Current Event #20: U.S. Soldier Places America In Harm's Way
Taliban insurgents have vowed revenge against "sick-minded American savages" after a US soldier killed 16 villagers
Due: Friday, March 16th, 2012

Recent reports have indicated that a United States soldier stationed in Afghanistan went on a house to house shooting rampage in two villages, killing 16 people. According to a report issued by CNN: the Afghan Taliban said that its fighters would exact revenge for 16 people left dead. The Taliban has described the U.S. forces as "sick minded American savages," and said in a statement on its website that it would mete out punishment for the "barbaric actions." The Taliban, an Islamic fundamentalist movement, has battled the U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan for a decade. U.S. officials have expressed shock and sadness over the attack, while Afghan leaders have angrily condemned it. President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan called it an "unforgivable" crime, noting that nine of the dead were children. The killings have fueled fears of intensified ire directed at international forces in the country following deadly riots over the burning of Qurans by U.S. troops late last month. The soldier, an army staff sergeant, acted alone and turned himself in after opening fire on civilians, according to officials from NATO's International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF. He is now in U.S. custody as investigators try to establish what motivated him".

I think that America should make precautionary measures to prepare to go to war with Afghanistan over the recent actions of U.S. soldier. This just makes since just to be prepared for anything. We don’t know what “The Taliban” is thinking but we just need to be prepared for the worst but hope that they won’t want to go to war with us.

I think the solider should be taken home immediately because with him just making this decision is really harming America. I think it is a physiological thing that is making them do this. This shooting rampage could really continually hurt America in the future.

I think that by pulling the troops out could be a good thing and a bad thing. American and allied combat troops are scheduled to leave Afghanistan by 2014 I think this could happen if there are not anymore incidents, but as nice as it would be to bring them home that might not be the best decision for America to make.

The U.S should take precautionary measures. Better to be prepared than waiting for death. The U.S made a bad impression on Afghanistan and there is no definite way that we will know how they will take the recent accidents.

I think it would be best if Afghans officials played a role in delivering the soldier’s punishments. They have the right to influence the U.S’s decision. Until they can determine his motivation behind his actions, his punishment may be less severe. I imagine a heavy fine and a long stay in prison will be suitable.

If the troops stayed, it can be taken as a sign of aggression and provoke an attack from Afghanistan. If they were to be removed, it may appear to be an act of cowardice. It would be safer to remove the troops and augment them into the main bulk of the military forces for better defense and manpower.

The best precautionary measure that could be taken would probably be to not involve ourselves in cultures and societies we have no experience or vested interest in. Unfortunately that being impossible, the best thing to do would be to make sure the soldiers understand the culture and don't get in anyone's way, and it would be great if they also would resist their urge to burn the native people's sacred texts.
The soldier needs to be held as commiting homicide and as for the others, a dishonorable discharge could be in order. The US could be a benevolent force for good in the east if the people charged with imposing that force were actually, you know, not mass murderers.
If possible, immediately. It's still funny to see all the politicians, Gingrich especially, say that they "always had doubts about the war" when he had criticized Obama repeatedly for not wanting to continue in afghanistan.

  5. The best action the United States of America should take is precautionary measures because with the unpredictability of this situation, you never know what will happen. Since the soldier did make a terrible mistake, we do not know for sure how the Afghani government will react.
The soldier did a terrible deed and should be treated as any other person. He committed homocide, when in any case is unacceptable. He should be discharged from the army as well as out in prision. The army is supposed to disarm the person only, not kill them.
We should continue pulling out troops from Afghanistan. This is very minor and should not hinder the soldiers from coming home. We just have to be more careful.

I believe that the USA should take some minor precautionary measures. Afghanistan will not take the shooting lightly, and will probably try to find a way to get back at the US. I think that we should try to do something small in apology to that village. The next president should try their best to remove the soldiers from Afghanistan. It will take the soldiers out of danger, and I think the US has spent enough time there. War is also a major life changer for everyone involved. In this soldier's case, he just snapped, and committed severe homicide. Obama did a good job of removing soldiers from Iraq and finally ending that war, but there is still one more war, and it should be ended as soon as possible.

I think that the soldier should be mentally inspected, and if he is unstable, treatment should be given to him. If he is not unstable, they should place him in jail for a while. I am not a fan of the death penalty, so I believe that if he mentally stable, he should be placed in jail for life. The soldier's actions, though tragic, should be used as a lesson for other soldiers. I want to know if his peers noticed anything different from his actions prior to this incident.

I believe that it would not seem right to pull the US soldiers out immediately, or else it should have been done long ago. They should continue to aid the country of Afghanistan, but I think they should be escorted out as soon as possible. If things get completely out of hand however, escorting them all out immediately should be considered.

I think America should take precautions for war. Even if the nation didn’t mean for it to happen, Americans have killed the Afghan people and was extremely rude about their religion. This is a very serious situation, and America needs to be prepared for anything. After 9/11, America was extremely hostile towards other nations, and Afghanistan has every right to be hostile to us. One of our soldiers went on a killing spree, even killing nine children, and Afghans no longer feel safe around American soldiers. Murder is very serious, and it can’t be dismissed easily. People said they would get revenge, and it would be best to be prepared for that revenge.

I think the soldier should be handed over to the Afghanistan government. We are already in hot water with Afghanistan, and denying them their right to punish the soldier could cause a war. It was very irresponsible for the soldier to go on a killing spree, mental illness or not. It was done on Afghanistan soil, and should be handled by their government. People need to understand that actions have consequences, and America cannot protect you from doing such inhuman things. It would be safer for everyone if we handed the soldier over for punishment. Aren’t we supposed to trust them to handle this correctly after we have helped them fix their government?

America needs to pull out of Afghanistan as soon as possible. We are not very welcomed there right now, and overstaying our welcome could be very bad for us. Something like this CANNOT be allowed to happen again, and American needs to take precautions to make sure it doesn’t. By pulling out, we can show our trust in Afghanistan and hopefully repair our relationship a little. It will take a long time for Afghans to fully trust us, but we can make a start by pulling out.

I believe that the United States should take some precautionary actions. I think the U.S. shouldn't just look at what is happening overseas but also at home. There should be better securities in airports and there are also people who support the Taliban in many countries including the U.S. I think all the troops should come back but if there is going to be a war it's a little different. Would you rather have battles raging in the U.S. or on another country? I would say neither but it has to be either one. War is meant to be fought between country so even if we brought all the troops home and if there is a war then they'll just have to be redeployed again.

I think the suspect should be prosecuted first and we should all find out the truth and why he did what he did. After that what I reall ythink should happen is that he should be turned over to the Afghanistan government . That might be a little harsh but he commited a crime in another country so I think the people of that country should decide what will happen to him. He'll likely be tortured and then killed if we do turn him over.

I really think all the soldiers should come back but like I said it's likely they'll be redeployed to Afghanistan again in the event of war. If the U.S. knows for sure that there is going to be a huge scale war that will occur in the future, then I don't think they U.S. should lose the position that we have in Afghanistan right now. Nobody wants the battles to occur in their own country that is for sure unless they hate their country or something. Afghanistan has also been in a warring state for a long time too so let's all hope that there won't be a war that anybody will have to fight.

I think that the United States should take any type of threat seriously. I think we should begin to take pre-cauntionary measures. If we don't, it could lead to another 9/11 event, but if we do it wouldn't hurt to be prepared. The only thing that worries me is that the Afghanistan Taliban will take it as a threat to get into another war with them.

In my opinion, the suspect should have serious concequences for his actions. Because of his actions, our whole nation has to take pre-cautionary measures and be fearful. There is no excuse for what the suspect dead and should be punished. I think he the Afghanistan government should handle him for his actions instead of just keeping him in prison in America. If it does turn out that he has a mental dissorder, than prison would be the best fit.

I think that Obama is doing the best he can to safely pull our troops out. I think that our country should make peace with the Taliban, and then pull our troops out. I feel like officials really need to think of a plan, because we can't stay there forever. If we do pull out of the war, I think that would show a good sign to the Taliban that we don't want to fight anymore, or cause harm to there land.

I think that without a doubt, the US should be extremely careful when it comes to dealing with the war with Afghanistan, or any war in general. We have already created many conflicts with the Afghan government and people; also, Afghan people are naturally easily angered in the first place. All in all, we should make sure that every small step we take is the right one. Otherwise, it would cause boatloads of trouble. As for punishments, it depends of whether or not the solider was sane when he did these evil acts. If he knew what he was actually doing, which I highly doubt he did, he should be punished severely. If he completely cracked and went crazy, he should be taken into a mental institution for treatment. Either way, this man should not be allowed to fight in Afghanistan or anywhere. Lastly, I don’ think we should immediately withdraw all our troops from Afghanistan. It would be wasting all the time, money, and effort that the United States has spent on Afghanistan.

I believe that the U.S should take precautionary measures. It is better to be well prepared then to not be prepared at all. We do not know what there army is thinking about doing. They could just attack at any given time. Being that one of our solders got loose and decided to do an unknown crazy attack being prepared for them would be in our best interest. They are not going to take this shooting light.

I think I could agree with others by saying that the solider should be escorted home immediately. He put the whole U.S in danger by doing what he did. Before they do anything to him they need to find out his reasoning behind all of this. Not that it would still be ok I bet many people are wondering why he would do such a thing. If they don’t want to send him home then it should be a very expensive fine against him.

I think pulling the troops out could be good and bad. Letting them stay could be a sign for us. That might mean that they are planning intense aggression against us. Pulling the troops out it should be immediately considered. As many people can see we are not very welcomed there right now so we should get out as soon as possible. We could be putting many of our troops in danger by continuing to let them stay in a country that doesn’t want us to be there!

Semper Paratus. The USCG adopted this Latin term as a national slogan for the branch of the military. It means "always ready" As should the U.S should be. Especially with rising tensions the United States should always be ready for a war with any country.

I believe that the punishment for this homicidal soldier should be that he is turned back over the Afganistanian forces and receive whatever punichment they see fit. If an Afgan soldier where to the same thing with to us in America, without a doubt, his punishment would be the death penalty.

Because of rising tensins I think that we should pull our troops out of the nation but still hold some type of supervision over the country. I doubt that in my lifetime we will ever pronounce peace with the taliban, but as a start we should stop breathing down their necks.

It is definitely important for the United States to at least be aware of possible war with Afghanistan. I think that Afghanistan has taken a major blow from the actions of the soldier. If a soldier from another country was in America and killed any amount of people, even just a few, we would be angry with the soldier and we would most likely put part of the blame on the country where he came from. So we need to prepare for war but we should not start it because most Americans don't want another war. We should prepare but try to avoid it as much as we can. There is also a bigger risk of war because of the previous incidents from the other soldiers.

I think that this soldier should go to prison for a very long time. Already the penalty for murdering someone in America is very high, but if you kill sixteen people, then the soldier needs to punished much more. Also the soldier killed innocent people from a different country, and made it so that his entire country will have to face the consequences along with him so he will have to be in prison for a very long time to pay back for his crimes.

I think that most Americans want the troops to be pulled out of Afghanistan, but so far it has not been very simple. I think that the government should try very hard to get the troops out so that we can strengthen our relationship with afghanistan instead of constantly being afraid of war and attacks.

I think that it is a good idea for the U.S. to take precautionary measures. Like the saying goes, it’s better to be safe than sorry. I think the soldier definitely put the U.S. at risk, and you never know what could happen. The U.S. should be prepared for anything that will happen during the duration of their time in Afghanistan.
I think this soldier should be treated like any other person that has committed homicide. He should definitely be discharged from the U.S. army, and could even be sent to jail for a crime like this. Another option is to hand this soldier to the Afghanistan government. I think this could be an option because we are already in a bad relationship with Afghanistan. We should do our best to get them on our good side so that war does not start.
It would be a great idea to pull all the U.S. troops out of Afghanistan as soon as possible. Again, our relationship with Afghanistan is not the prettiest. Even the littlest situation there can cause a war, which nobody would want. America does not need to be in Afghanistan at all times to help the country. Right now, we need to gain their trust and help them out as much as possible, and try our best to not cause any more problems with them.

I think that Afghanistan has been extremely offended by this act of violence. The actions of the US soldier has lost America's credibility. I'm not sure if Afghanistan will/can even do anything about it to America, but that's really not the point here. The fact that some foreign country invades your country, their soldiers come in and kill your innocent civilians, it will get attention and other nations will look down on this and will take a completely different view of you. I'm also curious why America didn't realize this guy is some type of maniac redneck who probably only joined the army to shoot some of damned terrorists and when he couldn't he got mad.

I think this soldier should either be sentenced to jail for the rest of his life (possibly be even executed), or they should hand this hillbilly over to the Afghan government. Since this crime happened in their country, and he was one of our soldiers both countries should talk about it and decide who gets custody of him and who decides his punishment.

I think now is a better time than any to pull out US troops from Afghanistan. After all, why help a country who doesn't want our help? we were never on good terms with their government, and now an event like this occurs. I'm sure the people of Afghanistan and the government won't tolerate US soldiers being in their homeland anymore. But it's really America's choice, since even if US soldiers aren't welcome there's not much the Afghan government can do about it.

I think that the us should always be prepared. Taking precautionary measures against a war are exactly what that means. Of course the best course of action would have been not to become wrapped up in the wars of other places but that is now impossible. Maybe the killing of natives and the burning of sacred texts should have been avoided in the first place?

now that we have become entangled in this i would think a dishonorable discharge would be the correct thing to do, if not some more severe punishments. This has done naught but exacerbate the already inflamed situation. So, surly some punishment is due, but will it be meted out?

I think that the U.S. should ween the middle east off of our support becuase we are achieving nothing while they leech away our resources. this war has ruined the country. thousands of youg peoples lives have been lost while nothing has been gained.

I feel that the USA should take blame for this. Afghanistan will not take the shooting very well, They probably are not going to just "brush it off." They are most likely going to try to pull something on the US. The man that did this act, should say sorry to the village. But there really isn't much you can do because those lives have been taken. I think that it is very dangerous to keep our soldiers over there, I feel that they all should come home. War is also a major life changer for everyone involved. In this soldier's case, he just snapped, and committed severe homicide.

I think that this soldier should be checked or something because he sounds crazy. If he is unstable, then we need to find him help, and quick. Giving him the death sentence is definitely fair in this case. I am not always for the death penalty but in this situation I think it is so fair.

The United States has really agitated Afghanistan and due to that they could be in a threatening situation with them. The president of Afghanistan has already talked about this situation and is very upset and said that this situation is unforgivable. The United States should prepare to go to war with Afghanistan because one of our soldiers has just killed 16 of their civilians. That is just too much for most presidents to handle and the president of Afghanistan has declared this an act of terrorism against his country.
The Solider should go through a mental disorder evaluation to see if he has become mentally ill or has been dealing with home sickness from the war. Either way the Soldier that was the killer will definitely be in lots of trouble and I think there is no way that he will get out of it if he was not dealing with a mental disease. I Think he will be in prison for the rest of his life in this case and if he has a mental disorder he will be sent to a mental home for his whole life. This man will sadly face lots of charges.
The United States should start to move out of the Country because they have been there for about a decade now, and we shouldn’t stay in there after this big incident of terror to their Country. The incident was not over our ideas it was from one or two individuals who were possibly dealing with mental diseases. But even though we had a few of our troops have incidents like this it is our fault for sending them to Afghanistan so we will have to figure out if we want to stay in Afghanistan. In my opinion occupying the country is no longer need.

  19. The U.S. should be prepared for war just in case, Afganistan attacks, but it may just boil over. The actions of one soldier should not reflect a countries view of our military. The soldier should be extradited to the Afaganistany government, and they will try him. He may be mentallt insane or develpo9ling it, and that may help him, but he should still be held accountable. I think thats how all sodiers should be treated, if they do offensuive trhings they should not be able to cower behind the U.S. they should be accountable. I think the U.S. should gradualy pull out soldiers and let the country be, they need space to cool off so we should lt them do thaty.

I think that the U.S. should prepare itself for further antagonism and a continuation of the war with Afghanistan, since the brutal actions of an American soldier and the recent Quran burnings could become a reason for Afghanistan to fight back against us. In my opinion, the soldier who recently killed civilians in Afghanistan should be mentally inspected and given treatment if necessary, but if he committed his crimes knowingly, America should hand him over to the Afghan government as a means of disassociating ourselves from his actions. Those who have burned Qurans while in Afghanistan should be discharged from the military, since their actions have shown flippant disrespect for a culture that is not their own—a quality that we don’t need to have in our military.

The fact that the soldier’s actions have come so recently after burnings of the Quran in Afghanistan means that the Afghan people are understandably upset. I think that this is not a good time for our troops to linger in Afghanistan and that we should continue to send them back home. However, this has been the case for a long time, and the recent incidents only amplify our need to pull out as soon as is tactfully possible.

Reading this article made me very sad. It was very wrong of our solider to kill like that. Espically when more then half of those dead bodies were children. Besides that, I think that the United States should ALWAYS be prepared for any type of threats that could cause more kills and damages. After the recent wrongful actions of our men, we should be taking extra per-cautionary steps because the Afgans may decide to do something without a warning to get back at us. (Their president declared an act of terrorism) Think about it, if an Afgan solider, or even a civilian came over to the U.S and stared to shoot random people, including children, we would all be extremely angry. We would probably want revenge. So we should be very careful and try not to cause anymore of these outbreaks. The Afgans have already completely lost our trust.

As for the solider, I think that what he did was extremely wrong and should definetly get a punishment for putting more danger on the United states. Knowing that he was in a wreck and had some brain trauma, the U.S should examen him thoroughly. I think that if we give the Afgan custody of him, things may go very badly wrong. So we should handle him.

And lastly, I think that it would be best right now to pull the troops out of Afghanistan. It would be safer for them. I think that occupying Afghnaistan is pointless. The sooner we get the soliders out, the better. It will also allow tensions to decline a little bit.

I don’t think that the US should prepare to go to war because that could be the spark that causes war. I think we should have more discussions with the country and make it even clearer that we aren’t associated with the actions of the bad soldiers. We should show the Afghans that we plan to, and will punish those that have done wrong. If we can show that we really don’t want a war and are mad at those who could have caused it, maybe they will back off. It couldn’t hurt to be on guard in case they do launch an attack, but actually preparing like there’s a war could be their reason to attack. We need to improve our image there by showing that we’re as mad as they are about the killings and other dishonorable offenses.

We should punish the soldiers how we would if they had committed the offenses in our own country. We should show the Afghans that we give them the same punishment in both places. We might give them a worse punishment, because not only did they commit awful crimes, but they are now endangering the whole country. I think that they should be dishonorably discharged, then punished. Because of their cruel and heartless acts, the safety of our country and many lives are at stake.
After the poor moves that the soldiers have made, I think it would be best if we just pulled our troops. It seems that the longer we stay there, the more mistakes we are making. At this point we have no reason to be there, so we should just go. I think that we should give enough time that we don’t have to fear retaliation, and then go as soon as possible. I think that the best way to apologize for all this would be to punish the people at fault, then leave before anything worse happens.

No. To put it flatly, we shouldn't take precautionary measures to go to war with Afghanistan. The people in that country are frightened and angered at the recent killing of civilians (with good reason), but I'm sure they understand that this was the action of a single man, not our military force as a whole. This one man should be given severe therapy, and most likely life in prison, but the actions of a single soldier do not define a nation. This is not a "weakest link" sort of scenario. This is one man who has been forced off the deep end by being stationed over-seas in a war zone, away from his wife and kids. This is one of the MANY reasons that we need to get out of the middle east ASAP. I'm not saying we should just put everyone on a plane home tomorrow, mostly because that would be impossible, but that we should begin bringing troops and equipment home immediately, and have everyone back by a reasonable date such as in a year.

I believe that the US should always take precautionary measures against war, against any country. We should never "let our guard down," especially after these recent attacks. Obviously we don't have a good history with Afghanistan, so we should take some precautionary measures in case of war. Also we should be more careful about our actions towards other countries, and how it may affect them. I think that the solider may have had his own reasons for doing what he did. When he was over in Afghanistan he must have been through a lot and seen many horrific things, which might have influenced his actions. If that is not the case, then he probably has mental problems which he needs help with. Lastly I do not think the US should immediately pull out the troops from Afghanistan. If we want to take the troops out we need to make sure everything is stable there, and then slowly take them out.

  26. "US Soldier Places America in Harm's Way," or, more accurately, "America, Having Been Dragged into Two Un-winnable Wars, Luckily Finds a Convenient Circumstance Under Which to Withdraw from Afghanistan Ahead of Schedule." The war in Afghanistan is, currently, impossible to win, because we desire either to win quickly or to get the hell out, which is currently the plan except for a few soldiers stationed in a non-combat capacity, (which would open the door to betrayal by our so-called allies among the Afghan forces).

In 'Nam, we withdrew because there was not enough support at home, not because we were actually losing. The Tet Offensive was a military success from our perspective, but what stuck in our minds was not the total destruction of the Viet Cong, but the My Lai Massacre and a South Vietnamese officer blowing out the brains of a prisoner. This is almost exactly the same circumstance. We are winning the war in Afghanistan; we just aren't winning it very quickly. the American public demands a quick win, and we just cannot provide it. Chalk this one up to the press; they've won again.

The US should definantly not put more troops into afghanistan for that would be fighting fire wit fire. Thata would turn the situation into an even larger mess and put more soilders in harms way. This soilder who has killed inocent people for no reason should be put in jail immediatly in a Guantamano Bay like prison for he is definantly a terreroist.

Things like this can not be tolerared in our countries military. For we are supposed to be better than the taliban, but in this situation we are definantly worse. We should make sure no soilders will ever do this Taliban-like action again.
Im sad to be an american today. Obama should act up as our leader and make the right decision. This would be leaving the country who hates us, and fighting our internal wars.

I think the greatest precautionary measure we can take is to leave.
For a country (or most of a country) that wants:
    NO change
    NO education
    NO bonds or peace
    NO infrastructure
    MOST DEFINENTLY NO democracy
Then, the citizens will see. They will see, with a Taliban and no clear enemy. They will see the Taliban once again not working for its citizens, but against them. Obama can give this soldier the cruelest punishment there is, but it WILL not be enough to change anybodies minds. I think this soldier did us a favor (not the horrible inhuman killing- of course) but the gift of a reason. A reason to leave an endless war.

I think that the us should take precautionary, because we being the "best" country around we should be able to prove that we will not fail. We should prepare for the worst but hope for the best. Because we can not predict if the taliban is going to do something or not and we should be ready for anything in our way.

If a soldier or soldiers go on a rant and do stuff they should not be doing like going on a killing spree should be brought right back to the us and should be punished, but not just punished all their badges if any should be taken away because they are not true heros if they kill innocent people.

I think troops should be brought back home, but it might not be a could idea because of the hot water we are because of one of our troops. It should be tried out but we can not know if we need them to stay or not.

In this soldier's case, he just cocked out, and committed severe homicide. Obama did a good job of removing soldiers from Iraq and finally ending that war, but there is still one more war, and it should end as ASAP.

I think the soldier should be handed over to the Afghanistan government. We are already in hot water with Afghanistan, and denying them their right to punish the soldier could cause a war. It was very irresponsible for the soldier to go on a killing spree, mental illness or not. If an Afgan soldier where to the same thing with to us in America, without a doubt, his punishment would be the death penalty.

This was a very tragic event and I am very sad to see it happen. Could it have been avioded? I don't know. It probably might have been but it wasn't and it turned into a very tragic event. i don't believe that this was any americans fault. I think it was just a crazy man thinking terriblr toughts. There are people like him in every country.

As to the Talaban relatiating, I feel it is very possible. I am sure that the Taliban already hated Americans and this event just gave them an excuse for doing this. If the Taliban does attack we will have no defense against it. We don't know when it is going to happen or if it is going to happen. All I know is if the Taliban attack I would not be surprised and I hope very few people will get hurt.

Most people may think that since we, the U.S., is one of the leading countries, we would resume the battle even after all that has happened. However, I and almost anyone can foresee that we will take precautionary measures and focus our concern to “get out.” The massacres, including Qur’ans, has brought us even greater conflict in Afghanistan, which does have pros and cons. If we were to stay, everything would be worse for the soldiers, because of tensions brought up by the killings. If we were to leave, the soldiers and the U.S. would feel a slight sense of relief.

The soldier will probably be sent to prison, an as well be giving the U.S. more than a hint on what to do. Although this killing spree will most definitely hurt America in the future, this soldier wants us to think about the actions of now.

the most important thing we can do is to not involve ourselves in situations we cant control or don't understand. that being said we will never do that, therefore the next best option is to simply make sure the soldiers understand and respect the cultures they are dealing with. this was a prime example of what never to do. there is much speculation as to the number of gunmen, however the crime is still unforgivable. our first step is to enact the death penalty showing we don't take these things lightly. after that we must simply throw ourselves at the mercy of the Afghanistan government and apologize for the terrible incident. we are only as strong as our weakest link, so when our weakest link when on a murder spree, we will ALL be considered murderous weak links until we can prove otherwise. i suggest backing WAY off and understanding we should hope for the best but prey for the worst as well as those who lost their loved ones.

I do not think that we should prepare to go to war with Afghanistan, because they may take that as another sign of agression coming from American troops. The governemnt seems to understand what happened, and i believe that main threat the US troops are facing right now is from the Taliban. However, I am very suprised that wiht a military built on a system that prides itself on honor and social justice that this as well as the burning of the Quaran happened. Although, I believe that if the men accused of the killings is found mentally unstable, then tension may ease a little bit.
I think that if the slodier that committed this crime is not found mentally unstable, then he should be sentanced to a life sentance in prison, but, if he is found mentally unstable then i believe he should be sent to a facility where he can be properly treated for that. I do not think that the troops should pull out of Afghanistan immediatley, then the governemtn should do a mental health check on the troops, and be more careful in making sure that nothing like this will ever happen again. But, if on or two more incidents like thi occur, then we should plan to leave and not get ourselves accidentaly involved in a war.

Yes, I think that the US should take precautionary measures. Afghanistan is not going to take this shooting very well, and will most likely try to get back at the US for the shooting. I think that the US should apologize somehow to the town also to make them less mad and show we are sorry.
I think that the soldier should have serious consequences. Because of what he did some now are fearful and the US has to take precautionary measures. They need to first make sure that he is not unstable and if he is then treatment should be given to him. If he is not unstable then either let the Afghanistan government decide or but him in jail here in the US.
I think that we need to slowly leave and leave so that Afghanistan will be in good shape once we are gone, but we definitely need to leave.

They wouldn't if we are helping them like we have been for the past 10 years. Things like this happen in war but the person responsible should still punished, he should be interrogated to find out his motives. It is belevied that he had a head injury when this happened. If this is true it makes a bit explainable. US troops should not be pulled out immedaitley, they should just continue with their current plan as normal.

I think that the Us should take precautionary measures to prepare to go to war with Afghanistan over the recent actions of US soldiers, because it is better to be safe than sorry in a war. Also we do not know what “The Tailban” is thinking and since the U.S. Soldier made a bad decision it is more than enough that we be safe and get ready, so that we don’t get ambushed.

I think that the soldier should be taken home immediately because he may make a mistake again and again it is better to be safe than sorry. I do not think that the US shouldn’t give the Troop a big punishment but rather a temporary leave from the military so he can reflect and refresh his mind a little because I am more than sure that on warfare grounds it is very scary.

We should continue pulling troops out of Afghanistan because this incident is minor and should not hinder the soldiers from coming home. But we should just be more careful and take out troops slowly at a time.

I think that the U.S. should take precautionary measures after what happened. Afghanistan seems to want to go to war with us now, and although I want to say that they are over-reacting, America would probably do the same thing. What the soldier did was completely awful, he has given no reason what-so-ever and he has put our entire country at risk. I believe that America should apologize for what happened and try to avoid engaging in yet another war. Afghanistan should accept our apology, but I don’t expect that it is ever that easy when it comes to international relationships.
The soldier should be tried and put into prison. I don’t believe that anyone deserves the death sentence, but he would come pretty close. He is supposed to be representing America as a country that helps the citizens of corrupt countries, not kill them. Through his actions he has made the Taliban hate us even more, if that’s possible, and now they have something to get revenge for, he has given them a good reason to hate us. If we get into another war with Afghanistan, that one man will be responsible for hundreds of deaths. I think that he deserves prison for a long time, but I want to keep in mind that we still haven’t learned his reason for his actions.
I think that we should pull troops out, and get them home to defend our country. The Taliban will continue to advance in technology and resources in the future, and so we should do the same. They will not stop until either they rule the world or we stop them, once and for all. All this “protecting civilians” and helping under-world governments is all with the best at heart, but what is it really doing to stop the Taliban? I feel like they are a tornado screwing up entire countries and we are just following them fixing the damages. We need to stop them!

What happened in Afghanistan is terrible, however I do not think the United States should be worried about going to war. I think that the troops already there should stay there, and continue their work as they would if nothing had happened, but to stay alert. The person responsible should be punished, but I believe his mental state should be taken into account. Though if he has PTSD he is still responsible for the crimes, he should not have been deployed again. I think the United States needs to ensure the safety of both the U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan and the civilians there.

The U.S should definitely take precautionary measures. It would be the safe thing to do for the protection of our citizens. We don’t know what the Taliban will do in response to the actions of the U.S soldier’s shooting spree, but it’s likely that they will attack.

This soldier should be treated as if he had walked down a street in the U.S and killed 16 people. It’s not right to kill the innocent, and it’s put our country in a dangerous position. The soldier should be taken out of Afghanistan, because the war itself is probably affecting his brain negatively.

I think the U.S should leave Afghanistan. It would seem cowardly, like we can’t control our own soldiers, but it’s better than staying there and seeming like a threat. 2014 is only two years away, but who knows what other incidents could occur? This is a definite risk factor for the situation.

I believe that we should always take precautionary measures to war. No matter what we must prepare for the worst, but hope for the best. These actions by the US soldier will bring in terrorist threats, however I do not believe it will cause a war. However, we must be prepared for anything, so we should take precautions to be on the safe side.

This soldier should be banned from any military services and serve time in prison. What this soldier did was explainable and just plain dumb. He gave the USA a bad name and endangered many lives. What he did was extremely stupid.

There are pros and cons to pulling the troops out of Afghanistan. We should pull out the troops, because this has been a silly war wasting tons of money. The troops deserve to come home and be with their families. However, the country could unstabilize after we leave and a civil war could break out. I think there is no question that we should always take precautionary measures prior to going to war with anyone much less Afghanistan. I think that we should never resort to war. We, the United States of America, should do everything we can before we go to war.

Personally, I think we should show and represent our shame and disgust for the actions of specific soldiers in Afghanistan whom did things that were inhumane and unjust; proving that we are wrong for even being in Afghanistan in the first place. Primarily, Barack Obama should make a public announcement, announcing that he is ashamed for these previous actions and that he will not have America represented that way, because that is not what America should/does represent. I think we should try these soldiers in court because as much as the Taliban and "terrorists" have done, they have done nothing but mirror the hate actions of the terror organizations--if we are really in Afghanistan to try and get to a point where we can maintain somewhat of a peaceful environment, how do we expect by going about that if WE are committing hate crimes. I also would like the United States to take into consideration the psychological affects of being a soldier in a war, when all you do is kill people and that is what one is trained to do, how do we expect people not to go mentally crazy, and think that it is okay to commit such heinous crimes? We are not the country we claim to be if we do not consider the many problems that come with fighting a war, including the ones that backlash to our own country.

As I said before, I am adamantly against war. I think President Barack Obama is in between a wall and big rock on the question of pulling out of Afghanistan. Former President George W. Bush went to war for various reasons, mostly ones he claims not to have had. He went to Afghanistan in a somewhat understandable mission (supposed to be for one year). He used this war as an excuse to go to Iraq. Barack Obama, since then, has pulled our troops out of Iraq; a huge accomplishment, though we should not have been there in the first place. I think it will be very difficult to pull our troops out of Afghanistan because of the big, deep hole we keep digging, and digging and digging ourselves into. It will be very difficult to pull our troops out Afghanistan.

Of course the US should take precautionary measures we have already had threats of retaliation form the Taliban. I think every soldier right now over there should be on there toes and ready for anything to come. These next couple of weeks could be terrible.

I think this man just mentally broke down. He was fighting for our safety and just lost it. I think we should give him help and maybe a couple years in prison. I feel like his punishment relies on if he is mentally unstable or just did those actions on purpose. As for the people who burned the Korans, they accidently burned them so I don’t think we should punish them.

I think we should try and take our troops out now and if not now very soon. Things could start getting ugly and we don’t want more US lives lost.

They have more ability’s that we have so I troops need to do everything in their power to try to stop them. Even if we have to get more troops, we have to do what’s recessionary to try our best.

I think that we should keep our troops in Afghanistan and take them out. War these days is deadly. There are more and more people dying because of war. I believe that we should take precautionary actions against going to war with Afghanistan. This is because they are not a country to take threats lightly from. Many of their people already dislike us so they may make good on their threats.

For the shootings and the man responsible, I think that the man just finally cracked and couldn't take it anymore. I believe that he should either be sent home or placed in a mental institution. This is because I believe that the man didn't really know what he was doing and just broke under all the pressure of warfare.

I believe that the United States shouldn't take out the troops immediately, but that we should do it gradually. Taking them all out immediately could be taken as a sign of weakness from other countries and weaken our standings and reputation. What should be done is to gradually remove the troops, so that if anything happens we will still have some troops ready to fight.

I do not believe that the taliban has enough manpower to take us to war in the traditional sense of the word. I think that they would be more likely to commit terrorist attacks.I think that the United States should always be ready for a terrorist attack. However, we should be on extra high alert now, because the afghans have made a verbal commitment of revenge, and have vowed to attack america. When a group of people has already shown that they are willing to kill themselves to damage us, we need to take everything they say very seriously.

As for the man who committed this crime, he should be submitted to the afghan government for punishment. Frankly, he committed a crime on afghan soil, against the afghan people. Nine of the sixteen people killed were afghan children. Any human being who does something like this, insane or otherwise, should be submitted to punishment by those he has wrongfully attacked. This man is a disgrace to the american people and the american military. We pride ourselves in being a country that is fair and just, and knows what is right and wrong. The man who did this went completely against that and killed children. that is unacceptable and horrifying.

We came to afghanistan a long time ago in order to stop a terrorist threat. Regardless of the actions of a few, the threat has not been stopped. America should be a country that sticks things out to the end, not do a half-baked job and leave because of a few soldier's actions. I believe that the USA should take some precautionary actions. The people of Afghanistan won't easily forget the shooting, and will probably attempt to find a way to get back at us. I think that we should try to do something to apologize to that village. The next president should try to get the soldiers out of Afghanistan. It will get the soldiers out of harms way, and I think the we have spent too much time there. In this soldier's case, he just snapped, and committed a very bad crime. Obama did a good job of removing soldiers from Iraq and finally ending that war, but there is still one more war to be ended
I think that the soldier should be checked out for mental diseases, and should be given treatment if he needs it. If he is fine then he should face a lot of jail time. I am not a fan of the death penalty, so I believe that if he mentally stable, he should be placed in jail for life.
I believe that it would not seem right to pull the US soldiers out immediately, or else it should have been done long ago. If things get completely out of hand however, escorting them all out immediately should be considered.

I believe that it would be a huge mistake for us to prepare for war with Afghanistan. This, if made public, would surely enrage the afghan people and tighten already high tensions between Afghanistan and the US. I am not saying that this would be a bad idea, but I think that we should make it very quiet and not let the media catch wind of it. If we can keep it under wraps, we should prepare for a defensive standpoint in a war with Afghanistan. The recent actions of US soldiers have been tightening the tension and this last event could have put that tension over the top.

I believe that all individuals found involved should be court-martialed and sentenced to jail time. They should also not be allowed to ever rejoin the military and the most recent soldier should have a psychiatric evaluation to determine if he was mentally insane or had ulterior motives for this attack. If these steps are taken the Taliban may see that we consider this unacceptable behavior and are charging them like we would if these events occurred in the US with our citizens being killed.

I think that the US should definitely keep troops in Afghanistan even though the tension is so high. Higher security should be enforced and we should tread carefully for the next few months and try to fix up our relations with Afghanistan. If we pull our troops out; I believe that they would fester in their anger and launch an attack on the US. Without our troops there we would most likely encourage terrorist activity and support to continue on in broad daylight. If we keep our troops there we will probably be able to smooth out relations by 2014, which is the current expected recall date from Afghanistan.

I think, under the circumstances given, the U.S. should take precautionary measures to protect our country. The shootings and burning of qurans were negative actions taken on our end, they caused fatalities and it would be suspected that Afghanistan seek revenge through war. I think the solider that was responsible for the shootings in Afghanistan should be given a life sentence in prison; his actions were violent and tragic. His mental state may have had some effect; in that case I think the most important thing would be for him to get help. Lastly, I think it would be best if the war in Afghanistan was ended, though taking into consideration the poor actions the U.S. has taken against them, that might not be the safest idea. I believe it would be best for all of our soldiers to come home, and then decided what measures to take to ensure the U.S.’s safety.

  51. From what I've heard and read, I think the US should take precautionary measure to prepare for war. Afghanistan seems to be giving legitimate threats and they should not be taken lightly. It's scary to think something might happen because of these people's actions, but the US has to be ready for anything. I can see where Afghanistan is coming from, because we reacted the same way on 9/11. They think it's only right that they get "revenge".

I don't think there is an appropriate punishment for the soldiers and their actions. They have put the US in significant danger, and that's not something that can ever be overlooked. For the soldier that went on a shooting rampage and killed 16 people, I think it's only right for him to be sentenced to the death penalty; or at least a lifetime in prison.

This war has been going on for too long, and so many lives have been lost along the way. It's expensive, stressful, and has become pointless for our country. The United States should be prepared just in case Afghanistan does attack.
This soldier should definitely have some type of penalties/punishments for what they decided to do. I also believe that they will end up getting the right type of punishment for their actions. I think that other soldiers should now be extra careful with their actions and try to prevent Afghanistan from wanting to start a war with us.

I do not think we should go to war with them, but I think we should prepare. If we have drills it would make the US better. I do not think we should go to war with
Afghanistan because we need to move on from them. Imagine if you were getting picked on at school. One day, the kid says something even more mean than usual. The right think is to tell a teacher, being really nice to the kid, or ignore the kid. The wrong thing to do is to fight back at him. That is what the US is doing. They keep fighting against Afghanistan. We just ended a war with them, so we should stop being mean to Afghanistan and to move on to our new enemy, North Korea.

The solider that killed the people in Afghanistan should go to jail for fifty years. Killing innocent families is not okay, even they are part of the rival country. The women can not go to war anyways because Afghanistan is sexist. I think the Afghanistan government will not go to the US, but they will talk with the US government about it.

I think the soliders should wait. We should not go to war unless we really need to. It will take a little bit of time. But also, we need to forgive the man that killed the people in Afghanistan and everything the US and Afghanistan has done to each other. We know it is wrong, and we learn from our mistakes. 54. I don't believe that the US needs to take precautionary measures to go to war. Obviously though, it would be the smart and safest thing to do. I don't know if Afghanistan would penalize the whole country for the manic actions of one lone soldier. Although, the actions of burning Qurans in itself is wrong as the beliefs of many were disrespected in that manner and killing of anyone, especially of a civilian needs to taken account for.

I believe that the soldiers who commit these acts do need to be punished. They need to be removed from the country and taken back to America, and shall never be able to return. That's the best way to ensure the prevention of more crude acts.

Saying that all the soldiers who committed the acts of burning Qurans and killing civilians should be deported and never to return again to Afghanistan is a punishment. Although, I believe that all troops need to be pulled out immediately, even those who haven't committed the mentioned crimes. well i think there are a few options for the other troops response to this matter. they could a.) leave, and we wouldnt have to worry about the afghans unless they came to us or b.) the us government could do a sort of COUNTER story to this one, showing us troops being supportive of the afghan people. maybe one about caring for the litle kids, or feeding the people, or rebuilding their homes. something supportive, to show that we are NOT all bad people.

I am pretty sure it is a rather jolly good idea to be prepared for war like always. When should one not be prepared for war? Never. Always prepared. Constant vigilance. It's just one incident. Don't worry about it. I doubt Afghanistan cares too much considering how much other stuff is happening in their country. I highly doubt there will be war for something as mild as this but it is always a jolly good idea to be prepared for war like always. When should one not be prepared for war? Never. Always prepared. Constant vigilance.

This guy definitely had a reason to do this. Not sure what, but he has some reason. He probably also has a mental disability that caused this. I feel really bad for him but I definitely don't think he deserves the death penalty. Maybe life in prison but we need to see both ends of the beautiful rainbow spectrum to understand the situation. It's scary though he killed the people. I bet his K/D ratio is really high.

I believe that the United States shouldn't take out the troops as soon as possible, but that we should do it over time. Taking them all out immediately could seem like we're scared of other countries and weaken our pride and win/loss ratio. What should be done is to gradually remove the troops, so that if anything happens we will still have some troops ready to fight.

Yes I think that the United States should take measures to assure the safety of the citizens of the United States as well as the troops. We need to do whatever we need to do inorder to keep The United States of America safe.
I think that this soldier should be put in jail because we can’t have him spreading ideas around to other soldiers that may make them want to do the same thing. Also he should go through therapy because his mind is not all the way there.
I think we should continue to occupy there. But just lay low for a while so we do not get mixed up in another bad war.

  59. I definitely believe that the U.S. should take measures to keep American citizens safe no matter what. That being said, this soldier did not kill other soldiers in and act of war, but Afghan private citizens, who were not acting in a state of war.
I think that due to the overwhelming mental and physical stress war inflicts on each and every soldier, there should be better mental health requirements and treatments to ensure a soldier's well-being. Hopefully, that would drastically decrease the number of instances such as this, that kill citizens for no reason.

    2. I don’t believe the shooting should start a war. A U.S solider acted alone this crime was not commited by the whole U.S. The burning of the Qurans was wrong and unnecessary but I also don’t believe that should start a war either. The afghans may take these actions very harshly though but Yes, I believe that America should be ready to go to war.
    3. I think they should be put in jail because what they done is not ok and they should not think it was ok. America needs to show that we don’t condone this kind of behavior.
    4. I think Americans should be taken out of Afghanistan. Not immedietly but they should slowly start to release their hold.

This would be leaving the country who hates us, and fighting our internal wars

I belive that the war in irack is very bad because it endangers the cows that are living in newyork. Sometimes beef costs 30 or 40 dollars a week due to the war in iraq. Thata would turn the situation into an even larger mess and put more soilders in harms way. This soilder who has killed inocent people for no reason should be put in jail immediatly in a Guantamano Bay like prison for he is definantly a terreroist.

I do not think the US should take precautionary actions to prepare to go to war with Afganistan. We have occupied the country for a while and I believe that if we continue thought more of these incidents will happen which could cause a war. I believe that the these soldiers should be stripped of their rank and sent back to the USA wit hno money or belongings at all. What they have done to these people by urning the qurans is just not right. I think the USA should pull out immedietly because our troops are in danger but some of our troops may do this again and we can not have that happen.

i think that we should take precautionary toward afganistan becuase i tihnk that you can never be too careful. i think that anytime someone threatens to go to war with us we should take precautionary.

i think that what thay soldier did was very stupid of him. i think that he should be punished harsly for his actions because he didnt just pput himself in danger him put the whole country in danger. i dont know what exactly should be done about thu=is but i know that he should be punished.

I don't really see how we could take anymore precautionary measures. We're already at war in Afghanistan anyway. The only way to be more precautious is to send in more troops and that is the last thing we should be doing. The soldier who shot all the people should be given a fair trial just like any other criminal. He should also be tried in U.S. courts because I personally wouldn't trust the Afghanistan court system. I would also imagine his punishment would be very severe. I've never agreed with the war in Afghanistan so I'm all for pulling out our troops.

  70. Of course we should take precautionary measures! What kind of question is that? We are already at war with them... So do you think going through their town and shooting a bunch of innocent children and women and men will make anything better? I hope that we were already taking precautionary measures against them, before the incident, but now that we did this, we should be on our toes, preparing for anything. If they did that to us, do you know what we would do to find them, how much money we would pay into finding the people responsible for doing that? A lot.

Well i think they should be put to death, it doesn't matter which way it is, he just needs to not be living anymore, what he did was an evil thing to do, inhumane, and sadly, he was the one out in the field representing our country, and how do we look now?

I think that we should definitely pull our men out of Afghanistan, we don't want another one of those incidents happening.

I think that the US should definitely take precautionary measures. Although the US soldiers are only a small part of the military and don't necessarily represent the actions of the United States, the Taliban will definitely be very angry. Even if we do not go to war, it is better safe than sorry. We should be prepared for any signs of war.

I think this soldier should receive the harshest punishment possible. It was unacceptable, and the Afghanis killed were not militants. These types of people are the reason why the US keeps getting into trouble in the Middle East, and why our troops are having to stay there longer and longer. I think the media is also to blame for these types of incidents. Many Americans are against all Muslims and people of Middle Eastern descent, and believe that they are terrorists with intentions to kill their children and family. This is the reason why some people want to kill all the Muslims.

I think the US should dwindle the number of troops as soon as violence dies down a little bit. The US presence is also a reason why the Taliban and terrorists are so forceful in their attacks. We should only keep the amount of troops needed to protect our own country and be a supplement to the Afghan troops. Although we should be safe and prepared for attacks, the withdrawal of at least some troops is long overdue.

I think the US should take precautionary measure to prepare for war. We don’t know what “The Taliban” is thinking but we just need to be prepared for the worst but hope that they dont want to go to war with us.
I think the solider should be taken home immediately because with him just making this decision is really harming America. he should also be punished for what he did. Because of his actions he is making us look bad and we do not want someone like him to represent us.
I think that we should pull our men out of Afghanistan, so that we can prevent one of these incidents from happening again.
