Us won’t bargain for release of man held in al Qaeda, officials say/CNN Wire Staff
    http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/07/world/asia/pakistan-captured-american/index.html?hpt=hp_t3

The article I chose is about a hostage taken in by al Qaeda pleading to President Obama to agree to the demands set forth by the group that triggered the 9/11 attack. The man, Warren Weinstein, has stated that his life was in Obama’s hands, and if the president did not agree to the demands, then he will die. The demands were thus: lifting of the between Egypt and Gaza; an end to bombing by the United States and its allies in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia and Gaza; the release of anyone arrested on charges of belonging to al Qaeda and the Taliban, including those involved in the 9/11 attacks. According to the officials, America “cannot and will not negotiate with al Qaeda.”

I have to agree with the officials. The demands are too much for the life of one American worker who has been captured several months prior to the article. It is also uncertain whether or not Warren was the man present in the video that complemented the article. While watching said video, I took noticed of Weinstein and his surroundings. A light blue curtain was the backdrop with Weinstein in front, along with a small table laden with platters of food and delicacies. The man himself was wearing a simple white shirt and pants and seems to be treated well, although his attire was loose fitting, which can cover up any noticeable emaciated features on his body. He seemed well enough and his pleas did not affect me as one who is desperate for help. The video goes on to state that the man had health issues, and I have to admit that he did seem frail in the video, but he was also elderly. Although I would personally try to help this man, with the demands so high, I’m afraid it will be rather foolish to give in to al Qaeda demands. With their contributions to the 9/11 attacks, the possibility of a ruse is quite high. Overall, I have to agree with the decision that has been made. Al Qaeda is asking for too much.

Report: Pills made from dead babies in China. 29 Chinese smugglers disguised as tourists where captured in South Korea for trying to smuggle 11,000 human-flesh capsuled pills. People take these pills because they believe the pills increase stamina and help cure cancer. The flesh of the pills are taken from fetuses and dead babies. There were over 30 cases of human-flesh pills being smuggled in the past year. A documentary team went into China and recorded a Chinese hospital that sold the flesh. Since human's carry certain diseases even after they die the pills are very dangerous and countries are clamping down on smuggling.

When I read this I gagged. First off, Im sure that eventually, with combined efforts, we will find a way to cure cancer. There is absolutely no reason to demean ourselves and carve the skin off of dead babies to benefit ourselves. There are already pills and drinks that rejuvenate stamina. It's disgusting that there is a hospital that sells this stuff. Its crazy to think that the one country that has such a looming threat on this country does stuff like this.

The article i chose for this weeks' current event is about Al-Quadeas plot to bomb using the "Underwear bomb." The device was seized and in now undergoing technical analysis. The underwear bomb is in custody of the United States. Reporters had had said that there was no target found and that there were no indication of the would-be bomber. President Obama was the first to be informed about this plot back in April. The white house spokesman said that the device did not pose a threat to the public. Officals are not clear on who built the device but similer features of the bomb sewn into the underwear of would be suicide bomber was a man named Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab who got arrested back in 2009 when his device failed to fully explode at an airport in Detroit. The latest device, officals stated, was not made of metal but of powerful industrieal explosives. But the department of homeland security would continue to incorporate threat analysis.

I think that even though there were no threats, it is a good thing the U.S were able to seize the explosive device. These days, there are many plans of attacks and bombings. Many people could get hurt and die. I'm very thankful for our strong and powerful national security that we have. After 9/11, the u.s had taken lots of time, money and effort to keep the country safe. Defence Secretary Leon Panetta told reporters "What this incident makes clear is that this country has to continue to remain vigilant against those that would seek to attack this country. And we will do everything necessary to keep America safe," I agree with Panetta 100 percent. Remaing strong and vigilant will show attackers we will not give up, and that we will keep everyone safe.

42% of nation to be obese by 2030, study predicts
    http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2012/05/07/42-of-nation-to-be-obese-by-2030-study-predicts/?hpt=hp_t3

Obesity rates have always been on the rise, especially in the United States, but a news report just released says that rates might reach a height of 42% by the year of 2030. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 35% of adults are obese in the United States today. The report suggests that nearly 30 million additional Americans will become obese in the next 18 years. Being obese means that a person has a BMI of over 40 and is around 100 pounds overweight. Obesity causes shorter life spans, and greater lifetime medical costs.

I’ve always heard everyone talk about obesity and how much of a problem it is, but it’s shocking that the rates of obesity could reach almost 50% of the population of the United States. I had no idea it could amount to that big of an issue. There are plenty of advertisements and movements about eating right and exercising frequently, so I’m a little stuck on how our nation fixes the problem. I think people that are trying to lose weight are motivated in the beginning but cave in after a couple weeks. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is really up to each individual, and they need to remember it’s a slow and gradual process.

U.S. and other intelligence agencies recently broke up a plot to bomb an airliner and have seized an explosive device that is similar to ones previously used by al Qaeda, officials said Monday. The plot was discovered before it threatened any Americans, and no airliners were at risk, one U.S. A nonmetallic explosive device like the one used in the failed attempt to bomb a Detroit-bound jet in 2009 was recovered, the official said, adding that it was meant for use by a suicide bomber. A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security said authorities have "no specific, credible information regarding an active terrorist plot against the U.S. at this time," although they continue to monitor efforts to carry out such attacks. The threat was foiled around the same time as the anniversary of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, although a second U.S. counter-terrorism official said the attempted attack was not timed to coincide with the death of the al Qaeda leader. The FBI said an improvised explosive device was seized abroad and that it is conducting technical and forensic analysis on it. The device is similar to others previously used by al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which Western officials describe as al Qaeda's most dangerous affiliate, the FBI said.

This article shows that even though 9/11 was 10 years ago, we still have to continue to remain vigilant against those that would seek to attack this country. Although I was not in New York at the time of the 9/11 attack, I know that it affected many people. Terrorist attacks are definitely not a pleasant experience, that much I do no. There for the FBI and CIA and other such counter-terrorism agencies need to keep a sharp eye out for those who want to harm America.

The article which I read talks about another attempted underwear bomber. This underwear bomber device was detected very early on. The Department of Homeland Security knew about this plot for a very long time and were able to stop it. American counter terrorism forces seized the devices in Yemen. There was a plot to bring down an American commercial airline.
I think that this is bad, and good at the same time. This event shows to me the effectiveness of our counter terrorism forces. It makes me feel safe to know that the Department of Homeland Security can easily catch, and foil these plots. Although it makes me feel safe , I also do not think that this is a good sign though. This could be a sign that there will be more attacks like this to come, and this is not a good thing. That is how I feel about this current event.

Smugglers in China are taking dead babies flesh and fetus's and making them into pills. They think that it increases stamina and cures cancer. Theyre were 11,000 capsuled pills attemtped to be smuggled in South Korea when they were caught as tourists. The flesh is still very dangerious though because the dead flesh still might have active disease on it.

I found this absolutely disgusting. I don't see how anyone could think it would make you smarter or cure cancer. I think it was horrible that Hospitals were helping smugglers by giving them the skin. I think it is repulsing.

Reports: South Korea clamps down on traffickers of 'human-flesh capsules' on CNN
This article was about South Korean government stopping the smuggling of pills made from dead fetuses and babies. It has been happening for a while. The pills are smuggled by Chinese pretending to be tourists. The human flesh is mixed with herbs to disguise the smell or put into prescription bottles. Hospitals are selling the dead to the manufacturers of the pills. The flesh is thought to improve stamina and solve cancer by some people. It is extremely dangerous though. There are very deadly bacteria in them. South Korea has said that they are putting a lot of effort in stopping this.
I find the completely disgusting. I cannot understand why people would do something like this. It is inhumane and the babies should not be used for such a horrible purpose. I am amazed that hospitals would actually sell dead fetuses and babies. It goes against the moral code. It is also extremely deadly for the people who consume the pills. Instead of making them better, it kills them quicker. I am glad the South Korea is taking this seriously, it needs to stop.

Title:NJ mom accused of taking daughter in tanning booth

This article was about a mother from New Jersey, who was accused of taking her five year old daughter to a tanning booth. According to the article, the daughter got burns from the tanning booth. The mother, who is a frequent user of tanning booths, claims that her daughter was only in the room watching, but was never in a booth. However New Jersey Police found a lot of evidence that points towards the mother being guilty. In New Jersey, the minimum age for tanning is fourteen. This case is still being investigated, though at the moment it seems that she will be charged guilty.

I was stunned that a mother would try to put her child through something like this. She should know better than to try to break the law. Especially because she was putting her daughter's safety at risk, which should never be a type of decision that a mother makes. Hopefully people will learn from this and avoid tanning booths when they are underage, and parents will hopefully realize that a large part of their child's health and safety is their responsibility, and they need to respect that properly. I hope that the daughter was not burned too badly.

My article was on the foiled suicide bombing attempt, or so it seemed. New information shows that it was a double agent who volunteered to go on this mission. He not only foiled this mission, but retrieved details on these new "smart" terrorist tactics, and provided information for drone strikes.
I was surprised I hadn't seen this earlier. I'm not sure if this is just a cover up for the fact that the terrorists are getting smarter. I must admit though, this was a very successful undercover mission. Why would they even release this information anyway though?

A video of an American hostage was released to the U.S. on Sunday, where the man, Warren Weinstein, speaks directly to President Obama over video about how his life is currently in danger unless the U.S. agrees to meet al Qaeda’s demands. The video was posted on Sunday on a few Islamist websites. When asked if the United States would agree to meet al Qaeda’s demands, spokesman Mark Toner stated that they will not negotiate with terrorists. The United States still are not sure if it is actually Weinstein in the video, and they can’t verify where the video was taken, though they have several ideas that he is held near the tribal areas of Pakistan. Some demands at al Qaeda wants is lifting the blockade on movement of trade between Egypt and Gaza; an end to bombing in Pakistan and also their allies; and the release of anybody put into jail or having charges for being apart of al Qaeda. They also demand that the U.S. release the terrorists that were involved in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade center, and also the release of Osama bin Laden’s relatives. Sources say that Warren Weinstein was captured in August of last year.

I think that al Qaeda is asking for too much in this situation. I think it’s horrible that they have an American man hostage, and I could never imagine how scared Weinstein must be to be surrounded by terrorists. But, as much as it would be great to get him out of this horrifying situation, I have to agree with the officials about deciding to not meet al Qaeda’s demands. They should never opt to negotiate with the terrorists that have hurt thousands of people in our country, both physically and mentally. Also, it was stated in the article that the FBI is not sure that the man in the video was actually Warren Weinstein. The video could have also been recorded a few months ago, but just now released. Right now, I don’t think it’s good to trust this video, because there are so many things that we cannot see behind what we actually see through our screen. I completely agree with the officials, that the U.S. should not even think about negotiating with these people. It would be way too risky.

Recently there was a law passed stating that gay marriage is not allowed. But that’s not all; people think that’s all the law was stating. The first amendment includes domestic violence, abortion, etc. Actual vote percentages in favor of traditional marriage are rising.
“Our position that marriage is between a man and a woman is gaining support, not losing support,” said Brian Brown. CNN states that the votes for not allowing same sex to marry won by a landslide.
But I don’t think gay marriage is a really big problem now because we already have a law saying the same sex can’t marry. So I feel like that’s already established. But I do have mixed feelings about it. Part of says that’s why god put two different sex on this earth so they can reproduce and be together, you can’t do that with the same sex. But then the other half says you should be able to love who you love and be with whomever you want to, although I still think its Grosse to be with the same sex.
I can say that the real issue is with the domestic violence and the abortion and the restraint of your immediate family being able to receive insurance form your death. I don’t see how that’s fair to the child if there not its immediate family. For the domestic violence its saying that if you are not married and you or your spouse commits a form of domestic violence then the police can’t do anything about it. I don’t agree with that part at all. I feel that violence is violence whenever or wherever it happens.

This article is talking about a person hacked twitter. This guy hacked thousands of twitter accounts, revealed their username and password. The only good news is that most of the accounts had only spam. It began on May 8th, which is a tuesday. A guy said that about 55,000 accounts were hacked, giving this news to public. As of right now, people from twitter is checking in on this, and investigating this scandal.
I think this is a big issue. There are so many hackers out there, hacking different things. This needs to stop, because bad things can happen when you get your account hacked. The internet and companies that have a lot of customers need to get their account protected. I have a ps3, and the playstation network was down for about 3 monthes because of hackers. Playstation restored it, but they needed to solve the problem and change the passwords. It may have taken a week to find out who it was, but they needed to tighten the security. A question i have is how do you get your password back, and get the accounts that were hacked back? Security needs to be more strict.

The article I chose is about Samsung’s new Galaxy S III and the company hopes/wishes that the new phone will help them take out their leading challenger, Apple and the IPhone 4S. The Galaxy S III has a 4.8 in screen and an eight megapixel camera. Samsung has also signed contracts with Nokia; which Samsung is now in charge of. The Samsung Galaxy S III also has the most recent up to date software/version of Google’s operating system. Additionally the Galaxy S III has face recognition and voice command; also the screen does not turn off because of eye recognition and as long as your or the user’s eye is still in contact then the screen will remain on.

I think that Samsung has made a huge leap with their new Galaxy S III. Because not a lot of phones or no phones present in a store has eye recognition and face recognition. Though many customers will love this new phone, the new gadgets, and the new hardware design. I still think that the IPhone is the best and Samsung still does not even know what the IPhone 5 looks like. In my opinion when the IPhone 5 comes out, Apple will definitely crush the Samsung Galaxy S III.

A double agent working for the CIA was recruited by Al-Qaeda to carry a newer version of the “underwear bomb”. The agent then gave the bomb to intelligence officers. It has been stated that this was done in cooperation with the Saudi intelligence, which has been more cooperative after Al-Qaeda began targeting locations in Saudi Arabia.

We seem to be getting a lot of good news recently. That’s good if we want to stop this endless series of wars. From what I can tell, Iran is starting to get… rebellious? Also, with North Korea clearly being idiots and threatening war, we need to stop wasting resources on things like attacking Middle Eastern countries (hurting millions of giraffes) and focus on the real threat. Al-Qaeda doesn’t have nukes (yet). North Korea does.

As you know our state just passed a constitutional amendment defining the only unions recognized in nc as marriage between a man and woman. This article talks about why it passed. Only 14 percent of registered voters voted in the primary. Only 8 counties voted against amendment these all being college counties.

I'm really dissapointed that this passed and especially that only 14 percent of the voters turned up. On the upside this move helped unify the democratic movement in nc. I think the fact that we got 39 percent of the vote while winning only 8 counties shows that the priorities were correct. Also the counties that voted against the amendment were consistently the more educated college town/city counties. The statistics concerning what people thought the amendment was about were pathetic and people really need to do their research. I've ranted enough about this issue to waters that he knows my extended views on this so ill cut it down

I am writing about a law, that will probably be the topic of everyone in our class. This being Amendment One, which was passed by North Carolinian voters yesterday. This law is very important, not only for gay couples, but for domestic partnerships. I personally am not as much against it as everyone else in the town, but i still believe it is intolerant to partners, who for some reason have not gotten married.

Honestly the fact of the matter is, the whole state is not Chapel Hill, where everybody has extremely progressive ideals. North Carolina is a historically conservative state, and all the complaining about this law, will not change that. People have to learn and accept where they live, which is North Carolina. A state that believes amendment one should be passed. If someone does not like that, they have the right to move, amendment one does not take that away.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I probably should've written this article about Amendment One, but then people will say I'm trying to destroy marriage by allowing people to marry. Honestly, I can't fathom how a homosexual marriage will diminish the value of a heterosexual marriage. People obsess over Bible passages that supposedly decry homosexuality; the Bible also forbids you from owning anything privately, from wearing linen and cotton at the same time, from eating pork, from getting tattoos, from assassinating Hitler (not verbatim, but implicit), from working on the Sabbath, from shaving the sides of your head, and from escaping from slavery, among other things. I don't see what business it is of the government, or of you, what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own home.

But anyway, I'll write about the recent foiling of an attempted suicide bombing of an airplane while in flight. A CIA double agent infiltrated an al Qaeda cell, which was planning to bomb a plane using an improved version of the notorious, laughably poorly-executed and genital-frying "underwear bomb" which failed so miserably. After fooling the would-be bombers, the double agent volunteered to commit a mass-murder, which would presumably be what God (or Allah, if you prefer) would want. However, in His infinite wisdom, He caused the plot to fail, and delivered unto insidious agents of the Great Satan itself the heroes' holy incendiary device. The ways of the Lord are mysterious indeed.

This is pretty swell news for the old Great Satan. Freedom now rings free, so that the basic rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness that have only applied to a select few can without fear spread across the globe, uniting its citizens in freedom, peace, and justice. Unless those citizens are gay.

This riveting article crafted from the finest words in the English language is about President Barack Husein Obama's interview about two to three to four hours ago (at this time on 9:42pm EST). This interview is particularly special because Obama stated quite clearly using his vernacular that he supports gay marriage. The Article is titled "Obama gay marriage support seen as world precedent" and it is true, Obama's gay marriage support is seen as world precedent. He is the first president to announce his support for gay marriage. This statement can change the ideas of people everywhere possibly but maybe not. It is a message of equal rights and equality and balance and civil rights.

The most important point about this article is that Obama has said that he supports gay marriage. That is really cool of him. That will be two terms please. The world will see this as a good standard to set for their countries but they might not see it as a standard for their countries. Either way, I am glad Obama has stated that he supports gay marriage, especially after the heartbreaking Amendment I deal in our unintelligent redneck state. In conclusion, Obama says he supports gay marriage. Which is good for everyone except gay-people haters. Therefore it is good for every good person in the world.

Libya: Ex-rebels attack prime minister's office in pay protest

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/08/world/africa/libya-violence/index.html?hpt=wo_c2

The article is about ex-rebels in Libya attacking the prime minister's office in Tripoli on May 8. It's said that they attacked the office because the government had said that they would pay a huge amount of money to e-fighters. The ex-rebels were believed to be part of the Tripoli Revolutionary Brigade. There were many clashes between the ex-rebels and the guards. There was also an attack a month ago because of the same money problem. The ex-rebels have said that the government owes them money but they've been delaying it. Libya was lifted of it's Gadhafi's regime last year but many of the ex-rebels still own weapons and the government is not able to disarm them or make them volunteer to join some type of security force. The major problems in Libya are to make a strong army and police force but due to these incidents the process is slow.

I think this is a little sad because Libya just pretty much beat the regime and went through a civil war but it's people are still mad. The government hasn't been keeping it's promise, yes, but these people are a little too impatient and maybe the country needs all the money it can get to make advancements in their economy so that those very people can live well. It's just sad to see what people would do. I think Libya should be more responsible of its people too. Many of the former rebels are still armed and the government can't calm the situation down when bullets are flying around them so i feel like the government needs to make a stand or something.

Even though that officals are saying it would not have posed a treat to the public, it is very good that officals have custody over it. Many people could have got very hurt and or killed by this bomb. After 9/11 many U.S. security has upgraded tremendously. I think what America did was very good.

This article talked a bout a new experimental way of protecting patients health parts of their body during chemotherapy, a process were chemicals are entered into the body intravenously, which is meant to kill cancer cells. Chemo Therapy particularly affects bone marrow and white blood cell production. With less white blood cells a person can get sick faster. This article talked about an experimental method of using modified stem cells to form a shield around the bones, protecting the marrow of the bone which produces blood and white blood cells.
This article means a lot to cancer patients all over the world. It will make more people to tolerate chemotherapy, in hopes of curing their cancer, and it will make them have less side effects. This article also made me think of the T.R.U. speaker that came to talk about her husband dying of cancer, and getting sick easily because of the chemotherapy he had. Some questions I have to ask are when will this method become full proof, and will it become full proof before a better method is found?

“US 'foils new underwear bomb plot' by al-Qaeda in Yemen”
    May 8th BBC News
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-17985709

I chose an article on al – Qaeda’s attempt to plan another attack on the United States, called the “underwear bomb”. Previously, they attempted to bomb the US in 2009 with the same type of bomb, but they were caught before any harm was done. This upgraded bomb was in no danger of hurting anyone at the time; there was no specific place it was going to go to attack anyone. However, it certainly would have been a threat if we hadn’t caught it in time. The bomb is currently being studied by the FBI and they are aware of the bomber’s whereabouts.

I think that the article glazed over what could have happened with the bomb, and what could be happening now. This article is proof that we need to keep an eye on the outside world, because they continue to attempt to hurt us. I’m glad that our security was able to find the bomb before it became a threat, and I’m thankful that they provide safety as well as they can. I hope that we can be able to detect more bombs/terrorist threats in the future without anyone getting hurt, and I hope our country looks more deeply into the other countries and their actions.

The article I choose is about President Obama announcement that he is going to support same sex marriage. This is definitely a big issue that has come up over the past week. Most of the States are voting for Amendment one to be passed which means different sex marriage. I know that in North Carolina only 6 counties won for against amendment one. Obama stated that he is going to take this Amendment into his election. Which I think is a great idea to get votes but also a down fall because there are a lot who want the Amendment to stay.
In My opinion I think that Obama made a good decision supporting same sex marriage. It might hurt him in the election or it might help him but either way I think it’s great for him to support it. Right now he said he doesn’t want to talk about it that much right now and focused on the economy. But it will definitely be brought up again in the next month or two. If governors or president candidates support same sex marriage then they should definitely include it in their campaign.

On monday the U.S. stopped terrorists with Al Qaeda from going through with their plan to detonate an improved version of the dubbed "underwear bomb." The plan was not far enough along to warrant any specific plans for the place or time of detonation but we do know that it was going to be used against the U.S.

I think it's definitely a good thing that the US was able to foil a terrorist plot however I must say that there is one flaw with the war on terror. It is of course a good thing that we combat terrorism around the world but the only problem is the cost. I'm not even talking about the economy or anything. The 9/11 attacks were one of the worst things in our nations history and resulted in over 2000 innocent deaths. That being said, the number of innocent deaths resulting from the war on terror as a whole, that is taking into account military and civilian casualties on both sides, is much higher than any terrorist attack; ranging somewhere in the hundreds of thousands. So the question really is, are our efforts, although valiant, worth the cost?

    amendment one passing
    http://www.wsoctv.com/news/news/local/amendment-one-raises-debate-about-businesses-choos/nN2Y9/

In our state we recently had an election. On this year’s ballet there was probably one of the most controversial topics we have had in the last decade. This topic was about amendment one. Amendment one makes it so the gay partners cannot sign up in a civil union. This is absurd. In North Carolina we already have a law that says people of the same sex cannot be married. This amendment is just rubbing it in. I have a feeling that people will fight very hard for this amendment to be repealed. I think it will get repealed eventually, but right now the citizens in the State of North Carolina that didn’t support this law are quite saddened by this news.
I personally did not pay attention to this topic very much until the day after it was passed. My best friend came up to me and told me that he was so happy that amendment one had passed. We had a long discussion about this and know I am aware of this topic and the more I think about the more I think this amendment is horrible. The gays are not hurting anybody so why do we have to deny them their rights. The gays have just is many rights as the rest of us. This is like discrimination of the African Americans, but this time we are discriminating against gays. Why? The short answer is, because they are different.

My article was about how the Red Cross was suspending its work in Pakistan, after one of their workers was killed. Khalil Rasjed Dale, a 60-year-old man was abducted four months ago and his body was found dead last month. The International Commitee of the Red Cross, said that over the last few years work has become very dangerous, not only in Pakistan but also other places around the world. They have been working there since 1947, providing health care, phisical rehabilitation and other aiding for victims of natural disasters and violence. I think it is sad that it has become so dangerous in Pakistan that the Red Cross had to leave. This will result in many people not being able to get the minimum resources that the Red Cross provided. Not only that but also it is sad that Pakistan has gone to the point where a peaceful organization, that helps people has had to leave.

“While Obama Trumpets Gay Marriage, Foes Seek New Topic” by Micheal D. Shear and Jennifer Steinhauer
    NYTimes.com May 10, 2012

Obama has announced that he is for gay marriage being legalized. He is also using this as a chance to say negative things about his opponent Mitt Romney. He is pointing out that Romney doesn’t want equality, he just wants rights for straight couples. The republicans are saying that this isn’t an important topic, even though it would affect the rights of lots of people. Some republicans actually are for gay marriage though with lots of politicians in both parties, this is a split issue. People are very strong on both sides so whatever the outcome of this, people will be upset.

I personally agree with Obama. I think that all people should have the same rights, no matter their sexual orientation. This issue shows how politicians are on an issue of basic human rights. I will be very curious to see how this is resolved, and I hope that it ends up being fair to everyone. There are many happy couples that deserve more rights. I’m glad to hear our president cares for all his people too.

The article I read about was about a plane that crashed into a volcano. The plane was a Russian plane on a series of demonstration flights. The plane was a Sukhoi Superjet 100 and the ruins have been located on the side of Mount Salak, near Jakarta, Indonesia. Efforts to reach the wreck site have been delayed as a result of unpredictable weather. It is thought that there are no survivors. The cause of the crash is still unknown, and it is not known exactly how many people were aboard the plane. Some believe the number or passengers was 48 and some say it was 45 because 3 people didn't board the flight.

I think that this is a tragedy. The site where the plane should be reached as soon as possible to recover bodies. I think that it is necessary there be a complete investigation of what happened, and the cause of the crash. There should be advancements in technology to reduce the risks of plane crashes like this one in the future.

He had been undercovre for several months while gathering information. The plan was for him to stay longer to find out more about the bomb maker Ibrahim al-Asiri and al-Qaeda plans in Yemen.

Twenty-six year old Bowe Bergdahl was captured in Afghanistan in June 2009. The Haqqani Network, a group that is part of the Taliban, captured him. His parents, Bob and Jani Bergdahl, are trying to get the United States government to free their son. Bob had an idea to switch Bowe with the five of the Taliban prisoners, which are in jail in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Obama has a plan to send the five Taliban prisoners to Qatar, and he will send Bowe back to the United States Military.

I think this is a good thing. I feel sorry for Bowe. I would not be able to stay in prison for three years. I’m glad Bowe’s parents are so concerned about him, and they are so concerned, that they brought to Obama. I’m glad the United States Government is helping out. They are helping Bowe a lot.

In Jakarta, Indonesia, the wreckage of a Russian jetliner was found. Efforts are being made to reach the wreck soon says Daryatmo, the ehad of the National Search and Rescue Agency. Evacuation was halted because of thick fog covering Mount Salak which is where the plane is located by. There were forty five people on the plane ad eight crew members. There has been no sign that anyone had survived and bodies will be removed on Friday.

This article was quite depressing. It was very sad to know that the passengers did not survive, and if they did, it must've been a very slim chance. It's very tragic, and the families of the crew must be hurting. I'm sure that Russian aircraft corporations are looking into this matter to ensure it doesn't happen again.

It apparently crashed into the side of a volcano. The cause of the crash in unclear. THe pane lost contact with air traffic controllers and later crashed.

The most likely cause of crash was poor and dangerous weather causing the plane to drift away uncontrollably. Over the past few months, I have heard many stories about pilots falling asleep and crashing and plane malfunctions and things of that sort. Although the chances are very low, it seems like more problems are arising in air transport. I hope they can find a way to make sure pilots keep on task and dont fall asleep along with air traffic control workers.

The article that I choose to write about is the same sex marriages. The other day Obama was on National TV because he was expressing what he thought about same sex marriages. He said on national TV that he supported the same sex marriages. Obama is becoming the first sitting president to support extending the rights and status of marriage to gay couple. In the interview, Mr. Obama spoke about how his views about same-sex marriage have changed over the years, in part because of prodding from friends who are gay. A quote by Obama, “I had hesitated on gay marriage in part because I thought that civil unions would be sufficient,” Mr. Obama said. “I was sensitive to the fact that for a lot of people, the word marriage was something that invokes very powerful traditions and religious beliefs”.
In my opinion I would say it doesn’t matter. I’m not against it it’s just that I wouldn’t want to a relationship with the same sex. It’s up the people who like the same sex what they want to do. In Obama’s opinion I really don’t see anything wrong with him expressing his opinion, I just thought that he should have kept it to himself because people might judge him now of how he see’s same sex people.

Some demands at al Qaeda wants is lifting the blockade on movement of trade between Egypt and Gaza; an end to bombing in Pakistan and also their allies; and the release of anybody put into jail or having charges for being apart of al Qaeda. The amendment was passed, meaning they are illegal. Hearts were broken, and many people became angered by this. Recently, President Barack Obama has declared he has changed his mind on his views of gay marriage. He says he now thinks it should be legal. Obama has been the first president to publicly announce this sort of approval. There are actually numerous states in the U.S. that do permit same-sex marriage, and we’re currently working to have it be that way in many more states or all in general. I know this is a big issue in NC and the U.S. right now, and it’s being compared to other places around the world as well. The first same-sex marriage took place in the Netherlands in 2001. The UK has been considering this decision since 2005, and it became legal in South Africa in 2006. I wonder how Obama’s approval will affect the country’s outlook on this decision.

How Amendment one distorts the Bible
    Huffington Post
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jennifer-g-bird/amendment-one-distorts-the-bible_b_1506351.html

I selected this article because over the pat three months I have been campaigning against Amendment One in this May 8th primary. While I personally believe that anybody should love who they love, I try to find it in myself to respect other people's personal beliefs. But when these personal beliefs are taking away rights from people within a constitution, which in itself is an oxymoron, I am not okay with it. Amendment one, like this article says, not only distorts the bible's language, but it also distorts the constitution and society. It is appalling to me the people find it okay to write and codify discrimination into a constitution which is cherished for its fairness and justness. By passing this amendment, which North Carolina did Tuesday night, we are potentially setting ourselves up for the de-legalization of me civil unions and domestic partnerships. It could take away health care and custody rights from children born into a domestic partnership or civil union, whether the parents be gay or not. This amendment also will take away domestic violence protections from women. All in all, this amendment is an against-people amendment and we must repeal it.

When this amendment was passed, I looked at my dad--who is a civil rights lawyer--and asked him how soon we could sue this amendment as well as revoke it from our constitution. As people of the government, I know that they are not doing their jobs as having the people's interest at heart if they are attempting to write discrimination into our constitution, conflicting with amendment 14, the equal protection clause. I also find it ironic that less than 70 years ago, an amendment like this was passed to ensure that African Americans and whites could not marry. These seem oddly parallel. I hope that this amendment is repealed soon and the people of North Carolina find it within themselves to make the morally right, sound decision and understand that there is a separation between church and state and we must not codify discrimination in our constitution.

This video talks about how Obama came across his decision for same-sex marriage. At first President Barrack Obama decided that there should not be same sex marriage but a couple days afterwards he changed his mind. Obama said that same sex marriage is just another evolution of mankind. I kind of find this funny because how could gays be an evolution like neanderthals? The other party the Republicans, have chosen to go against same-sex marriage. I believer this is stupid move since in the constitution it states that all people are equal. This is just what happened with slaves though not as bad. In the constitution it had stated that all people are equal but the white population had treated them like crap. This is exactly what is now happening with gays. Though not as bad people still discriminate against them.

This decision i believe will help Obama in the upcoming election. With all the young EDUCATED population of the USA he will gain many more votes than losing uneducated rednecks votes. Mitt Romney has gone against same-sex marriage which will not only not help him but he is rightly defying the constitution.

The drug, scramp, is very eas to make, requiring only a mix of wood glue, lemon juice, and hairspray. It Is very very dangerous. it can be licked, smoked, snorted, injected, or placed behind the eyelids in order to cause a huge range of problems. Kids are already having massive scramping parties that turn into massive drug orgies. However, things are being done. A new group has formed, called Mothers Against Scramp Abuse or MASA, and they are working to stop the scramp epidemic.

The feeling that you get when you lick, snort, inject, or place scramp behind your eyelids is unbelievable, including effects such as cellular respiration, taxis, stimulus, dormancy and more. I am a pro scramping advocate, and i think we should legalize scramp.

Asteroid Vesta is a proto-planet which formed before the time that Earth, Venus and Mars formed. It has an iron-rich core just like Earth, Venus, Mercury and Mars. Scientists have determined that it has a circular iron core that is around 220 km in diameter by the shape, size, and gravity field of the asteroid. Most other asteroids like Vesta were absorbed into Earth but somehow Vesta escaped obliteration and now we have a unique opportunity to study it. This asteroid can tie into about six percent of all asteroids that fall to earth. Right now Dawn is studying it from space and is predicted to stay there until June. Its ion engines are running much better than predicted, allowing it to stay there longer than it was supposed to.

This is a very valuable find because it could provide important insight into what happened and what forces were at work when the inner solar system was formed. This asteroid is the biggest asteroid ever visited by a spacecraft and it may contain clues as to how earth obtained some of the minerals that are naturally present. This article put everything in a very elementary explanation but gave enough information to accurately understand everything. I only have one concern about this asteroid. We may never get a chance to study it or anything like it any again. We should devote all possible resources to exploration and study of the asteroid.

This article is about how if you bought an iPod between Sept. 12, 2006, and March 31, 2009, then you may be taking part in a lawsuit against Apple. This originally began in January 2005, when a consumer sued Apple for unfairly blocking competitive sites like Harmony from uploading songs onto iPods. The lawsuit lost popularity but is recently getting steam again. The lawsuit has gotten class-action status from a court in California. You can chose to request exclusion from the lawsuit too, however.

I believe that this lawsuit is rather unneeded. While it would be nice to be able to upload from other places, I'm sure that most people already have ways of getting songs onto iTunes without buying them. If they lose, this would just end up being a big waste of time and money, and as it is now there is no settlement or reward determined.

Like many others, I did the passing of Amendment One in North Carolina. North Carolina voters passed a constitutional amendment that further banned any domestic relationship, and also took away benefits of those who are in or were in domestic relationships.

I think that this amendment is very unfair. What happened to the separation between church and state? The church was a major factor in the passing of this bill, and probably the main reason the amendment was passed in the first place. Then, many children's benefits will now be taken away, and domestic violence help may also be taken away. This amendment will affect many people around the state, and nothing positive will come out of it. I don't think that the government should try to govern how people love each other, and I think religion should stay out of the laws of our state. I also think that it's ridiculous that first cousins are allowed to marry, but homosexuals aren't. Anyone should be able to love whoever they want, and people also shouldn't lose their benefits because of an irrational amendment like this one.

This article was about NC State’s mascot being poisoned. Some people care about sports waaayyy too much. NC State’s mascot is the wolfpack, and they use a special breed of dog called a Tamaskan, because they are tame but look like wolves. Their mascot’s name was Tuffy. Tuffy’s mom had previously died from choking on a sock. Tuffy’s dad and some siblings were poisoned from fish buried in the yard, exactly one year and one week from the last poisoning attempt. Two of Tuffy’s siblings died from the poison.
I think that some people take sports and things like that way too seriously. They think of sports as a competition instead of a simple game that people play and watch for fun. The idea that someone would want to try and poison a helpless animal that represented a school just for laughs or revenge is preposterous. One concern that I have is that the article mentioned that the police have a pretty good idea of the convict, but it seems like not much is being done to stop them. He or she must be a pretty awful person to do such a thing over a game, and to try twice, it’s not just a in-the-moment thing.

Also, there was alot of stuff about domestic violence protection, and common law marriages, and benefits for unmarried couple with children, all that good stuff.

I personly think that it is no good that this passed. why cant two people love eachother, right? and when you love someone so much you marry them... right? also, its not just the gay marriage thing, the domestic violence protection and unmarried couples stuff is bad too. if a mother has been beaten so bad she is no longer fit to take care of children the kids have to go with the abusive father... makes no sense. and unmarried couples now cannot bennefit form eachothers healthcare, even fit they have children. and common law marriages, why dont they count?!?!?! if they count to LITERALLY everyone else, why shouldnt they to the government. basically this ammendment was BS.

Although most people talked about Amendment One, and I may be expected to write about it, I chose an article not as many people would hear about. Almost anyone in America will think that they are currently maximally updated with the most recent information and gadgets on technology. However, there are some strange things not many people would even come to think about. A group or company called “Narrative Science” is currently trying to solve a problem; data volume. Almost every electronics company (especially the popular ones) are drowning in data, that is, are overflowed with data, and need a way to use, monetize, and comprehend the data they already have. So now, Narrative Science assists companies in leveraging their data by using narrative reporting through their AI technology platform.

Now, their computers can receive data from a Football game, and give a good, understandable summary similar to what an experienced journalist would write. Not only can their computers tell stories, but also participate in group works, such as giving best optional choices and suggestions at a meeting. Their AI can also understand humans, and cooperate to some degree.

I wrote this article because I wanted to discover the things other companies are doing to help humans progress through technology. And if you think about it, companies like this one are not doing as well as Google or Microsoft or Apple, but they still have amazing ideas. So I want whoever is reading this to know that it's not about the popularity in companies, but the ideas that will make us more technologically advanced.

This article is about a 44 year old mother, who was was accused of taking her kindergarten daughter to a tanning salon. the little girl got a sun-burn like rash, and her teacher asked it how it happened and the little girl said it was from being in a tanning bed. i think its very dangerous for a mother to take her kid to a tanning salon. since she is so young, the UV rays could very well corrupt her DNA. the mother is also in risk of getting skin cancer because the rays are so strong they could make cancer cells. the mother is now suffering the consequences of bringing a risk to her daughter life.

On Tuesday May 8th North Carolina citizens voted to pass amendment 1 for NC's constitution. This amendment said that same-sex couples cannot share insurance. An overwhelming majority voted for this amendment. Most areas with major universities voted it down, but this was not enough to counteract the rest of of the state's views.

I do not agree with this decision. Although I do believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, same sex couples should get the same rights as straight people. I don't think that most people realize was that this is not just about being gay or straight. This means that unmarried couples, straight or gay, cannot share the same insurance and coverage.

The United States, along with other intelligence agencies, recently broke up a plot to bomb an airliner and have seized an explosive device that is similar to ones previously used by al Qaeda. The plot was discovered before it threatened any Americans, and no airliners were at risk. A nonmetallic explosive device like the one used in the failed attempt to bomb a Detroit-bound jet in 2009 was recovered, and was meant to be used by a suicide bomber.

This article shows that even though 9/11 was over 10 years ago, we still have to continue to remain diligent and keep seeking and working against those that would seek to attack this country. I know that the 9/11 attack affected many, many people, not only in New York, but all over America. Terrorist attacks are obviously not a pleasant experience to anybody around it.Therefore the FBI and CIA and other such counter-terrorism agencies need to keep a sharp eye out for those who want to harm America. It is a very hard task as it is nearly impossible to stop attacks that have already started, but we must somehow find a way to prevent these dangerous, very severe attacks from happening.

I chose to speak about Amendment One this week. Bottom line, I don't think that anyone has the right to decide who can love who. At the end of the day if your were to put a bisexual, lesbian, or gay in a group of straight individuals you wouldn't be able to tell them apart. I don't feel like placing a label on love is appropriate because that's basically telling America that this country IS NOT a free country. This Amendment doesn't only degrade gays, lesbians, and bisexuals but it also effects couples who are not married on domestic violence rights, insurance, etc. I feel like North Carolina has gone too far with this Amendment and it should be over looked again. In my opinion most of the people who voted for it, were ignorant because the majority of them only looked at the gay marriage aspect. Nothing can be done unless we educate others on the issue. Hopefully changes will be made in the near future because this isn't right under any circumstances.

In the past twenty years, a piano player who survived the holocaust by playing for nazis has starting telling the story of what she had to go through as a Jewish girl living through the holocaust. When she was only five years old, she started playing piano and loved it. However, WWII soon started, and soon the nazis rounded up her family and started them on a death march. Her father managed to bribe a guard to let her go, and her sister soon followed. They went to an orphanage, and were then given fake identities, claiming they were not Jewish. During the time she had her fake identity, she was forced to play music for the same people that had killed her parents and tried to kill her and her sister. When WWII ended, she came to America. However, her children did not find out about her childhood until they were adults, and one of her sons was interviewing her.
I think this is an amazing story. Despite the fact that all the odds were against this woman and her sister, they survived through one of the worst parts in this earth's history. Stories like hers make us grateful for what we have. The holocaust was a terrible time, and I hope that human kind has learned from it;s mistakes and we will never do anything this horrible again. Although I am not glad this has happened, I am sure we will learn from our experiences.

It was Monday that the U.S had stopped the Al Qaeda from giving an improved underwear bomb. There is no giving information that when, where, or who the gear was going to be giving to. All we knew was that this gear was going to be used againist us.

I think it was a good thing that the U.S had managed to stop the terrorist idea. The U.S knew what they were doing, and managed to prevent, what would have seemed, another "9/11". This suit would have caused some major issues in the U.S. It could have killed yet another 100,000 people, and it would have made the citizens terrifed and feel unsafe. The U.S would look bad, too. That is because it would have been caught off guard making other countries get new ideas than attack us, too. Because the U.S managed to spoil the plans of Al Qaeda the other countries (Al Qaeda included) will hopefully think twice before attacking us.

My article is about Obama’s campaign and gay marriage. Obama says that people should be able to succeed in life no matter who they love. I completely agree with this. Love is a matter of the heart and has nothing to do with people who are not part of the relationship. A gay couple getting married does not affect anyone’s life so why should people be stopped from getting married because they are of the same sex. I believe this topic is relevant because North Carolina just passed amendment one which pretty much says gays are not allowed to get married. I understand if gays getting married personally affected millions of people but it doesn’t. People should be allowed to get married no matter who they are getting married to. Love is love and it has nothing to do with the government so why are they worried about gays getting married? I think people are just scared that the world is changing and things are going to be far from the same in a little while.

I'd like to take this opportunity to enlighten all on amendment one and give my personal opinion. My article talks about Obama taking a stand for gay marriage and being the first president to publicly do so. It also says although amendment one passed, the fight against it brought people together. It also informs us on how amendment one wasn't really focused on gay marriage which was already illegal in our state before this. It formally takes away the former rights of all those in domestic partnerships, no matter their orientation. It ends people’s ability to get health insurance under domestic partnership plans. The bill even threatens the rights of unmarried parents to visit their children. The bill was written and heavily promoted by Alliance Defense Fund, a right-wing legal advocacy group, and bans all legal protections for unmarried people.
I strongly disagree with the passing of this amendment. Thorough statistics show 60% of people in NC thought the amendment only affected gay rights or thought the amendment legalized gay marriage. I believe this ignorance is a big part of the main reason it passed. I suspect the Alliance Defense Fund advocacy group called it the same sex marriage amendment because they knew half of NC would ignorantly come running to vote for whatever it was if it was taking away gay rights, because of their religious beliefs about homosexuality.
The first amendment in our country's constitution gives freedom of religion. Why are we stuck in the Roman era? This is not a Christian world. Who cares what the bible says? If you're even going to go there, it says to love everyone no matter what, like god and Jesus do. Jesus said love thy neighbor. He didn't say love thy neighbor unless they're gay.
Homosexuality is found in 450 different species but homophobia is found in only one. Which one seems unnatural now? Love is love. Marriage is meant for two people in love. Why shouldn't two people get married if they're in love, regardless of their sexual orientation, where they're from, or anything else? People once spoke against interracial marriage, and what do we say about that now? It's history repeating itself.
Like I said, gay marriage was previously banned in NC before this amendment even existed. This takes away the rights of all those in domestic partnerships or planning on them. If your boyfriend or girlfriend hurts you or rapes you, NC is formally stating in its constitution the government is going to do absolutely nothing. Thats what people voted for, and not the sanctity of marriage. They did vote for gay rights to be formally removed in our states constitution which were already banned. However, they also voted for taking away the rights of all unmarried couples. My final question is, what unconstitutional discrimination shall we formally add to history next? We could ban the marriage of all those who like the color purple. How about that? Maybe god doesn't like purple.

Canada child-killer Michael Rafferty jailed for life

    BBCNEWS/May 15th 2012

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-18076184

In April 2009, a girl went missing around the area near her school in Canada and just last week, a thirty one year old man named Michael Rafferty was convicted of murdering the eight year old girl, Victoria Stafford. His crime horrified Canada and he has been branded a "Monster." Michael is sentenced to life in prison with no parole for twenty five years. The victims family made emotional statements in court that made Rafferty swept. Victorias brother. Daryn stated his heart had been "ripped out" by her loss. He also stated, "This is my reality. No more fun times, just old memories. No more I love yous, just an empty spot in my heart." Police found evidence of a video that shows him raping Victoria.

I thought that this article was very sad. After reading all the statements that the family had made in court, I was almost in tears myself. Victoria was so young and still have not experianced the world. A man like Michael makes me extremely angry because what he did was inhumane and no child should have to go through the hell that Victoria did. I am glad that he will never get out of prison and finally justice has been served for Victoria.

This is about a little girl whose mother took her to a tanning salon. this was discovered when she was found with burn marks and sun bleached areas on her body. the mother who is 37 (looks 54) claims this is a lie and nothing happened. authorities are unsure, however this could mean the child will be taken away from the mother.

I was appauled by the mothers actions. she has nor right to raise a child as it appears she baltantly endangers the childs very livelihood. I think she should be arrested immediately and charged with child abuse. I was shocked to learn that she has no charges. I was surprised at the mothers age. when will the awful tyranny end?
