Current Event #24: Facebook's New Initiative: Organ Donors

Current Event #24: Facebook's New Initiative: Organ Donors

Due: Friday, May 4, 2012

Billionaire Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg announced that the social networking site wants to "help solve the crisis" by allowing users to volunteer as potential organ donors in the United States. Currently, more than 114,000 people in the U.S. are currently awaiting organ donations, according to the government. Facebook is allowing users to ID themselves as potential organ donors. Zuckerberg thinks that a lot of people who might just be on the fence about whether or not they want to do this, could be convinced to do. He described widespread acceptance of organ donation as "a shift in society that will probably take a while to fully take hold" until more Facebook users start sharing their experiences. Zuckerberg goes on to say that he thinks that if people choose to share these stories with their friends, that can make a big difference over time.
What You Will Do:
***After reading the article and viewing the video link: http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/01/health/facebook-organ-donors/index.html?hpt=hp_c1 , you should answer the following questions below to share your thoughts and opinions regarding Facebook's new initiative to seek organ donors.  Please note that your responses should be in complete detailed paragraph form. Be sure to explain your points in well-thought out sentences to reflect each question in its entirety.

1. Do you agree with Mark Zuckerberg that this move in organ donations may "make a big difference over time"? Why or Why not? Expain.

2. Would you consider signing up as an organ donor to participate in this cause to save human lives? Expain.

3. What might be additional efforts that our society can take toward campaigning other initiatives or advancements devoted to saving lives? Expain and provide specific details of possible examples.

I think it will make a big difference over time. Facebook is widely known and many people have access to it. It is a huge social network, and if a sensitive subject such as organ donations shows up, many will react to it. Although it solely depends on the reaction of the users and the angle of advertisement for it to be effective, it may produce a huge difference. To make decisions, you have to be exposed to it. Facebook is one of many domains that is perfect for this occasion.

I will consider becoming an organ donor because it leads to many benefits and may save a life or more. Although I may not be eligible now, I can still think and decide for the future. For me, it is almost inevitable to not consider this decision because I am certain this will pop up when I receive my license.

To save more lives, you have to raise awareness. Our media can cooperate and advertise the importance of certain advancements. Charities can be open to accept donations towards life-saving causes. If charities with similar objectives work together, they can rake up more money. These suggestions are kind of obvious, but they can make a difference.

I do agree with Mark Zuckerburg that this can make a difference over time. With so many Facebook users online these days, something as little as changing your status to saying you’re an organ donor, can make the big difference that Zuckerburg wants to make. People use Facebook a lot not just for socializing, but also for important things. As Zuckerburg stated in the video, people from Japan used Facebook to locate each other after the tsunami. Facebook these days can be used for so many reasons, and I think what Zuckerburg wants to do can affect many people and change peoples’ views on organ donations.
For me, I would definitely consider signing up to become an organ donor. If it can save somebody else’s life, then why not? There are so many benefits to becoming an organ donor and it would be weird if you didn’t want to donate your organ.
Media gets the word out very well these days- whether it’s on the television, magazines, newspapers, or social networking websites. I know that a lot of people on Facebook start a group to raise awareness about a certain cause and you can share it with all of your friends and let them know about it. Many well known people on Youtube make videos about a certain cause that they are supporting, and that gets the word around to their viewers. Social networking is a big deal these days, and it’s not just to socialize anymore. For example, Kony 2012. Media is a big part of our daily lives now, whether it’s for entertainment or to get the word out about raising awareness.

I totally agree with Mark Zuckerberg. The need for organs far exceeds donations. As of yesterday, there were almost 114,000 Americans waiting for an organ. Most of them need a kidney, which can come from a living donor. Last year, 14,145 donors gave at least one organ, according to data from the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network. A single donor can save eight lives. Rachel Lewis, spokeswoman for Lifeline of Ohio, said her organization has been working to make the most of social media and was encouraged that the Facebook feature would prompt more Ohioans to donate. “My personal Facebook page has been lit up with people making the choice to share that they’re registered donors, which makes me very happy,” she said. Petersen-Webster said she’d like it if Facebook make organ-donor status more obvious. As of yesterday, a person who indicated they became a donor years ago would find that information buried at the bottom of his or her timeline. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg wrote in a blog entry that the tool was inspired by people using Facebook in creative ways to work through challenging issues, including natural disasters.

I have always wanted to be an organ donor, even without this new Facebook application. More than 114,000 people in the United States are awaiting organ donations, 79 people on an average day receive a transplant while 18 die, according to Organdonor.gov. The site says more than 100 million people in the U.S. are registered donors. If I die, I want to be able to help these people.

I totally agree with mr zuckerberg, it is great that he is using his great internet fame for a little bit of good. facebook has always kind of pissed me off... its kinda unnecissary. but the fact that this multibillionaire is using his fame and following to help people in need of organs in the US is great.

when i get my liscence, i am definately going to be an organ donor. if i stay healthy all my life, i would love for people who have had some trouble with THEIR organs enjoy the great health and longevity of MINE. however i would want to only allow people who had genetic problems or were in some sort of accident. i'm not going to donate my well-kept organs to some fat lazy bum who didnt even TRY to take care of his. is that discrimination though? would that be allowed? who knows, but if it isnt, i would make a heavy push FOR it to be legal. like, you can only get donated organs if it is evident you tried to save yours in the first place. overall, i think this campaign is a great idea, and should do a great amount of good.

I think Mark Zuckerberg just made Facebook something that is realistic. Facebook can now be used to save lives. I think he's right about the need for organ donors because there is over 100,000 people waiting to receive an organ. With the new Facebook status you can show that you want or am going to be donor and share why they want to with others. The media is a great way to share information with each other. Word travels fast on Facebook so I think this will actually bring in more organ donors.

I would consider being an organ donor when I get my license because I don't want to die knowing that I could have saved lives. If I stay healthy and my organs can be used when I get older I would donate them. There are many problems in the world today and the media can be used to resolve these problems. There is always hunger, the homeless, and many other problems that need attention. I think the more of the media should be used to help bring out word about these problems instead of just being entertaining.

I agree that if more people see their friends being organ donors, then they would want to sign up to be an organ donor. It may shift the borderline people to become an organ donor.

    2. Would you consider signing up as an organ donor to participate in this cause to save human lives? Expain.

Right now I'm on the borderline, but I mostlikely would become one. I am going to have to look more into than just reading an article to decide.

    3. What might be additional efforts that our society can take toward campaigning other initiatives or advancements devoted to saving lives? Expain and provide specific details of possible examples.

Our society could ask for assisted health care to living donors, because if they give a kidney and get sick they shouldn't have to pay for that because they made a good decision.

I think this new organ doner thing can make a bid difference . I know that it is very hard to find donors, so with this new facebook thing I could be easier. I think since facebook is such a big thing and there are millions of users on facebook it could really helpful. This is a very good idea and I believe that it will help thousands of people.

I will consider becoming and organ doner because there are many benefits and you could potenally save someones life. Even though I am not technacally allowed to do become one now it will be something I consider in the future.

I think that the media will be a big thing that spreads the word out about this great thing. Raising awerness for this is going to really benefits many people out there that are in need of a new organ.

  8. That billionaire jackass Mark Zuckerberg is right: it would be great if we had more sweet sweet organs.

Currently, more than 100,000 Americans are waiting for an organ of some type. Last year, only about 14,000 organ donors were killed, and since the organs that are most in demand are the rarer sort, not many people were helped. This made for a very large overflow. We could correct this in two ways: Signing more people up as organ donors, or making sure that organ donors are more reckless with their lives.

Of course, prevention is the best cure. Ensuring you never need a new organ is the best way make sure your organs work.

I agree with Mark Zuckerberg that the option to identify yourself as an organ donor over Facebook, could possibly draw in new donors. This could definitely help to stop the crisis of people who need organ transfusions. I do not see any harm in this, because if this effort is not successful, it is not going to hurt anyone. At least he is being a good person and trying to help some people in need. If it doesn't work, then nothing will really go wrong so I do not think it is worth making a big deal out of.

I think that I might consider becoming a donor later on in my life, not necessarily because of these efforts, but because if I feel it is a good thing to do. To me this effort will not have a big effect, but I still respect him for trying to reach out and help others.

I think the best way for our community to help save lives is to continue to research better medicines and techniques that can help people live longer. I think that because technology keeps advancing it is very good for our generation because there is a good chance that it will benefit our health a lot in the future.

  10. To me, signing up to be an organ donor over Facebook seems like a silly and non-realistic idea. Something so serious and life-altering should be handled in person rather than on a social networking site. Nowadays, there are plenty of scams and lies all around Facebook, and I wouldn’t trust an advertisement for organ donations. However, Facebook could educate people more about the cause and spread awareness and need for donors. I don’t doubt Facebook’s involvement could result in a positive outcome, but I don’t believe it will have as much of an affect as Mark Zuckerberg believes it will.

I would definitely consider becoming an organ donor if the opportunity came up. I would not necessarily sign up to become a donor over Facebook. To donate an organ of mine, I would probably have to meet the person and make sure my organ is going to a valuable cause. Signing up as an organ donor over Facebook has the word spam all over it. People should take caution when making such an important decision.

The first step in saving more lives is spreading awareness of the issue. The media has a potential to serve as an important part of spreading awareness if they reach the public in relatable and interesting ways. Using Facebook to educate people is a great idea. Giving the public easy ways to contribute is also vital. Charities must state clearly exactly what they are accepting and make it attainable to the public. Instead of just accepting money donations, Charities should allow people to come in and help out for service hours or just because they want too. Making it easy for the public to help encourages all of us to do a little something to contribute.

  11. I completely agree with Mark Zuckerberg's idea for advertising the need for organ donors. Right now, the world needs more organs than donations for the procedures. As of yesterday, there were nearly 114,000 Americans waiting in need of an organ. Most of them needed a kidney, which can come from a living donor. I agree with Mark Zuckerberg that we need more organ donors, many more than we currently have, and that Facebook could be a good medium for showing one’s willingness to support this necessary cause. In any case, the recent media attention Facebook has been getting for this new development is raising awareness for organ donation, and that in itself is positive. Giving people the choice to show that they are willing to donate may be the next step in making Facebook a more realistic, practical site (rather than simply a social network). However, I expect that the true changes will come not from Facebook itself, but from the knowledge spread about organ donation.

Given the choice, I would become an organ donor. I know that it is an important decision to make, and I can understand the hesitations people have about the topic. However, I hope that I would do it, if the opportunity were to come up during my lifetime. I also hope that when I die, I can do so knowing that I have done what I can to help others—and I think that donating an organ to someone in need is one of the most basic, yet significant ways to do that.

Mark Zuckerburg is a genius and an inspiration in my opinion. Not only did he make the most popular social networking site in the world in his early twenties, he has also made aspirations toward world peace in human interaction and saving lives. I completely support what he is doing, if there are 114,000 Americans waiting for organs then I wonder how many people in the world need them. Zuckerburg is completely right when he says it'll take time. People influence People. Once one person does it, it will create a domino affect and soon millions will sign up as well. This is a great way to save lives.

Thanks to my Driver's Ed course i have already decided that I will become an Organ donor once I become legible.

LIke everything in the world a good way to spread an issue is through the media. I feel like these issues are reaching towards the wrong media outlets to spread knowledge. The other day I was watching MTV and they had a segment where this rapper was at occupy wallstreet and MTV interviewed him and asked the reasons why he was there. After hearing his reasons i realized that things like breast cancer awareness and other issues like organ donations should be reaching out towards the younger audience instead of newscasts that older audiences watch.

This is a good idea. Mark Zuckerberg is quite the intelligent fellow. He's a billionaire now so he's pretty well-off. I think it's a very good idea considering how many people need organs. He is quite the genius. It definitely will make a huge difference over time considering the millions of people on Facebook and the few of who actually care about others. Of course this project will take time, I estimate like twenty-seven to two hundred eighty-seven years long. It will spread like a wild fire in a forest of dry trees and gasoline rain in Arizona in the summer during a five-hundred thirty-five year long drought with the humidity level of -2 percent, not to mention the highly-flammable bug-spray and paper factories nearby.

Of course I would be an organ donor. If I die, why waste perfectly healthy organs. It would be a waste of my beautiful animal cells and tissues and molecules and atoms and proteins and lipids and carbohydrates if I just died and then cremated them. Why not give it to someone who needs it.

Tell people about it. Help someone. Teach people about being nice and generous. Most importantly, realize that if you die, you're wasting a whole bunch of good meat. Other people could use your organs and if you're dead you obviously cannot. Therefore donating your organs after you die is totally alright. Imagine if you needed a new kidney and you would die in six months if you cannot find a new one. The doctors tell you they can't find a new one. You are now screwed.

I completely agree with Mark Zuckerberg's idea advertising the need for organ donors. There are people in this world that need organs and they are hard to get. especially when you have to wait on the waiting list to get a organ that you need. There are many people waiting for a organ and it's hard to get one. this could help by putting it on facebook because when people get on facebook they will see that people in need for a organ need help the most. there for they will think about being a donor.

I thought about being a organ donor but I'm not defiantly sure yet. I talked it over with my mom and she said that she wasn't one because she wanted to keep all her body parts, but she said I could if I wanted to. I want to help somebody out but at the same time I want my body parts. but I don't know, I will know though when the time comes.

there isn't much we can do to prevent people from dyeing, or having serious problems with their health. I just say everybody needs to be safe in whatever they do so they won't have problems.

I agree with Mark Zuckerberg and I'm glad he's using his fame and connections to promote something that is thought so little about. Organ donation is something that is generally ignored by the public because no one really thinks about what people should do with their body after they die, but because you don't think about it, you should probably donate it to someone who needs it. I think that because Facebook and other social media websites are booming right now as we have seen with "Kony2012," people trust anything they see on websites. I'm glad that instead of promoting a somewhat distrust worthy campaign, we are promoting something for the great good and using the internet as a good source.

I will definitely become an organ donor when I get my driver's licence. I think it is very important to give what you can, the least I can do is give my organs! I think as for initiatives to saving lives, we should continue to take Mark Zuckerberg's lead and use social media as a resource to promote good causes. It is important that people know what good can come from things like twitter and Facebook.

I agree with Zuckerberg on this one. Organ donations can help a great many people survive terminal illnesses. On the other hand, keep in mind that certain people’s bodies will reject the new organs, so the effect may be diminished slightly. And Henry was right about the overflow: the organs in larger demand and the rarer ones (Like a heart, good luck donating that). However, Facebook’s support for organ donations could convince a lot of people to think about donating, so yes, it could make a large difference.

On the other hand, I would not sign up to become an organ donor. I know it’s supposed to be kind and all, but the thought of my internal organs being removed and out into someone else’s body just doesn’t seem very appetizing. In the future, perhaps I will become I donor. I don’t know. In fact, I’m not even sure if I’m eligible at this point. Also, despite Emery’s cynicism, I feel like he has a point. There should be a way to only sign up for certain types of donations. I wouldn’t want to donate my organs to an irresponsible person who just didn’t take care of their body.

Simply putting up signs or notifications on social networks like Facebook should be enough. Otherwise, I’m not sure what else could be done, aside from just walking around yelling about it, posting on Facebook or Twitter, etc. Everything helps! Probably...

    1. Do you agree with Mark Zuckerberg that this move in organ donations may "make a big difference over time"? Why or Why not?
Yes it will raise awareness of organ donation, and in turn more people will be less afraid to get it on your license and stuff. The fact is almost all doctors do not profit from handing away your organs.(Maybe if they have a sick relative or are bribed). There is NO official benefit to the doctor by doing an organ transplant(other than feeling like they did the right thing.
    2. Would you consider signing up as an organ donor to participate in this cause to save human lives?
Yes, when I get my license. Why waste perfectly good organs? Hmmm... No real arguments against it? why do people worry? The only other point I accept against(even though it's a bunch of spiritual bull$#$!) is they think they cannot go to the afterlife, or their spirit may not be whole. but don't say their bodies will be mutilated, thes3e doctors do great clean cuts, small incisions.
    3. What might be additional efforts that our society can take toward campaigning other initiatives or advancements devoted to saving lives?
This facebook thing is a great start, we just need to do more awareness raising. and get the facts straight, there is no danger in being an organ donor. it's not like the second you sign up they harvest your organs.

I think that Mark Zuckerberg has a very good idea. It will make a big difference over time because more people will be aware that they can donate their organ when they pass away and save one or even multipal lives. There are so many illnesses today that causes people to loose very important organs in their bodies, and to be able to get an organ transplant, you have to be put onto the waiting list. For some unfortunate people, being on the waiting list is just not enough time. So if Marks idea works, then more people all over the world would be more informed and more aware. They can become an organ donor and save the lives of many people.

I would say yes to signing up to be an organ donor. It would make me more then happy to know that if my organs were still healthy and working(if i pass away), that it would maybe save lives of loved ones. If a member of my family were in need of an organ transplant, I would pray for anything to happen so they could get one. I'm sure that so many families are eager to be on top of the waiting list right at this moment.

I think this idea of donating organ on facebook is a huge start towards campaigning other initiatives devoted to saving lives. Simply informing the public will increase more awareness.

I agree that this organ donation on Facebook could really make a difference. So many people use Facebook that seeing their friends and family do it could inspire them to donate and save more lives themselves. It could become a trend of change that could bring down the 19 a day to 0. I think that if people use a little kindness, and there’s some positive peer pressure from seeing that their friends did it, then this could be big. This change of making it a social thing could be just the push people needed. There are plenty of people on Facebook who might be willing to do it and make a huge change in the way the program works.

I would consider being a donor when I’m old enough, since it is a good cause but not right now. I feel like I don’t really want to make the decision until I’m 18 and an adult, even if I do have my license. I want to wait until I’m old enough that I’m making my own decisions, since I can always easily make myself a donor. For now though, I’m not even old enough to be one. I think that we should start doing more advertising for good causes like that in popular places online. Everyone uses the internet so it’s a quick way to spread information. For example, if you wanted to get money for a fundraiser for poverty, the best way to gain support would be online. You could earn a lot more by spreading it around sites that everyone uses like Facebook.

Yes, I think that this will make a big difference because on Facebook there is a lot of stuff that people read and support and like. With so many Facebook users online these days, changing your status to saying you’re an organ donor, can make the big difference that Zuckerburg wants to make. Not everyone will say yes to becoming an organ donor but some will say yes and others will say no. Also everything basically depends on our choices that we make.

I would definitely consider being an organ donor, if it means saving others lives. Because what would be the point of not being one? When people die their organs are going to decay anyways so why wouldn’t you want to be one.

Since the media usually the best way to get the word out, either on television, online, magazine, posters and etc. There are also a lot of people on Facebook getting/raising awareness about different things. Also famous Youtube, and other people make statements or videos about supporting a fact or talking about a subject.

I believe that this could potentially have a big impact on the human society. There are some many people on Facebook and not that many people that need organ transplants, compared to the amount of people that use Facebook. There are some down sides to this. There are many people who use Facebook some people could not give an organ. Also, some people might put down that they are organ donors even though they don’t want to give up an organ.

I would sign up to be an organ donor so I could save somebody’s life. Being able to put this on my Facebook profile didn’t sway my decision. I don’t think being able to put this information on Facebook will make more people organ donors. I think it is just another way to show that you are an organ donor. I think if we just made being an organ donor more public than more people. We, as a society, need to tell people’s stories. Most people would give an organ for a family member, but not for a stranger. If we got people’s stories out in public people might be more generous for giving an organ.

I think that this was a very good idea, and I completely agree with it. I had no idea that so many people die because of lack of organ transplants they are waiting for. Facebook is very influential because it allows people to put ideas out were they can easily spread, so I am sure people can be easily convinced to donate their organs.
I would certainly agree to be an organ donor, because once you body is dead and if your organs are in good condition, you don;t need them anymore. However, since organ donations are a very serious medical matter, I would not sign up through facebook, but somewhere else.
I think that there should be more efforts made to help people who need organ donations, and I think the best way to that during these times is through social media sites like facebook, because people use them so much. However, I cannot really think of anything else we could do to raise awareness besides campaigns like these and organizations.

I think it will because people will realize how important organ donation is. Most people do not pay too much attention to it, and more people will become organ donors. But also, organ donors need to talk to their doctors about it, not just put it on Facebook. I want to be an organ donor because there is no use of your body being in a coffin after you are dead, with body parts that can be used. When you are dead, you do not move around in your body anymore. I think people need to think more about others. Since we are in a recession, most people take a lot of time into their money. I think putting time into your money is important, but anyone can die at any second, and everyone needs help without money investing. People do not realize how life is a gift, and people need to use it well. There should be more advertisements about how organ donating affects people and how their lives have changed. When people see those advertisements, they will completely change.

I agree with this idea. I did not know that a lot of people die just because they don't have a organ transplant. I like Facebook because people can let express their ideas easily. Because of this, people can donate their organs. I would want to be an organ donor because saving lives is very important, when your dead.

I believe that talking about organ donations through Facebook is a good way to spread the word about it. Since many people use Facebook today, it is a great way to share people's stories and promote organ donors that are on the fence. This idea could help thousands of more people needing organs. This is one way Facebook could make itself useful to society.

We should talk about organ donors in school and learn about how the process works and how you can become one. Many people are scared that if they are in a near death situation that doctors will pull organs out of them because it says on their license that they are organ donors. I believe the more people talk about it, the more people that will become organ donors.

Mark Zuckerberg made a great point in helping endorse organ donations. Now facebook (an extremely popular social network site) will have majorly supported hospitals in having people become organ donors. And the thousands of people on Earth waiting for an organ transplant could be reduced if this Facebook idea works, because there are already millions of people using the site, and if they take a good time to think, then they could make a good person out of themselves by becoming a donor.

I would do anything possible to give away my organs when I die; for testing donations, things like that. I can't really understand how so many people die in good shape and they don't care to think for others in need.

I think they should make this idea spread and be more encouraging for even children to think about, and require certain teachers to explain how the process is done to promote this idea.

I think what Zuckerberg is doing is great. It's good that he is using Facebook to promote organ donation. Facebook is used by 250 million people, by educating people through this website there many be a great increase in the number of donors. People can influence their friends or encourage them to become donors, by this process many lives can be saved. I haven't really thought about whether or not I will become an organ donor, but I most likely will. There is no point in wasting my organs, when they could save someone's life. Organ donation should be taught more in school. I was only talked to about it once for 10 minutes in health. If more children are educated about organ donation, then I think they would be more willing to become donors.

So many people use Facebook in the United States, that I do agree that overtime organ donations will increase due to this awareness on Facebook. People will see that their friends are becoming organ donors and look into the option themselves, maybe deciding to become one as well. I think there is a good chance I will become an organ donor when I grow up, I’ve learned about it in health and it seems like a good thing to do. It saves many lives. I think our society can raise awareness for other initiatives or advancements by getting other popular internet sites involved, like twitter. Or setting up events, such as races that raise awareness and money for organizations and initiatives that need some help.

I think that Mark Zuckerburg’s idea of having organ donations organized via facebook is a great idea. Facebook is used so often people will hear the news quickly. I think that if people begin to volunteer, then their friends may get involved, and that builds up fast. If there are so many people needing donations out there, then the increase in donations will indeed make a big difference over time. More people will be cured and be able to live the life that was put in risk. I think that if you’re healthy and live well, you should donate an organ to those who aren’t as lucky as you. I think that when I’m older I will donate an organ, because there are so many people that need it more than me.
Organ donations are one advancement with Facebook, but what if Mark Zuckerberg decided to add something to donating other important requirements? 37. I believe that this move in organ donations will make a difference over time. A lot of things can be publicized on Facebook, and they usually blow up to spark attention universally. Also, Facebook is opened almost everyday by many users, so it's a good way to educate and persuade people on this movement.

I don't know if I'd be willing to give an organ while I'm still living, because I can't guarantee that it won't interfere with my own bodily functions; it's something to think about in the future.

I agree that transplants are a very big ordeal, and should be encouraged, for people willing. I think what facebook is doing may very well help. But, for some reason it all seams a little fishy to me. This type of program would turn facebook into a donor database. This information could potentially be dangerous for people involved in the program.

I would consider signing up for a donor, but not for the facebook program. I dont trust Facebook enough to be responcible for my organs, and safebeing. In our modern society extreme acts are used to keep people alive. If you are willing to give up something in yourself, and save someones life, you should be encouraged to do so. I think that facebook is a very influential social media tool, and that having something like organ donation on facebook for everyone to see could make a big difference over time in how people view organ donation. People spend a lot of time on facebook and let it take over their lives a little bit.

    2. I have always wanted to be an organ donor, because I think it's just one of those things that you can do after your death to really help people. Honestly, I don't really see any reason why you wouldn't want to donate your organs and save lives after your death when you're not using them.

  44. I think that Mark's idea of organ donating is a good idea. i think that it wil get better over time because of the amount of people that use facebook, and their ability to persuade other people of doing the right thing. however I think that this idea could back fire and there could be some risks to this. for example some people that use facebook are not the right age to be using this social network. And they could easily be brainwashed to do this and not even talk to their parents or realize what they are doing.

Although i would sign up to be an organ donor i would not do it through facebook, because i think that it is just to of a risky thing to do. it is risky because other people can hack into your facebook and say things without you even knowing. It is just like identity theft.

Other ways to persuade people of becoming an organ donor is just through the media. Its so simple to just put a commercial on television to help people realize that they can save lives. Millions and millions of people watch tv, and if you have commercials about organ donating they couldnt miss it! ive watch a bunch of tv and i have maybe seen one or two commercials talking about organ donationg.

  45. I have very mixed feelings about the ethics of organ donation. If a transfer is successful, without any complications or difficulties from the operation, then obviously it is a triumph. However, this is not always the case. Many times the transfer organ doens't take, and can't fully operate in a different body. When I get my drivers license I will definitely become an organ donor in the event I become brain dead, however I don't know how much help I would serve.
Facebook is a huge social networking site with an incredible amount power and influence; its all about what kind of influence and what message somebody wants to send. I think that this has the potential to make a big difference over time. The fact that it is there and avaliable will have nothing to do with it. Many people are afraid to donate organs because they are afraid of any effects it might have or complications it could cause. Having organ donors share their stories and lives after that will help show people that they are the same as they were before donation. However, in the end it is the donor that makes the final call of whether or not they want to give up a part of their body.

I don’t really know whether I would or not. They don’t allow anyone under eighteen do donate anyway, but if I was over eighteen I’m still not sure I would. My reason for that is just that the human body is so unpredictable. We still do not fully understand the inner workings of each organ because it would be near impossible to catalog. The amount of technology, people and data storage needed would be too high for us right now. I know I said that facebook’s actions will help us to deal with this, but until it does I would still rather keep my organs where they are supposed to be.

Our society can take measures such as putting ads for a life-saving cause in magazines, television and online. If enough people read or saw the ad there are bound to be some people that look think: hey I want to help this cause. Maybe teaching kids about what is happening to other kids their age in Africa or making PSAs to support finding kony. There are so many ways to get information out there and what are we using them for right now? Gossip about celebrities. It is disapointing that most people will go online and read about celebrity gossip than about a life-saving endeavor.

I agree with Mark Zuckerberg. Organ donations do make a difference to people and their families, and I think it is a good idea for people to become organ donors. By making it an option on Facebook, more people will be reading about organ donations and making their decisions. It will also make it easier on their families, knowing their choices before a person dies.
I am planning on signing up. I think it is a very important decision to make, and I have made mine. Even when I’m dead, I want to be able to make a difference to someone else. A lot of people do need organs, and if I can’t use them I want to help save someone else’s life. A lot of my organs will go to different people, and I can help many people.
I think doing what Facebook is doing is a giant step in the right direction. The different ways people can help needs to become more public, so more people hear about it. I think if the media focused more on how to help save people than on things like alcohol then we could be better informed and make a big difference. Charities would be helpful as well. It could raise more money for the different causes and could help save a lot of lives.

I personally think that it will not help much. Deciding to be an organ donor is a very personal decision, and should not be so easily influenced by peer pressure, or social medias such as facebook. One thing that I don’t like about America right now is that everyone seems so easily influenced. And the influences aren’t always good. The messages you get from media are not to be honest and trustworthy and kind, they are to get what you want, be deceiving, and screw yourself up as much as possible.
Now, this view has nothing to do with organ donors. Being an organ donor is a great, noble thing to do, and that message should be promoted. But people should say yes to being an organ donor because they seriously want to help others and care about it, not because someone told them to. So while I agree with the general message, I do not agree with their approach. I would sign up to be an organ donor, by the way. I just hope that the facebook group focuses on how many lives donors have saved, not how many friends have joined the facebook group. I also hope Mark Zuckerberg is aware that it is easy to press the "like" or "join" button, but to trust people to follow through with such a flighty, easily-made promise would not be smart. No matter how many people support it on facebook, it probably will not make a notable difference at all in the number of people that sign up for real.

I think that this is a great move since so many people die waiting for organs to be donated, and this could possibly draw in new organ donors. I totally agree with Mark Zuckerburg since today FaceBook is one of the biggest influences on young people, and making them aware of how many people are in need of organs may lead to more becoming donors.

I don't really see a reason why I shouldn't become an organ donor when I become eligible, because its not like I'm going to need my organs after I die, and I would like to know that my organs are going to use and saving lives even after i die.

I believe that the main thing that can be done to save more lives is to raise awareness. Many people are in the dark about how bad things are in certain places, and more awareness will lead to more people knowing and more things being done. An example of this was Kony 2012, which attracted a lot of attention amongst young FaceBook users.

I honestly don't think that this will really make a large impact on people who need organ transplants. I feel that Zuckerberg is way too optimistic about the effect that this will have on patients. I think that the process of tracking down organ donors and getting them to donate will be too complicated. There is a large difference between showing support for the cause and actually physically contributing.

I would definitely sign up for something like this. I am definitely planning to be an organ donor in the future if need be.

I think that Mark Zuckerberg had a very good idea. It will make a big difference over time. More people will have the idea that they can donate their organs when they pass away. There are many illnesses today that causes people to loose their organs; and to get a transplant you need to be put on a waiting list. Many people who are put on the waiting list will have a less chance of servavial, because they might need the transplant sooner than thought. If Mark's idea works, then more people all over the world would be more informed about this, and they can become an organ donor, too.

I think that long-term this will probably help out a bit. People will probably see the new facebook thing as a way to show their support. I personally haven't put any real thought into becoming an organ donor. I'll make that decision when the time comes. I think that this kind of thing would also be great for other life saving campaign's. I think that Facebook should keep doing stuff like this.

  67. I think that is is a good idea to post that you are an organ donor up on facebook just to show that you are, posting that would also help create other possible organ donors because facebook is definitely one of the biggest influences on people today. There are no bad consequences to it so i really don't see the problem. I think that long term this would help us because so many people need organs if they get hurt so i think if we get the word out now then it would definitely help us later.

I was thinking about becoming an organ donor but i really don't have to be worrying about that any time soon.

I think that spreading the word for organ donors could really help our potential future in saving lives.

I agree with Mark Zuckerberg because people don’t really take into account how many people are dying everyday because they had to wait too long to get their organs. I think putting it on facebook will get people attention and more people will volunteer to donate. Over time I think the people in need of donations will decrease and the amount of people who donate will increase. I thought about signing upto be a donor but my parents said no and they made an interesting point. They said that if you sign up to be a donor the hospitals might not try as hard to save you, because they want your organs. As of right now no I would not sign up to be an organ donor. Other things society could do is get the word out about the people who need organs. If they made a video like they did about kony I bet a lot more people would get involved and try to help out.

I think that Mark Zuckerberg's idea is really special because many people don't notice the needs of others. Facebook is the most used social network in the world, and has over 500,000,000 users. This would be a beneficial marketing strategy, for people who need donations, or organizations that collect organs. I personally have faith in my doctors, and believe that they will take the same care for me whether I choose to become a donor or not. When the time comes, I will become a donor.

I agree with Mark Zuckerburg because a lot of people have died and did not have a chance to say if they wanted to be a donor. So I think that now with this feature people can easily decide whether or not they want to be a donor.
I myself is stuck in between being a donor or not because my dilemma is that I want my organs to other peoples life but if someone close to me needs them than I would be love to give it to them before they are taken somewhere in the world to be used in someone else.
