affect society today?

Is Medical Marijuana Safe for Children?
By Maia Szalavitz, Fri November 30, 2012

This article, "Is Medical Marijuana Safe for Children?", concerns a 7 year old girl named Mykayla Comstock who has leukemia. Mykayla takes a lime-flavored tablet filled with cannabis oil (marijuana) every morning. Mykayla livess in Oregon, where medical marijuana is legal. She takes the drug to ease her pain and nausea. In August, Mykayla went into remission without having to have a bone marrow transplant; a lot of doctors think it has to do with her taking medical marijuana. Her doctors know Mykayla takes the drug (and approve), but don't talk about it as treatment to her. This article is related to world history because the topic of legal marijuana is being discussed worldwide. The doctor Igor Grant had to get studies from other countries to research on this topic.

I personally think that the use of medical marijuana is pretty safe for Mykayla. It eases her pain and he nausea, so why not let her take it? She's not actually smoking a joint or something like that. Mykayla takes cannabis oil in pills, she doesn't smoke it. I know about a couple people with cancer; if they could have the option of taking medical marijuana to help them, they would right away. A question I still have though is this: If her mom gives the drug to her and the dad is opposed, why is she still getting the drug if it's fifty-fifty?

She is accused of giving false information to a police officer, obstructing or resisting a police officer in performance of his duty and reckless driving, according to the city attorney's office. She has been to court nineteen times since 2011, and been in rehab for a total of over 250 days. This is important to world history because celebrities are a big part of our culture as Americans.

This article shows the innate problems with our society, in that most of our stars get into terrible, criminal things and we love them anyway. I don’t understand why celebrities aren't held to the same standard as everyone else. They do drugs and steal things and get in fights, but their super expensive lawyers get them off scot free. Stars seem to live in a different world entirely. Like R. Patz and K. Stew just got back together after she cheated on him, but now they are apparently having a kid. At least that’s what I saw on the cover of US weekly in the checkout line at the food lion. In conclusion, the world that celebrities live in is different from ours and we need to fix some things.

But you probably think, what rate are they being charged if they haven’t been able to use any power? They are being charged based on what they had paid in the years past, and are currently what they are being charged. I think about what would be going through my head if this had happened to me, especially directly after a tragic hurricane has hit. In my opinion, I think that these people have many other things to worry about other than their electric bill. They should be able to think about their family, how they will work, but not how they are being charged for something they are in no control over.

Train cars with toxic cargo fall off New Jersey bridge
This article is about a tragic accident of several train cars falling off of a bridge with toxic cargo. Toxic cargo is not only dangerous, but it caused several schools to go into lockdown just because of the hazard of being near such harmful chemicals. Seventy-one people were taken to the hospital and sixty-eight made it out okay, although three are still left in poor condition. Some areas nearby were even evacuated because of the accident. The accident was caused by an old bridge and too many train cars going over it.
I think that accidents like these should not happen. Bridges should be made more stable and if they are old with age, then they should be refurbished so that trains can continue to use them for transport. Chemicals and toxic waste like this can't just be floating around in the air because it harms not only the environment around it, but the people, too. Something that causes people to evacuate an area is very serious and there should be precautions taken to prevent things like this from happening. It damages our earth and where we live.

Mykayla Comstock is a seven year old girl who lives in Oregon with her loving parents. Sadly, Mykayla was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in July. She had poor response to her chemotherapy treatment, so Mykayla started taking capsules filled with cannabis oil. Even though the doctors didn’t want her to take them, Mykayla’s mom started giving them to her. Luckily, medical marijuana is legal in Oregon, but many adults are against giving it to children. The cannabis help ease Mykayla’s pain and nausea during her chemotherapy. Experts say that the effects of the drug on child development are unknown and the marijuana can be addictive, but it may reduce the symptoms and side effects of radiation and chemotherapy. This article is significant to the study of World History because it shows how far our technology has come. To turn a drug into a helpful medication is life changing.

In my opinion, I like the idea of this article. Helping ease the rain of cancer and it’s treatment is one step closer to curing cancer. I like how even though the doctor was against giving Mykayla the cannabis, Mykayla’s mother still gave it to her to ease her pain. It reminded me of how much my parents love me and how they will do anything to protect me. What her mother did also reminded me of a father on a T.V. show. His son was dying of a spider bite, and the only way of curing him was to smuggle in illegal medicine from Mexico. He got the medication and saved his son, even though it was illegal. A question that I had about the article was why some people would disagree with something if it was easing a little girls pain.

There is also a tram like chain of driverless cars beung developed in europe. Also trains are being used more, but they still need to be improved.

I think this is really cool. I think this has a lot of potential to reduce greenhouse gas emmisions by insane amounts. Trains are more efficient than cars and driverless cars will meen less traffic jams which release huge amounts of gas. Also new plane designs will cut down.

Starting in 2013, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Tennessee are planning to add at least 300 hours to the school year. They intend to first test the program in 40 schools which will affect 20000 students. Then they plan to expand the program to expand the program into districts that need it most. With the extra time the school plan to add things including arts, music and help for needy students. Already 1000 US schools have an expanded schedule and the funds to extend the schedules in other schools will come from other federal programs. Also teachers pose a threat to making school days longer, in Chicago teachers held a strike for 7 days until the Mayor finally extended the school day, but the teachers also got more benefits.

Personally, I don’t want a longer school day because it would negatively impact my extracurricular activities like sports. Having a longer school day would mean that I would get home later and I would not have time for sports or anything else. I think that instead of extending school hours, they should work on improve what is being taught. Making better material to teach, training teachers and getting better resources inside the classroom could improve education much more than just extending school hours. Also the article states that in countries with high performing schools, students actually spend less time in the classroom than in the USA.

I know the NFL and NHL both take many precautions to protect there players but there probably is more they can do. They can atleast try to punish or prevent uneccesary helmet to helmet hits. Also players should take longer breaks after injuries to prevent them from worsening. If the NFL and NHL were doing there best to prevent injuries there wouldn’t be as many mental illness related deaths in players like the cheifs linebacker that died just the other day. What do you think the best way to prevent a head injury is.

Title:2022: Cheap flights more rail and hands-free cars
    Authrr:TomvPatterson CNN
    Date 11/30/12
    Url:http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/27/travel/future-travel/index.html? hpt=hp_c1
This article stated talking about crazy inventions in technology that I never thought of ever happening. They say that they will be able to make cars that will be able to drive themselves by 2022. They also talked about different ways of transportation in airplanes and tains. Patterson says that people of all ages will be able to drive "cars" even if they had know idea what they where doing because the car drives itself.
When I saw this I was very shocked. All that I thought was there is know why that something like this could ever happen. Then I began to come a beliver when I read this arlrticle. I can't wait to really see what happen with advances in technologys I think that cars like these are going to very good for the world because there will be much less accidents on the roads and that is the most important thing.

Google says government surveillance is on the rise
    Author: Chenda Ngak
    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-205_162-57549240/google-says-government-surveillance-is-on-the-rise/

    1) The article is about how the government is watching more of what we do online. The amount of government surveillance in previous years has been slowly rising upwards. This is from google's transparency act that began in 2009. Google in this reports the amount of data used by the government and everyday people. Thanks to google other sites have begun to do this too.

    2) In my opinion the government should not be entitled to the right to watch what we do online, unless they have a reason to suspect that person. The government should stay out of peoples social lives. My reason for believing this is what if they misinterpret a inside joke to mean that those innocent would be terrorists.
The government should be allowed to monitor how often certain sites are used, but not who uses them. That is my opinion.

    Morsi’s Moment by Bobby Gosh
    November 28, 2012
    http://world.time.com/2012/11/28/morsis-moment/

Mohammed Morsi is one of the most important men in the Middle East right now. Mohammed had successfully brokered a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, and had displayed excellent political skills. However, he then grabbed for more. On November 22nd he issued an emergency decree in which he gave himself more powers, including immunity for his decisions from judicial challenge. This means that his decisions cannot be challenged by anyone and that he could decide on something no one agrees with.

Campus cops shoot, kill graduate student at California College
    http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2012/12/09/campus-cops-shoot-kill-graduate-student-at-california-college/?hpt=us_c2

This article talks about grad student Bartholomew Williams, who was 28 had an altercation with police Saturday night. The police followed Williams into the dormitory hallway where an altercation occurred and police drew their weapons and shot at Williams, he was dead at the scene. A police officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

My opinion about this article is that if Williams threatened the police officers with a weapon then it is fine that they shot him because they were in fear of their lives, but if Williams did not have a weapon then they obviously had more man power and they could have arrested him with chargers of assault. I don't think that someone should have died during this incident.

Race on to find Gulf coast dolphin killer
    http://www.etix.com/ticket/online/performanceSearch.jsp?performance_id=1652098&search_source=etix

At a dolphin birthing area, someone has been slaughtering the dolphins. There is a desperate search going on now to find the killer. The discovery of this persons identity is crucial because they need to catch them before birthing season. The killer has so far slaughtered at least dolphins. The villain does not only kill the dolphins, but they mutilate them and take the missing parts with them. The public is now stepping in to help find the killer
