My article is about the shooting that occurred in Florida this past week. A high-school named Trayvon Martin was shot and killed while visiting his aunt and uncle in Florida. As he was going to the local store to buy skittles he decided to wear a hooded jacket. On his way back from the store he was walking around the gated community where he was staying, a community watch official spotted him. The official assumed he was up to no good and racially profiled him as all he could see was a black teenager wearing a hooded jacket in a gated community. The man called 911 and told him that he saw suspicious behavior. the operator told him to stay put and that they would send someone. The man did not listen and instead followed the teen. The man called 911 again and told the operator he was in pursuit. The operator told him to stop and to leave. The man did not listen and confronted Trayvon. There was a struggle and the man used a concealed weapon to shoot and kill Trayvon Martin. The man then pleaded that it was self defense which is legal to use deadly force with in Florida. the man had not been arrested even though Trayvon broke no laws and had no reason to seem suspicious other than racial profiling and wardrobe assumption.

I think this article is truly sad and shows the problems we still have especially with racism. It shows how we still profile and kill innocent people in america, just because of their skin color. most other countries have lost the racial tension and work together much better, so why can we not do the same? I was shocked to learn that despite what the operator said, the man would not stop following Trayvon. I was surprised to discover that the the man was not arrested. One question i still have is: When will the racial tension stop?

Hoodie's evolution from fashion mainstay to symbol of injustice/Emanuella Grinberg
    http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/27/living/history-hoodie-trayvon-martin/index.html?hpt=hp_t1 / March 27th

This article features the reaction behind Trayvon Martin’s death and the history of hoodies. The 17-year old boy was shot to death by the neighborhood patrolman because he was wearing a hoodie, giving him a “suspicious” outlook to the patrolman, who killed the boy out of “self-defense.” The injustice spread across the nation and provoked hoodie marches against the racism behind the incident. The article expanded on the news by filling in on the history of hoodies, naming the clothing to be exposed in many crimes and graffiti and also a common stereotype in movies.

When I read the article, I thought that the death of Trayvon was incredulous; his death was caused by a simple hoodie. It’s almost outrageous. Many people sport the attire regardless of their race and it is not a valid reason to be targeted and killed. It’s too ridiculous to put into words. I have to admit that wearing a hoodie can seem suspicious, especially under the cover of darkness, such as the incident that occurred, but that does not give anyone the right to attack the wearer. It is logical—almost common sense—to interrogate a person after you have sufficient proof. Outright killing is barbaric and inhumane. Like the people participating in the hoodie marches, I believe that Trayvon deserves justice, and something must be done about the killer.

The article I read was about the shooting in Sanford, Florida of Trayvon Martin, a 17-year old boy. He was walking home one day when a patrolling officer shot and killed him because he "looked suspicous." The man was not punished or sentanced to anything for this crime he commited. People are now holding rallies and walks in Trayvon's honor. They will all wear their hoods when they do the walk.
I think this man should be prosecuted for sure. I don't understand why they let him after it has been proven that he shot Trayvon for no reason. Officers and people with similar jobs should have a legitimate reason for even stopping someone in the street, not just because of the way they look. This is a really sad story and hope Geoge Zimmerman gets what he deserves.

‘A Test You Need to Fail’: A Teacher’s Open Letter to Her 8th Grade Students
    Ruth Anne Dandrea
    www.commondreams.org March 23 2012
    https://www.commondreams.org/view/2012/03/23-8

This article was basically a letter that an 8th grade English teacher wrote to her students after administering a writing test. The test was originally designed in order to be able to predict which kids would do well and which would fail on the writing exam in 11th grade. This teacher, after giving the test to her 8th graders at a school in New York, realized something. When grading these papers, she realized that the scores are based on one thing, and one thing only. Is it grammar? Is it punctuation? Is it well formed paragraphs and organized ideas? No, no, and no. The one thing is whether or not the student used two citations from the text in each answer. The teacher thought this absurd and pointless, and in her letter apologizes to her students for having to give them such a test. She feels that there is someone out there that doesn’t want us kids to succeed, or to learn, and so whomever that body is looms over us and makes us take silly tests, and has us answer opinion questions with yes or no.
I am horrified. There could be great, inspirational writers out there that are 12, 13 years old. These kids could be writing award winning pieces, but if they don’t cite the article twice it is worth nothing. It makes me mad personally that there are these old people sitting in their fancy offices making up these guidelines with which we will be tested, that could not predict squat about our writing capabilities. They probably know less about the subjects than we do. What is also absurd is that some people think that you can place a student somewhere based on one test. I disagree with the theory that the E.O.C’s are beneficial in placing students in the next grade. You should be looking at the overall performance of the students, but of course that requires more work. Overall I really liked the article and hope something changes.

17-year-old Trayvon Martin, a Florida high school student who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood watch captain. This event has captured the attention of the world. Eyewitnesses report to police that they heard a scuffle, then a cry for help, and then a gunshot. According to the Sanford police report, George Zimmerman, 28, a self-appointed neighborhood watch captain, was found armed with a handgun, standing over Trayvon. He had a bloody nose and a wound in the back of his head.Trayvon was pronounced dead at the scene. He has no weapons on him, only a pack of Skittles and a bottle of iced tea. Zimmerman told police he killed Martin in self defense. Police do not arrest him, or do a drug or alcohol test and they also did not run a background check.

I think that police did not do the right thing in this case. I think that they should have arrested this man the night it happened. I am not saying this because I am black this is ridicules. If people went around killing people and then saying that it was out of self defense this world would be full of murderers on the lose. I also think that if the script was flipped and Trayvon killed Zimmerman he would have gotten arrested. People say that this is not a race thing but the first thing Zimmerman said was “suspicious … black male in his late teens”. Trayvon was doing nothing wrong he had pack of Skittles and a can of iced tea how does that make anyone feel like they are in danger. George Zimmerman Is a fault because for the main reason the police dispatcher told him not to follow him but he disobeyed them and followed him instead, the police dispatcher told him that for his own safety. To me is seems like for one they are bringing irrelevant things out to make it seem like trayvon was this bad person on the day of his death he was suspended from school for 10 days for possession of an empty marijuana baggie, that has nothing to do with him getting killed. I also believe that some of the other people getting involved in this like the “New Black Panther Party” which is offering $10,000 to anyone who makes a citizen's arrest of George Zimmerman. I don’t think what they are doing is necessarily right but there are many people in the world that if there child had been killed they would have lost it and tried to potentially harm Zimmerman. I also think that the whole self defense thing is a piece of crap, what can Skittles and an Arizona ice tea do to a person. I also think that when Zimmerman said he came at me first is A LIE! If he had not been following him and listened to the police dispatcher we would not even be talking about this. It is very sad that something like someone getting killed has to shine a light on all of the racial things said to not only black people but Hispanic, Asian and all of the other races, Many of these things happen everyday but are not meant to be big things but they are . I closing I believe Justice will be served!

I feel like the police did not take this case in the right note. How could they not arrest a man that just killed another man. How is that fair? Why is that right? George Zimmerman is a liar and made up that the 17 year old went at him first or threatened him first. So many people have been standing up for this boy, but little has been done. I feel that George Zimmerman killed him because of his race. The boy definitely, probably didn't look "sketchy" at all. Like every teenager has a hoodie. I don't see how someone could have the nerve to do something like that to someone.

This article is about the terrible shooting of Trayvon Martin. Trayvon Martin was walking home inicontly after he bought a bag of skittles and a can of iced tea. He was shot to death by a local neighbor hood watch-men who claimed he was doing it for self-defense. I think that it was just an excuse for him to take his suppiorority into action for once.

I think that it is terrible that Trayvon Martin was killed for really no reason. It is good that it spreads awearnes about self¬-defense issues. I hope that the neighborhood watch-men is put in jail for what he did. If it can be proved that Trayvon did not attack him the neighborhood watch-men should go to jail.

SAT and ACT to Tighten Rules After Cheating scandal by Jenny Anderson.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/28/education/after-cheating-scandal-sat-and-act-will-tighten-security.html?_r=1&ref=us#
My article is significant because it is about education. The article tells about how the rules SAT and ACT testing and college entrances have changed because of a cheating scandal that happened on Long Island, New York. The new rules include providing photo identification when you sign up and when you show up to take your test. The new changes will be applied nation wide starting in the fall. There are hopes that the new rules will make teens reconsider cheating.
My opinion is that this is good because its not fair for the kids who took the test themselves and maybe did not get into a college because someone did better than them who cheated. I believe this is fair and will help people be more honest and just try harder instead of cheating.

What happened to Trayvon Martin was sad. Death so young, how could it not be? But this case has been blown way out of proportion. First of all, George Zimmerman is Hispanic. So don’t give me any of the “ hate crime” deal. Second, George Zimmerman was found injured at the scene of the crime, pointing more to the evidence of self-defense. Now that we have established that this case has nothing to do with race, and that Zimmerman was also harmed, lets continue.
The liberal media wanted this attention so they could slip in the argument against this “stand your ground” gun law. Now, in this case it did not quite show its purpose, but what it was normally was created for was to stop violence. In the case of an violent person the other could defend himself or herself. Now this law added that there was no need to retreat first, and if and only if you were receiving lethal threats could you use deadly force. I think that is reasonable. I do agree with the fact that neighborhood-watchers should not be able to use this to their advantage. But in this case Zimmerman didn’t, he acted in self-defense. Some may say it was Trayvon who screamed, but in this case I think it was George.

My article is about a 17-year-old, Trayvon Martin, who was shot for looking suspicious. This happened on February 26th. George Zimmerman, the one who killed Trayvon, claims it was in self-defense. He has not been arrested because police say that there is no evidence of it being different from self-defense. Trayvon was returning home after buying skittles and a drink from a convenience store. Some people believe that it was a racist thing, considering Trayvon was African American and Zimmerman is Hispanic.

I think that it is horrible that a homicide could go unpunished. Even though Zimmerman says it was in self-defense, no one actually knows what happened. He killed a person and I think he should get at least some jail time. The article said that thanks to Florida’s policy, other homicides have gone unpunished. Also, there should be more laws about who could get a gun, so something like this doesn’t happen again.

Article Title-JetBlue pilot charged with interfering with crew
    Author-Danny Robbins
    Source-Yahoo news (http://news.yahoo.com/jetblue-pilot-charged-interfering-crew-203602772.html)

The article that I chose was about a recent incident on the Jet Blue airplane company. On one of the recent flights that was going to Las Vegas, the pilot started to run through the isles yelling things about terrorists and numbers that he tried to correlate to terrorists. The passengers were very scared so eventually a group of them managed to bring the pilot to the ground and the co-pilot made an emergency landing. During the incident, the pilot also chased a flight attendant. Luckily none of the passengers or crew members were seriously injured.

This was a very scary incident for me because during my life I have ridden many times on airplanes. So far for me there has not been any trouble. However, now that I read this next time I go on an airplane and say hello to the pilot and crew members, I will probably have a slightly different attitude towards them because now I will have a suspicion that they are crazy and I will probably a little more scared that the plane will crash. I am happy that the passengers from the Jet Blue flight are safe because it would be a tragedy to lose them just because of one crazy pilot.

George Zimmerman told officers that he saw a "suspicious" person wearing a "dark hoodie" he then shot the teen saying that it was self defense. Many, including Trayvon Martins family believe that race was a major part of this shooting and there are now protests going on. George was not arrested.
I think that they were very unfaire here, George Zimmerman should have been sent to jail, he killed a man and there was no evidence to prove that Trayvon was attacking him. There was also no weapon found on Trayvon, I think that the police should have and still should look deeper into this murder.

The killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was a tragic attack. He was a young Florida high school student. Trayvon was attacked by George Zimmerman. A neighborhood watch. This issue has brought world-wide. Eyewitnesses were involved and reported to police that there may be a problem occurring outside, then there was a cry for help from Trayvon, next there went a gunshot. Zimmerman’s reasoning was because he was wearing a suspicious looking sweatshirt while walking home from the store from purchasing skittles and a tea. Trayvon was pronounced dead at the crime scene. He had no weapons or anything illegal on him. While Zimmerman on the other hand had be armed with a handgun. Police did not arrest him nor did they take his gun away or check him for drugs or alcohol. Way to do your job !
In my opinion police did not do anything that was affective. Personally I think because the boy was black they didn’t find it necessary to take it any further then they did. If the attack would have been the other way around I feel like Trayvon would have been arrested right on the spot without any evidence. The police simplily told him not to follow Zimmerman but he disobeyed and did it anyway. I also feel that the police are trying to avoid the situation because Zimmerman’s story has change. Now his story was that he was defending himself from Trayvon. I find it a little strange that a grown man had to kill a 17 year old boy that had no weapons just to defend himself. Police are also trying to say that Trayvon got caught with weed at school way before the shooting, that has absolutely nothing to do with this situation. The police need to face the fact that this time someone other than a black person committed a crime.

JetBlue Clayton Osbon, age 49, has potentially earned himself 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for having a mental meltdown while inside the plane midair. During his meltdown Osbon interfered with the flight crew and nearly induced panic to the passengers on the plane by screaming about 9/11 terrorist and banging on the cockpit doors. Also during his ordeal, luckily, he had left the cockpit and went to the bathroom while another pilot who was traveling on the plane took his place. The two mentally calm pilots had to make an emergency landing while the other passengers on the plane calmed the Osbon down.

In my opinion, and my mother's, we have decided never to take jetBlue again mainly because of their neglect towards passengers and then the ordeal with Osbon. I think that every airline company should have a mental background check on all of their pilots and their flight crews. I am happy that the other pilot was on the plane and was able to be a co-pilot.

My article was about how cheating has become more and more evident in school results. An investigative report published in Sunday’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution found indications of standardized test cheating in school systems throughout the U.S. The seven-month long investigation of testing data examined 1.6 million records from almost 70,000 public schools nationwide. Suspicious score increases, high numbers of erasures and other irregularities were uncovered in about 200 school districts. The indicators found were similar to those discovered in Atlanta Public Schools, says the AJC. The AJC says that 196 of the country’s 3,125 school districts had enough irregularities that the odds of these irregularities happening by chance alone are worse than one in 1,000.

I don’t understand why the adults are so surprised by these results. I don’t know what teachers cheating, but I know what cheating by the students at Chapel Hill High School, alone, is extremely common. Just today, while taking my Biology test, I knew at least 3 people in the classroom whom were cheating. I think either teachers don’t care very much or they are oblivious to these actions. I think part of the reason is that the authorities focus too much on test scores, making them count as just about everything when it comes to passing a grade or firing a teacher.

There will be skyscrapers built in the neighborhood of Hollywood. Many complain that it would ruin the feel and charm of the neighborhood. They want to make it more like New York, more vertical than horizontal. They are trying to make more public transportation, and to grow the city to match. Many are protesting the change though it could be good in many ways. This would be the only change in over 25 years.

I think that they shouldn’t build the additions to the city. I would change the entire feel and the way the city works in general. I would make it an even more urban city than it already is, raising not lowering crime. Twenty to Fourty feet high skyscrapers won’t make improvements to the city. It might make some jobs, but overall, It would not be an improvement. In my opinion, it would be a good thing if this didn’t pass.

There are a lot of stories other but like everyone else the most important one to me is about Trayvon Martin's death. Anyways in Sanford, Florida on February 26 Trayvon was shot by George Zimmerman who was the neighborhood watch captain. Supposedly he said that Trayvon had punched him and so he shot him y means of self defense. The police questioned him but said that they didn't have enough evidence to say that George Zimmerman should be arrested.

I really think that George Zimmerman should be tried and there should be a thorough investigations. I mean the police came so the ambulance must have came and picked up George Zimmerman if he was injured. The paramedics in the ambulance could identify if there was any wounds or cuts and if they treated it or something. Anyways I really think this guy is crazy. He was tailing Trayvon for a pretty long time and called the police like what 100 times. I mean he probably thought Trayvon was going to do something bad just because he was wearing a hoody and walking at night. That is like one of the most racist things I've heard of. A man killing another person just because he thinks he's going to do something bad. Even if Trayvon did assault him, he didn't have to pull out a gun and shoot him. I mean a punch to the face wouldn't kill you. The guy was older too come on common sense. If someone did punch you, would you shoot them or try to get out of the car and restrain them from hurting you then call the cops. Oh and if you were followed by a mysterious person in a car at night, wouldn't you freak out or something. Yeah it'll probably make you pissed too. I can see why Trayvon punched him if he did. Who would say, " Oh some mysterious person is following me, I'm just going to ignore him." So yeah I think George Zimmerman should be put in jail and be locked up a for a very long time if he is really wrong, which I think he is.

I chose to write about an article about the killing of trayvon martin. On february 6th, 2012, 17-year-old african american male Trayvon Martin was killed in sanford, florida, by an adult white neighborhood watch captain named george zimmerman. Trayvon was carrying nothing but the clothes on his back, a pack of skittles candy, and a can of iced tea. Zimmerman' excuse was that trayvon looked suspicious and was killed in self defense. As of now, Zimmerman has yet to be apprehended or even taken in to custody for questioning. On friday, there will be a nationwide protest during which people will wear hoodies to honor trayvon and stand for justice.

I think that what happened is wrong on lots of levels. Not only did Zimmerman become suspicious for the sole reason that he saw a black person wearing a hoodie walking at night. so, zimmerman thought it was justified for him to KILL trayvon. Not only that, the police did not even question Zimmerman's(who killed a man) story. The racism appalls me. If the roles had been reversed, and trayvon was the neighborhood watch captain and zimmerman was the innocent walker, and zimmerman had been killed, the police probably would have been all over trayvon. This is one of the worst injustices i have heard of, and we should keep trying to get zimmerman and possibly the police officers arrested.

If it can be proved that Trayvon did not attack him the neighborhood watch-men should go to jail

I think that what happened is wrong on many levels. Not only did Zimmerman become suspicious for the sole reason that he saw a black person wearing a hoodie walking at night, Zimmerman thought it was justified for him to KILL Trayvon. Not only that, but the police did not even question Zimmerman's story even though security camera footage revealed him to be uninjured despite his claims that Trayvon attacked him.

An Australian couple, John Kan and Rachel Evans, were on a vacation in Canada last August, and they had their baby two months before they were supposed to. The baby’s name was Piper. Piper was born two months earlier. Since Piper was born two months later, Piper had to have extra hospital care for three months. John and Rachel thought travel insurance could pay for hospital care, but travel insurance does not pay for labor. The problem with this is John and Rachel owe the government a million dollars. They are paying $300 a month for the past few months. It would take 278 years to pay off the million dollars the John and Rachel have to pay.

I feel really sorry for John and Rachel, but they have to pay for all the hospital care. Unfortunately, they will not be able to pay off the money in their lifetime. But the most important thing is John and Rachel has Piper. Piper is going to give them a lot more happiness then John and Rachel having an abortion. They are going to learn a lot from Piper. Also, John and Rachel have money. They will not be poor and homeless.

Apple hit by China Foxconn factory report
    29 March 2012
    http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-17557630

This article is about an independent investigation that has found "issues" with working practices at Chinese plants that makes iPhones and iPads. The FLA (the US Fair Labor Association) stated that the working conditions included long hours of labor where employees worked more than 60 hours a week and sometimes for seven days without the required day off and along with poor conditions. The FLA launched a probe and says that they will reduce hours, protect pay, and improve the staff. This investigation is one of the largest investigation of a US' company. Foxconn employs 1.2 million workers to make products for Apple, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, and many other companies.

I think that it was a good thing the investigation took place. I think it was a good thing because workers in China were working way too much overtime hours without getting paid the right amount of money as well as being put at health and safety risks. The Foxconn company had agreed to work on changing the amount of time the workers will work and limit it to 49 hours per week with breaks. After this long investigation had taken place, more workers will be in good hand and hopefully their working conditions will improve in terms of their health and safety hazards. Their salaries will also improve along with the working conditions.

    shooting/index.html?hpt=us_c1

17 year old Florida high school student, Trayvon Martin, was shot and killed by, George Zimmerman. George Zimmerman was a self appointed watch captain. George Zimmerman told officers that he saw a "suspicious" person wearing a "dark hoodie" he then shot the teen saying that it was self defense. Many, including Trayvon Martins family believe that race was a major part of this shooting and there are now protests going on. George was not arrested.

The sweatshop tycoon and exploiter of the proletariate of china FOXCONN was given a very stern investigation recently and now vows to change their practices and improve worker compensation. This group is the main factory producing apple, dell, and amazon electronics and due to china liberal laws concerning worker rights, the unions haven't much say in preventing the 60 hour a week work schedules and few breaks received by these employees. Luckily after many suicides and even more attempted suicides after the nets had been in place, the FLA thought it could be a good idea to take a look at what was happening.

This is just another reason why pseudo-marxian philosophies make for an awful society. The workers there were subjected to sleep depriving schedules with little pay in an environment they consider unsafe. This investigation is a great step forward in the establishment of worker's rights.

Article Title: School District Told to Replace Web Filter Blocking Pro-Gay Sites
    Author: Michael Winerip
    Date: 3/26/2012
    URL: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/26/education/missouri-school-district-questioned-over-anti-gay-web-filter.html?_r=1&ref=education#

This article is about a Missouri school district that has recently come under fire for using a web filter that blocks sites in support of LGBT rights while leaving sites that are against such rights unblocked. The school district, Camdenton, has been criticized for bias in its acts of censorship—it was sued by the American Civil Liberties Union last summer— but it doesn’t seem that the school superintendent, librarians, board members or district web master made this decision. Instead, the developer of the filter that Camdenton currently uses was found to be a person going by “Dr. Guardian” who lives in Fareham, England. Camdenton officials have said that students can appeal to the district’s web master in order to get a site unblocked, and superintendent Tim Hadfield has said that “We do not discriminate against gay people or anyone else.” A United States district judge in Jefferson City has also issued a preliminary injunction that orders Camdenton to discontinue “its Internet filter system as currently configured.”

I personally think that the censorship of any site on the Internet (aside from ones whose sole purpose is pornography, obscenity, etc.) is unnecessary in schools, especially high schools such as the one discussed in the article. In my opinion, people who are old enough to make rational judgments about how they use the internet in schools—most of which constitutes schoolwork—should not be kept from viewing sites that happen to go against some people’s morals. There is also a practical side to this argument: people who might happen to be researching a topic that relates to gay rights would also be blocked from some websites by this filter. At the very least, if people are willing to censor one side of a controversial topic, then they should also censor the other. Of course, if this were to happen, then neither supporters nor detractors of gay rights would be satisfied. In short, I find it unsurprising but disheartening that the issue of this kind of censorship has to be brought up in the first place.

Coming to your bicycle: wireless braking? By Steve Almasy
    CNN.COM / MARCH 26, 2012
    http://whatsnext.blogs.cnn.com/2012/03/26/coming-to-your-bicycle-wireless-braking/?iref=allsearch

Holger Hermanns believes safety wireless systems on any type of transportation will evolve and improve, and Hermanns is really after the technological advances in transportation. In the article Hermanns stated that the world is a playground for the computer scientist and that he personally would have never thought that anyone would be interested in wireless braking in bicycles. Hermanns chose a bicycle because it was inexpensive, easy to build, and because it would be a lot safer than a car or train. His prototype is a cruiser like motorcycle bike that people could ride to work or around town. Once the rider puts pressure on the sensor, which signals the brake, the harder the grip the more pressure the receiver tells the brakes to apply; and the back wheel is braked by cranking the bicycle petals in the opposite direction. Hermanns also states that even if it will be years until you or someone could buy this in the shop, he believes that he can add ABS brakes instead of working with simple disc brakes.

I think that what Hermanns is doing is a fabulous idea, and even though some people may think that it may be very dangerous, on the bright side people may not have to waste unnecessary energy. Almost every day I ride my bicycle to the park, around the neighborhood, and many other places; and even though Hermanns work is a fabulous idea I still like the way how everyone right now is riding their bikes without automatic brakes and other ways to make the people of this world fatter.

On February 26, 2012, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot, and killed by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain. Martin was returning to his father's fiance's house from the convenience store, while talking on the phone to his girlfriend. When Zimmerman became suspicious he called 911, and reported the "suspicious" activity. He was specifically advised to not follow Martin, but he did not listen. Once Martin realized someone was following him, he started to sun away, and Zimmerman chased after him. Zimmerman claims that once he had stoped chasing the boy, Martin had followed him back to his car and attacked him. He also says that he killed Martin out of self defense, after he was "attacked."
I think it is appaling that Zimmerman has not been put in jail yet. There is evidence that Martin was not acting "suspiciously," or doing anything wrong, so there was no reason for Zimmerman's actions. The only problem with the case is that no one was actually there when the shooting occured, so no one knows for sure what really happend. Although, I believe that there is enough evidence and Zimmerman should be put in jail.

The article I read was about Trayvon Martin. He was killed be George Zimmerman in February while walking home from a convenience store. The article debated whether or not Trayvon Martin provoked George Zimmerman before he followed and eventually shot him. It was also about what actions the police should have and still should take. This case is more complicated than many other similar ones because of the racial tone to it. Some people believe that one of the calls to the police was from Zimmerman before he shot Martin. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch member, said he was suspicious of Martin because of his appearance and behavior.

The concern of the American deaths in the NATO was expressed in “Afghan army, police pose growing risk to U.S., NATO troops.” The cause of many of these deaths is due to the Afghan police or army forces. The chance of troops dropping out and having a low support system for the Afghan security department is a concern. This issue was proven Monday when an Afghan local police shot a U.S. solider in Paktika. The NATO would be taking a risk trying to stem off, in fear of the need of trust bonds between small groups of military advisors. The second plan is still in question.
I think police officers everywhere are becoming a little suspicious, as we saw with the Trayvon Martin case. New standards need to be set, and attacks need to be stopped. Along with NATO, I am curious as to what they will do to improve these issues with violent attacks.

Focus in Trayvon Martin case shifts to Washington
    http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/27/justice/florida-teen-shooting/?hpt=hp_t1

The murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, a Florida high school student, has caught national attention. George Zimmerman, self-appointed neighborhood “watch captain”, shot and killed Trayvon and later stated it was in self-defense. Zimmerman told officials Martin looked “suspicious” wearing a hoodie with his hoodie up walking in the neighborhood at night. He also said Martin acted upon him first and gave him a bloody nose and cuts on his head. Trayvon Martin was not armed and was found dead with a pack of skittles and iced tea. Zimmerman was not arrested, charged, or drug tested by Florida police. He even got to keep the gun he used to shoot and kill Trayvon.

I think it’s absolutely crazy how inactive, stupid, and crazy these Florida policemen are. Clearly, George Zimmerman needs to be tested for drugs, and arrested for the public’s safety. The police did not question Zimmerman’s story despite the substantial amount of evidence they already have. The racism and prejudice in this story has been controversially talked about all around the country, and its spreading awareness and shining light on more cases like this one. What happened to Trayvon is wrong on multiple levels, and the man that did it should be rightly punished. Suspicion gives you no right to open fire on a man or woman, black or white. My heart goes out to Trayvon’s family, and I only hope for them that Zimmerman is put in jail. The state of racial prejudice can change, but it starts in the minds of people; both black and white.

Trayvon Martin was a 17 year old high school student in Florida who was murdered last month. Martin was murdered by a man named George Zimmerman who claimed it was self-defense. Zimmerman who claimed he was a neighborhood watch man and that Martin looked suspicious. Martin had just come from a store where he bought Skittles and iced tea and was on his way home with his hood up. There has been mixed comments from witnesses if it really was self-defense and if Martin attacked Zimmerman. This case has become very watched throughout the country
I think that it wasn’t self-defense because it’s a 17 year old teenager taking on a grow man. I don’t know anyone who would pull out a gun even if they got in a fight with a kid without a gun. This case is just very dramatic and I hope the best for Trayvon Martins family and hope they get through this rough time. I think that George Zimmerman deserves to go to trial and have the court of law decide his punishment. I also am concerned about the neighborhood watchman laws and think that they need to be looked at in each state.

I did my current event this week about Trayvon Martin. Trayvon was a seventeen year old walking home from a convenience story after buying some tea and skittles, when he was shot and killed by George Martin. Trayvon was unarmed, and there is great speculation about Zimmerman’s side of the story. Zimmerman claims that Martin attacked, gave him a bloody nose, and tackled and pinned him on the ground.
I do not believe Zimmerman’s side of the story, from the stories I have read from witnesses. The reports about Martin also make him sound like a good person, not someone who would just randomly go up and attack a stranger for no reason. I think this incident was also largely the fault of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground Law”, a law stating that if you feel threatened in a situation, you can use physical violence to defend yourself. Just this law makes me nervous, because anyone could pretty much shoot anyone without trouble. I think the first step to make sure a problem like this does not happen again would be to abolish this law, and be more careful when giving out gun licenses in the USA. There are also some racism issues in Florida, just like there are in any other state, and I hope people will soon begin to learn how wrong racism is and try to stop it. I don’t understand how fully grown and armed man could feel threatened by one teenager with just a drink and some candy, and I hope no tragic events like this will ever happen again.

I read this article about Syrian volunteers who risk their lives to work on defusing mines set up by the Syrian army along the Turkish border. People have been blown up by mines and trying to defuse these mines and stuff. The land mines are part of an attempt to stop illegal smuggling and border crossing around Turkey and Syria. This one dude got his left leg blown up by mines and is currently in the hospital. Such a shame. About ten Syrians have been treated in Turkish hospitals as a result of these landmines. Another dude uses a foot-long metal kebab skewer to defuse bombs which is very impressive if I do say so myself.

Well I am surprised how little attention this article is getting. When volunteers, regular people just like you or me, are defusing bombs we know something crazy bout to happen. It's 2012 Mr. Waters. I don't think it's a good idea to defuse bombs like that, but a man has got to do what a man has got to do, you know? I feel bad for these guys cause they have to defuse these bombs or they people might step in them and lose a left leg or a right leg or a right ankle or a left ankle or a right arm or a left arm or even die. A lot of people also don't trust the Turks and volunteer without knowing anything about the mines/bombs. So sad. So dangerous.

“Video raises new questions in Trayvon Martin killing”
    CNN, March 29, 2012
    http://cwatersatchhs.blogspot.com/2012/03/current-event-21-your-topic-of-choice.html

One night in Florida, Trayvon Martin walked down to a convenience store and bought some skittles and iced tea. George Zimmerman, who had volunteered as the neighborhood watcher, saw Trayvon and called the police on him because he looked suspicious. Trayvon Martin had his hoodie up, and that seemed intimidating to Zimmerman. The police told Zimmerman to leave the guy alone, and the problem would be dealt with. Before this event, Zimmerman had called the police several different times for random events, so this could make him less believable by the police. Not heeding to the police’s orders, Zimmerman confronted Martin, and Martin is now dead. The case on Trayvon Martin has begun, and the question is this – did Zimmerman shoot him in the case of self – defense, or was it the conclusion of a racial attack?

I don’t think that either case has enough evidence to prove that one thing happened or another. I think that if I had to choose to believe in one side, I wouldn’t believe everything that Zimmerman says, because there are suspicious elements against him. If I saw someone walking down the sidewalk in a hoodie, I wouldn’t automatically assume that it was someone dangerous. If I could see that they had a knife or something harmful, I would immediately call the police. But Zimmerman called the police without much evidence at all, when Trayvon simply had gone and bought some candy and a drink. Back to my question – what side will the jury pick when Zimmerman is put on trial? I think that everyone will be looking closely at the evidence, giving their own opinions, but the decision will be finally made at the trial, and we will see if he is convicted or not.

Hoodie's evolution from fashion mainstay to symbol of injustice

Trayvon Martin, 17 year old who attended a high school in Florida was shot to death by George Zimmerman on February 26. Zimmerman, a 28 year old neighborhood watchman reported a suspicious looking figure in a hoodie walking from a store supposedly late at night. Many people (including Trayvon’s family) believe this assault greatly dealt with race. The cops barely dealt with it, and when they did it was just a short clip of Zimmerman being brought to interrogation with handcuffs. They didn't even put him in jail for the night. Zimmerman claimed he was bashed onto the sidewalk floor until he managed to escape and shot him to death. And apparently this is called self-defense.

I believe the cops did the least effective thing possible, when a little common sense could have been used; Zimmerman murdered someone else and was barely injured. Also, like I mentioned before, many people thought this had to do with race. I believe it doesn’t, because George Zimmerman is hispanic, possibly a less frequent chance for hate crime?

    Witness details Travyon Martin's killing
    http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/29/justice/florida-teen-shooting/?hpt=hp_t2
Trayvon Martin’s murder has sparked a controversy throughout the country. Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood watchman, who had called the police forty-seven times in the past year, called the police again on February 26 reporting “a suspicious person” in the neighborhood. When Zimmerman called the police, the police told Zimmerman not to follow the “suspicious person”. This suspicious person was Trayvon Martin, an irrelevantly hooded, seventeen year old who was carrying a bag of skittles and ice tea back to his cousin’s house, returning from getting these snacks from a near-by gas station. After a month, Zimmerman has not been investigated.

Today, a witness to the murder came out saying that Zimmerman did not appear to be very hurt after the witness heard the gunshots. “Within a couple of seconds after the shots, one of the men "was walking toward where I was watching, and I could see him a little bit clearer. Could see that it was a Hispanic man. He didn't appear hurt or anything else."
But the man, who by now had left the grass and was walking on the sidewalk, did seem worried, "with his hand up to his forehead," the witness said. "Now, a couple of seconds later, in the dark, you see that person that's alive walk away; you know, obviously, OK, he must've got up and he walked away, where the other person is still laying there, face down."

17 year old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed over a month ago by a man who claimed he was using "self defense." George Zimmerman had no bruises or scratches on him though he claimed Trayvon broke his nose, and he also made 147 false police calls. All Trayvon Martin had on him was skittles and ice tea. He had his hood up and was "suspicious" looking in Zimmermans words. The biggest factor was that Trayvon Martina was black and Zimmerman is white and racist.

I think that George Zimmerman should be accused of murder. People all around the world are outraged by this and justice should be served. I think its crazy that he can get away with this. He obviously is racist and it's not fair to Trayvon, Trayvons family, and to african americans.

US suspends food aid to North Korea over missile plan

The US has recently suspending the promised food aid to North Korea, after North Korea has decided to push ahead with their long-range missile program. Satellites captured images of a rocket launch site, in the middle of what looked like preparations. North Korea stated that it was only launching a weather satellite, but South Korea and the United States believe that they are advancing their missile program. This launch has even drawn criticism from China.

Oh boy, North Korea's going to do something extremely stupid again! It's not like they're ever done that before, right? Hopefully, they'll chicken out like last time, if not, there'll be some serious consequences. I still have no idea why North Korea still does stuff like this. It's like they're all constantly angry about something or other... oh. I just don't see why they constantly act like they want to start World War 3. What do they gain? RIght now I'm inclined to believe that Kim Jung Un is just trying to prove that he... isn't incompetent?

Mandatory 10-Digit Dialing Starts Friday in the Triangle
    WRAL 3/30/12
    http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/10925039/

This article is about new regulations of phones and making calls. Now whenever you make a call, you have to include the area code reguardless of where you go. This new requirement comes from a new area code because our current seven area code system is becoming too crowded. To avoid confusion, people now have to make sure to dial ten digits instead of seven. This is just for the triangle, but other areas have already been doing this for while. Charlotte has already had this regulation for almost a decade now. This could be costly for some businesses who will have to redo signs and advertisements to accommodate the new requirement.

This is relevant because if your speed dials are saved in seven digit format, you will have to go through and change your contacts and speed dials. I think that this is good thing to do because I have accidentally misdialed people while in different area codes before and I think that it will be good to have some clarification. It may mean a few more numbers to dial when you want to call somebody but it will be good to have a uniform system across the US. One concern I have is if it has been publicized enough so that all people will know that this is coming into affect today. I don’t think there has been enough public announement and that this will cause some confusion when you can’t call anybody. Overall this is a step forward, but not a very publicized step forward.

In the worst calamities, these veterans rush to the rescue
    http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/29/world/cnnheroes-wood-rubicon/index.html?hpt=wo_t4

The article that I chose isn't about a current event, but rather about a man who has started disaster relief team. Jake Wood, a former marine, responded to the Haiti disaster not by sending money like many others did, but rather with a facebook post saying "I'm going to Haiti. Who's in?" In three days, he and seven other volunteers were on their way to Haiti. Team Rubicon, as they have called themselves, has grown from what Wood thought would be a "one-time mission" into a large non-profit organization. Over 80% of the group's volunteers are military veterans and the group has conducted 14 missions all over the world.

I think that this is a great example of how one person can change the world. What started as a simple Facebook post has turned into a large, 1400 man organization. I also think that it was great of Jake Wood to start this because many people volunteer to go help during disasters, but few of them actually know what they are doing. Having experienced military veterans really helps as it makes the job go by quickly and efficiently. This is also good for veterans as many come back from war to a jobless home and nothing to do, and this organization gives them the opportunity to continue to serve the world.

The article I choose was about the shooting in Sanford, Florida of Trayvon Martin, a 17-year old boy. One day he was walking home when a patrolling officer shot and killed him because he "looked suspicous." The man was not punished or sentenced to anything for this crime he commited. People are now holding rallies and walks in Trayvon's honor. They will all wear their hoods when they do the walk.
I think this man should be prosecuted. I don't understand why they let him after it has been proven that he shot Martin for no reason. There are two different stories, and one of them is lying. Officers and people with similar jobs should have a legitimate reason for even stopping someone in the street, not just because of the way they look. The police for sure didn’t take this case right. George Zimmerman should for sure be arrested and prosecuted.

President Barack Obama vowed on Friday to forge ahead with tough sanctions on Iran, saying there was enough oil in the world market - including emergency stockpiles - to allow countries to cut Iranian imports. In his decision, required by a sanctions law he signed in December, Obama said increased production by some countries as well as "the existence of strategic reserves" helped him come to the conclusion that sanctions can advance. "I will closely monitor this situation to assure that the market can continue to accommodate a reduction in purchases of petroleum and petroleum products from Iran," he said in a statement. Obama had been expected to press on with the sanctions to pressure Iran to curb its nuclear program, which the West suspects is a cover to develop atomic weapons but which Iran says is purely civilian.

I really do not understand why Obama is stopping the Irans to export anymore oil from thier country. This could be one way that we could gain their trust, and hopefully not go into war with them anytime soon.

Neighborhood watch captain who shot unarmed black teen 'had history of aggressive tactics'- but won’t face charges

This article was about the shooting and killing of Trayvon Martin. Trayvon was a 17 year old black male, who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman on February 26th. Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin when he was going back to his father's house with some candy. Zimmermann has not been charged and claimed that Trayvon looked 'suspicious.' There had been many complaints about Zimmerman earlier, but nothing happened. Zimmerman was on the phone with the police who told him not to attack and keep his distance, but he claims that Trayvon attacked him and he killed his in self defense.
This event is very upsetting to me. I feel that Zimmerman definitely need to be charged for killing Trayvon Martin. If he listening to the police and just left him alone Trayvon would still be here with us today. I think that everyone needs to continue fighting for Trayvon Martin, and get Zimmerman locked up. Today our school had a whole day in memory of Trayvon Martin, and getting this case known. Hopefully something will happen to Zimmerman soon, and nothing like this will ever happen again.

I chose an article about the shooting and death of 17 year old Trayvon Martin. I think that George Zimmerman should be tried as any other person in Sanford, Florida would be regardless of his father's social status with in the law system. Zimmerman provoked the situation by follow Martin after he was told not to by police. In the phone conversation between George and the 911 operator you can hear Zimmerman mumble under his breath "f*cking coon" referring to Trayvon. Personally, I think that this slur that George probably meant for only him self to hear, proves that this case is a racial profiling issue. Racial Profiling is still current in today's society between blacks, whites, and even hispanic/latinos. After listening to a radio station talk about the situation, one man called and said that cases such as Trayvon's had happened before and were common with in Sanford, but Trayvon's was the first to hit the news - BIG TIME. Justice for Trayvon should be accomplished and I'm pretty sure it would be highly appreciated by Martin's family and friends. Though I did not personally know Trayvon, the case has hit home in my heart RIP Trayvon Martin. <3

This article is about a 17 year old boy who got shot by a neighborhood watch man, who said Trayvon looked suspicious with his hoodie up. He was shot by George Zimmerman. i think that this situation should most definitely be taken to court. even though trayvon was in a gang, he still was an innocent man who didn't deserve to be shot by a watchman. it also wasnt fair to Trayvon that George stalked him before he shot him.
this should not have even occured, it has upset many people all around the world. i think Zimmerman should be charged for stalking and shooting unnecessarily. Hopefully justice will be brought to Trayvon soon.

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/30/us/trayvon-martin-profile/index.html

The article I read was about Trayvon Martin, and the horrible event that took place a couple weeks ago. When on his way back from a grocery store, he got shot by a local self appointed community watch. This event has been in the news all day every day, since the shooting, for it brings up a lot of important issues. One of them being self defense issues, for the shooter, named George Zimmerman claimed that Trayvon was a potential threat, and he was only protecting himself.

For spring break I am going to Florida where the horrific event occurred, and would appreciate it if justice is served for Trayvon Martin. He was an innocent kid, and his killer is defiantly guilty. He killed a youth, and must pay. Just because you can get around the law in Florida by claiming self defense, does not mean that someone is above the law.

FDA says it will deny request to ban BPA
    CNN Fri March 30, 2012
    http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/30/health/bpa-ban-denial/index.html?hpt=us_c2

In 2008, the FDA was asked to regulated the use of BPA in food packaging. BPA is a chemical found in clear and hard plastics called polycarbonate. An example of where BPA is found is in water/soda bottles, and containers of infant formula. The FDA has now recently denied the ban of BPA in products manufactured within the US. Although, the FDA stated that this declaration is not necessarily set in stone, as they continue their research of the effects of BPA.

I thought this article was interesting. It confused me as to why the FDA would not ban the use of BPA in certain manufactured products. It seems as though there is enough evidence that this chemical is harmful, and the FDA is ignoring that. While they want to further study the effects of BPA, companies have started to remove the use of BPA from baby bottles and water bottles. I don't believe that the FDA needs to spend more research on this chemical because there's no use. It's best to just ban BPA so that and kind of harm to someone's health is prevented.

This article talked about how 51% of all U.S. homes has an Apple product. At the turn of the century Apple was barely getting by, then they came out with the ipod, which was a very big hit. The ipod was the predecessor of the iphone, and ipad, which now are very popular.
I think that it is riduculous that 51% of the homes in the U.S. have Apple products, ad thst this change happened over ten years. It jumped from 2% to 51%, over ten years which is a very big rate. I think that apple is going to continue to grow and be very prosperous.

Liike lots of peopls I also chose the article about the murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. He was a high school student in Florida, and was shot and killed by a man named George Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood watch captain. Eyewitnesses reported to police that they heard a scuffle, a cry for help, and then a gunshot. According to the Sanford police report, George Zimmerman was found armed with a handgun, standing over Trayvon. He had a bloody nose and a wound on the back of his head. Trayvon was later pronounced dead at the scene. He had no weapons on him, only a pack of Skittles and a bottle of iced tea. George Zimmerman told police that he killed Trayvon Martin in self defense.

I feel like the police did not take this case in the right direction. How could they not arrest a man that just killed another man. How is this just? George Zimmerman seems to me like a liar and made up that the 17 year old attacked him first. So many people have been standing up for this boy, but little has been done. I feel that George Zimmerman killed him because of his race. It seems ridiculous that the boy could have looked that 'sketchy' that he had to be followed so closely. I think this case is horrific, and hopefully the right judgement is made in the end.

I chose the events relating to Trayvon Martin. He was a 17 year old, walking home with iced tea and skittles, when he was shot by George Zimmerman, captain of the neighborhood watch. He reportedly called 911 about a suspicious person, then followed Trayvon and shot him. He claimed that Trayvon attacked him first, and that he was only acting in self defense. Later, evidence such as police recordings and other documents have made Zimmerman look even more guilty.

My stand on this issue is towards siding with Trayvon, but at the same time I don't want Zimmerman dead, or anything like that. I don't know if Trayvon was killed because of race, but looking at the evidence, it looks more and more like he was just an innocent kid than a violent attacker. Even if he did look suspicious, Zimmerman shouldn't have followed him after calling the police, and especially shouldn't have shot him. However, even though I think Zimmerman is guilty, I also think that the groups that have a bounty on his head are wrong. He doesn't necessarily deserve to die for what he did, but I think that the proper steps should be made to find the actual truth, and to uphold the law the way it should be.

My article is about a shooting in a California College that killed 7 people. Apparently the shooting began at 10:30 in the morning when someone yelled "He's got a gun." The shooter was in the classroom and stood up and began shooting. No one knows the motive of the killer yet, however he has been arrested.

He was a student at the school. The shooter stole one of the victim's cars and drove off. He later surrendered to police near a gas stations few miles away. It is so sad how many of these school shootings have occured. How are these students getting these guns and going by unnoticed. I feel as if security at schools is becoming more and more lackadaisical. It is an upsetting scene and something I hope doesn't happen again. At least the shooter was caught.

I read an article about Trayvon Martin. He was shot by a neighborood watch men. He was coming back from the store with skittles and Ice Tea. Then supposedly, Trayvon atacked George Zimmermen. Then George shot and killed 17 year old Trayvon Martin. Now people aroound the country are supporting Trayvon by wear hoodies. The Miami Heat took a team photo all wearing hoodies in respect for Trayvvon Martin.

I think that all this could be a little too soon. Police are not even sure about all the evedence. I believe that Trayvon is inocent but we do not know all the information. I think that until we know all the information we should not jump to conclusions and start speculating about the racism. Until we know all the information we should respcet both people and let all the information come out.

Recently there has been a tragic event that shocked millions of people all over the world. The story that has been exploded by the media is that this African American boy, Trayvon Martin, a 17 year old was visiting his father in a gated community. He leaves to go to the grocery store to purchase some iced tea and Skittles. He comes back and a man is feeling threatened by his presence. He shoots Trayvon on sight, killing him. All of a sudden, this event becomes a race war against white people and black people. People are siding with Trayvon and showing their support by wearing hoodies and carrying iced tea and Skittles.

I think this whole situation is kind of odd. The story has evolved from this man names George Zimmerman shooting this completely innocent child, to the boy attacking this man and him shooting for self defense. I did some extra research into this topic. The widely publicized image of Trayvon standing next to a wall was taken when he was 11. I don't know about you but everybody looks pretty innocent when they are 11. Then I saw his most recent photo. Honestly, he looks pretty threatening. He has no shirt on, gold teeth, sagging pants to the floor, raising his middle fingers, and making obscene gestures. Also, evidence shows that he was a minor drug dealer. He was suspended from school days before the attack for bad behavior.
George Zimmerman was found on the scene with bruised body parts and a broken nose, so there was obviously a struggle. I'm not saying what George Zimmerman did was right, no, I just feel like the stories being published online are misleading.

I read an article on Trayvon Martin, he was a seventeen year old boy who was walking back home after purchasing skittles and iced tea. Then he got to his dads neighborhood and a man named George Zimmerman (the neighborhood watchman) shot Trayvon with a gun he had. This story has hit media big and there is a big controversy going on.

I think that George Zimmerman should be charge with man slaughter and should be given a huge fine. George Zimmerman in his defense is saying that Trayvon tried to attack so for self defense he shot him but all i hear is George saying a bunch of lies. So after that everybody has lost contact with George and no one knew where he was, everyone was mad because Florida had done nothing with this case. But just last week George was charged with murder and was put in jail and justice for Trayvon was finally here.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/24/science/counting-species-on-a-little-patch-of-earth.html?pagewanted=2&_r=1&ref=science

this article is about a woman in northern washington who documents the various species of creatures which may inhabit her small plot of land. her husband and entomologist (he studies insects) and so was interested in her little project too. this started after she found a rather odd looking moth on her windowsill, a moth that in fact is normally found in europe, and even there it is rare. this half inch long moth she found on her window was the beginning of an interesting adventure. that is because after more searching, this woman found more and more and more foreign species just on her small land in a fairly urban part of washington. this may be due to the high trade and foreign exchange through here, or some undiscovered reasons.

i found this very interesting for a few reasons. first is that this woman was finding completely obscure species half way around the world from where they are natural. what are the chances, right? and had she not seen this tiny moth, and taken a moment to examine it, she wouldnt have discovered the other species, like the wasp and squirell she found. the other reason is that this could be a bit concerning... if these foreing species are coming in so easily, could they not also easily bring in disease? or be harmful to american crops? maybe the customs offices in global ports need to better examine their policies, or maybe this is jsut the start of some crazy migration or something.
