Current Event # 7: American Troops: "Home for the Holidays!"

Current Event # 7:
American Troops: "Home for the Holidays!"
Due: Friday, October 28, 2011

In 2008, in the height of the presidential campaign, then-Senator Obama made a promise to give our military a new mission: ending the war in Iraq. As the election unfolded, he reiterated this pledge again and again -- but cautioned that we would be "as careful getting out of Iraq as we were careless getting in."
Last year, the President made progress toward achieving that goal. He brought an end to the combat mission in Iraq, and through the course of the past 14 months, more than 100,000 troops have returned to their families.

Now, that promise will be wholly fulfilled. Today, President Obama announced that the rest of our troops will be home by the holidays:
Over the next two months, our troops in Iraq—tens of thousands of them—will pack up their gear and board convoys for the journey home. The last American soldiers will cross the border out of Iraq—with their heads held high, proud of their success, and knowing that the American people stand united in our support for our troops. That is how America’s military efforts in Iraq will end.
But this moment represents more than an accomplishment for the President. It marks a monumental change of focus for our military and a fundamental shift in the way that the our nation will engage in the world:
The United States is moving forward, from a position of strength. The long war in Iraq will come to an end by the end of this year. The transition in Afghanistan is moving forward, and our troops are finally coming home. As they do, fewer deployments and more time training will help keep our military the very best in the world. And as we welcome home our newest veterans, we’ll never stop working to give them and their families the care, the benefits, and the opportunities that they have earned.

  1. I think it's great that our troops are finally coming home. Quite frankly I don't think we should have ever sent them into Iraq, but at least it's over now. Then again we already started another war in Afghanistan for no apparent reason. Honestly what is it that makes the government always want to be at war? It's really getting out of hand, but we ended one so that's a start

My uncle ed served as a navy diver before I was born. He served on the U.S.S. Topeka, which is a submarine. They never really got into any fights or got damaged or anything, but we weren't in a war at the time so nobody really expected one. I wasn't alive when he came home, but I'm sure it was a relief when he did. It's also the feeling of relief that other American families will get when their loved ones come home.

The decision to invade Iraq was made on the assumption that there were weapons of mass destruction within their borders. When this proved false, it put the Bush administration in an awkward position. They had put the country billions of dollars in debt, deployed thousands of soldiers, and been responsible for the killing of thousands of innocent civilians. Naturally, the next administration would want to end it. I understand that Obama probably did his best to end the war as soon as possible, but in my mind the war should never had happened. It was the result of post 9/11 paranoia and I guess we should just be glad it has an end date. The atrocities of the war will be looked back on with mourning and distaste. The deaths of innocent Iraqi civilians-along with innocent Americans cannot be forgiven, and probably never will be.

Many families will rejoice at the news of their loved ones returning. Many more will mourn the fact that their loved ones didn't live to see the day when they could. They are the casualties of an unnecessary conflict. I remember seeing news programs with people talking about their lost family members.

I believe that we should have brought the troops home months ago. The day 9/11 was a terrorist attack followed by ten years of war. The war was in direct response to the attack and served as an act of revenge on the countries accused of planning the attack. However, on May 2, 2011 U.S American Navy Seals carried out an operation in Pakistan. This operation was to execute Osama bin Laden, the leader of the terrorist group. Now this, what I thought, should’ve been the end of the War.

My mother is a recently retired master Chief of the United States Coast guard. When she was in the military my mom and I moved around a lot. Military base to military base, state to state. Throughout my life I have met tons of military veterans, troops, and soldiers who were about to be deployed. I also met many who had been wounded by the war. Whenever I went into a clinic to get a doctors checkup I saw soldiers who had lost limbs and were depressed after coming home. I don’t think this war should end. I think this war never should have started

I support Obama on his mission to bring home our troops. I find that the Iraq mission has helped stabilize their infrastructure. The one thing that extremely annoys me is when some people worship Obama for being so peace loving, when they don’t even notice he started the war in Afghanistan (which I support him on).
I think this is good for cutting spending and good for America. Although I don’t support extreme isolationism, I feel that America has prospered when we keep about ourselves. I don’t think this war will be one for the textbooks.

As for relatives who are serving in the army, I have no one (no one I know closely). However, I do know that both my grandpa’s have served in the Vietnam War. One of my grandfathers was a psychiatrist in the navy helping solders with mental and emotional problems. The other actually had served on the front lines. I am happy that this war can be over for now.

I think it's great that US soldiers are finally returning from Iraq. After ten years of war, they are able to return home in peace. I don't believe they should have ever been sent there in the first place though. I think that we sent them into Iraq blindly, and caused a war to begin without a real purpose. Because of this unnecessary war, many loved ones have died, and many people now mourn the loss of their family members. I think Obama did a good job of ending this pointless war, and preventing more people from getting killed.

I don't have any family members or know anybody personally that was in this war. I do know that many soldiers have been wounded very significantly and killed in this war though. It's good that Obama was able to carefully come to a close with the war, and allow many American's to return to their homeland and family.

  7. I think that it is amazing and great to hear that the troops are returning home safely to their families form Iraq.. I do not really enjoy the idea of war but if people volunteer to go to war then I feel like they major respect and honor. It really is a hard/huge decision to make. You possibly could be taking your life away just for the country. I think Obama is making the right decision of ending this war and sending everyone home back to the US. This also is a huge step for america because this war is over so know america can stop spending money. So, by ending this war you save money and peoples lives.
I do not have any family members or friends that I know who have served for our country. That is why I am so strongly against war because.

I think that it is great to see that our country has a good outcome from this war and that our troops that have given their lives on the line to help serve their country. Also I strongly support Obama for bring our troops home by the holidays. Which will give families one less thing to worry about. The decision to invade Iraq was made on the assumption that there were weapons of mass destruction within their borders, which was proved false. In which made Bush look bad. He had put the country billions of dollars in debt, deployed thousands of soldiers, and been responsible for the killing of thousands of innocent civilians. Which I am strongly pissed about, because Bush didn’t do anything good except waste money and troops.

I do not have any relatives/family that are currently in or serving in war/the US army. Also I do not know any people who have contributed to this war or any others.

Having our troops return home after nine years of war is a tremendous accomplishment. Withdrawing the troops provide more time for training and future planning for America’s welfare. If this achievement were to be written down, I think it may be biased. Iraq’s contribution to the end of this war may be mentioned once or twice but the whole chunk of the text may contain elaborate details about the process of ending the war on America’s behalf. It would be a story of victory and wisdom.

I do not know anyone personally who has served our country. However, I do know that thousands of soldiers have families living across the country praying for their safe return. This accomplishment will be a miracle to their friends and relatives.

I think it's a good idea to bring our troops home. The war in Iraq has lasted much longer than it should have, even after the focus of the war shifted from Iraq. I don't think there should be a specific "winner" in this war. One of our main goals in the Middle East is to keep those unstable countries secure and safe from insurgent attacks. If Iraq security forces are able, they should be the ones to protect their own country and keep it safe without the direct help of Americans. I don't think this war should really have ever started, but I wouldn't blame the Bush administration or others who contributed to the start of the war, because the period after 9/11 was confusing and nobody really knew what was actually going on.

I think that the return of the troops will bring much needed relief to their families and friends. It is also a step closer to ending the entire war altogether. If Iraqi forces can secure the country on their own, it will show that other unstable Middle East countries can take care of themselves without American interference, and eventually lead them to retake full control of their countries.

I think it’s great President Obama is finally ending the war in Iraq after ten long years. The fact that all troops will be home so soon puts a smile on my face knowing soldiers will get to spend the holidays with their families and loved ones. However, I think the war should have ended years ago. It’s been a long time since the 9/11 attacks happened, and I think our nation ultimately forgot what we were fighting for in the first place. There have been a lot of unnecessary casualties and victims from the war that could have been avoided if it was stopped 9 years ago. Not only will this save lives, but it will cut down tremendously on the expenses we’ve payed during this war.

I don’t know anyone personally that fought in this war, however I am still extremely happy for the families of the soldiers that are returning. I will celebrate with the soldiers, because I think they really deserve to be with their families for the upcoming holiday season. Although families of those who died could be celebrating if the war was ended sooner; it’s still good it was put to an end eventually.

I think that this is a very good thing that all of the troops are coming home for the holidays. I personally believe that a war on this large of a scale could have been avoided. However I support the troops 100%, they are out there every day risking their lives for our freedoms. I think that this is very good for America, for one we will be ending our costly involvement in a war and all of the troops will go home to see there families. I also think that this is a good thing for the military because all of the soldiers will be returning home. This is excellent news to me and I can only imagine how wonderful it must be for the family of a soldier who is currently in Iraq.
I have not personally been really involved with the war so much, but I do know some people who have done small things for soldiers over seas. My little brother for example sent a letter to a soldier and made a care package for a soldier. I don't know any soldiers personally but I have seen a couple in airports in uniform and we have thanked them for their service for our country.

I think it is great that the soldiers get to go back home because they have not been home for almost ten years. I do not know if the United States will win or not, but the men definely deserve a break. They have worked so hard. Some of them have died for the United States. This war was not as big as the world wars, but it definely will not be talked about in twenty years because text books are not that recent. The United States has won a lot of wars.

I do not know people in the war recently, but my grandfather and my uncle were naval officers. I have helped give snacks to the military soldiers. I can sort of imagine what it is like, but I would not like it. I give everyone in the military a lot of credit. War is very dreadful, and I think that America needs a better way to deal with their problems.

I am ecstatic that the troops are coming home from Iraq! They deserve immense respect for fighting for us there. I believe they should be thanked and be admired by all of the citizens of the United States. I will be very dissapointed if they are treated like some of the Viatnemese veterans were disrespected. I’m sure that the families with loved ones in the military are rejoicing over their homecoming. If this war is talked about in the future it I think it will be regarded to similarly to the Korean war.

I am not closely related to anyone in the war in recent years but my great uncle was in the Vietnam War. I know through him how much you give away to be in the military. You give away a clear memory free of terrible tragedy and gore. Your sense of safety and security is also lost. The soldiers that have participated in the Iraq War have given up a lot to keep America safe and to a degree unchanged.

I'm happy that our troops finally get to come back home from Iraq. Though i feel that the troops should have come home much longer ago. I thought that they would withdraw all the troops once Osama Bin Laden was dead. So many times there has been a promise to withdraw our troops, i hope that this time ALL the troops will be withdrawn. I'm sure our troops miss home and their families and can't wait to be back in America. I think that everyone in America is happy to see our troops coming home, and i can't imagine how excited and happy the troops and their families are to finally see each other after such a long war.

I haven't had any relatives or friends that have participated in any of the wars in recent years, but nearly half my family fought in the Vietnam War. I know how hard it was to just give up everything including your family to serve your country. My family only saw him from time to time, like every 5 years or so. After they left for America, my grandpa was still back in Vietnam fighting and they didn't see him for almost another 4 years. When he got to America my family rejoiced and cried their hearts out with happiness. I hope this is how the soldier's families will act when they see them again. I think the troops deserve at least that much for their dedication and hard work.

I think that the war in Iraq is a pointless endeavor. It gained us nothing but the knowledge that Iraq does not have nuclear weapons. My thoughts are that all of the casualties were unneeded and without a worthy cause. The U.S. went to war against an almost unknown enemy, and asked that young people sacrifice for an unworthy cause. I understand that it was a confused time but I have always thought of the U.S. as the people with a cool head in times of conflict. I completely agree with President Obama pulling all troops out of Iraq. And I hope that the war in Afghanistan is not such a fruitless war.

I do not personally know anyone serving in Iraq/Afghanistan but I will celebrate with them. I know that some will celebrate and some will mourn family or friends that are returning as veterans or not returning at all. I think that all of them should be thanked that they were asked to potentially sacrifice their lives. I also think that it is right that they be home for this holiday season; when they can come home from this war once and for all.

I remember three years ago Obama talking about ending the war in Iraq. Now I think the country knows that he enacted upon his goals end is ending the war. I wanted the war to be over because it is too costly. This expensive war will no longer take American tax dollars, and we will not have to worry about our loved ones in Iraq. The war on terror has spanned almost a decade, and will still be fought. Though, by the end of the year in Iraq, all American servicemen will be gone.

My brother in law’s brother is in the Special Forces and has served three terms. They just recently had their first child, and he will not be able to see his baby as often growing up for he is serving our country. I believe war is necessary, to maintain power and prosper, but unnecessary war is an atrocity. The war in Iraq was turning into an atrocity, for we had no means to stay any longer.

I think it’s a great decision by Obama to bring back the troops. After 10 years of war, they can finally be happy and see their family members. Though this is a good thing, what started it was bad. First of all, they never should’ve been sent to Iraq. A question I was pursuing was what was the purpose of going to Iraq, and having war with them. To me, there was no real purpose. To think back on it, so many troops died, and so many families that heard about this was devastating. Obama ending this finally is a good deed of him, but so much was lost through the span of those 10 years.
I don’t have any family members that were in the war. I actually supported troops. I donated some money for the Americans that were lost because I felt that we did not have to put up with this. I do know that it was very devastating, but if you think about it, thousands more could’ve gotten killed.

I think Obama did the right thing in ending the war on Iraq. Even though this war shouldn’t have even started, I’m glad Obama as finally come to his senses and realized how senseless this war was to begin with. The war is one of the many reasons for why our government is in debt. We spent 1.3 trillion dollars on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the results do not pay off. Also more than 4,400 military personnel have been killed and over 32,000 have been wounded. That is why I am more than happy after hearing that Obama was ending the war in Iraq. I think that this war in general, in the future, will be regarded as a horrible thing and an extremely dumb decision, like the Vietnam War. We spent so much time and money and wasted so many precious lives. It really wasn’t worth it because we didn’t even win.

This decision will be good for the families for those who are serving. Although I do not personally know anyone who is serving in the military, I have seen many video clips online and on the television about families. When a member of the family joins the military and is overseas, tears the family apart because apart from worrying about their daily life, they also have to worry about their loved one overseas. I’m extremely happy for the families whose loved ones returned alive and I pray for those whose loved ones weren’t so lucky.

I think that the troops finally being completely removed from Iraq is one of the greater triumphs of the Obama administration, if not the greatest. He's been working toward it for so long, and it took him a long time, but he accomplished it. The troops who have been in Iraq for bad reasons in the first place finally don't have to be there anymore. This will have such a large impact on the people of America. Not just those affected directly by the troops - although there are a lot of those - but the morale of the country will be brought up because of this. I am absolutely certain that everyone, now and in the future, will believe that this is a step into a better future.

I don't know anybody personally who was deployed in Iraq, or involved in the war. No one in my family is really associated with the military, so I don't have any real personal links with the war. However, as someone who lives in America, I have definitely been affected, as have those around me, and I think everyone is pleased about the news.

  21. I think that our troops being able to come home to their families in time for the holidays is an excellent thing, because they have been away for so long and most likely really want to get back to their families and catch up with what they have missed. I think that this means America will finally not have to divert useful money that is keeping us in debt to war and we will be at peace. This story will be written as one of joy and glory because our soldiers are coming home with Iraq in order to a certain degree. This will be a story of victory but also one of unnecessary loss because this war was unnecessary.

One of my close friends has an uncle in the Iraq war who is coming home soon but has served in Iraq for three years and can’t wait to see his family in person again. He hasn’t been able to see his uncle for three years and his family has had to deal with the fact that one day there he could have died and days later they would have heard about it. He personally can’t wait to see his uncle again. I don’t actually have any members of my family in the army so I don’t have close personal experience with this.

  22. I think that the end of combat operations in Iraq is a good decision on President Obama's part, and that the war as a whole was a poor decision on the part of Congress and the previous Administration, but I would like to point out that wars do not start because of the President, as he can only ask Congress to declare war. The decision to invade Iraq was not because of one man who won a disputed victory, but because of the elected leaders of the entire United States. Therefore, people who voted the people who declared war into office should also receive some share of the ample supply of blame.

The prompt for the second paragraph is ridiculous; the closest relative that I know of who has served in the military was my great-uncle, who served in the second World War, and who I never knew. (He would've been more than 100 years old by now anyway.)

This is probably what most families that have some one over seas has been waiting for. I think that is good that Obama is making the war end and is bringing back all the troops. The day the troops get back will be the best day ever for all army veterans, all troops, and family members who have someone over seas. And now I can live some of my life know that there is no one over seas.
Now that I know that they are not over seas I am very happy. I still think that the troops have should never been sent there. Now I think that every one is going to live there life better than before. Like all the troops will be able to see there kids and spend more time with them. I have a friend who’s dad is over seas and is coming back very soon, and sometimes my friends gets depressed because he feels like he is going to loose his dad because of the violence and then sometimes he feels like he is growing to fats and will never have enough time to spend with his dad.

It's nice to see that the troops are finally returning. Delay after delay, we all wondered (me included) when he was finally going to bring the troops home. It seems like he's finally made true on that promise. I have a few concerns, though. The new Afghan and Iraqi militaries may not be equipped well enough to handle the insurgent problem. Second is the fear that this peace with the soldiers back with their families may not last. US forward operating bases on the Pakistani border have recently been taking rocket artillery fire from within Pakistani borders. The fact that the US "invaded" Pakistan to attack Bin Laden hasn't helped matters.

I do not know anyone who has supported the troops, and for that matter, I haven't either. I still do remember, however, when I was little, I watched 9/11 unfold on TV. At that time, I really wanted the US to attack the terrorists. If that counts, great. Most of this is because I'm from China. I have no family members in the military, and as such, do not know anyone in the US military.

Sending American troops into Iraq was not the brightest idea, and that act sent president bush into an uncomfortable position. But no one can really blame president bush that much, because it was just after the tragic event of 9-11, and people were more focused about their relatives, other people who died, et cetera. Obama made a smart decision to withdraw the troops from Iraq, which he also claimed he would do a couple years back. Well, people are very happy to hear our troops are coming home (hopefully all of them), particularly after many years of war.

I have no one from my family who participated in any wars in the U.S., however; my great-great grandfather I believe, was a traitor to the Spanish crown, after being promoted general of the Columbian navy force. But that doesn’t relate to Afghanistan or the U.S. Many people will exult/celebrate about this ‘bravura’/ splendid news, including my family. Happy Halloween!

I think that it is a great relief for us to finally bring home the people who have been defending this country and give them a better life. They sacrifice a lot for America, some sacrificed their all, and so they deserve to enjoy the American lifestyle they have so bravely protected. In the future, hopefully people will look back and be glad that we pulled out when we did. I know that some people argue that we weren’t done there and that we should stay, but I think that we did enough for them to be able to fend for themselves now. If we stayed in the war, so many more lives would be lost unnecessarily.
Both of my parents were in the Navy, and so we had many family friends participating in the war. My neighbor’s son is a soldier in Iraq, and they talk to him on Skype frequently. When my dad was in the Navy, he was a submarine captain of the U.S.S Topeka. His dad and my grandpa was a soldier in World War 2, but he never wanted to talk about his days as a soldier. So I do personally know soldiers and veterans that have defended our country, and we should all be very grateful for them, and I am VERY glad that the war will soon be over.

I think that most of the people throughout the country will be happy that the troops are returning because it is what angered many people in the first place. I think that because of the withdrawal of troops, Iraq is also going to like us better because we are not occupying their land. This will form a great relationship between two countries, and allied countries are always better than non-allied countries.I also think that it is good that President Obama kept his promise and took efforts to withdraw the troops because not many people like it when their president tricks them. This might help President Obama collect votes for his reelection attempts.

I do not have any family or friends that are in the army of any country, but sometimes I try to help the war efforts by donating between $1 or sometimes $5 dollars to war charities, like if they are selling cookies or something of the sort, then I sometimes buy the cookies so that I am helping the fundraiser.

I am more than content to hear that the troops are coming home. President Barack Obama should be respected and admired for his long and hard work finally resolving to an end of this futile war—one of the bad products of the Bush Administration. I am grateful for all the hard work of the American Troops and I’m sure they’ll be happy to be coming home to their family and friends. In the video, the President mentioned how he was in contact with the leader of Iraq and how they are in agreement. I am glad to hear our countries are collaborating on how to resolve a war that created an immense barrier between our nations.

I have not been directly affected by the military, but I do sympathize for people who have family and friends involved in the war or across seas. As people internationally assemble and unite with the joy that has been brought by the ending of this war, I do feel proud of our nation and that is a personal feeling that I usually don’t feel about our country.

I think that it is great that all of the troops are finally coming home from the war. Families will be united. In my opinion, this war should have never occurred. It is pointless and caused the U.S to be in millions and billions of dollars in dept causing many problems that we now have to go through today. The war did not solve problems but caused more. Not only that but many soldiers have died and innocent civilians as well. I do not think that war should ever be the answer. I do not believe that people should fight with guns and weapons over problems that can be resolved in other peaceful ways. I do not believe that it is worth the chance of loosing a loved one. God had created us all to be in peace and unity. We should not fight through war and kill.

I do not have any family members or close friends serving in the war. Although i do not believe in wars, I envy the men and women who are courageous and brave enough to stand up for and protect the U.S. A lot of them are wounded and some killed. We honor the lost souls and will remember their service and courage forever. Now that all the troops are coming back home, they will all be safe and reunited with their families again.

President Obama is doing a great thing by bringing back our troops from Iraq, and it’s great to hear that the troops will be home to once again reunite with their families and friends. They shouldn’t have been sent over to Iraq in the first place, because our government wasted so much money from this war and there was no true purpose of why we were fighting this war. But it’s great that Obama is stepping up and finally putting an end to this unnecessary problem.

I don’t know of any family members that served in any wars, but I think that hearing about how our troops are coming back home and being able to come back to the U.S. after a long time away from their country is heartwarming. They were so brave, and so hardworking and their work has finally paid off. They can spend more time with their family, and there’s nothing more better than that.

I don't think that the war should have happened, but at least an end is approaching now. I think it is going to take both the U.S. and Iraq a long time to recover from the war. However, the war was our fault and Iraq is now having to deal with damage that we inflicted. I think it is important that the U.S. keeps communicating with Iraq.

All of the families with family members or close friends in Iraq will be very happy when the troops come home. I think that this holiday season will be very emotional for many families, and very special. Personally, I have a friend whose father was in Iraq for a little over a year. Her father came back a while ago, and she was very relieved, but I'm sure she is happy for all of the other families who get to see each other again. I don't have any family members that served in this war, or any recent wars. I'm sure that if I did then I would be happy to see them again. I also think it might be a little weird because I'm sure they wouldn't be the same.

This holiday season will be extra special this year as many families are receiving loved ones back home. After thousands of people have given their lives, and millions have put forth their life to fight for our country, they are finally coming home. President Obama gave a promise in 2008 to end the war in Iraq, and with much work he is. These people are going to be given the utmost respect, and our country as a whole will be moving on. I am very excited for these citizens to be returning home after all of their hard work, determination and loyalty. Everyone who served and the families of these people as well should be proud. They all deserve to have every respect they will be given upon their return. This chapter in America’s history will be marked as a time of triumph, a time when our country came together to fight for each other. President Obama even said our troops would return with their heads held high. I believe our country will be stronger and ready for a new start.

I personally do not know anyone coming back home this winter, though I do know that everyone back here in America should have care and respect for anybody and everybody who served. This will be a big time in history, making the newspapers and articles. President Obama says they will return home, and our country can move forward and gain strength from more time to train. The past ten years have been rough, though as a country we have progressed to where we will be this holiday season.

I’m very glad that our troops are coming back finally. It’s been ten years, and it’s good that they’ll be able to return to their families. The war was very pointless, and many people died for it. Bush sent our troops into Iraq on the pretense that they had weapons of mass destruction, but when there was no proof Bush was proved wrong. I think it was smart for Obama to focus on stopping this war, and it’s one more step to stopping other wars.
My grandfather was in the army, but he didn’t actually take part in any war. If he had, and was gone right now, I would be very happy to know he was coming home. Many Americans will be having relatives return to them finally, and I’m glad Obama was able to do that for our nation.

I think it will be amazing to finally have all of our troops home. It’s been way to long. I think they should have been home years ago. Many families have been living without mothers and fathers for years. I know it will be wonderful when those families are able to unite. The day the last of the troops get hope will be a day or rejoice. Some soldiers have sons and daughters they have never met. I know this war will be remembered in history but I’m not too sure how. It’s not really clear who won.
I know my grandfather served in the army and I know my great grandfather served in World War Two and died in the battle of Iwo Jima. When my family goes to Virginia/Washington DC we always visit that memorial. My cousin’s cousin’s dad (no relation) served in Iraq for a very long time. I remember how terrible that was for her to go through. When he first went I was very young and I didn’t really understand what was happening. She always went to Army camps in the summers and he came back last Christmas and it was amazing to see how happy everyone became. I know there will be many more families like that during the upcoming holidays this year. I’m very excited.

I think it is great that our troops are finally returning home, and I think that they definitely deserve to be at home. I think it is ridiculous that it took us nine years to bring our troops home, but I'm glad it is finally happening. This is a big success for our troops, and many families with be reunited again. I think this will be a story of victory. But I also think it will be questioned because we will have a 'normal' relationship with Iraq, but this is a great step, and success for America and its troops.
I do not know anyone who is currently serving or anyone who has served for our country before. But I immensely respect those who have, and I think they are very courageous people.

I fully support the idea of our troops coming home. I think that the return of our troops is long overdue, especially considering that the reason we entered Iraq in the first place was to eradicate WMDs that were not even present there. There have been far too many people injured and killed due to this war—Americans and Iraqis alike—so I think that it is right for the Obama administration to begin pulling out troops as soon as possible. In theory, I can understand why the Bush administration did not choose to send America’s troops home sooner—it would have been politically unwise to insinuate that it was wrong to send them there at all. However, I still think that prolonging the war was a careless move considering the number of lives at risk, and that the sooner we can pull troops out of Iraq, the better.

I personally haven’t known anyone who serves in the military. However, I have seen enough news coverage of people with friends and family members who have served in the Iraq war to know that it has cost us thousands more hardworking and brave people than it has saved. I think that the Obama administration is doing the right thing in sending troops home, especially because the war has affected the soldiers as well as their loved ones.

I think that it is wonderful that after many years with troops fighting overseas, they can finally return home. This has been an awful war, one that should have been over a long time ago or maybe never even started. We went to war on a country just because of an organization that was there. Now our own country is at a weak point and it is our job to rebuild it from the inside. Having our troops back, our American hero’s is the first step to taking America out of the awful recession we are in. The last thing that America needs right now is war, and once this war is done we can focus on the more important problems. We can focus our time and money into fixing the economy, which will help families and all of America. Obama kept a promise that he has been preaching since even before he was in office. I think that this will be written as an American triumph, though maybe one that should have happened sooner. Though the future opinion of this war could depend on what happens to America and its people in the near future.

Nobody I know fought in this war but my grandpa did serve as a doctor in the war on Vietnam. It makes me feel happy that all these people who have spent their lives fighting can finally come home to regular lives. I am really glad that people can stop dying fighting. These people deserve to come home.

I think that it is great to hear that our troops are coming home. It is also great to hear that that they are coming home for the holidays. The troops have definitely earned a big break after what they have done in the Middle East, for the past decade. I believe that our troops should have gotten pulled out a little while ago. The families were probably very happy to hear this news, and also many others that are glad to see that our troops of the USA are coming home to enjoy the holidays. I believe that we are the winner of this war and that it is our victory. It was definitely a great victory for our American history. I hope for a great few months of rest for the troops of America.

I am not related to anybody in the wars in the past decade, but there are many families who do have relatives and I’m very happy for them that a part of their family will be coming home for the holidays. There were many people killed in this war throughout the past decade. I also wish those families a happy holidays and good memories to those who they have lost loved ones. God Bless America

I think that by President Obama bringing the troops home before the holidays are over really shows to Americans that we have a President that we can rely on and stand behind. The war in Iraq has been going on for some time now, and now that Obama has began to end it and bring home the troops shows tremendous progress in the American Society. The troops that served time in Iraq protected America with their lives, never letting their country down. The families of the troops will surely be happy to see their loved ones return home safely. Although the war has "ended" when someone of Osama Bin Laden's authority dies, there is always someone to take his place. I don't think that President Obama or any American's should let their guard down too soon or maybe even at all, making America highly vulnerable.
I've never been related to someone who went to Iraq to fight in the war but I'm pretty sure that the families that had a loved one go put a hard strain on their heart. Bringing the troops home for the holidays is something many have been waiting for...and now their dreams have came true.

I think that it is great that the troops are coming home for the holidays. It is nice that the troops working so hard all the time have a break from the combat. It is also nice that the troops can see their family. For America it is great because it means that the United States doesn’t have to spend as much money in the war as they had for the past couple years. It is also a little concern because they will not be in Iraq to defend the US.

Finally! One of the key things people were so interested in seeing accomplished during the Obama Administration was this; the end of conflict in Iraq. After over some ten-odd years, things are finally drawing to a close. As stated in the video, the number of original troops in Afghanistan and Iraq will be cut in half, and all of the soldiers from Iraq will be home.

Another part of the video which really stuck out to me is the part about the US soldiers in Afghanistan. President Obama said that after removing all troops from Iraq, the next priority will be Afghanistan. This makes me incredibly happy, because my cousin is in Kabul, and we have not heard from him in a while, so him being home within the next three months or so would be fantastic

I am thrilled to find out our troops are coming back from the war that seemed endless at first. With intentions to do good, Bush did the exact opposite. People have lost their lives, and families have been in great distress with the effects of war. These soldiers spend countless hours over seas to protect us, which shows tremendous courage and heart. With the return of these wonderful people, America will mend its injuries, and we will be at peace.
I actually have never legitimately met somebody who served in Iraq or Afghanistan, so I can not give any personal examples on somebody serving in the war. However, my family has served in wars in different countries. If my grandfather was serving when I was alive and I heard news of this magnitude; I would be absolutely thrilled.

Obama says that he wants all the troops out of Iraq in the next three months. After Iraq he wants to move onto Afghanistan.

I think that it’s very reassuring to know that the war will soon be over and all troops will return home. This war has lasted for almost a decade, and has continued on the same way. It’s for the greater good that this war ends and for families to finally see their loved ones. The Iraq War will definitely go down in history as most wars do and it will never be forgotten. In my opinion, the Iraq War will be questioned due to questionable motives and reason.

I currently do not know anyone personally who has served our country in the armed forces. I do know in general though, that all troops are willing to devote their lives to their country. I think that with the troops from Afghanistan and the war in Iraq coming home that many families will be united. There is another thing we must think about there is at least a million troops coming back. How are we going to find jobs for them we cant just keep paying them for doing nothing in army camps. I do think it is good that the men and woman will be reunited with their families. I think that this will be a major problem because the USA already is having problems with jobs so how are the troops going to find jobs when average Americans can not. This needs to happen because we are using a big amount of our resources in Iraq so hopefully with the extra money we can create other jobs for our soldiers.
One thing that may be making this statement bias is that I do not have any family currently in the war. I have also never had any of my family in Vietnam or Iraq. My family has not helped the war because we do not think that we should be trying to occupy Iraq at the moment. I mostly think that the war on Iraq solved nothing since there will just be another dictator who hates the USA and he will end up coming to power. The war in Iraq was mostly just a waste of resources.

I think this is a very good decision made by President Obama. After ten long years, the troops are finally coming back home. They deserve all our respect and admiration for protecting our country so valiantly. I believe that the war should have ended a long time ago, because there could have and never will be a clear winner. After 9/11 we might have needed a few troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, but after that it was pretty much pointless. We have invested so much money in the war, and it has not really done us much good. Not only money but also lives, so many soldiers have died overseas and also many innocent Iraqi civilians have gotten hurt.

I personally do not know anyone in the army. The only connection I have with them is that every Tuesday Ms. Bell (my math teacher) collects food for care packages, which she sends to soldiers in Afghanistan, so every Monday I try to make cookies.

Having our troops coming home from Iraq is a good decision on the president's part. He finally made good on his promise to remove the troops out, which was long overdue. I believe that while the war was not entirely pointless, as it did oust Saddam Hussein who should've been removed during the first Gulf War, the troops should've left soon after his death. I believe that what this means for America is the end of a waste of innocent lives and money, and the long overdue reunion of many soldiers with their families.

While I don't know anyone personally who serves actively in the armed forces, someone I do know who helps them is Mrs. Bell, my math teacher. She collects things for care packages that she sends over to them. From letters that we receive back, I know how miserable and lonely serving in places like Iraq and Afghanistan is, and it makes me a bit more happy to know that more soldiers are coming out from those conditions back to their homes and families.

I think that this is a huge step forward for America. It means that many people will come home from combat and will be honored for their duty in Iraq. This may be a turning point in the United States because we are starting to realize that we do not have to deploy troops whenever we do not agree with a decision made by another country. I think this is a moral victory in our country with cooler heads prevailing.

I have met somebody that served in Iraq; he was terribly affected by his service there. He was very twitchy and always seemed on edge. I think that people who have served overseas are scarred for life and I think that is very relevant to why our president made this decision.

I believe this war will be seen in the future as an unnecessary war, however this war did accomplish killing a few extremist leaders such as Osama Bin Laden. This war wasn't won by either side. No wars are ever won. One side may come out with more land, resources, or just a greater military reputation, but as long as human lives are lost, no war is ever won.

I am very happy that our troops are finally coming home. They suffered through a lot of hardships, and I believe they were rushed into Iraq on false pretenses, which makes it even better that they are coming home now. I think that this will mean a lot to American troops and their families because they will finally be seeing their loved ones again, after probably going for a long time with our seeing them. I think that although we did sort of win the war, it will not really be seen as a victory, because in a lot of cases people do not believe that there was a justifiable reason to start the war.
I do not know anyone who has served or is serving in Iraq. However, in my math class this year, my teacher send care packages to the troops in Afghanistan, and the conditions these troops are in are very similar to the conditions that the troops in Iraq had to face/are facing. We receive letters back from the soldiers, and their experiences do not sound fun. Some days they do not have enough food to go around, and they have to take water-bottle showers. I think it is great that the troops finally get to come home. after going through many hardships such as lack of food and water and suffocating heat, not to mention risking their lives, they can finally return home to their friends and loved ones. While some of the cause of this war was definitely post 9/11 paranoia, I believe in total, it was for a good cause. there is no telling what other terrorist attacks may have occured had we not intervened. however, I do not think I have a very good idea about this because I was not old enough to make any sense of it at the beginning of the war. Because there were no obvious gains to this war, it will likely be written in the history books as a failure and a bad choice. however, by attacking their home front, the army may have stopped some terrorist plots that would have otherwise occurred between 9/11 and now.

My Grandpa on my mother's side served in the army as a computer consultant when he was younger. However, he was never deployed because there were no wars going on in his time of service. My Grandpa on my Father's side was in the coast guard for two years when he was younger as well. My math teacher, Mrs. Bell, sends care packages to soldiers in Afghanistan weekly. I think that this is great because the soldiers there don't get much mail and sometimes they don't even have enough food or water so care packages make them really happy.

I think its great our troops are coming home. Iraq needs to learn to stand on its own now that it’s able. I see it as a story of victory. I think it's monumental that our troops are returning home. People have thought of Obama as a horrible president because he did not fulfill the promises he made. The american troops tried to find the warheads but couldn't find any. Later it was concluded that there were no nuclear warheads in Iraq. Through this pointless war the american forces still fought hard and gave their lives up for this pointless war. This is a huge step for the american troops.

Because of this unnecessary war, many loved ones have died, and many people now mourn the loss of their family members. I think Obama did a good job of ending this pointless war, and preventing more people from getting killed.
My cousin is deployed in Iraq as of now and will, due to President Obama's plan, return to America safe and sound. I personally am thinking of joining the military, mainly the Air Force, when I graduate from college. I have been deeply impacted by the threats and chaos that has been going on around the world. I just want to my country safe because it kept me safe. If that means risking my life then I will risk it.

I think that this is a good thing because the soldiers get to go home and see their family. Because they probably have not seen they in a while and they need to spend time with their family. Some of these men are fathers and/or husbands so they need to spend time with their children. Because you can only watch a child grows up once.

I don’t know any one that is currently in the service, but I know that it is a big deal. And I know that these people risk their lives for our country. Also it is a really big deal for them to come home and an even bigger deal when they can’t.

  69. I fully support president Obama's decision to withdraw the troops from Iraq. This war has caused many to loose their loved ones and for those who haven't will appreciate reuniting with their family. This decision proves that the hard work of our troops has finally paid off. I'm sure families across the nation will be grateful to see the return of the troops due to their tremendous efforts in Iraq.
None of my immediate family members were in Iraq, but I witnessed the troubles my friend's family faced due to her father's absence. Her mother and sisters faced issues that couldn't be resolved without their father's presence. The absence of her father also challenged the relationship between her parents. The separation brought doubts of his fidelity which is reasonable considering the amount of time they were separated. They needed their father and it was hard watching them suffer from his absence. This decision has given my friend and her family the chance to live with their father again and relieve her worry on whether he will return or not.

Having our troops come home with 10 years of fighting for our counties a great thing. They have worked there tails off to help the country in so many ways. Obama’s decision making is great because our troops need to come back and celebrate with their families. Even though people has lost some ones, it good because there were fighting for them and their country. I don’t have anybody that was in the war but my Dad was in the Military at once and he said “He will never go back”! The men have helped us in many ways and they should be happy that they can come home and celebrate with their families …
It’s good in an aspect but bad in another. There are many people that can come back and spend time with their families but to some it’s sad. Some people lost their loved ones and can’t go without day thinking about them. My dad was in the military long time ago but he got out quick. He said it was the hardest times ever in his life. It is a great decision again to bring back our troops to the families and have fun once again.

I feel that its about time our troops returned. We rushed in blindly after the 9/11 attacks and it was chaotic madness. we may have halted AlQueda but we should have proceeded in a much more orderly fashion. I believe that this chapter in U.S. history will be a story of victory. History is written by the victors. we wont mention that we blundered in hastily and carelessly. I also think that it will be remembered as a stupid hasty move in hindsight but we wont mention that. It also shows that we are too powerful, we could send troops there in a full scale invasion without declaring war which is appalling.

I dont know anyone who was in the military during this time period.

I think that this is a good thing because the soldiers get to go home and see their family. They probably haven't seen them in a long time. I am happy that Obama decided to end the war against Iraq. They have worked so hard. Some of them have died for the United States and have left their families behind. This war was not as big as the other world wars, but it definely will not be talked about in twenty years because text books are not that recent.
I personally do not know anyone in the army, but some of my parents friends have family members oversea.

I think that it is a good thing that the troops will be good for them and their families because the troops don’t get to see their families and I think the troops will be happy to see their families. It will be good for the troops to be able to relax at home for the holidays and they get to spend their holiday with their family.
This because the troops are in a war and for them to come home and relax and there able to hang out with family and friends is good and they can go to sleep in peace since they were sent to Iraq.
