Police name suspect in New Orleans parade shooting
By Jason Morris and Catherine Shoichet on 5/14/13

Louisiana police have identified 19 year old Akein Scott as the primary suspect for a shooting in New Orleans. The shooting occurred at New Orleans Mother's day parade this Sunday. It resulted in the injury of 19 people, three in critical condition. Apparently, someone ran into the crowd during the parade and started shooting. This is the third occurrence of gun violence during holiday celebrations in New Orleans this year. The suspect was identified when police reviewed surveillance tape, but the suspect hasn't been caught yet. This event serves as proof of the recent crime spark in New Orleans which is worrying many. There is speculation that the shooting might be gang related.

I find this event very sad and worrying. I feel sad for the victims of this horrible shooting. This also worries me because there has been a big increase in crimes like this recently (the Boston marathon). It troubles me that people would bring violence and weapons to celebratory events. I mean, who would shoot people at a parade? It just shows what some people have come to these days. This event sort of relates to Stalin's Great Purge, where he executed people publicly. Also, is this person the real/only suspect?

"Brazilian Court Council Removes a Barrier to Same-Sex Marriage," by Simon Romero, http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/15/world/americas/brazilian-court-council-removes-a-barrier-to-same-sex-marriage.html?ref=world&_r=0

Yay, at least some people have some sense! Okay, yeah, I know that was a really un-PC comment. But still. If the largest country in Latin America can legalize gay marriage, why can't the United States (thanks, Amendment One). I'm so glad this has happened though. I feel like putting boundaries on really personal choices (such as marriage) are not a great way for legislature (helloooo, Congress) to spend hours and days and weeks and years arguing about. There are more important things. And seriously, guys. It's not up to YOU to decide who gets married to who. It's none of your business. If a girl wants to put a ring on a girl's finger, or a guy wants to put a ring on a guy's finger, well, screw you!

All right, so that might not have been the best way to put it. I really think that gay marriage should be legalized though. Anyone ever heard "Same Love" by Macklemore? (Great song) There's this one quote that really stands out to me. "America the brave, still fears what we don't know." I think that's striking. It's kind of beautiful, actually. And he's right. Fearing the unknown won't get us anywhere, so why not give it a try, America?

Title: Obama struggles with rocky start to second term

The IRS targeted conservative groups. They did this by secretly accessing the journalist’s phone records. This lead to finding out about the misleading statements that were said about the Benghazi terrorist attack. There were headlines during the past week that said that the administration was in a potential scandal. This provided Barack Obama’s “haters” ;) with plenty of excuses to mess up his agenda for the early months of his second term. This scenario brings a comparison with Obama and earlier presidents who also faced controversies in their second terms. A rocky start to a president’s second term doesn’t always mean that the president’s agenda will be ruined. Reagan and Clinton both had the same thing happen to them, but pulled away. Jay Carney, a White House spokesman, said that the controversies have a small connection to the second term goals of Barack Obama.
I think that it is crazy that there are people who are openly against Barack Obama in the first place. I could see if it was a dictator who was being ridiculous, but it’s Obama! He has done a great job and has not made any horrendous decisions, at least none that I’m aware of. Also, no one should be messing with the president’s agenda. It should be classified and Republics should not be negatively influencing the president in ways that he does not want them to be. I do wonder a couple of things though. How are people messing up the president’s agenda for the second term?

FBI to review honeymooner’s 2005 cruise ship death

In 2005, a man named George Smith was on a honeymoon with his wife. They were on a cruise with the Royal Caribbean. Smith was put overboard at some point during the cruise. All that was left of him was a bloody handprint on the side of the ship where he was probably holding on for his life. The Royal Caribbean was sued by George’s wife. George’s family believed it was murder, but had no way to prove it was, and who did it. Recently, a video surfaced from the cruise showing three Russian-American passengers on the same ship joking about George’s death. These passengers had been hanging out earlier with George in the casino and the ship’s disco. The FBI is going to review this case with the new evidence and hopefully set things right.

This cruise ship death saddens me. Smith was on the cruise for his honeymoon, expecting to have a fantastic time, but clearly that was not how it went. I feel bad for his wife, just newly married and not long after a widow. I wonder what really happened to Smith, and if the Russian-Americans really were involved in Smith’s death. I do not think it is fair to jump to conclusions, but I do believe those men need to be more thoroughly investigated. Hopefully the truth will come out and leave Smith’s family, finally, with closure.

Lucky downloader to win $10,000 in App Store

Sometime very soon, probably Wednesday, somebody will download the 50 billionth app from Apple's online App Store.Apple will give the lucky downloader a $10,000 iTunes gift card. The next 50 people to download an app after that will each receive a $500 gift card.

Personally I think that giving random lucky winners a prize if they are the person to have downloaded 50 billionth app is an excellent idea. The app store is a great hit in the world today.. like they say there is an app for everything..even one that could give you a $10,000 reward. Who wouldn't be pleased with that?

A man named Joe Azougar was recently attacked by a bear. He was in his house minding his own business when he heard a rumbling sound, and he turned around to see a huge bear. It attacked and killed Azougar's dog, and then tried to kill Azougar himself. The bear took him outside and continued to maul him, but luckily two women drove by. They honked the car which scared the bear, and rescued Azougar.

I think it is horrible that this happened to such an innocent person. I also feel really bad for the dog. He was actually trying to defend Azougar by barking. I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else who lives near this man. Azougar went to the hospital, got surgery, and is doing much better now.

President Barack Obama vowed Wednesday to hold accountable those at the Internal Revenue Service involved in the targeting of conservative groups applying for federal tax-exempt status, beginning with the resignation of the agency's acting commissioner.
The president said the "misconduct" detailed in the IRS Inspector General's report released Tuesday over the singling out of conservative groups is "inexcusable."
"Americans have a right to be angry about, and I'm angry about it," Obama said.
I think that while this was definitely a misconduct and some people might be mad about it, its not the end of the world. President Obama did a good thing to recognize this, but it will eventually go away and everything will be back to normal.

How I Stole 14 million from a bank

    http://money.cnn.com/2013/05/15/technology/security/bank-heist/index.html

This article is about a man who managed to steal 14 million dollars from a bank with relative ease. Since he already had some connection with the bank, he didn't have any problem getting into the accounts, and managed to create an account for himself with 14 million dollars on it. He wasn't actually planning to steal it, though. He just asked the bank to give him his recept, and when they realized that there was 14 million dollars on it, they didn't let him withdraw the money.
This isn't very concerning for me, because I do have a bank account, but my life isn't dependent on it, like adult's lives are. Even so, this is still a little disturbing, because of the ease the man "stole" the 14 million dollars. Even though he din't take it from someone's account, what is to prevent other people from doing it? I think that banks need to beef up their internet security.

Double-decker Florida treehouse may have to come down

Lynn Tran and her husband, Richard Hazen, built a tree house on their property. It really is a two-story deck that has been altered a bit. They say that at the time they had the permission of Holmes's Beach. Now, Holmes's beach is telling them they must tear it down. If they don't, they will have to pay a fine of 500 dollars a day.
I don't think that it's right that Holmes's beach could have given permission to Lynn and Richard to build the tree house and then take it back. Also, I don't see what the big deal is. It's just a tree house! Lynn and Richard should be allowed to keep it without paying money.

Title: Storm hits North Texas; 6 dead douzens injured
Summary: In Northern Texas last tuesday, atleast 10 tornadoes were sighted touching down in the area. Around 110 homes were destroyed leaving 100s homeless and 7 people missing. Six people wre reported dead from the storm and the seven missing were recently found yestrday in a near by neighborhood under piles of debree. Official say that the storms came out of no where. The weather stations didn't predict them coming as well as the local citizens. The main reason everyone was so shook up by the storm was that they were unprepared. Since Texas is a very flat region, most homes were a prime hit for a tornado, riping the homes right off the ground.
In my opinion, there's nothing we can do about natural storms, except be prepared for when they strike. Many famillies had basements and food supplies but wree unable to access them due to the fact that they were caught off gaurd. Many people feel that if the local news stations could of predicted this storm, that there would be less damage. I think the same thing. Especially if a weatherman cant predict 10 tornadoes coming.

    3D Printing on the Moon/Live Science - Miriam Kramer/04 February 2013

    -URL: http://www.livescience.com/26858-moon-colony-3d-printing-lunar-dirt.html

This article is about 3D printing on the moon. They are trying to use moon dirt as a material for 3D printing to build structures on the moon. They would use robots to build the structures instead of humans so that there isn't so much risk or cost involved.
My opinion is that this is a great idea. 3d printing is interesting because there is no building involved and it can be done by robots. The fact that we can use robots instead of humans is great because it eliminates a lot of risk. Another good thing is that the only materials needed are the robots and moon dirt. this makes the project relatively inexpensive.
My dad has been thinking about getting a 3D printer for making small art things and i think its a great idea. 3D printers have a huge range of uses.

    URL: http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/14/us/new-york-fbi-cruise-death/index.html?hpt=hp_t3

    Summary:
Back in 2005, a man named George Smith (26 years old) was on a cruise, honeymooning when he mysteriously died. The family suspected it was murder, but the idea was dismissed. Eight years later, the cruise has given over some videos, showing potential suspects of the murder. In 2005, blood was found in Smiths sheets and outside his door and his wife was passed out in the hallway. Also there was a bloody handprint found on the side of the boat (probably when smith was grasping onto the boat before dropping into the water). The two suspects were Russian-American men who became friends with Smith a couple nights before his death. The cruise footage shows both doing gang signs and talking about smith the night after his death.

    My opinion:
This is a tough case. Especially since it’s been eight years since he has died. I don’t think that they have enough evidence to accuse the suspects of the murder. I think its very likely that they did commit the crime, but since the evidence is just two men doing gang signs, this case will be a hard one. I’m not sure why Smith’s wife isn’t a suspect though. Yes, she was passed out in the hallway but that doesn’t mean that she didn’t kill Smith first. Its unlikely, but if the two men are to be tried then she should be too.

My current event is about 10 tornados that hit a city in northern Texas. Six people were killed and seven are currently missing. The police are searching everywhere trying to find the missing people. The sheriff of the city said that they would not stop looking for these people until they have thoroughly searched the entire city. Many buildings were damages and lots of houses lot their roofs. The weather men came to look at the damage and said they found clues that hinted that at least one of the tornados were EF4. Some people who were interviewed said that the roofs to their houses were torn of by the tornados and they could see that they were close to the houses.

It’s amazing there can be so many tornados I one area at a time. If I had been there I would have been really scared. I have never been near a tornado so I can’t really relate but I can imagine how scary it would have been. This article can relate to what we are studding in class. During time period we are looking at there wasn’t much technology and we are much more advanced now then they were. I think that a lot of people lived because they had proper houses and technology to help them. People back then didn’t have that sort of stuff. I would probably be more difficult for people back then than it was today. I didn’t really have any questions but I guess I would ask how they intended to do if they didn’t find the missing people.

He said Boston Marathon bombing victims were collateral damage in a strike meant as payback for U.S. wars in Muslim lands, the surviving suspect wrote in a message scribbled on the boat where he was found hiding, a law enforcement source told CNN Thursday. He also claimed that one attack on a Muslim is an attack on all Muslims.
I think that it is horrible that he hurt and killed a bunch of innocent people as payback. These people didn’t have anything to do with the US’s decision to go to war in Iraq. This shows that the suspect obviously had extremist ideas.

A shooting occurred in New Orleans at a parade last week on Mother’s Day. A man charged at the crowd of parade goers and opened fire. 19 people were wounded and 3 are in critical condition. The suspect is known to be a gang member and is faced with 20 counts of attempt murder and a 10 million dollar bail. This is one of several shootings that have taken place during gathering this year including the Boston Marathon shooting and a shooting at the Martin Luther King parade. This shooting renewed concerns about gun violence in the city or New Orleans. Images of the parade show a man in a white shirt running towards the crowd opening fire as people drop to the ground.
Again….really… why is all of this happening. People go to these events trying to have a good time. For a person to disrupt people’s fun and change some people’s lives for life is an unthinkable crime. Gun violence regulation needs to be taken to a next level. Steps need to be taken to stop things like this from happening. Also police should be tracking down these city gangs and stopping the gang violence as well. So many people have been hurt and killed in the past few months from these events and it is terrible that people need to be worried for their lives when coming out of their house.
This article relates to what we are learning in World History class because it is talking about violence. During post WW1 revolts and fights were taking place, which included violence. Also this event happened on a Sunday, which relates to the fight called “Bloody Sunday” during the time we are studying. What can people do to prevent things like this from happening? Are the 3 in critical condition okay?

In Ganza the palestinian officials are very strict on the type of things brought into the country. As a result many things are snuck into Ganza from its neighbor Egypt. There are hundreds of secret tunnels connects the two countries along their borders. Recently the new hot item being smuggled, besides guns and cars, is KFC. In Ganza there is no fast food, so things like KFC and other fast foods are considered to be quite tasty. Recently the palestinian officials have let up. So know a KFC meal is about 30 dollars in US currency.

    USA Today, May 16, 2013
    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/05/16/pool-water-feces/2166195/

The summer is a time for fun, relaxation, and definitely pools. But be careful not to swallow the water. A new study found signs of feces in over half of Atlanta’s pools last summer. The primary cause for this is because swimmers aren’t showering prior to getting in the pool. If you swallow too much of this water, the consequence can be serious. To keep clean, the CDC recommends: stay out of swimming water when you have diarrhea, shower with soap prior to swimming, avoid swallowing the water.

As swimmer, I find this slightly disturbing. I knew pool water was filthy, but not THAT gross. I don’t think we’ll be able to fix this very easily. People just want swim; they don’t care if they’re covered in poop. The best way to solve this is to find better chemicals to keep pools clean. That, and teach people to better control their bladders.

Basically, scientist can use gene research to make wolves more docile. Wolves were once the same as dogs, and now they can domesticate wolves to serve as humans’ best friends. Their results are incredible and offer many new insights. They may also teach us something about the evolution of our own brains, because some of the DNA that evolved in dogs is the same ones that evolved in us.

I think it’s incredible that they’re doing this, and it’s wonderfully humanitarian. There’s definitely some doubt as to the morality of gene manipulation, but if they can make wild animals into human-friendly companions and guardians for children, that’s great! I think gene research should be carefully monitored however, as it is a morally grey area.

How I Stole 14 million from a bank
    http://money.cnn.com/2013/05/15/technology/security/bank-heist/index.htm

This article is about a man who managed to steal 14 million dollars from a bank with relative ease. Since he already had some connection with the bank, he didn't have any problem getting into the accounts, and managed to create an account for himself with 14 million dollars on it. He wasn't actually planning to steal it, though. He just asked the bank to give him his receipt, and when they realized that there was 14 million dollars on it, they didn't let him withdraw the money. He wasn't actually planning to steal it, though. He just asked the bank to give him his receipt, and when they realized that there was 14 million dollars on it, they didn't let him withdraw the money.
I found it shocking that someone can manage to steal money for a bank in this generation, but it is even more shocking to find out that it was 14 million dollars!! Even though he din't take it from someone's account, what is to prevent other people from doing it? I think that banks need to beef up their internet security.

    Children Shun "fat" Alfie 5/13/13
    by: unspecified

Kids are shunning a fictional character named Alfie in a study. By this what is meant is that there were three versions of Alfie all three had the same stories, and clothing the only differences between the three Alfie's were: one was in a wheelchair, one was of average weight, and one was overweight. The one that was overweight was strongly stigmatized as being "bad", and someone they would not like to be friends with. while the one in the wheelchair was received very well.

In my opinion this is a terrible thing, sure we shouldn't encourage obesity but we shouldn't have made it such a large problem in society that children now view being overweight as being evil or cruel. That being overweight as being evil, or creul, is that really the point we have reached where so few things are veiwed as acceptable that some don't even see the point in trying why would anybody want to live in that kind of world?

Hundreds Hurt, Dozens Feared Dead After Fertilizer Plant Explosion

In North Texas, a fertilizer plant exploded, killing at least five and wounding over 150. Although the cause of the explosion is unknown, the federal Chemical Safety Board will research the accident. Many local businesses have been destroyed by the explosion, and several houses have been severely damaged. The casualty number could still rise. Perhaps Pizzas

This is really depressing. There have been so many explosions and tragic events this past week. Although this was an accident, we need to make sure this does not happen again. I feel very sorry for all the families who suffered from this horrible accident.

Richard Swanson had no family at home and no job, but wanted to do something special in his life. One thing he wanted to do was watch the soccer's World Cup during the summer of 2014 in Brazil. So, he decided to walk there, while also dribbling a soccer ball, in order of the World Cup. His journey was suddenly ended when he was killed instantly on Tuesday. He was killed when a pickup truck driving by hit him.

I thought this article was interesting and in a way inspirational. This man, Richard Swanson, wanted to do something in his life that was meaningful and that he would enjoy. He also did it to help others. He did this with having people following his journey have the ability to donate to a foundation called 'One World Futbol Project'. However, this article doesn't totally connect with what we are studying in class.

Stem cells benefit us greatly because they can replace many damaged cells which can help treat diseases and reduce morbidity rates substantially. This is a huge advancement in modern science because of the many ways stem cells can be used to treat diseases and save lives. Stem cells can help burn victims by growing into healthy tissues to replace burned ones and reduce pain, infection and save surrounding tissues.

Bernie Madoff once was a billionaire. Now, he lives in prison and will be there for the rest of his life, or another 100 plus years, whichever comes first. He got arrested because he siphoned over 17 billion dollars. That is a lot of money! Too bad teachers don’t earn that much. To make things worse for him, his son committed suicide two years after he was sent to jail.
This whole article in general was very sad. To once have it all in life, and then you wake up one day and it is all gone would be devastating. Even though the guy committed a huge crime, I still feel sorry for him. I mean, his kid committed suicide. I cannot imagine how bad it would be if my brother committed suicide, and I don’t even like him that much. His brother is also serving a prison sentence.

Internet celebrity sought in Clark man's murder
    http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news%2Flocal%2Fnew_jersey&id=9104988

The suspect is identified as Caleb Lawrence McGillvary or "Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker", a 24-year-old Internet celebrity. He gained fame online for his intervention in a Feb. 1 attack in Fresno, California. He was riding with a man who drove into a utility worker. The Fresno Bee reported that Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker pulled a hatchet from his backpack and struck the driver in the head after he confronted the Pacific Gas & Electric worker. Kai is homeless but considers himself "homefree" and relies on the generosity of strangers for food, lodging and transportation. An autopsy performed the following day determined that Galfy died as a result of "blunt force trauma", according to Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow. Investigators said Kai met the attorney near Times Square, and a surveillance camera captured images of them. The men later went back to the victim's house, officials said.

I think that it is sad to see such a funny and great man go down the path of crime. When he gained his fame as Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker, he seemed like a friendly kind of weird guy, the typical homeless person. But i am surprised that Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker could find it in his heart to kill someone.

    Current Event

I read an article titled North Texas picks up the pieces after tornados kill 6 on CNN.com written by Tom Watkins and Lateef Mungin on May 26, 2013.
Recently, at least 13 tornados touched down in Northern Texas and destroyed the land. Residents say it happened in the blink of an eye, one second they were outside enjoying the sunshine and the next violent winds were ripping their houses apart. Many residents are anxious to return to their houses and collect what is left of their belongings, but it is believed that the area is not safe for civilians yet. It could be another two days or at least seven. Several people are still missing, at least six are dead. Many were injured, some even needing amputations. Civilians of Northern Texas may have lost everything, but they are very grateful that they are still alive.
I think that this event is very tragic, but at the same time an opportunity for the communities in Northern Texas to band together and show their strength. These tornadoes were very powerful, and I think it was incredible that there were so many. (“incredible” in the “awe-inspiring” meaning not “wow!”) I think it is incredibly unfortunate for the families that lost their homes, I do not know what I would do if I lost everything. I have never experienced a tornado, but they seem extremely powerful and scary.
Some questions I had about the article: How long will the rebuilding take? When can life return to normal and function as a normal society? How many are still missing?

The IRS targeted conservative groups. They did this by secretly accessing the journalist’s phone records. This lead to finding out about the misleading statements that were said about the Benghazi terrorist attack. There were headlines during the past week that said that the administration was in a potential scandal. This provided Barack Obama’s “haters” with plenty of excuses to mess up his agenda for the early months of his second term.

This article talks about a volcano in Alaska that is smoking and has ash and lava coming form the top. It has not erupted fully yet, but is already affecting air travel. This volcano, which is over 8,000 feet tall has suspended all air travel over the area, and is "code orange" warning level. The skies are currently cloudy, making it almost impossible to get any information from satellites. Smoke is currently around 60 miles high, with 30-60 mile high clouds. While there are hundreds of flights that fly over Alaska daily, it is relatively small compared to the rest of the world.

I think that we need to improve the equipment that we use to determine when and where these volcanos are going to erupt. While we think of Alaska as not being very full as far as population, if a volcano erupted in a very populated, the results could be devastating. I think that the populated areas near the volcano should be evacuated, just like what should happen for volcanos worldwide. We have a lot of things to learn for volcanos, and maybe we could even find a way to use their power like we do with wind or steam. There are many un-tapped advantages and dangers to volcanos.

In my opinion I think that alligator hunting is crazy. I mean seriously seeking out 800 pound monsters that can easily snap you in half? No thanks. It also disturbs the alligator and their enviroment, the alligator is just tryig to like chill out in it’s swamp then all of a sudden people are throwing stuff at it. Not cool. I come from south Georgia and there are a ton of allligators there and we just kind of leave them to do there thing and vise versa. Well except for this one time when my uncle tried to keep one as a pet, but then he lost it in the house. They found like a month later and it was really shriveled up ao they caught it in a mayonaise jar and released it in some lake. But besides that we leave them alone and they leave us alone. So yeah, mayonaise.

"I Only Have One Thing to Say to Jeff Bliss" by Nicholas Ferroni, published May 14, 2013

Recently, Jeff Bliss, a student at Duncanville High School, became famous overnight when his rant criticizing his world history teacher was posted on YouTube and went viral. This young man is being championed for having the courage to point out what many people feel are the obvious shortcomings of public education and teachers. Some of his speech went like this: "You want kids to come in your class? You want them to get excited? You got to come in here and you got to make him excited for this. You want a kid to change and start doing better? You got to touch his frickin' heart.". This student was immediately featured in video interviews on national television. He didn't suffer any consequences of his actions and the teacher was put on administrative leave, pending investigation.

I think it's great that a student can express his opinion, no matter how critical it may be. In this country our education system could be better and seeing that we can change it ourselves is reassuring. I have had bad teachers before and I felt like doing something like this but never thought it could be ok. Also, I think his world history teacher deserves to be fired since she isn't doing her job and only hands out packets. I think if you are being paid to teach then you should teach.

This article describes the recent attacks of the Syrian Electronic Army, a group of hackers, on various websites. For example, they have targeted the Financial Times and the Onion. The groups goals are decried: they want to attack the media, spread truth, and use others' social media accounts to publish fake news. The second and third goals are, of course, incompatible. The groups sent emails to employees that contained links to fabricated news stories. When they clicked on the link, they were asked to log on to a "Google" or "Microsoft" email site before viewing the article. Employees who fell for the trap had their online identities stolen and used to cause trouble.
I think that the reason that the Syrian Electronic Army's goals seem contradictory is that they are not a particularly organized group. They remind me of another hacking group called Anonymous, which has no meetings or formal goals. The members of the group simply do what they choose. The use of a fake login website reminds me of something that happened to one of my mom's friends. An email directed her to the login page for her bank and asked her to type in her password. Fortunately, she didn't fall for it. People need to be on the lookout for tricks like that. I hope that people are aware of them and think before entering their information.

The current Powerball winnings are $600 million, cash value of $376.9 million. This is the second highest jackpot amount in the history of the United States. Although it is more likely you are to be hit by lightening, get two hole in ones in a row, hit a deer in Hawaii, drown at a beach, or dying from a bee sting. Powerball is played in 43 states, the Distric of Columbia, and The U.S. Virgin Islands. The chances of winning are 1 in 175,223,510 and the tickets cost $2. You are highly unlikely to ever win the lottery, and these winnings might continue to be untouched.

I think that buying lottery tickets would just be infuriating. If I set my mind to something I have to achieve that goal. Setting my mind on winning the lottery would make me furious. I know most people who play do it for fun, just the slight chance that their lives could change, but why waste your money? Powerball is $2 for each ticket, how much money are you going to spend a year on the almost impossible chance of winning the lottery? I would save my money, lottery tickets are too expensive for what you get back… nothing.

Just last week a woman was tricked by her boyfriend John Andrew Welder into taking abortion pills and killing the woman’s fetus. The 28 year old man told his girlfriend Remee Lee that she had a bacterial infection. His dad was a doctor and therefore the girlfriend believed that John was telling the truth and took the pills. She never planned on aborting even though she was not intending on having kids. She told CNN that in fact she was excited to be started a family, but her boyfriend was not. John is convicted for murder and could face the rest of his life in prison.
First of all, who is stupid enough to take any pills that are supposed to be prescribed without first talking to a doctor! I know that he was her boyfriend and she might have trusted him, but when dealing with something like medicine, (especially if she didn’t know the pill she was taking) you should always double check. The couple wasn’t even married and Remee knew that her boyfriend wanted her to get an abortion. Overall though I think it is terrible that someone would trick their partner or girlfriend or wife or anyone into getting an abortion (taking a child’s life away) if they didn’t want one.

“First on CNN: Gun battle in states heats up as NRA steps in to recall CO state president”

    http://thelead.blogs.cnn.com/2013/05/17/first-on-cnn-gun-battle-in-states-heats-up-as-nra-steps-in-to-recall-co-state-senate-president/?hpt=hp_t2

Instead of tackling the gun restrictions issue with the U.S. Senate, the NRA has decided to petition for the recall election of Colorado’s State Senate President, John Morse. Why? The reason is simple: He passed laws for Colorado on background checks for everyone and for all firearms sales and on banning ammunition sales for guns having greater than fifteen rounds. The NRA has been sending out mailers asking supporters to help bring about the recall election, which they have successfully done in the past with Walker and the governor of California, Gray Davis. If their endeavor is successful, it is thought that it will cause NRA supporters in other states to recall gun restriction setting political figures.

My opinion of the article is that it is written well, with a few phrases I did not already know. It was well laid out with quotes from reliable sources and a good depth of information that did not seem particularly biased. From my own standing point on how gun restrictions are not bad because then people don’t have easy power to murder others, how gun background checks are a lovely idea because why would people want recorded criminals to have guns if they have been known to shoot someone in the past, and how the Constitution has been amended before so why is it not allowed to be amended again, I think that this whole event is silly. If the people of Colorado, who most likely knew that the person they were voting into office was in support of gun restrictions, had voted him into his position originally, why would they change their opinion now? If NRA supporters had not been able to get someone else in as State Senator President the first time, what difference is there now? As it relates to class, there are two things: 1) Stalin used armed forces with no restrictions to mass murder innocents, 2) Hitler built up the German army, going against the Versailles treaty, and therefore he built up gun supply so that he too was able to murder many innocents. For anyone who does not take my point of view, what do you think about this article? For those who take my view, what do you think about this article?

The article that I chose dealt with the ongoing conflict in Syria. The civil war, which has continued for several years, has caused widespread violence throughout the Middle Eastern country. The article mentioned US efforts to negotiate peace with both sides. Russia has also been involved, and Mr. Obama has recently met with the Turkish prime minister. The fighting has left a possibility of divisions within the Syrian state within the near future.
I think that Mr. Assad, Syria’s current leader, should step down from his power. His rule has been the source for many deaths, violence, and chaos in Syria. I agree with the efforts worldwide to negotiate peace terms rather than getting involved with the fighting. America does not need to enter another war; the last two have already crippled this nation’s economy. Hopefully the Syrian nation will not break apart, and that this war-ravaged nation can soon find peace.

“Rhode Island, Delaware and Minnesota Legalize Same-Sex Marriage
    May 2013 Current Events: U.S. News | Infoplease.com http://www.infoplease.com/news/2013/current-events/us_may.html#ixzz2TajFHFdP

    1) This current event is about the same sex marriage issue. In this article, several states have legalized same-sex marriage. The states include Rhode Island, Delaware, and Minnesota. The law will go into effect on August 1, 2013. Many states have not yet legalized same-sex marriage, but it is a big step for 3 states to legalize it all at once.
    2) I think it is really cool that some states have taken the leap and begun to support the same-sex marriage. For me, I completely support same-sex marriage and I hope that it is just a matter of time till North Carolinians begin to realize that same-sex marriage is something that people should embrace. I don’t really have any personal connections specifically, except we do have a family friend gay couple. They live in New York right now, but they got married before in a different country, before it was legalized in New York. There is also no real connection to what we are learning right now in World History, maybe except showing how reform can sometimes not happen because of some conservatives who have traditional values. My question is why some people don’t support gay marriage? Why hate people just because it was they way they were born?

Birds' "Crouching" Gait Born in Dinosaur Ancestors
    http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2013/13/130424-dinosaurs-birds-flight-paleontology-evolution-science/
    April 24, 2013
Summary: For years scientists believed the hypothesis that the tail (length and mass) of a dinosaur had the greatest effect on the posture of said dinosaur. After gathering data using projections of the dinosaurs, researchers have found that the posture of a dinosaur correlates more with the forelimbs than the tail. The more mass the organism’s forelimbs have, the more it’s center of gravity changes. This change causes the animal to adopt a crouched position to maintain balance. This study focuses on bird-like dinosaurs because of the evolutionary changes birds see in their forelimbs. Overtime, they have developed more muscle to hold their crouched position which aids in flight.
Response: I have had a certain affection for dinosaurs ever since I could play with toys. This article caught my attention with it’s very colorful and creative pictures of a variety of dinosaurs. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it because it played off of the evolutionary topics that we learned in class earlier this year. Not only does it contain vocabulary relating to evolution but it also displays the concepts. One question that I am left with after reading this article is: Do guys who have huge arms naturally crouch over when they walk?

Title: The secret behind the alligator's toothy smile
    Author: Meghan Rosen

    URL: http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/350382/description/News_in_Brief_The_secret_behind_the_alligators_toothy_smile

Scientists from the University of Southern California led by Cheng-Ming Chuong have discovered that alligators have a band of stem cells underneath their teeth that allows the organisms to grow new teeth. They found that many chemicals control the growing of new teeth, so each of the alligator’s 80 teeth can be replaced many times, typically about once a year. It was also shown that alligator teeth consist of part of the old tooth, the budding new tooth, and part of the band of stem cells. Since people also have remains of stem cell-packed teeth, scientists may be able to use them to help people grow new teeth in the future.

I thought that this was a very interesting article. It shows how research of various organisms can help us discover more about our own human race. To think that as different an organism from us as an alligator could actually help us improve ourselves (or at least solve some of our dental problems) is a somewhat mind-blowing notion. Plus, this was an interesting article to me since I really enjoy biology and my parents are dentists. One question I have from the article is has there been any new research or plans for new research on finding a way for humans to grow new teeth with the help of stem cells after the discovery of how alligators can grow more teeth?

Jay Carney, a White House spokesman, said that controversies have a small connection to the second term goals of Barack Obama.

This article was about President Obama having a rough start to his second term serving as the President of the United States. It is about the leak that happened. Also, it is about the misleading details about the Benghazi terrorist attack. In the article it states that Obama isn’t the only president who has had a rocky beginning to a second term as president. This article shows how Obama is doing with his continuation of being the President. Also, he is not the only one that has had this happen to him. It is significant because it gives the public the idea of how his start for the second term and the messing up of his beginning second term schedule is affecting him.
I thought that this article was interesting because I don’t really keep up with all the politics and things since it is just more I have to remember. More than 1.5 million refugees have flooded out of Syria to neighboring Jordan and Lebanon. This is only the recorded refugees. Many more have not been documented, so the total number is probably much higher. UHNCR says that 4.25 million may be displaced inside the country. They also say that they are running out of funds and resources to take care of the refugees' needs. The US media has reported that Russia had sent sophisticated anti-ship missiles to Syria. Russia is one of Syria's few remaining allies. This shipment of weapons is worrying, as it could mean newer, more sophisticated attacks that will be harder to defend.
This news is awful. I know THAT sounds cheesy, but if you think about the scale of humanity displaced. . . There are probably about 2,000 people at CHHS. Think about the population of CHHS times about 750. That many people are currently driven from their homes because of war. And, about three times that amount are currently displaced within their countries. The news about Russia sending weapons is also worrying. What does Russia gain from an alliance with Syria.

In the Southeast there is a new type of ant termed crazy ants. They are omnivores. They are an invasive species from Brazil. They will kill all other colonies of ants, or starve them out. People actually like the indigenous fire ants more than the new ones. Although they can not bite, they will infest a house, causing distress.
I think invasive species should be controlled somehow, maybe there should be heavier travel restrictions.

About 20 insurgents were killed in Nigeria on Friday. These insurgents were bombed at what was thought to be militant Islamist camps. This was part of what was said to be a “massive deployment” of forces to eliminate insurgent groups. The president of Nigeria had noticed an increase of insurgent violence recently. Boko Haram is the one that has been blamed for most of the violence that has happened over recent years. The group led by Boko Haram is estimated to have killed 2,800 people. The U.N. human rights office is telling Nigeria's government to respect human rights principles during security sweeps that they are planning to do, following reports of heavy casualties in some parts of Nigeria.

Although it is sad that 20 people were killed, these insurgents do need to be eliminated. These insurgent groups are causing trouble in Nigeria and this trouble is bad for Nigeria’s title of being the economic and political powerhouse of West Africa. These insurgent groups have also killed many others already, so these groups definitely need to disappear. However, I am not quite sure if killing them is the best solution to getting rid of these groups. I do know that either way whether these insurgent groups are killed or put in jail, it is going to be very hard to get rid of all of them.

Russia's security services have arrested a CIA agent, Ryan Fogle, a third secretary at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. He was allegedly trying to recruit a Russian secret service agent to work for the U.S. and was wearing a blond wig. According to Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), he was carrying special technical equipment, disguises, written instructions and a large sum of money when he was detained late Monday. He did this while wearing one really poor-fitting wig under a baseball cap and (for some unknown reason) while carrying another bad wig in his bag. He was also carrying a compass. After being arrested and processed by Russian security services, he was handed back to the U.S. diplomatic mission in Moscow and ordered to leave Russia immediately. He cannot be arrested because of his diplomatic immunity. It was the first case of an American diplomat publicly accused of spying in about a decade and has further strained relations between Russia and the U.S.A.

The timing of this incident is being speculated upon, with many thinking that Putin wants to deflect the blame being placed on him for not giving details on the Boston bomber’s visit to Russia for six months, just before the bombing. Surely, no actual CIA spy could be this incompetent, right? Even if he was, surely Russia would not have released him without taking further action against him. I believe there is a political purpose behind the detention and the evidence they have against him is bizarre. Russia and the United States have been at odds lately over Syria, the adoption of Russian children and U.S. sanctions against Russian officials accused of human rights abuses. I believe that this Russia’s way of retaliation against the U.S.A. for real and perceived grievances.

Stem cells can help burn victims by growing into healthy tissues to replace burned ones and reduce pain, infection and save surrounding tissues.

The politician dove for cover, and the kangaroo jumped on his legs and hopped away, leaving deep cuts in his leg. He seems relatively unaffected, despite being poked fun at at his daily meetings.
This is quite interesting, such a casual meeting with a kangaroo; but that’s just because I live in such a different environment. Australia has 50 million kangaroos, so running into them not everyday would be unusual, especially in this politician’s case, who spots a kangaroo almost every day on his jogs. I’d love to see a kangaroo in its natural habitat, hopefully walking away with no injuries.

Akein Scott was identified by the Louisiana police as one of the primary suspect for a shooting in New Orleans. The shooting occurred at New Orleans Mother's day parade this Sunday. This resulted in injuring at least 19 people, three of which are in critical condition. What happened was that someone just ran through the crowd during the parade and started shooting. This is the third time there has been gun violence during holiday celebrations in New Orleans this year. The suspect was identified when police reviewed surveillance tape, but as of now, the suspect hasn't been caught.

What I’m wondering is if this person is actually the one who did it, or are the police following up on leads of other possible suspects.

Just recently, in southwest Connecticut, two trains collided, resulting in multiple injuries and a large amount of damage to the trains themselves. One of the trains, heading to New York, derailed and hit the other one as a result. The mayor of Bridgeport, the town where it took place, reports that there seems to have been no deaths, only injuries. This is backed up by the spokesman for a nearby hospital. It seems the the cost of the accident will be quite high, as the rails affected are completely "shot," as the mayor says. For this reason, the railway will have to be temporarily shut down, possible for several weeks.
I think the accident that took place in Connecticut was absolutely terrible. It's one of those things that you think about, with a bit of fear, but remind yourself that something like that could never happen. Fortunately, it seems that no one was killed in the accident. It's pretty amazing that no one was, though two people are in critical condition.

On March 17, a moderate sized meteor crashed onto Earth’s moon, creating a bright explosion on the surface. The NASA Meteroid Environment Office has recorded around three hundred impacts, but none with the brightness of a four magnitude star. The scientists hope to locate the region of impact on the moon; collaborating the images of the telescope on Earth, and from a satellite orbiting the moon. An unnaturally large amount of meteors in Earth’s atmosphere were also seen during the same night, but are not caused by a meteor shower. Telescope users were encouraged to observe the moon for lunar impacts and flashes.
The original meteor was measured to be .4 meters wide, and eighty-eight pounds. Scientists believed that the Earth and Moon were passing through an area of space debris; causing the numerous meteor impacts. I have never observed a space phenomenon before, so reading about space through various literary forms seems very exciting. However, I used to go stargazing during the night; hoping to see meteor showers, or other space phenomena occur. Observing objects in space has been a part of human society ever since the beginning, when astrology and astronomy were exchangeable, to the more modern ideals developed during the Scientific Revolution. Meteors were said to be bad luck, although this superstition was replaced with scientific thought, till this day of space observations conducted using advanced technology. Would the impact on the moon affect Earth in any which way or form? Or is it merely a natural phenomenon?

A train heading from New Haven to New York City derailed around 6:10 p.m., hitting the other train in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Metro-North spokeswoman Marjorie Anders said.Power was shut off along the line and service has been halted -- westbound past Bridgeport, which is about 60 miles northeast of New York City on the Long Island Sound, and eastbound beyond South Norwalk -- because of the derailment.

Gun control has been a problem all across the nation, but many leaders are trying to make a difference on a local level. The Colorado state senate president, John Morse, has passed a law that requires background checks on all buyers and also a ban on bigger firearms. He has been the target of many gun groups, as well as the NRA. Many of these groups are trying to get enough people to sign a petition for a recall election. There have been many tragic gun incidents, there were ones in Colorado too, so John Morse created this laws.
I think it's good that this senator is trying to use his power in a good way. He is trying to restrict gun usage because there have been so many incidents with school shootings and killings of innocent people. Many of them were so young, and the only way to make a difference is to take action. We can't just sit and wait to mourn over the next incident that will happen, we need to prevent it from happening in the first place. I hope the laws in Colorado stay because this at least shows progress is being made.

A paramedic that responded to the fire has been arrested for having pipe bomb materials in his home. However, police have ruled out weather, natural causes, anhydrous ammonium and ammonium nitrate in a rail car.
I think it is important that investigators find out who or what caused this explosion. Many people were injured and killed. Those lucky enough to survive may have had their houses destroyed. If the fire was intentional, the perpetrator should have to face what he or she has done.

Passengers bloodied after trains derail, collide in southwest Connecticut
By Greg Botelho and Rob Frehse

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/17/us/connecticut-train-derails/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

Two passenger trains of Metro-North heading in opposite directions collided on Friday, during rush hour, in southwestern Connecticut, damaging both trains and leaving many injured and some critically injured. A train heading from New Haven to New York City was derailed, hitting the other train in Bridgeport, Connecticut, causing the cars behind of it to crash as well. Two of twenty-six people are critically injured at Bridgeport hospital. Power was shut off and the service has been halted. A witness of the incident stated that it was a horrific scene; there was blood all over the cars.
I think that this incident is terrible. Many people were injured, some with critical injuries. Anyone who had to go through this would have a hard time forgetting this. I think that the security of trains have to be analyzed and studied carefully because of this incident. I hope that incidents like these, causing injuries, do not occur again and that our world will be a safer place.

In 2005,a man named George Smith was on a honeymoon with his wife Carly. They were on a cruise with the Royal Caribbean. Smith was put overboard at some point during the cruise and drowned. All that was left of him was a bloody handprint on the side of the ship where he was probably holding on for his life. The Royal Caribbean was sued by George’s wife. George’s family believed it was murder, but had no way to prove it was, and who did it. Recently, a video surfaced from the cruise showing three Russian-American passengers on the same ship laughing about his death, while showing gang signs. These passengers had earlier been gambling with George in the ships casino. The FBI is going to review this case with the new evidence and hopefully set things right.
This is a tough case. Especially since it’s been eight years since he has died. I don’t think that they have enough evidence to accuse the suspects of the murder. I think its very probable that they did kill him, but since the evidence is just two men doing gang signs, they can't be sure. I also believe that Carly should be a suspect too, just to cover all the bases.

‘Crazy ants’ a threat in southern U.S.
by Brad Lendon On Friday, May 17, 2013
    http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/17/us/crazy-ants/index.html?hpt=hp_t3

There is an invasive wave of ants from South America called Tawny Crazy Ants. They are omnivores that will either eat or starve out all of their prey and will wipe out everything in it’s way. They think that the ants coming to the north will wipe out the current red ants which are killing off the others around them that cannot live with the red ant. The crazy ants will become a pain due to the fact that there are so many of them and they prefer to nest in places like walls.
Personally I would like to not have any of these ants in the first place. My mom is very allergic to red ants and the hurt a lot when you are bitten by them. Even though I dislike the red ant, I have a feeling that the crazy ants will become a very big problem that is worse then the red ants.
My main question is what will happen with the ants? It is most likely that we will have to wait for the ants to actually finish migrating to see the outcome.

I mean its a funny article, but its already 11:51 so I've just got to type this thing. Oh wait, now 11:52 11:52 damn I'm slow. So whatever, the article is a satire of President Obama, its really not that hard to figure out. Whats more important is that I'm sitting here writing a current even. Really though, its a Friday night, what am I doing with my life? So Im watching Community and its relatively funny, its really just to distract my from the depression and boredom that comes with watching Community. How ironic. Ok 11:54 almost there. So anyways Corey, hows it going? I feel like I have some stuff missing but I happened to misplace my last "I care about this" a couple days ago. So that stuff probably wont get turned in. Whatever, I'll just bring you a pet giraffe and we'll be all good. Ok, well I have some non-existent friends to meet and some actual cocaine to do so Over and Out Corey.

Dozens injured in head-on train crash
    http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-22578931

At least 60 people were injured in a train crash recently. The crash occurred in Connecticut. It happened near New York City between two commuter trains. This is a very big deal because people want to be safe and secure when they ride the train, and this was a flaw in the system.

I feel very bad for those who were harmed. I also feel very bad for all who were involved. At least five were injured critically, and I'm sure that this was a traumatizing experience for everyone involved. I hope that people investigate ways to make the trains safer.

Why you don’t want to drink the pool water
    Kim Painter

A Tornado’s Mad Dash, and Then Ruins / John Schwartz, New York Times / May 16, 2013
    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/17/us/north-texas-tornado.html

Ten tornadoes hit North Texas overnight between May 15 and 16, killing at least six people and affecting 97 of the 110 houses in Granbury, Texas. The wind speed was estimated as 166 to 200 miles per hour, destroying and severely damaging the houses--many of which had been built by Habitat for Humanity years before. Granbury has only about 8,000 residents, but it is located 35 miles southwest of the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

I found this article alarming because of the detrimental effects that it had to this community. I also thought of my friends who live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and what would have happened if the tornado had hit that area instead. An early warning system is credited with saving many lives in this instance, but ultimately some of these people still lost their homes and friends or family members.

Police Name Suspect in New Orleans Parade Shooting
By Jason Morris and Catherine Shoichet 5/14/13
    http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/13/justice/louisiana-shooting/index.html?hpt=us_c2

On Mother's Day, in New Orleans, a man came to the annual parade and opened fire. At least 19 were wounded in the shooting. They had no leads on who the man could have been until just recently. In a post on its Facebook page, the police department identified the man taken into custody as Akein Scott, 19. The police still don't know why someone would do such a thing and no more info has been released.

I think it's really good that they caught the suspect. People who do things like this and the Boston shooting piss me off. The one thing I can't deal with, though, is people using the #ParyForBoston or #PrayForNewOrleans hash tag. My sister said that people were just doing it for attention. I really hope that the suspect will be convicted and info will be released on his trial. I want to know, is this guy the shooter or is he innocent?

    North Korea launches short-range missiles

A few days ago, North Korea launched 3 short range missiles into the ocean. This was monitored by South Korea, as tensions are escalating between the two countries. It was directed away from South Korea, but tensions have only grown from this incident. Apparently, North Korea has missiles with a range of up to 3500 kilometers.

I think that this could get messy if the two countries' relationship gets worse. Also, the long range missiles are also slightly disturbing. I guess we are safe here in NC, but other places are in danger. I had one question and that was what Korea plans to do with the missiles. Is it self defense or are they planning an attack on another country?

A teacher was put on leave last week as a student ranted about her packet teaching. The teacher did not teach the kids and just gave them packets every day, which student Jeff Bliss thought was not an efficient way of teaching. The teacher was sent on leave. While the student was ranting another classmate filmed the whole thing and the video went viral. The student says, "You have to be up here and touch the students hearts".

Brazilian Court Council Removes a Barrier to Same-Sex Marriage
    By Simon Romero

    5/14/13

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/15/world/americas/brazilian-court-council-removes-a-barrier-to-same-sex-marriage.html?ref=world&_r=1&

This Tuesday, the court overseeing Brazil’s judiciary court ruled that notary publics cannot refuse to wed same-sex couples. This is the third South American country to pass such legislation, after Argentina and Uruguay. Before this, same-sex couples were allowed to have civil unions, but now that they are allowed the same rights as heterosexual couples. This makes processes such as adopting a child and taking one another’s names much easier for same-sex couples. However, there is still some opposition from evangelical Christian politicians.

I think that this article is great because it talks about what is, to me, a very happy event. I think that same-sex marriages should be allowed everywhere just as “traditional” marriages are, and while I think that that will eventually be the case, it is really nice to know that this is actually happening in more progressive places in the world than America. This doesn’t really relate to anything that we’re studying in class. One thing I’m wondering is when America will do the same. I think it’s inevitable that gay marriage will be legal, but I’m just wondering when this will eventually happen.

However, Rachael is not angry with her birth mom for what she did, she wants to find her and tell her that she is forgiven.

This story is amazing. I will never understand how someone could literally throw away an innocent child. I think that this young woman is incredibly strong and her story was very inspiring.

I think that we need to improve the equipment that we use to determine when and where these volcanoes are going to erupt. While we think of Alaska as not being very full as far as population, if a volcano erupted in a very populated, the results could be devastating. I think that the populated areas near the volcano should be evacuated, just like what should happen for volcanoes worldwide. We have a lot of things to learn for volcanoes, and maybe we could even find a way to use their power like we do with wind or steam. There are many un-tapped advantages and dangers to volcanoes.
